Ziggy the Iguana comes to stay with The Zula Patrol, and his abundance of energy and desire to “help” makes him a handful. He wears out his welcome further by turning up the thermostat to keep his ectothermic system from cooling off. But when Ziggy loses the eggs he’s babysitting, the Zula Patrol mounts a rescue expedition to the desert, where they learn that being ectothermic can be cool after all.

00:48Spin and shop till you find yourself on Zoolah. See your round walls at Mission Control. It's fun to learn
00:55with the Zoolah Patrol.
01:06Ah, today's just the kind of day that makes me think how much I'd like a vacation. But then, who
01:13would announce all the important stuff that needs announcing, such as...
01:16Uh, well, you watch the show and I'll think about it.
01:24Ah, you know, it's great to just enjoy a day in the garden. Nothing but peace and quiet.
01:34Wow, neat, cool. It really is you, the Zoolah Patrol. You must be Boolah and Zeta and Goolah. Cool, neat,
01:41wow.
01:42Uh, do we know you?
01:44No, but I know you. I'm Ziggy and I'm your hugest fan ever.
01:49Wizzy and Wig, my bestest, best pals in the whole wide world, told me everything.
01:54How you save the universe practically every 11 minutes. I can't, can't, can't wait to hang out with you guys.
02:01It's going to be the best week ever.
02:03Hang out? For a week?
02:06Okay, okay. If you insist, I'll stay longer. You are so great.
02:12Ziggy who?
02:13Do you mean that lizard friend of Larby's?
02:16We only met him yesterday. He did say something about coming by.
02:21Great! So now what?
02:23Well, he did seem nice and he was so enthusiastic.
02:28And after all, he is just one little lizard, so why not?
02:33It was awesome of you to clear out a room for us.
02:36Um, us?
02:37Oh, didn't I tell you? I'm babysitting my sister's kids.
02:41Meet Drew and Sue. Or is it Sue and Drew?
02:46They kind of look alike at this age.
02:47Anyway, they're no trouble, so I'm free to help out.
02:50Missions, chores, saving the universe, whatever.
02:54Well, I was about to wash the windows.
02:56On it!
03:01Whoa!
03:02Whoa!
03:08Huh?
03:14Whoa!
03:19Whoa!
03:24Whoa!
03:25Whoa!
03:25Whoa!
03:26Whoa!
03:27Whoa!
03:27Whoa!
03:27What happened?
03:28It's a long story.
03:30Where's Ziggy?
03:31He's helping Molto with his experiments.
03:33Uh-oh!
03:35Um, can somebody get me down?
03:39I'm not sure how much more of Ziggy's help I can take.
03:43Look what happened when he washed my space suit.
03:46Sorry I'm late to dinner.
03:47Just don't have much energy right now.
03:50You should take it easy, Ziggy.
03:52You don't have to help.
03:53You can...
04:01Oh!
04:23Ziggy!
04:23Are you okay?
04:23If it's cold outside, they get colder inside.
04:27And if it's warm outside, they get warmer inside.
04:31We call them ectotherms.
04:32This scan shows that the lizard's body temperature is warm when his surroundings are warm.
04:39But when it turns cold outside, his body temperature gets colder too.
04:43And he doesn't look like he's gonna win any races either.
04:47Right.
04:47That's because ectotherms are active when their surroundings are warm.
04:51And they slow down when their surroundings are cold.
04:55Oh yeah!
04:56Ziggy started to slow down when it got colder at night.
05:00It was colder outside because it was night, so there wasn't any heat from the sun.
05:04Ziggy didn't have enough energy to keep going.
05:07But why don't we fall asleep in our salads when it gets cold out?
05:11Because we're not ectotherms. We're endotherms.
05:15We endotherms are able to keep our body temperatures about the same, no matter what the outside temperature is.
05:22Whether it's cold outside or hot outside, we're ready for action.
05:26Then why would anybody want to be an ectotherm?
05:30Yeah, I'd hate to stop playing whenever it was cold outside.
05:34Well, for one thing, we endotherms need a lot of food energy to keep warm.
05:40Ectotherms use their environment more than food to control their temperature.
05:45So they don't need to eat as often.
05:48That comes in handy if you live somewhere without a lot of food, like the desert.
05:52Or our kitchen, after Wig's been through it.
05:59Wow, we should ask Ziggy what it's like being an ectotherm.
06:03But we'd better wait until morning, when it's warmer.
06:09Oh, yeah!
06:11Morning, Pula.
06:13We didn't get any sleep last night. Too hot.
06:18And sweaty. I didn't sleep either.
06:24Ew.
06:24Hello.
06:26Good morning, everybody! Beautiful day!
06:29I've made you breakfast, cleaned the lab, and organized Zeta's astronaut card collection.
06:33I'm off to sweep the launch pad!
06:35Goodness! The heat's turned up to crispy!
06:38But who would...
06:40Ziggy!
06:40Oh, yeah! Ectotherms have to find ways to keep their bodies warm!
06:46That does it! Between slippery floors and falling into holes and blasting the heat, I've had it with Ziggy's help!
06:55And my astronaut card collection might be a mess, but it's my mess!
07:00I guess it's time for our bestest best buddy to go home.
07:04Well, let's all tell them together.
07:09Okay, Drew and Sue, you hang out here while I sweep up!
07:15Hey, gang! Oh, don't worry about all the dust!
07:18I'm gonna give this rocket a nice polish when I'm done, and...
07:24My rocket! My family!
07:26My sister's eggs are up there!
07:29What do I do? What do I do? What do I do?
07:31Don't worry!
07:32The emergency parachute will give them a soft landing!
07:35And your backpack was well padded!
07:38But what if they hatch and I'm not there?
07:40So Andrew could get lost!
07:42Not while we're around!
07:44This is a job for the Zula Patrol!
07:48Got it!
07:49By my calculations, I know where the rocket must have landed!
07:53The Zuhara Desert!
07:54But that desert's huge!
07:57It could take us days to find the rocket!
08:00I have some mates in the desert!
08:02Maybe they saw the rocket land!
08:08Wow, it's hot out here!
08:11Yeah, doesn't it make you feel full of pep?
08:14Hmm, the rocket should have landed near here, but I don't see it!
08:18Well, it can't have gone far!
08:20Come on, everybody!
08:22Let's start looking!
08:23Please!
08:24Let an expert tracker lead!
08:27Eeny, meeny, miny, moe!
08:29Hey, that's what I was going to say!
08:32No, I mean, it's my mate!
08:34Moe!
08:34Hey, Zigster!
08:36Long time no see!
08:37Pull up a piece of the rock!
08:40Ow!
08:40That rock is hot!
08:42Just the way I like it!
08:44Helps keep me toasty!
08:46Cause you're an ectotherm, right?
08:48Right!
08:49Wouldn't have it any other way!
08:51How's the family, Zig?
08:53Did your Aunt Agnes tail grow back?
08:55Yup!
08:56Everyone's fine!
08:57Except I just lost my sister's eggs!
08:59You didn't see a rocket go by, did you?
09:02Saw one go that way!
09:03Towards the lake!
09:05Good luck!
09:06Thanks!
09:08I don't see the rocket, and I don't see anyone to ask about it!
09:13Look closer!
09:14I see an ectotherm!
09:16Oh yeah!
09:18Fish are ectotherms too!
09:20But how do they get warm or cool in water?
09:23Isn't the water all the same temperature?
09:26Not at all!
09:27When we want to cool off, we swim to the deeper water where it's cooler.
09:31And if we need to warm up, we'll swim up to the warmer water near the surface.
09:35Of course, there aren't many of us around today, because they're all looking at the rocket.
09:40The rocket?
09:41Where is it?
09:42Just over there always.
09:46True!
09:47Sue!
09:48I'm here!
09:51But you're not!
09:52Where could they have gone?
09:55What is it, Gregor?
09:58He's saving my family for... for lunch!
10:02Not if we can help it!
10:05Just a little more...
10:09And...
10:09Yes!
10:14Go on!
10:15It's all you like, but I won't let you eat my family!
10:19Eat them?
10:20Why would I want to eat them?
10:22I just ate five days ago.
10:27Thank goodness ectotherms don't need to eat as often as we do!
10:31I found these alone by the rocket and wanted to protect them.
10:36But how do I know they're your family?
10:40I see the family resemblance!
10:44Here!
10:45True!
10:46Sue!
10:47It's so good to...
10:48Hey!
10:50What's happening?
10:51He-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he!
10:54Aww!
10:56Congratulations, Uncle Ziggy!
10:59When it's warm, we're on the go
11:02When it's cold, we're kind of slow
11:05Snakes, totes, and lizards
11:07We don't take blizzards in stride
11:09They make us colder inside
11:13What's an ectotherm to do
11:16When I'm cold and feeling blue
11:19Find a sunny place and I will be feeling just fine
11:24In the summer sunshine
11:28So, do you think you might have a couple extra rooms?
11:33And that just goes to show that when things heat up
11:36You want an ectotherm on your side
11:43Welcome to the Molto Moment
11:45Say, what are you doing in an ice bucket?
11:48We're being ectotherms
11:50We're sitting someplace cold to make ourselves even cooler
11:54That's not exactly what being an ectotherm means
11:58Oh, oh, let me help
12:00Ectotherms, like reptiles, fish, and amphibians
12:04Are animals whose body temperatures change
12:07With the temperature of their surroundings
12:09This lizard's body temperature is warm
12:13Because of the heat from the sun
12:15But now that it's cold outside
12:17His body temperature is colder too
12:21Ectotherms are more active when their environment is warm
12:24And less active when it's cold
12:27But what are they when it's dinner time?
12:29Late, let's go
12:31Oh my, see you next time
