When Dark Truder sends a phony distress signal, the Zula Patrol find themselves trapped on a remote island with extremely rapid weather changes. While the Zula Patrollers search the island for a power source to start their ship, they learn about endotherms and how they are able to keep their body temperatures relatively constant. Meanwhile, Dark Truder takes over their headquarters, and learns NEVER to touch anything without knowing what it does!

00:00Way, way up, where the planets do the hula. Spin and shot till you find yourself on Zula. Let's take
00:07off, we're all ready to go. It's fun to learn with the Zula Patrol.
00:13Wake up, Gorgah, it's time to play. Come on, Captain Bula, it's welcome the day. Where's that cedar? Ready to
00:21go. Wizzy and Wig are good to glow.
00:26Beakers bobblin', turnin' blue. Molto's makin' somethin' new. Way, way up, where the planets do the hula. Spin and shot
00:36till you find yourself on Zula.
00:39See you around for submission control. It's fun to learn with the Zula Patrol. Way, way up, where the planets
00:47do the hula. Spin and shot till you find yourself on Zula.
00:51See you around for submission control. It's fun to learn with the Zula Patrol.
01:06Space! I've run out of it in my garage. So where am I going to keep my collection of spaghetti
01:13hats? While I look for a spot, you check in with the Zula Patrol!
01:19Well, our annual health check-ups are excellent. We'll keep the temperature cuffs on today to get an overall reading.
01:28But right now, our body temperatures are all normal.
01:32Super! And speaking of temperature, I fixed the air conditioning.
01:42Corco, you can let us out now. In fact, we'd really appreciate it.
01:48Uh, maybe the air conditioning works too well.
01:55It's cold in here, but my thermometer cuff says we're still warm on the inside. I wonder why?
02:03Good question! For the Maltopedia!
02:08Some types of animals, like snakes and lizards, have body temperatures that change with the weather.
02:15If it's cold outside, they get colder inside. And if it's warm outside, they get warmer inside.
02:22They're called ectotherms. Ecto means outside. And therm means temperature.
02:30But some animals are able to keep their inside temperatures about the same, no matter what the outside temperature is.
02:37They're called endotherms. Endo means inside.
02:41Dogs, humans, even walruses are endotherms. It's really important for endotherms to keep their inside temperatures about the same, or
02:52they can't survive.
02:54But why don't they get cold inside?
02:56Because an endotherm's body changes the food it eats into energy, which is used to create heat to keep the
03:03inside of its body warm.
03:04But when the temperature outside gets really cold, or really hot, endotherms might need a little extra help to stay
03:13the same temperature inside.
03:15Walruses and whales, for instance, grow layers of fat to protect themselves from the cold, and to slow heat loss
03:21from their bodies.
03:22And when we shiver automatically in the cold, that motion helps create heat to keep the inside of our bodies
03:30warm.
03:30But what do endotherms do when it gets hot?
03:33Dogs pant to keep cool when it's hot. Humans sweat, or perspire.
03:40Right, Gorgia. All this temperature adjusting uses lots of energy, which means endotherms generally need to eat often.
03:48That reminds me, I'm hungry.
03:56A distress signal. It looks to be from a remote tropical island full of adventure.
04:02Someone's been stranded. This is a job for the Zula Patrol.
04:10Whoa. It is hot out here.
04:14But look, our body temperatures are still normal. I guess that's because we're endotherms.
04:19I wish we were not so hot-o-therms.
04:23Okay. Let's look for that distress signal. Somebody here is in trouble.
04:30And that somebody is you.
04:37Perfect. Everything's going according to plan.
04:40Oh, don't worry. I'm sure you'll find a way to blow it.
04:47It's dark truth. After him.
04:55It's not working. We can't take off.
04:58That's because you walked right into my trap, Fula Patrol.
05:03Enjoy your island vacation while I take over your headquarters.
05:08Whoa!
05:10Whoa!
05:14Oh, uh, I did leave one system working on your ship.
05:18The sprinkler system.
05:23It won't turn off!
05:25Oh, that trooter! But it's so hot and dry, I'm almost glad we're wet.
05:33Now it's cold! What happened? It was hot just a second ago!
05:38This place must be Echo Loco Island. It's known among scientists for weird, very rapid weather changes.
05:46Huh? Oh, great! Our coats are on the ship soaked, and we're stuck in wacky weather world!
05:54But even though we're cold and shivering, our body temperature inside is still normal!
05:59Until we find a way to get off this island, we must deal with this strange weather.
06:04We can get ideas from the local endotherms.
06:07This is what Trooter used to knock out our ship's power source.
06:11Hmm. You know, I just might be able to get our ship moving again if I can find another power
06:18source.
06:19Hey! Our tail radios are picking up a beeping sound!
06:23It's Trooter's distress signal. It must still be on the island. And if it's still working, it must have a
06:29power source, right?
06:31Right! If we can find it, maybe we can use it to restart our ship!
06:36There's not a minute to lose! Who knows what Trooter is up to at our headquarters! Follow those beeps!
06:44Oh, Traxie! I think we're going to enjoy our new home!
06:48With the power of the Zula Patrol equipment, I can control everything on Zula, right from the comfort of home!
06:54Trudy, you do realize you don't have a clue about how to work any of these things.
06:59Nonsense! Watch as I take over Zula with the touch of a button!
07:05Unauthorized access. Activating jelly hose.
07:08Right. I'll get the peanut butter.
07:12Look what that bird is doing! I wonder if that's to keep warm!
07:16Exactly! It fluffs its feathers to make a thick layer of air to keep out the cold!
07:22It helps keep its body temperature normal in cold weather!
07:31Except now it just turned hot!
07:34And sticky! I'll bet the bird is lifting its wings to let the cool breeze near its body!
07:42Let's push on, everyone!
07:44No sweat! I mean, I am sweating! But that's an endotherm thing!
07:50Right! We may feel hot on the outside, but our body's temperature is still normal on the inside!
07:57Hey! Hold on!
08:01Huh! Maybe that pig has a really good idea!
08:05Last one in the mud puddle is a rotten endotherm!
08:09Aw, now that feels cool!
08:14This island can't make up its mind!
08:18We need shelter! There's a cave!
08:23Ah, Molto's lab! The secrets of the universe are in this very room!
08:28In-wall vacuum cleaner activated!
08:32Let me go!
08:42Phew! We made it just in time!
08:51Mmm, that fruit looks mighty tasty!
08:55Huh? Who said that?
08:56Huh?
08:57Oh, it's just a bear!
09:00A bear?!
09:01Come on!
09:04Wait! Don't leave! You're welcome to share my cave!
09:09Well, thanks! We appreciate it!
09:12Say! How do you deal with all this quick-changing weather?
09:16Well, when it's warm, I eat a lot!
09:20When it's cold, I go into a special sleep called hibernation
09:25to lower my temperature and save my energy!
09:29I bet that thick coat of fur helps you stay warm, too, right?
09:33Sure does! It grows just before it gets cold and sheds when it's hot!
09:39I'm an endotherm, I sleep long-term, they call it hibernation
09:44My body cool, sometimes I drool and dream of my vacation
09:49Now, endotherm's the proper term for any bird or mammal
09:53The food they eat turns into heat, even in a camel!
10:01Well, time to hit the sack!
10:08Ah-ha! This must be where they keep all their most advanced equipment!
10:14Trudy, it's a kitchen!
10:16Sure, that's what they want you to think, but they don't fool me!
10:20This is clearly a Zulean Comet Deflector!
10:27You want that comet on hold weight or right?
10:30Whew! Now it's hot again!
10:33I wonder if we'll ever get off this weird island!
10:37Hey! The beeping is louder!
10:39It's Trudy's distress signal!
10:42Let me at it!
10:45Bingo! Our new power supply!
10:48Now if we can just get back to our ship before it snows again!
10:51I hope this works!
10:54I'm in command now, Traxie!
10:57With the Zula Patrol alert system, I can send out false alarms all over Zula!
11:02Panicking everyone!
11:05Make it stop!
11:10Don't look now, Trudy!
11:11But the Zula Patrol ship is back!
11:13I'm coming in for a landing!
11:16Stay calm, Traxie!
11:18We'll escape in this elevator!
11:22Gee, Molto! It seems Trudy found your new rocket launcher!
11:26Hm-mm! It really worked better with a rocket!
11:29Well, at least we'll know where to find him from now on!
11:33In orbit over Zula!
11:34I hope he doesn't get cold!
11:36Nah, he's an endotherm! His body temperature will adjust!
11:40And so, if you see Dark Trudy orbiting over your house, you might throw him a sandwich!
11:46After all, endotherms do need to eat!
11:54Hello, body warmth fans! And welcome to the Molto Moment!
11:59Tessie, do you know how endotherms warm their bodies?
12:04By doing the chicken dance!
12:06Not exactly!
12:08Endotherms like these can keep the inside of their bodies around the same temperature!
12:12The bodies of endotherms control their temperature naturally by using energy from the food they eat!
12:18But when it's really cold outside, they get extra help!
12:22By making their own heat within their own bodies!
12:25And by cooling themselves when it's warm outside!
12:31Oh dear! Well, bye for now! Toodaloo!
