00:00I want to see the Cleveland Browns stack wide receivers.
00:02And I talked about this a couple weeks ago.
00:04I know you kind of feel the same way.
00:07Whichever wide receiver you draft first,
00:09make sure the second wide receiver that you draft is a complement to that wide receiver
00:15and then also to the guys that we think early on might be factors for the Cleveland Browns,
00:22those guys being Jerry Judy and Isaiah Bond.
00:26Don't forget, Cedric Tillman is still here as of now.
00:29So, you know, he hears the noise just like DeJuan Jones about the injury history
00:34and essentially the fans kind of writing these guys off.
00:38Just like, you know, from a performance standpoint, Zach Zinsser, he's hearing the same thing.
00:42And so if I am those three guys in particular, the motivation this offseason is very, very high.
00:51And, you know, the amount of work that I'm putting in behind the scenes when nobody is watching
00:57and, you know, even before I have to start doing so, it's got to be immense.
01:02What Spencer brings me to the next thing that I want to touch bases with you on
01:06and I'm curious to get your thoughts.
01:09So we heard this week about, you know, Todd Munkin saying that Shador Sanders essentially has been in the building
01:17more often than not,
01:18that he's seen him a lot.
01:19And he said that to this point, he hadn't seen Dylan Gabriel at all.
01:27And depending on who you talk to in the media, some people thought it was a big deal.
01:31Some people didn't look at it like it was a big deal whatsoever.
01:35I'm going to give you my two cents on it and how I see it.
01:38And I'm curious to know your thoughts.
01:40And we'll just take it from there.
01:43First things first.
01:44The very first thing that I have to point out, that if Todd Munkin was to say the same thing
01:49in reverse,
01:50that Dylan Gabriel was the one that was there in the building and, you know,
01:55he said about Dylan that I love to see a young quarterback realizing where he is
01:59and willing to put in the work to be early on to get to where he want to be.
02:04And then I asked about Shador Sanders and he said, I hadn't seen Shador to this point.
02:09People would have made so much of those comments.
02:13People would have absolutely 1,000% destroyed Shador Sanders online,
02:19in the media, on these various shows.
02:22They would have made this the biggest deal in the world.
02:26And I found it kind of funny how, you know, people were making it seem like,
02:32yeah, it's no big deal.
02:33You can't really work with the quarterbacks right now.
02:35The players can't really do much.
02:37You know, it's not like anybody has to be here.
02:39If you're here on your own on the court, that's something that you want to do.
02:43But nobody is making it seem like, you know, it's something to be made into a thing.
02:52And this is why it kind of irritated me.
02:55I'll start my comments by saying this.
02:57If Dylan Gabriel don't want to be there before he has to schedule it,
03:01scheduled to be there, and he wants to spend his free time, off time,
03:06doing other things, he might be dealing with family emergencies, et cetera.
03:09However, that's on him, and I'm not going to knock him for it.
03:13But what I don't appreciate is people downplaying the work that Shador Sanders
03:18is putting in before he, quote, unquote, has to.
03:23And I'm going to tell you a few reasons why.
03:24And you know me pretty well.
03:26So I think, like, it would make sense to you.
03:28One of the first things I say when we start our show every Saturday is,
03:34good morning, if you woke up, you already won.
03:37I hope you are doing something right now that your future self, a thank you for.
03:42You've heard me use the analogy of my father and my grandfather telling me,
03:46Earl, sometimes that extra mile, it don't have much traffic on it.
03:50We talk a lot about integrity, you know, doing what you're supposed to be doing
03:55when nobody is looking.
03:56We talk about the little things, putting in that work when you're not scheduled
04:00to put in that work and how we believe that all those little things add up
04:05and they work in your favor when your, quote, unquote, moment comes.
04:09A lot of people, me and your age, we grew up in the Kobe Bryant era.
04:13We understand Mamba mentality.
04:16Imagine somebody telling Kobe Bryant those 2 a.m., 4 a.m., 6 a.m. workouts
04:21that he was doing when he wasn't, quote, unquote, required to be doing them,
04:25that those things didn't matter and those things were not a big deal.
04:29He would tell you BS and this attributed to me becoming the legend
04:34that I ultimately became.
04:37If you feel like, if you're somebody who feels like it's not a big deal
04:40that Dylan wasn't there, okay, so be it.
04:42But don't poo-poo and don't minimize the energy and effort Shador Sanders
04:47is putting forth and understanding what type of time it is knowing that this job
04:52is up for grabs and he's willing to do every single thing possible
04:55before he's scheduled to do so to put himself in position to win
04:59when me and you believe as people that in real life and sports
05:03and everywhere else, that's how you put yourself in position to win
05:06and have success by doing those little things.
05:09I think this is a classic case of, like, you can have varying opinions on things.
05:17I can only speak for myself.
05:19Like, you don't have to say it doesn't matter and then also poo-poo Shador.
05:25I've been very clear and I've talked all the time about how I think Shador
05:30has clearly tried to make putting the time in matter
05:35and he chose to be here more often during his off-season time.
05:40I think that's good.
05:40Like, I think it's a good thing.
05:42He wants to show face.
05:43He wants to be here.
05:44The important thing to remember is, like,
05:46he can't even talk football with Tom Munkin right now.
05:49That's against the NFL.
05:50Like, he can't even be in his office like, hey, let's draw plays.
05:52So anything he's doing is on his own.
05:54But not to take away from that, I'm just saying, like,
05:57it's not like him being there means him and Tom Munkin are out on the field
06:01drawing up plays.
06:01And that's my point.
06:03Right.
06:03No, I just want people to know that, though,
06:05that it's like people are choosing to do their workouts in different places.
06:11Obviously, Deshaun's down in Florida working with Jerry Judy and other guys.
06:14Dylan Gabriel, I'm assuming he's working.
06:16He lives in Hawaii.
06:17That's really far away.
06:18So I'm sure he's like, I'm trying to spend family time while I work out,
06:21whatever he wants to do.
06:23Shador's been pretty clear, though, that, like,
06:24he's been trying to put the work in.
06:26And so I agree with you.
06:28Like, it shouldn't be a – here's what I would say.
06:31This doesn't have to become a Shador versus Dylan thing is my main point in this.
06:34Like, it doesn't have to be, well, look what Shador's doing
06:37versus look what Dylan's doing.
06:38Look what Dylan – Shador's doing what he wants to do for his work.
06:41He wants to be here for it.
06:42I think that's great.
06:43I think Dylan, we can't assume anything when it comes to what he's doing
06:46in the offseason.
06:47I'm assuming he's still working because all these guys that's on some level
06:51are still always kind of working in the offseason to get their bodies right
06:55and stay in shape and whatever and prepare for the next season.
06:58But I don't – I also don't blame him for doing that on his own time
07:01wherever he wants to do that, wherever he's choosing to do that.
07:04When he's not required to be in the building.
07:06I think that – it's the differentiator where it's like –
07:08but the thing I will say, and this is something I talked to Lance about,
07:13Lance Risen this week, at that position, I also can't be mad at people
07:18who think that it's a bad look that Dylan's not here.
07:22Because when you're the quarterback of a football team, everything's about optics.
07:26And so if you're not out in the forefront showing us I'm in the building
07:33or if the coach is making it known he hasn't seen you in the building,
07:37that does stand out because you're a quarterback.
07:39So he can't be mad at the optics of it even though I'm not taking anything away
07:46from him in terms of what he may or may not be doing.
07:48He could certainly still be out there working.
07:50I think that's fine.
07:52I just think it's important to remember like right now
07:54wherever people are choosing to work is totally up to them
07:57and they can't – they're not even allowed to be like coaching –
08:01coached up or talking about plays or designing things.
08:03It's all their own work.
08:05It's just a matter of where you choose to do it essentially.
08:07All right, so my rebuttal to that is you're one, you're right.
08:10Wherever you choose to do your work, that's on you.
08:13And yeah, at this point, no, you can't be coached up.
08:16But I think the point of not being able to be coached up right now
08:20is totally irrelevant because it goes back to what are you doing
08:25when you're off the clock?
08:27What are you doing when you're not scheduled to be doing these things?
08:31And I think that every situation is different depending on where you are
08:36in your career and what the dynamic of your football team is.
08:40And I just go back to – and I'm paraphrasing here.
08:44But when he spoke on Shador Sanders, he said it is refreshing
08:47to see a young football player that understands where he is
08:51and is willing to put in the work right now to get to where he want to be.
08:55Last time I checked, Dylan Gabriel, rookie season, rookie campaign
09:00wasn't all that great either.
09:01There's a starting quarterback job that is supposedly up for grabs
09:06and these three men as of right now will be competing for it.
09:10And like you said, it is noteworthy that the head coach highlighted the fact
09:15he hadn't seen you yet.
09:17I got to believe that you are more built like me that if we had a new program director,
09:24we would have at least stopped by the studio to introduce ourselves to our new boss, right?
09:31Has Miles Garrett done that though?
09:33I don't know about – I'm talking about Dylan Gabriel.
09:35I'm just – I understand.
09:36You're trying to switch the subject.
09:37I'm talking about Dylan Gabriel.
09:38I'm just saying like Miles has to introduce himself and he's the star player of the team.
09:41We're talking about Dylan Gabriel.
09:42Would you have stopped by and introduced yourself to the new program director,
09:46you Spencer Drake?
09:47Yeah, I mean I probably would.
09:48So I would have too.
09:49So like trying to throw Miles Garrett into this conversation,
09:52I'm talking about the quarterback role.
09:54That's the star of the team.
09:54But I'm talking about the quarterback role.
09:56That is the face of the franchise.
09:57Andrew Perry just trying to convince us that he's not trading him.
09:59And actually, Miles Garrett ain't got to show up now.
10:01He ain't got to show up to OTAs.
10:02OTAs, we know what type of time Miles Garrett is on.
10:05Miles Garrett's job is to show up in September and produce like he's been doing.
10:08His job is not up for grabs.
10:10I'm talking about these three guys with a position that is up for grabs right now
10:15and the starting quarterback job.
10:16Again, I understand what you're saying where it's like it's different
10:20because the position and the situation with the positions are different.
10:24But I just think it's wrong for any of us to throw like,
10:27hey, well why hasn't he come in and met the coach yet?
10:30I guarantee you there's a lot of guys on the team who haven't come and met the coach yet.
10:32Dylan can do what he wants to do.
10:34Has Seth Tillman been in the building?
10:35He's a receiver who's fighting for a job.
10:36I thought of my comments with saying that Dylan can do what he wants to do.
10:39And I'm not knocking Dylan for not doing it.
10:41I'm saying I wouldn't be doing it.
10:42But what bothers me is people minimizing the fact that Shador Sanders is doing the little things.
10:48The extra things when nobody is looking that you're not quote unquote being paid for
10:53or scheduled to do and making it seem like those things don't matter.
10:56Again, I'm not trying to lessen anything Shador has done.
10:59And I certainly am not the person who ever does that because I've been saying since he got here last
11:03year
11:03that I see the effort he's putting in.
11:06And I think he learned some things along the way about what he has to do, how he shows face.
11:10He was the guy during the summer when they broke for summer who was working out at local high schools
11:16and doing stuff.
11:16So I've never knocked Shador for his work ethic.
11:19I've never knocked Shador for trying to stick around during the offseason and be present in the building.
11:23And yes, I think that's a good thing for him.
11:25I just think it's disingenuous to put Dylan Gabriel and Myles Garrett in the same sentence
11:29when they ain't even on the same type of time.
11:32Again, I understand the situations are different.
11:33I'm just saying like I think it's wrong to say, hey, when there's a new coach,
11:38this guy should be coming in to meet him.
11:39But it's like I guarantee you half the team hasn't even come in to meet Tom Munkin yet
11:42because they can all be wherever they want to be.
11:45And yeah, Myles Garrett's maybe the extreme,
11:47but there's other positions on this team that are like up for grab positions
11:50that might not be in the building to meet Tom Munkin yet.
11:51But he's the only quarterback on this team that hasn't done so.
11:54Understandable. I get it.
11:55But also we don't even know how long Deshaun was here.
11:57Deshaun could have been here for like a medical, met him, and then like left.
11:59And who knows? He's working out with Jerry Judy.
12:01People think that's a good look too.
12:02So it's like, again, I'm just not –
12:06me saying that it doesn't matter that Dylan Gabriel hasn't been here
12:08in terms of like where he's at also doesn't mean that –
12:13it doesn't have to be a knock on Shador or what he's doing.
12:17But I also think it's wrong to just be like, oh, Dylan hasn't been there.
12:20So clearly, you know, he's behind the eight ball.
12:23I just don't think we can assume that.
12:24That part is different.
12:25But to say, well, Miles Garrett hasn't either –
12:28Miles Garrett is the reigning defensive player of the year.
12:30Dylan Gabriel hasn't even earned a damn thing yet.
12:32That's all I'm saying.
12:32So –
