00:00we bring on daniel oyufusi of espn next on the make it right call call right hotline now daniel
00:06we started the show and i told everybody how funny it was that i hit you up yesterday like
00:10hey bro can you do a hit in the morning and daniel was like yeah i kind of already talked
00:15to spencer
00:16at that moment i realized that there was a communication gap between me with our phones
00:21man i don't know what it is and my co-host but daniel bro man i know you busy i
00:25thank you for
00:26your time this morning this is my first question for you because the last two weeks you follow me
00:31you see it i've been kind of coming out here saying that this is the realistic plan for for
00:37the cleveland browns at quarterback your room is your door sanders deshaun watson dylan gabriel
00:41possibly whatever rookie developmental quarterback that they add in a draft we spent the last month
00:47or so this show this station other places talking about the possibilities of a week of malik willis
00:53or or kyla murray or trade for mac jones etc maybe i'm crazy but i feel like that this was
01:02the plan
01:03all along how do you see it i don't know if i'm gonna go as far as to say like
01:09that was the plan
01:10now you got to remember like after the season ended andrew barry did say like we're gonna do
01:15like we're gonna explore the quarterback market because we have to and honestly i think that
01:19you know i've only been here for for now two seasons two years but i feel like for the most
01:24part andrew barry has been like fairly forthcoming like sometimes he builds you a little okey-doke like
01:28the travis hunter otani um the unicorn stuff and he kind of pulls one over you but like for the
01:34most
01:34part i feel like he's fairly forthcoming and pretty honest uh about about where the team is and what
01:39they're doing so when he said you know we're going to score the quarterback market like i thought that
01:43that was that was a pretty genuine statement like of course they're going to look at what's out there
01:47um but then like you kind of looked at what the the landscape was like malik willis collar murray
01:53to a tongue of aloha like it was a mixture of like players that the browns probably weren't going to
01:59be as interested in as uh at their price market and vice versa with malik willis uh so some guys
02:05come kind of retread guys and tua and collar who probably weren't going to be as interested in coming
02:09to the to cleveland and i remember what really stood out to me was at the combine in late for
02:14and obviously spencer was there as well he probably will remember this as well
02:17i asked ab specifically do you think you'll be able to get a starting collar quarterback in free
02:24agency yeah and he said tbd and i thought that was really interesting because if you ask ab like
02:30do you think you can get you know multiple quality starting offensive linemen in free agency i think
02:35he probably would have told you like i think that there's going to be some some uh realistic additions
02:39for for us and that we're going to target um so when he said tbd on bringing in like a
02:44legitimate
02:45free agent starting quarterback that's when i was just like i don't know um i think that you know
02:50realistically to your point realistically the uh the best pathway the most the the best pathway for
02:57the browns in this current roster and the shape of this roster for them to contend is for one of
03:03these incumbent guys uh to to take off and really you're looking at shador because he's younger um you
03:10know you saw some flashes this past year like that is uh in a ideal world for the browns that
03:17is their
03:17pathway to contending in 2026 and beyond the question is you know is that realistic impossible
03:23and i think that you know obviously the first and second waiver for agency has passed no quarterback
03:28has been added the only other real logical way for them to add a quarterback is is through the draft
03:34but they're not going to get fernando mendoza we'll see about ty simpson and some of these other guys
03:38uh but really i think that this current quarterback room is what we're looking at when we talk about a
03:43quarterback competition and who's going to uh lead this offense in 2026 so i guess off of that sort
03:48of last part of that answer daniel you know i i one thing we know about this browns team is
03:53they
03:53this this you know andrew berry and his staff they like to carry four quarterbacks in the offseason
03:58so as you kind of project out where they could find another one do you think that could come from
04:03a signing of a veteran late do you think the draft is the the more likely possibility
04:08and also what does all this mean you think for dylan gabriel in the long run
04:13yeah i tend to think and it's just really just more a guess on my part is that they're they're
04:17going to look at the at the draft i mean i honestly don't even know who's out there left in
04:23terms of
04:23like a veteran quarterback and if you bring in anybody like i think jamis winston is still out there
04:28and he's been with uh todd munkin but it's like i don't know any type of veteran quarterback that you
04:34that you bring in like i don't know that you want to take away the reps that you really want
04:40to to
04:41give to the guys that are going to be competing and obviously we're looking at shador and deshaun
04:46watson and um obviously dylan gabriel has kind of become the forgotten man um you know i also asked
04:52as well at the combine like would you listen to any calls on on quarterbacks uh on your quarterbacks and
04:57you know ab kind of gave a pretty standard boilerplate answer like hey like we're we're always you know
05:02listening and we'll always at least tear out a call um but yeah i mean it's a dillian's kind of
05:08left in a weird spot because on the outside nobody really talks about him and that just kind of lends
05:12you to think that internally um you know that he's maybe not a priority and obviously uh there's the
05:19kind of the context of you know that really being a pick that was heavily um influenced or influenced
05:25by kevin stefanski who's no longer there so it is going to be interesting to see like kind of how
05:30dylan shakes up because it's kind of been it's kind of been uh you know laid out as at least
05:36externally through the media as deshaun versus shador um but you know when todd munkin has talked
05:44about this quarterback room he has you know always thrown in dylan in there as well um but it is
05:50going
05:50to be interesting because just like on the surface nobody kind of really is you know factoring dylan in
05:55this and you're still on the team right now daniel when you look at the upcoming draft and you've been
06:00here for for quite for a few seasons now so you've kind of grown familiar to what andrew barry's process
06:07may or may not be but as you stand right now today on the 21st of march what is your
06:13gut telling you
06:14that is what's more likely to happen the browns stay at six and draft either a lineman wide receiver
06:22best player available or they actually trade out of that six spot down to 12 or lower
06:29my gut tells me that right now that a trade is possible and you just you know i think back
06:37to
06:37uh last year when they had the second overall pick and again i think that ab made very very um
06:44pointed and and like he she chooses his words very carefully and i look back you know especially with
06:50the context of them trading out of the pick to get let's possibly get travis hunter he talked about
06:54you know months before he talked about using the second overall pick and getting the most value out
06:59of it whether that was using it to uh to pick a player to trade for a player to trade
07:05back and
07:06ultimately they traded back to five to get the extra uh first rounder um in this this year's draft as
07:12well
07:12some other draft compensation um and i just think that like this is a draft that's not like full of
07:17like
07:18as many maybe blue chip prospects in as in years past and especially on the offensive side of the
07:23ball where the browns are probably going to target that sixth overall pick like there's i don't think
07:28that there's a surefire um wide receiver like a jamar chase or malik neighbors where you know like hey
07:35if that guy's at six we're running the card up or even uh you know um an offensive tackle like
07:41a
07:41tristan wharfs or panesuo where it's like all right if that guy's there we know for sure we got a
07:45uh decade long pro bowl all pro type lineman um so i just think like obviously you need a you
07:52need
07:52a trade partner you need somebody that's you know really um incentivized to move up or really wants
07:57to move up has an appetite for that um but my gut tells me that like if andrew berry is
08:04trying to get
08:04the most value out of six he's going to really be working those but you know the phones to see
08:08if he
08:09can move back to maybe like a like a 10 or a 12 and then you know you you still
08:14you pick up an extra
08:15third rounder in this year's draft and you can get you know whether it's you know still a monroe
08:19feeling or if you know that's not the route that you're going to go on wide receiver you can still
08:24get one of those uh one of the top three wide receivers in this draft talking to daniel oyafusi
08:29espn on the make it right call kyle wright hotline daniel based on what we've seen the browns do so
08:34far
08:35in free agency what do you think we can decipher about their overall draft plans going into april
08:43well i think that like i feel like any like smart functioning team operates um free agency
08:51in a manner in which you want to fill uh your glaring holes and you want to fill enough holes
08:57to the point where like you can go best player available and obviously we know that this off
09:01season is uh really geared toward uh uh the offensive side of the ball but um you know i thought
09:08the the
09:08browns were smart and you know like the first way for free agency like they got they bring in three
09:12starting offensive linemen and they re-signed tevin jenkins who could possibly uh who could possibly
09:18start at guard or somewhere and then you know the second wave like they've just been kind of like
09:22like filling just plugging in the holes a little bit like you add you know aj epineza like that's
09:26that's your that's your third fourth defensive end um you know you add just little pieces here and
09:31there that'll allow you to really just go into the draft and say like okay we know we have like
09:35some we still have we still got a tackle left left tackle wide receiver um but as you go like
09:40into like day two and you know into day three it's like you can really just pick the best player
09:44uh
09:45available and really go about that route and i think that that's why like if you talk to people
09:49in the organization like they'll say like that's really the the mode of thinking that they had last
09:53year where it was like okay we know we have all these needs but like we just got to get
09:57good players
09:58like you know a lot of people did not expect carson swessinger at at 33 but he was a first
10:03-round talent
10:04in the eyes of a lot of teams and you know they were like hey we might need a wide
10:08receiver we
10:09might need a tackle but like this is the best player on our board so we're going to take that
10:13guy and we know that we're going to get a really good player so obviously you know uh next month's
10:17draft is going to be geared toward the offense i expect them to uh take you know offensive players
10:23really with both two of those both of those first round picks um but they put themselves in a spot
10:28where it's like all right you can go bpa and you're not like feeling bad about that
10:32so last year we seen andrew barry take two quarterbacks that probably won't happen again
10:36this year we seen him take two running backs that probably won't happen again this year
10:40but as we talk about the wide receivers and we talk about some of those top three wide receivers
10:44you just said you know he he can possibly trade down and still get one of those big three
10:49is it likely that he still adds another wide receiver say round three or round four this nfl draft
10:55especially knowing that the drop off that wide receiver is not as great as it is with the tackle
11:01position yeah i mean if there's i mean it would be smart to double dip there you know um just
11:08because
11:08again there might not be like a true true blue chip wide receiver prospect in their strath but you know
11:14when you talk to people who you know consume grass film for you know for a living they talk about
11:20how
11:20there are a lot of uh it is a deep pool where like in a lot of different you know
11:25styles of wide receivers
11:26um that you can get in in the second and third round and obviously on the browns have some extra
11:31picks
11:31um it would make sense like even if you go tackle at six or wherever and then you get wide
11:37receiver
11:37at 24 maybe you go back at it at 39 or 70 like it would make sense to double dip
11:42um just given you know
11:45how how much this uh wide receiver i mean it was the least productive wide receiver room in the nfl
11:49in terms of receiving
11:50ours so it would make sense to use that draft capital and double dip and get maybe two different
11:55styles of wide receivers that you really like um and just add some competition add some new blood
12:00uh to that room in 2026 daniel i've made my point on this earlier today but i want your thoughts
12:05on the browns rule proposal to push out the years that you into the future that you can trade draft
12:13picks
12:13from three to five yeah so it was funny to see like the instant reaction on social media because
12:20i think that it's just i feel like it's just kind of natural and just everyone to kind of just
12:23clown
12:23the browns and just kind of make fun of uh make fun of whatever they try to propose or put
12:29forth and
12:29a lot of people were saying like oh well you know like what why would you give andrew berry more
12:33opportunities to trade even more draft picks and run the team even more but i don't think it was maybe
12:37i don't think it was and even like people were saying oh well they're trying to trade miles gary for
12:41five
12:41picks like i don't think it's about that like if you really read like the entirety of the proposal
12:44it was about like giving giving teams more flexibility and like you look to the to the nba
12:51where like they can trade picks uh out way more than than three years um but maybe you don't like
12:56stack like let's like take the deshaun watson trade for instance maybe like they don't trade um three
13:02straight first round picks but you maybe stagger some of those picks out um you know over over the
13:08course of five years and um yeah like you know you're still trading picks a little a couple years
13:14out there but maybe you have a little more flexibility in the uh in the short term like
13:18maybe you know you you spread out those three first round picks and then uh you know the browns maybe
13:23would have had an extra first or an extra second um you know while you know deshaun watson was injured
13:27and struggled and maybe they could have added a quarterback or added some other talent um in the
13:31meantime instead of just being you know straight out of you know high-end draft picks for three straight
13:35years i think it's really more about like flexibility um and just giving teams more options
13:39um in terms of those those first round picks and you know picks in total and you know as a
13:45whole
13:45c-year-old daniel gets it yeah daniel does get it you know but daniel a young og just like
13:51us so i
13:51ain't surprised that he get it daniel i'll wrap with this so uh we had a host on our station
13:57who said
13:57he doesn't believe that todd munkin will be here once the browns move into their new home
14:01i've heard other people say you know or painted at least as if if todd munkin doesn't have success
14:09this year it can be a wrap i don't look at it that way i don't look at the situation
14:14as
14:15he's on some type of clock that his leash is so is is so much shorter than kevin stefanski's that
14:22he has to have instant success do you get the vibe that todd munkin is going to be given the
14:28respected
14:29amount of time to really turn this thing around yeah i mean i don't think this is going to be
14:34like
14:34a one and done situation until unless like munkin completely falls on his face and i mean just just
14:40kind of knowing who he is as an offensive line what he's able to do in baltimore like i don't
14:44i don't
14:44think that that's the case um but you also got to keep in mind like what the owner what ownership
14:49has said you know and jimmy haslam did say like he thought that this was a roster in 2025 that
14:55was better
14:56than it's uh than it's 5 and 12 record he thought that they were able to win um a lot
15:01more games and
15:01they're not really like rebuilding this thing they're in a weird spot obviously with with the
15:06quarterback situation but it's not like they're tearing the thing down um so i mean they're adding
15:11they're they're they're building this team up especially this offseason with like the intent
15:16to win games now obviously like the quarterback situation just uh remains like the the big question
15:21mark but like they're expecting to win games um are they expecting to be a super bowl contender
15:26i don't know about that like i think that internally like to a man they would say uh we're not
15:31there yet
15:32we're not ready to take that leap um but i think that todd munkin was brought partly in due to
15:38the fact
15:38that they thought that he could develop players and that he could build a system that could put forth a
15:43better way better product uh especially on offense that we saw uh the past year so i think that
15:47there's going to be obviously some patience for the new coach and time for him to get his players
15:52and institute his vision and his scheme um but yeah i mean i i think that there is an expectation
15:57that this team is going to be better uh you know than last year you know given the coaching change
16:02and uh the amount of resources that they're going to pour into this offense in the draft uh next month
16:07all right daniel we gotta let you go i was gonna ask you something goofy like do you play
16:10playstation or xbox so i think spencer played xbox and i played playstation
16:14i played playstation growing up but i i i'm not really a gamer anymore i feel like i gave that
16:20up
16:20post-covid like i just like burnt myself out i played too much 2k during covid
16:25too much money spent on vc brother i get it too much uh red dead redemption 2 during covid so
16:29i get it
16:30i played a lot of call of duty during covid i understand it man we was all on some type
16:33of
16:34time but listen hey daniel bro anytime we can like catch you on your busy schedule and talk to you
16:38man it's always great we thank you for joining us and we look forward to you joining us on the
