00:28Good evening.
00:31Clearly lots of people heard that I was speaking, so there are very few of us here today.
00:37I didn't get email.
00:42Hallelujah.
00:44Well, it's Palm Sunday in the UK today, isn't it?
00:48And some churches seem to celebrate it more than others.
00:55And, of course, it's not Palm Sunday in the Eastern Orthodox Church.
01:00Greek Orthodox and all of those, they're a week after us this year.
01:05And anyway, I was initially thinking of us looking at Palm Sunday and something along a Palm Sunday theme itself
01:14and its significance.
01:15But I felt led to look at something else which touches us between Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday.
01:24And this morning over at Broadway, Pastor Tim was speaking there, and I was pleased that when he opened up,
01:32he said much the same thing.
01:34He said, well, really, Easter is, it doesn't matter whether it's Palm Sunday or Good Friday or the Resurrection Sunday
01:42or whatever,
01:42because it's all just as significant and it's all interlinked in a major way.
01:50So I want to start this, actually, with a song about the resurrection and about what it means to each
02:04and every one of us.
02:06And it's an illustrated song.
02:08It's one of my favourites and I'm sure become one of yours if you don't already know it.
02:14There's a line that is drawn through the ages
02:23On that line stands an old rugged cross
02:33On that cross
02:36A battle is raging
02:43When it gained a man's soul
02:47For his loss
02:53On one side
02:55March the forces
02:57Of evil

04:58The battle was still raging, not all prisoners of war have come home.
05:17These were battlefields of my own making.
05:27I didn't know that the war had been won.
05:38Oh, then I heard that the king of the ages, he had fought all life's battles for me.
05:58And the victory, victory is mine for the claiming.
06:08Oh, I know, praise his name, I see.
06:17In this place, the battle is over.
06:28It is finished, there'll be no more.
06:38It is finished, the end of the conquest.
06:47It is finished, and Jesus is Lord.
06:55Oh, it is finished, and Jesus is Lord.
07:22Our talk is going to be going along those lines.
07:26You'll recognize quite a bit of that in the talk.
07:31And I've named this talk, The Day Jesus Died for 2026.
07:37Because, you know, it becomes so easy to forget the real significance of the Lord's death for us here today
07:46in 2026.
07:48It's so easy to think of it as something that happened 2000 years ago.
07:53And, yeah, it was incredibly significant then.
07:56And, yes, it's lovely that we've got salvation and so on.
07:59But it goes so much deeper, so very much deeper, and is so much more significant for us today.
08:07And that's a little bit of what I'd like to unveil.
08:11As we look around and see the world hurtling towards just what seems to be breakneck speed,
08:18you know, sort of really focused, it seems, on total chaos and destruction.
08:23We watch our TVs, and we watch, we can see live missiles coming down on cities.
08:33We can see them raining down on live on TV.
08:38And all of this is playing out in front of our very eyes.
08:43And it can make it very difficult to ignore what's going on and what's happening.
08:49And with some things, we can be quite divorced and we can divorce ourselves.
08:54But media makes it more difficult for us to be able to divorce ourselves from what's going on.
09:02And particularly, of course, if we've got family and friends around or close to those areas.
09:09And as much as we may know and believe what's really behind this and who it is really behind it,
09:16it can still seem too close to home, too raw, you might say, and even personal.
09:23We know that it's a mighty spiritual battle, don't we?
09:27We know there's a great spiritual battle happening in the heavenlies.
09:31And Jesus is there, the target of so much of this, but also the one who is above all of
09:40these things.
09:41And we see our leaders, our world leaders, and they don't exactly inspire confidence in us, do they?
09:51We see the likes of Trump, Netanyahu, Keir Starmer, EU, NATO, Arab leaders, all of these people.
10:03And each and every one of them acting as though they're really in control of something.
10:09And they know what's happening and they've got a plan.
10:12Yeah, it reminds me of who was that that used to go, I've got a cunning plan, you know.
10:21But it really reminds you of these people because they really are at a loss.
10:27It's quite clear that they're not in control.
10:32And yet, as Christians, we know who really is in control, as we said.
10:37And we know who is shaking up the nations and shaking up the arrogant leadership.
10:44And I think Psalm 2 gives us a bit of an insight into this.
10:49Why do the nations rage and the people plot a vain thing?
10:54The kings of the earth set themselves and the rulers take counsel together against the Lord and against his anointed,
11:02the Messiah, saying,
11:04Let us break their bonds in pieces and cast away their cords from us.
11:09He who sits in the heavens shall laugh.
11:12The Lord shall hold them in derision.
11:14Then he shall speak to them in his wrath and distress them in his deep displeasure.
11:20Yet I have set or installed my king on my holy hill of Zion.
11:26I will declare the decree the Lord has set to me.
11:30You are my son. Today I have begotten you.
11:34Ask of me and I will give you the nations for your inheritance and the ends of the earth for
11:40your possession.
11:41And you shall break them with a rod of iron, something that's quoted later in Revelation.
11:47You shall dash them to pieces like a potter's vessel.
11:50Now, therefore, be wise, O kings.
11:54Be instructed, you judges of the earth.
11:57Serve the Lord with fear and rejoice with trembling.
12:01Kiss or embrace the son, lest he, lest the Lord, be angry and you perish in the way when his
12:09wrath is kindled but a little.
12:11Blessed are all those who put their trust in him.
12:16My goodness, having read that, I know I'd rather be one of those blessed ones who put their trust in
12:24him.
12:25However, at times as violent as we're seeing, as times which are in turmoil as much as we see happening
12:36around us, even as Christians, we begin to wonder, do I really know?
12:43Particularly as there's that little awful voice which loves to whisper into our ears and create doubts and ask questions.
12:55At times like this, I find it comforting to remind myself of all that the Lord has already done and
13:02has got 100% right up to now.
13:06And therefore, he can't possibly be wrong with a little bit left that there is.
13:15This particularly clear at this time of Passover, Pesach, Easter, whatever you want to call it, because this is one
13:23of the great pinnacles of God's faithfulness shown to us.
13:27It's a climax of the scriptures. It's a climax of our faith.
13:32And as much as we have those voices in our ears, we hear the Lord as the Lord's children.
13:40We hear the Lord. I am the Lord, your Savior and your Redeemer, the Mighty One.
13:44And bless the Lord, O my soul, forget not all his benefits and all the other promises, all the other
13:51things we know about God in faith.
13:55We still have on the other side.
13:58But do you really know? Are you sure you got that right?
14:01Did God really say?
14:03And the reality is that only by looking back can we be reminded that God can be trusted.
14:15Recently, when I spoke, I touched very briefly on Daniel and Daniel 9-10, and we looked at that just
14:28very much in passing about the angel coming and giving those mathematical calculations to Daniel.
14:37And all about Christ and his coming and what was to come and the death of Christ and so on.
14:45And it was a hundred percent right in its timing.
14:50We call this the 70 weeks of Daniel, you know, all part and parcel of the 70 weeks of Daniel.
14:56Now, it is understood that 69 of those weeks have been filled.
15:03There's just one week left.
15:05Surely, if there's one week left out of 70 weeks, I'm sure the Lord is going to be just, we
15:14can trust him to be just as faithful in that one week as he has been in the 69 weeks,
15:21just as accurate as it were.
15:25So, Daniel knew and Daniel trusted in faith.
15:29He could see in faith.
15:31Even people of God, not just unbelievers, but I still hear it from a number of people of God here
15:38that they claim that crucifixion perhaps was tragic and could have been avoided and should have been avoided or it
15:48was a movement gone wrong.
15:49And you even hear the claim that Jews killed Jesus and you hear all of these different things and so
15:57on.
15:57But when we realize God's clock, his timing for everything, we realize there was a divine appointment that was choreographed
16:08by the Lord.
16:09It was decided by the Lord thousands of years in advance.
16:16And we see in Romans 5, 6 there, for just at the right time, when we were still without strength,
16:23or in other translations, still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly.
16:28That's us, the ungodly.
16:30But he did it at just the right time.
16:34God has timing for everything.
16:37So how can we be sure of all of that?
16:40How can we really know that it was all orchestrated by the Lord God himself, that he really is in
16:47full control, even of 2026?
16:53Well, quite simply, the first and main reason is that Christ died for us.
17:00He proved his love for us and that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
17:06Now, to understand the significance of that, I want to go aside for a little moment to build on this
17:15and look at, understand God's timing.
17:20We know both from the scriptures and from the Mishnah, which is the rabbinic commentary of the Old Testament and
17:28so on, that every day for thousands of years, ever since the tabernacle was built in the time of Aaron,
17:36there were two sacrifices, the morning and the evening sacrifice.
17:40The morning sacrifice of the Lamb was, in the Hebrew time, the third hour of the day.
17:48In our time, it was 9 a.m.
17:52And it was always at 9 a.m.
17:55And that was the morning sacrifice.
17:57The evening sacrifice was on the ninth hour of the day, 3 p.m. in our time.
18:05And we can see those two, how they worked and how that happened day after day, year after year, whether
18:18there were festivals or anything happening, they would continue and they would have the two main sacrifices day after day.
18:26The moment before a sacrifice was happening, there'd be one priest would go up to the temple mount with a
18:35shofar or big trumpet.
18:36And he would be up there and another priest would be down in the temple ready with a lamb and
18:45a knife.
18:47And at just the right time, exactly on the third hour of the day or the ninth hour of the
18:53day, if it was evening, the shofar would blow and the lamb would be sacrificed right at that time.
19:02Always exactly on time, like clockwork, year in, year out, century in, century out.
19:12And it didn't matter whether there were major festivals such as Passover and so on.
19:19And festivals, major festivals were told by the historians that they could be as many as a million people coming
19:26up into Jerusalem during Jesus' time, this was.
19:30And so there would be thousands, tens of thousands of lamb sacrificed.
19:34And various historians tell us that when they saw it, when they were there, that the blood of the lambs
19:44was flowing through the gutters and flowing through the pavements because it just couldn't be contained.
19:51There was too much blood.
19:53But the first and the main lamb was a normal daily offering for the sins of the people first.
20:01Now, Mark 15, 25 tells us exactly the exact moment that Jesus was nailed to the cross.
20:11He says, now it was nine in the morning or the third hour of the day, the third hour of
20:20the day.
20:20And we know that coincides exactly with the time of the morning sacrifice.
20:26And Matthew 27 and other gospels tell us that exactly halfway between the morning sacrifice and the evening sacrifice, at
20:3712 noon that is, there was a darkness over all land.
20:42The sun was covered, some of the translations refer to it as.
20:47So various things were happening.
20:50So what we can see then.
20:54The morning and the evening sacrifices on the third hour or 9 a.m.
21:00And at the ninth hour at 3 p.m.
21:04And the darkness at noon in the sixth hour at 12 noon.
21:08And yet Jesus was nailed to the cross at the time of the morning sacrifice.
21:14Jesus died and gave up the ghost at the time of the evening sacrifice.
21:22All of these things brought together precise timing.
21:27We can see how Mark covers this, Mark 15, 33 to 39.
21:33He covers all of this detail.
21:36And when the sixth hour has come, had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.
21:42And at the ninth hour, 3 p.m., Jesus cried with a loud voice saying,
21:48Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani, which is translated, My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?
21:54And, of course, he was quoting from Psalm 22, 1.
22:00And we see it in Luke, again, explaining about the sixth hour and the darkness over the whole earth until
22:08the ninth hour.
22:09And the whole sun was darkened and obscured and the veil of the temple torn in two and all the
22:15various things that happened at that time.
22:19And we see a fuller explanation from Matthew there.
22:25And as you can see, gives us more detail over there of other incredible things which happened, such as an
22:32earthquake with rocks split open.
22:35The graves opened up.
22:36The righteous saints came out of their graves and wandered around around Jerusalem and so on.
22:44And it seems that all of creation itself was responding to Christ dying there.
22:50All of creation itself was declaring something about Christ.
22:56We also see in John 19 something that's rather interesting, and that is about the wine and the vinegar.
23:05Later, knowing that everything had been finished and so that scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, I thirst, quoting Psalm
23:1522, 15.
23:16A jar of wine vinegar was there and they soaked a sponge in it, put a sponge on a stalk
23:22of the hyssop plant and lifted it to Jesus's lips.
23:26And that was according to Psalm 69, 21 as well.
23:30And when he had received the drink, Jesus said, it is finished.
23:36With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
23:41Hyssop.
23:42That's an interesting one.
23:44The hyssop plant there.
23:45Why is the hyssop plant?
23:47Why are we actually described what plant it was?
23:51Why is that important?
23:53Why wasn't it a cedar?
23:55Why wasn't it an oak?
23:56Why wasn't it something else?
23:58But it was a hyssop.
23:59The hyssop is an interesting little plant and it grows, can grow out of a rock, grows very wild all
24:07around the Middle East.
24:09Beautiful plant, lovely herb to use.
24:13But why is hyssop so important that it's specified in the Gospels as being offered up to Christ?
24:22Well, what we do know is that Exodus, Numbers, Leviticus, Hebrews and Revelation all mention hyssop.
24:33And they mention it in the sense of it being an integral part of blood ceremonies, sacrifices.
24:42Now, this one in Exodus 12, 22, we see this and this is at Passover.
24:48Take a bunch of hyssop, dip it in the blood that's in the basin, touch the lintel and the two
24:54doorposts with the blood that is in the basin,
24:57and none of you shall go out of the door of his house until morning.
25:01So that blood with a bunch from a bunch for hyssop, the hyssop was dipped in the blood and painted
25:09up like that.
25:11And we do know as well that King David in Psalm 51, 7 said, purge me with hyssop, purge me
25:21or cleanse me with hyssop and I shall be clean.
25:23You see, every Jewish listener knew something about hyssop that we don't really understand.
25:33And that is that it was an integral part to them hyssop was equated with atonement.
25:43Hyssop was always a part of the atonement of the blood.
25:48Now, this isn't some coincidence, but it's God showing us that he's been stitching this whole thread from creation through
25:57Exodus right through to Revelation.
26:01All the way through, it was stitched through and completed.
26:06We see something else that was happening there.
26:11And that is, as soon as Jesus cried out, it is finished, and gave up the spirit, the curtain in
26:19the temple is torn in two.
26:20Jesus lifts up his head and cries to his father, it says, Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.
26:27What time was it? 3 p.m. of course, the ninth hour, the evening sacrifice.
26:34On that Passover day, that's when the lamb was being sacrificed.
26:39So only 200 yards away roughly from Golgotha where Christ was.
26:45Now, God didn't just allow this to happen on Passover.
26:49Christ to be sacrificed on Passover.
26:52God orchestrated it down to the very last minute.
26:57He orchestrated it right down to the timings.
27:02And the interesting thing with all of this is the temple veil, that curtain, which is some 60 feet high,
27:1330 feet wide and five or six inches thick.
27:17This immense curtain was torn from the top to the bottom.
27:24And there's something in the Hebrew that's still maintained.
27:28And I'll touch upon that in a moment called Kriya or Keria, depending on what they say, how they sounded
27:38in the Hebrew.
27:39And that's still practice in Judaism.
27:41And so we see this temple veil, this enormous curtain torn from top to bottom.
27:47Now, that curtain, that veil had one purpose, to separate the presence of God from the people.
27:55That was its whole purpose there.
27:58Only the high priest could go behind that veil and only once a year.
28:04That's all he could do.
28:06And when Jesus took his sin upon himself and in that moment that he died and that veil was torn,
28:16we see that that barrier between God and man was destroyed.
28:22Direct access is now open to each of us.
28:26We don't need priests.
28:27We don't need high priests.
28:29We don't need any of that.
28:31We just need the Lord Jesus Christ.
28:34He opened the way for us through his own flesh by the shedding of his blood.
28:41Now, that Kriya, why is that important?
28:46Well, there's something more which could be recognized in the Jewish world.
28:50You see, whenever a person is in anguish, when they're mourning the loss or really, really angry because something has
28:59happened and they're showing their anger,
29:03they're showing their sorrow, whatever it is that they're showing, this extreme emotion, they grab their robes and they tear
29:11them like that.
29:12And it's torn from the top down to the bottom.
29:16That is called the Kriya.
29:19And there's still, well, we see examples of the Kriya, as you can see on the screen there.
29:25Reuben on discovering Joseph was missing from the pit.
29:29He does it.
29:31Jacob, Joshua and Caleb, David, Job, all of those as explained on there.
29:37And you can check them up when you see this online afterwards.
29:41You can pause and check each of these out because it is quite fascinating.
29:45And to this day, at Jewish funerals, the mourners will show up with, they don't always tear unless they're a
29:54very close family.
29:55They don't always tear their clothes, but the visitors, the friends and so on, they will wear a Kriya.
30:04It's pinned on to their clothes and it's a piece alleging a tear in the cloth.
30:13This serves as this profound physical expression of grief or anger, as we said.
30:21A feeling of a tear in somebody's heart following the loss of close friends or relatives or whatever.
30:31Now, we see two messages in the tearing of the veil.
30:37Firstly, we see a father tearing his garments in anguish over the death of his one and only son.
30:43But secondly, we see that the veil separating God and man came down and the way was thrown open by
30:53God.
30:53God has thrown open the way.
30:55You see, the heavenly father wasn't unmoved by the loss of his son.
31:01No father would be.
31:03And he tore his veil, as it were, his cloak, as it were.
31:10And at the same time, he showed that that separation was gone forever.
31:16So the father was touched again by all of this.
31:22Now, at the same way as we look carefully at the planning, at all the timings and all of these
31:29things, the little messages that we get throughout all of the throughout all of the Passover time and the crucifixion
31:41of Christ.
31:43We see everything linking us back to creation itself.
31:48And even, as we said, to the angel of death at Passover.
31:53You see, the angel didn't care who was in the house.
31:57He didn't care how good the family was.
32:00He didn't care how many sinners were in the house or what they'd done.
32:04What he cared was that he could see the blood of the lamb was applied to the doorposts and lintels.
32:11God is in the detail.
32:14He always has been, always will be.
32:16And all that detail always points to our Lord Jesus Christ.
32:22Yeah.
32:23Isn't that just so incredibly exciting for us?
32:28It's awful.
32:30It's awful.
32:30And at the same way, at the same time, in its awfulness, it is so incredibly encouraging for us that
32:38God sees us through his son, through the blood of the lamb.
32:43He sees the blood of the lamb.
32:46He doesn't see us for what we have been, what we have done, what we're doing and so on.
32:53He sees us through the righteousness of his son.
32:58So Easter Passover is a time of looking back and remembering with gratitude what Jesus has done.
33:07He paid the sins for all time.
33:10You know, there's nothing else for us to do.
33:14As that song had said, it is finished.
33:18He's done it.
33:19It is.
33:20There's nothing else for us to do.
33:23It's perfect.
33:24It's complete.
33:27That one Greek word, teteleste, it is finished.
33:32It's three words in English, somehow, but teteleste in Greek.
33:37It means all of those things fulfilled, completed, perfect, perfected, concluded, discharged, paid in full, consummated, reached the end, aim,
33:49mission accomplished, as it were.
33:52You see, when Jesus cried out teteleste as he died, it wasn't a cry of anguish.
33:58It wasn't a cry of failure.
34:00It wasn't a cry of despair or loss or anything else.
34:03It was a declaration.
34:06That's what it was.
34:07It was a declaration of victory for us.
34:11It was a message to each and every one of us.
34:16Teteleste, it is finished, but it goes much deeper than that.
34:19You see, teteleste is used in three contexts and in many cases is still used in these contexts in some
34:30ways in very formal settings.
34:33First, in a business context.
34:35You know how before the days of electronic invoicing and so on, you used to take your little invoice or
34:42your receipt to be paid, your bill to be paid to the water board or whoever, and they would be
34:48paid over and then they'd bring out the stamp in red normally and stamp it paid in full.
34:54Well, they do that in Greece.
34:57Well, they do that in Greece.
34:57Teteleste, it says, paid in full.
35:01It's used in the judicial context.
35:06In a court.
35:07In a court.
35:07If you go and pay your fine and it's all paid up or you've been to prison and your sentence
35:14has been fully served and completed.
35:16The documentation is stamped, completed, discharged in Greek.
35:23One word.
35:24Teteleste.
35:25So in a judicial context.
35:28And finally, in a military context.
35:31A battle won.
35:33Used in triumph.
35:35They use that word in triumph.
35:37Teteleste.
35:39We've completed it.
35:40It has been a victory.
35:43Mission accomplished.
35:45Teteleste.
35:45Teteleste.
35:46Isn't that amazing?
35:47To see all those meanings in that one word.
35:53Therefore, Jesus' declaration, Teteleste, says the debt of our sins have been paid in full.
36:01That's the debt.
36:03The judgment of our sins has been fully served.
36:07Teteleste.
36:07The war in the spiritual realm against Satan, death, and sin has been completely won in Christ.
36:14Teteleste.
36:15So the work of salvation, reconciliation, victory, and a new life is fully ours through faith in Christ Jesus.
36:26Dear friends, even if you forget everything that I've said, even if you ignore everything I said before that,
36:36don't forget that one word, Teteleste, because that is declared by Christ personally for each and every one of us.
36:47It's the Lord's message for us in 2026.
36:50It's declared for you so you can remember you don't need to struggle, you don't need to worry, you don't
36:57need to fear and strive anymore, because there's nothing else for you to do.
37:02It's all been done.
37:03He's covered it.
37:04He's perfected it.
37:05He's completed it all.
37:07He's done everything you'll ever need.
37:10So rest in him.
37:14Teteleste.
37:15Teteleste.
37:16I'd like to finish with a few words from Revelation 5, 12, 13.
37:26Worthy is the Lamb who was slain to receive power and wealth and wisdom and might and honour and glory
37:35and blessing.
37:38To him who sits on the throne and to the Lamb be blessing and honour and glory and might for
37:46ever and ever.
37:48Amen.
37:49Amen.
37:51I will sing the wondrous story of the Christ who died for me.
38:03How he led the realms of glory for the cross of Calvary.
38:14Yes, I'll sing the wondrous story of the Christ who died for me.
