Join us for a special celebration of Chartridge and its internationally loved Church. As we mark the 140th year of being in the current church building, our popular keynote speaker, Harry Smith, will lead our service. This celebration is a time to remember days gone by and to celebrate the present influence this seemingly insignificant Church has across the world through modern technological advances in social media.

00:00as we've welcomed the congregation here this evening on this anniversary we also welcome
00:07of course those who are joining us on the many platforms in this country and around the world
00:13and now christine's going to bring us a couple of readings 2 timothy chapter 3 beginning at verse 14
00:19but as for you continue in what you have learned and have firmly believed knowing from whom you
00:27learned it and how from childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings which are
00:33able to make you wise for salvation through faith in christ jesus all scripture is breathed out by god
00:41and profitable for teaching for reproof for correction and for training in righteousness
00:48that the man of god may be competent equipped for every good work i charge you in the presence of
00:56god and of christ jesus who is to judge the living and the dead and by his appearing and his kingdom
01:03preach the word be ready in season and out of season reprove rebuke and exhort with complete patience
01:12and teaching for the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching but having itching ears
01:20they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions and will turn away from listening
01:27to the truth and wander off into myths as for you always be sober-minded endure suffering do the work
01:36of an evangelist fulfill your ministry and now 2 corinthians chapter 4 verses 1 to 6 the light of the gospel
01:47therefore having this ministry by the mercy of god we do not lose heart but we have renounced disgraceful
02:01underhanded ways we refuse to practice cunning or to tamper with god's word but by the open statement
02:09of the truth we would commend we would commend ourselves to everyone's conscience and the sight of god
02:15and even if our gospel is veiled it is veiled only to those who are perishing
02:21in their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers
02:27to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of christ who is the image of god
02:33for what we proclaim is not ourselves but jesus christ as lord with ourselves as your servants for jesus
02:41sake for god who said let light shine out of darkness has shone in our hearts to give the light of the
02:49knowledge of the glory of god in the face of jesus christ amen yes tonight we're going to look over
02:57what for many will be familiar passages familiar things just to remind ourselves of the foundation
03:03this church we've heard was set up to stay firm to stay in the gospel in the word of god
03:13the story is told of an anglican church a little country anglican church like so many
03:19lovely old building set in a churchyard with tombstones around and at the entrance between
03:25in the where you went between a gap in the wall there was a wooden porch over the top and across the
03:34top of it the people had put it up the carpenter had engraved we preach christ crucified but over the
03:44years the ivy had encroached from the right and it became we preach christ then a little later a few
03:54years later it was down to we preach and then it ended up as we and that sadly is the story of so many
04:05churches that were set up founded on established on the authority of god's word and to proclaim the good
04:13news of salvation in and through christ jesus his son and over the years that's gone various reasons
04:22and so many now are not sure why they're there why they exist we thank and we praise the lord that
04:32this church as we remember it's it's been going more than 140 years of course but it's 140 years on
04:37this site in this particular building we remember that it has stayed faithful the people the lord's
04:44people here through thick and thin have stayed faithful to the word of god the apostle paul of
04:51course had a lot to say about the gospel remember that he had his um unique conversion experience
05:01in that he was confronted by the vision lord he saw the lord as he was persecuting christians and on his
05:08way to damascus to do it more and most people know the expression a damascus road experience
05:16and of course it refers most people sadly don't know what that means but it refers of course to that
05:23dramatic conversion and where he was one who persecuted the lord jesus said to him so not why are you
05:31persecuting christians why are you persecuting my people why are you persecuting me and the one who
05:37persecuted the lord through persecuting his people became the great apostle to the gentiles and through
05:47him the gospel spread beyond israel beyond the middle east and out into europe and by extension of course
05:55to us to us here in the uk his epistle to second epistle to timothy was one of two that he addressed
06:03to timothy and of course it's they've become known as pastoral epistles and titus which follows it
06:11one again to younger men who were going to take up the mantle paul was toward near the end of his life
06:19he knew he was dying paul had three imprisonments two in rome the first one in rome under house arrest
06:26for two years this one he was on death row and so here if you like we've got his final his last will
06:34and testament so we know what was of mega of primary importance to him and so here he is saying to
06:42timothy timothy timothy a younger man whom he'd mentored for presumably a number of years and who was
06:48going to take over the leadership of the church in ephesus he's telling him what is important
06:55timothy we gather was a rather timid man he knew what was happening to the church we prayed earlier
07:04for the persecuted church around the world and christians who are suffering and in many cases losing
07:10their lives for the gospel that was the norm at this time in the first century and timothy would
07:17know that and timothy would know that to make a stand to be a lead elder a leader in a church
07:24would be to put himself in the firing line and so paul's reminding him of the important things
07:32he's stirring him up if we'd read the whole of chapter three he tells him to understand that in the last
07:39days they're going to become perilous times times of mega difficulty of pressure of tribulation
07:45for the church he told them that and he said there lots of the things that we've got today
07:52lovers of self lovers of money proud arrogant abusive disobedient to their parents ungrateful unholy
08:00heartless unappeasable slanderous without self-control brutal not living loving good
08:09hang on paul surely can't get worse can it treacherous reckless swollen with conceit lovers of pleasure
08:16rather than lovers of god and we think well yeah that's a society outside that's the world that
08:23doesn't know christ but wait a minute the next phrase tells us paul's not talking about the world
08:30because he says they have the appearance of godliness ouch the people outside the world haven't got any
08:40appearance of godliness or any awareness of or any knowledge of what he's saying to timothy is and he
08:46warns that further on in this false teachers who infiltrate will infiltrate and have infiltrated the
08:53churches and this has been the time all through history and have led people astray having an appearance
08:59of godliness but they deny its power and what is the power of the true church what is the power of
09:07the gospel it is the power of the gospel it's the power of this book god is a speaking god god spoke
09:15in the beginning in the beginning god created the heavens and the earth but how did god do it
09:20by his word god said let there be light and there was light god said god said god said god said and he
09:29created all things within six days that we have now today and god's continued to speak and he's spoken
09:38down the ages through his word and his word doesn't change because he doesn't change if he needed to modify
09:45it it would because it was less than perfect and that could only happen if he was less than perfect
09:51and we need to confidently reaffirm and stand on this and refuse to budge an iota on it that this is
10:00the authoritative inerrant infallible effective complete sufficient and and also the the the one that's
10:13going to decide our destinies the word of god does not change and god uses his word it's the sword of
10:22his spirit the holy spirit who led people paul goes on here he said to timothy of course he said these
10:32things are going to happen he's going to say you've seen me you've seen my conduct you've seen my patience
10:38my love my steadfastness my persecutions and sufferings that happened to me at antioch in
10:43iconium and at lystra which per per or lystra which persecutions i endured yet for them all
10:49the lord rescued me indeed all who desire to live a godly life in christ jesus will be persecuted
11:00not some all without exception all without distinction you see we have today a gospel that
11:10largely has reflected the society in the west we're told that the generation now is we've had the all
11:17we've had the it's about me it's the now it's all about me generation my rights my life
11:26my body look at look out for number one the the plain selfishness of this but here it's all without
11:37exception and all without distinction the lord jesus of course in the gospel in his teaching
11:45spelt out the cost of discipleship if anyone will come after me let him deny himself it's not all about
11:53us it's got to be all about him take up his cross in the first century if you saw some saw somebody
12:02carrying a cross or rather just the cross piece of the cross which is what they did apparently
12:06you didn't ask him what his plans were for his next holiday you didn't ask him anything like that
12:14he only had one future he was on his way to die and following the lord is costly
12:22in this life it means i have got to humble myself not my will but yours
12:29and follow me jesus said you've got to put me before your family
12:35you've got to put me before brother sister mother father
12:38i have got to be first and so paul here says to timothy
12:43timothy keep your focus he says but for you while evil people are going to go on and imposters will
12:54go from bad to worse deceiving and being deceived but as for you i've said multiple times right across
13:02various churches denominations when there's a but in the bible stop go back at what's there before
13:09and then see the contrast but for you this is the difference you're not to be like this
13:17but for you continue in what you've learned and have firmly believed knowing from whom you learned it
13:28and how from childhood you've been acquainted with the sacred writings which are able to make you wise
13:34for salvation through faith in christ jesus it's a great blessing to have been brought up from an early age
13:43i thank god that i was taken along i didn't have any choice and in a church where emphasis was on
13:51from as small as i can remember being taught the stories of jesus being taught the bible stories
13:57and often it's what you learn when you're young that you remember throughout your life
14:02not everybody has that privilege and many who come to christ later in life often regret the fact that
14:10they haven't got that background timothy had it we're told paul tells us elsewhere that his grandmother
14:17and his mother were faithful believers who taught him and grounded him in the scriptures
14:22but it's not where you start that counts it's where you end up timothy continue continue this little
14:34church has continued the lord has been faithful up and down times times when it appeared even more
14:42recently that the doors were going to close and things were hopeless but we trust in the lord
14:48who built his church no he says but notice the sacred writings he's referring here largely of course to
14:56the old testament yeah a lot of the new testament had been written or passed around from little church to
15:03church there were no big churches in the first 300 years there were no mega churches in the roman empire
15:09they weren't permitted the christians the believers who had houses then a lot of them more than half of
15:17them would probably be slaves and would own nothing they the chapels the churches were there and the
15:22letters the epistles went from church to church from church group from house to house and so paul's
15:30saying here continue in what you've learned what you firmly believed you've been acquainted with the sacred
15:36writings why the scriptures and the letters the epistles that had already been written they are able to
15:44make you wise for salvation through faith in christ jesus
15:48salvation is found in no one else there's no other name given under heaven amongst men whereby we must be
15:57saved jesus of course made it clear himself i am or literally i i am taking the the name of god from the old
16:07testament i am as given to moses when he was commissioned he's saying i in effect as god am the way not a way
16:21the way the truth the life and in case that's not clear enough no one comes to the father but by me
16:32we have to confidently stand on these things because so many people and so many professing
16:39christians will now tell you well we're all going up a mountain and you can go which way you want you
16:46can go by christ or you can go by by muhammad or you can go by buddha or you can go by confucius or you
16:52can go your own way as long as you're sincere you'll end up in the same place that is not what the bible
17:00says that's a deception of the evil one faith comes by hearing by the preaching of christ
17:06only and so paul says salvation forgiveness of sins is only through faith in jesus christ
17:15and then we have one of the great 316s of scripture most christians are familiar with john 316
17:21probably the best known verse in the bible but have you looked at the other 316s there are some
17:27great ones i love colossians 316 for example but this is i won't digress this is one all scripture
17:34again all without exception or distinction is theonustis literally god breathed quite a few of
17:42our versions have said inspired by god that's vague we might say tennyson or shakespeare or milton
17:49or one of the great poets or authors they're inspired but god has actually breathed it out by his spirit
17:58into and through 40 human men who wrote the 66 books of the bible peter of course in his second epistle
18:07the first chapter he says scripture interpretation of scripture is it's not a matter of one's own
18:15interpretation he says we were eyewitnesses remember peter james and john were the three
18:21if you like in a circle of the 12 apostles they were the only three who were at the raising of jairus
18:27jairus's daughter from the dead they were the three who went up the mountain transfiguration
18:34there they saw the lord jesus christ in his pre-incarnate glory and there god told them that
18:43this one only jesus was his well beloved son listen to him and to him only moses was there representing
18:52the law elijah was seen there representing the prophets but the lord jesus was uniquely separated
19:01and but peter says we had that witness he says but you've got a better witness you've got one much
19:11surer and that's the written word because men wrote as they were born along a bit like a little ship
19:21or a little sailing boat sailing boat in a gale being swept along by the waves and by the wind
19:28born along and how many times in the old testament in particular do we read the word of the lord
19:34came to x y z moses for example he's not the only one who's told write down the very words that i give
19:43you we need to stand on this we need to insist on it it won't make us popular in a lot of circles and i
19:51can tell you that from experience home and abroad but but that is the truth that's what we must be
19:57prepared to be rejected to be criticized to be thrown out for and why because scripture's not
20:07just it's breathed out for god but it's by god it's profitable first of all for teaching
20:13you see we live in an age when people don't want to read people don't want to study they don't want
20:20to recognize authority they want little side bites they want entertainment how many churches have
20:27given up on just the preaching of the word how many churches have brought in gimmicks
20:33entertainment little things to try and we think it's illustration or it'll get people in or it'll
20:40attract the young people we must maintain our confidence in the word of god in acts 2 at pentecost
20:49of course what did the early church do four things what was the first one and in a scripture
20:56the order is the priority it's important the apostles doctrine the word of god teaching and you've got it
21:04first here all scripture is breathed out actually in the great commission which literally is not go
21:11as an imperative it's a participle having gone it's wherever you are it's not just those who go
21:19overseas on the mission field it's all of us wherever god has placed you make disciples that's the only
21:27imperative in the commission make disciples what's a disciple a learner teaching them to observe all that
21:34i have taught you you see the lord jesus himself the apostles you look at the old testament it's god has said
21:45believe it love it obey it and so then it's profitable for teaching for reproof
21:55or conviction for conviction for conviction and for training in righteousness to what end
22:02that the man that's generic a man woman boy girl of god that the true believer the christian the disciple
22:10may be complete equipped for every good work you see the gospel isn't just we stop at conversion
22:18and we sail to heaven and we live as we like and it doesn't really matter if we grow that you know
22:26making jesus your lord somehow a second stage and that's for the the people in the graduate class
22:34all believers are called to grow in grace and the knowledge of the lord jesus christ
22:40that christ should be formed in us and that's comes that's the work of sanctification
22:48the holy spirit works that we could to to make us more like christ to give us a greater hunger for
22:54the scriptures a greater love for the lord a greater love for his people and a greater desire to make
23:01christ known and paul says the scripture is the textbook for that the means that the holy spirit uses
23:10to do this but then we come to this very very solemn charge don't we
23:18paul says here and notice what he says he says i'm charging you timothy in the presence of god
23:25and of christ jesus who's to judge the living and the dead and by his appearing and kingdom
23:31there's not a higher court there's not a higher commission or charge in existence
23:38in the sight of god he says this is your commission this is your responsibility and what is it preach
23:48the word the word there it is herald the word it's the kind of proclaim it in the way that a town crier
23:54would the way that in ancient times before telecommunications of any kind if news was coming
24:01out from the king then people would travel on horseback or whatever and they'd go around and
24:06the town crier would say and she would shout out they'd pick the guy with the loudest voice
24:11and you pay attention this is what the king says what he's saying to timothy is you've got to preach
24:20with authority not wishy-washy not as if you're saying i want to apologize for this it's a bit
24:27you know i'm not i've got to do it but i'm not really that convinced if we don't have conviction
24:32who's going to listen to us if it doesn't excite us how's the word of god going to excite other people
24:38no he said preach the word be ready in season and out of season reprove rebuke and exhort with
24:47complete patience not with arrogance not with impatience we need to recognize them but for the
24:54grace of god we'd still be in darkness just for the grace of god although we might have been
25:02believers for many years we wouldn't have made any progress you know it's tragic to meet people
25:08who say i got converted 30 years ago but to see very little signs of any progress and any growth and
25:17any maturity in their lives no says paul to timothy when it's convenient in season and out of season
25:25when people want to know when people don't want to know when you're welcomed it's great to be in an
25:32evangelical church where people nod and smile and have got their bibles open i spend a lot of time
25:38in churches that that's not the case and that's much harder but my responsibility and the responsibility
25:45of all of us and it's not just those of us who are called to preach and teach it's every believer
25:50we are all christ's witnesses at the level of family at the level of neighbors work colleagues
25:57society whatever your club or society you're involved in on others the lord gives opportunities
26:04we've patiently got to make a stand and be compared be prepared to stand on god's word
26:11why for the time's coming oh boy aren't we here hasn't it arrived the time's coming when people
26:20will not endure sound teaching but what will they do they want their ears tickled they'll have itching
26:28ears they'll want them tickled they'll accumulate they'll gather they'll invite they'll welcome preachers
26:36who entertain them who make them feel good who give them a little self um building up
26:43um i don't know how to put this years ago we had one guy in the church we were in who used to say
26:50i come to church each week because i just want a little pick-me-up so that i can get through the week
26:56and it was just kind of i want just that kind of encouragement somebody to tell me how good i am
27:02so that in effect i feel great no no no it's sound teaching and and as the lord gives utterance and
27:14gives opportunity teachers to suit their own passions their own lusts and what will they do
27:20they'll turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths but then again he's coming
27:28back to timothy you're not to be like that timothy as for you always be sober-minded in other words
27:37don't waver don't be led to and straight don't be tempted to be a man pleaser paul said didn't he to
27:46the galatians if i was still pleasing men i wouldn't not be preaching uh pleasing god you can't do both
27:55the lord jesus said himself beware the time to be concerned is when everybody speaks well of you
28:03says what a great guy you are or what a great woman you are
28:07in in respect to spiritual things in the gospel no he says they're going to turn away from listening
28:14to the truth but as for you always be sober-minded endure suffering do the work of an evangelist
28:21fulfill your ministry paul goes on of course to say we didn't read this far he knew that he was
28:30about to die any day nero's edict would come and he'd be killed he says i'm already being poured out
28:39as a drink offering and the time of my departure has come i've fought the good fight i've finished the
28:45grace i've kept the faith oh how how i hope that can be said of me i can say that when the time of
28:54my departure comes i'm sure that all of us who know the lord want that to be the case will it be
29:03the challenge for each one of us whether we're here wherever we're listening and watching this
29:08around the world the challenge is this is the mark this is the standard for all believers paul often
29:15could say imitate me as i imitate christ this word is for all of us and then paul could say henceforth
29:25there's laid up for me the crown of righteousness which the lord the righteous judge will award to me
29:30on that day and not only to me paul's not saying don't put me on a it's not saying put me on a
29:36pedestal it's to all who have loved his appearing all who love the lord jesus and long to see him
29:44long to be with him which we're going to be for eternity many of us and many of you in here and many
29:53of you watching on whatever tablet or device you're using will be suffering will be troubled many
30:02have financial problems many health problems many worries and concerns about family about children
30:09about the way various societies are going and in many cases for persecution for the gospel
30:17but what paul's saying he's saying i'm longing for i'm he said to the philippians when he didn't know
30:27whether he was going to be released on his second imprisonment his first one in rome under house arrest
30:33he said i don't know whether i'm going to be free it's better for you if i am but i long to be with
30:41christ for me it's better to to go to be with christ but he could say for me to live is christ
30:51because then to die is gain we have to fix our eyes on jesus look what he suffers for us and we can't
31:01begin to enter into it what he gave up for us and what it cost him the hymn writer says oh make me
31:09understand it help me to take it in what it meant for thee the holy one to bear away my sin
31:18fix your eyes on jesus he's a forerunner he's the author and the forerunner of our faith
31:26keep your eyes heavenward our hope is in him our time is gone christine did read briefly one of my
31:33favorite passages from the beginning of 2 corinthians um chapter 4 and there paul emphasizes
31:40again that um he recognizes god's commissioned him and given him uh given him a message and he says
31:49we don't tamper with your god's word we don't practice deceit underhanded ways we don't practice
31:57cunning we don't try and con people we don't try and get people under false pretenses but by the
32:04plain statement of the truth we commend ourselves to you recognizing that if people don't get it
32:13it's because the devil god of this world has blinded their eyes but we preach not ourselves
32:22but cry jesus christ as lord with ourselves as literally your do-law your bond slaves for jesus
32:28sake for it is the god who commanded light to shine out of darkness who has shone in our hearts
32:37to have the knowledge of the glory of god in the face of christ that's what this little chapel has
32:44stood for in this building for 140 years may the lord be gracious and may it continue until he come
32:51that he will raise up people and that they will see this village and this greater area
32:58folk coming to know the lord through this witness and those of you who are watching this wherever you're
33:04watching it wherever in the world that's my prayer for you that you will be faithful that you will be
33:12strengthened that you will stand firm on the word of god that you'll be prepared if necessary to suffer
33:18for christ to suffer for the word of god and that he will use you to be witnesses that you will be
33:27influential in the extension of the kingdom not for your glory not for your praise and adoration
33:33by anybody but for his god bless you all
