Internationally acclaimed speaker and author David Duffett preaches on the time when God chose a King to replace Saul. Samuel was sent to anoint this new King, but was shocked by God's choice, which, in human terms, appeared poor.

00:00Oh, and be discerning, is most holy learning, Lord, may love and fear Thee, evermore be near Thee.
00:22Well, it's great to be here, and a privilege to come and speak to you this evening.
00:28And not so long ago, I had the privilege of speaking about the first chapter of Ruth.
00:35I don't know whether we're allowed to have favourite books of the Bible, but I think if we were, Ruth
00:40would be mine.
00:41You know, that story of love and loyalty, of divine providence, such a beautiful story.
00:48Well, not a story, an account in the book of Ruth.
00:51And what I'd like to do this evening is kind of follow along from that and have a quick look
00:58at the life of David.
01:00Because, of course, Ruth is, you know, back in the lineage of David.
01:03And, of course, this also comes into the lineage of our Lord Jesus Christ as well, doesn't it?
01:08So I'd like to draw your attention to 1 Samuel, and we're going to look at chapter 16, and we're
01:18just going to read the first 13 verses.
01:49And the Lord said unto Samuel,
01:50And the Lord said, Take an heifer with thee, and say, I am come to sacrifice to the Lord.
01:58And call Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show thee what thou shalt do.
02:03And thou shalt anoint unto me him whom I name unto thee.
02:08And Samuel did that which the Lord spake, and came to Bethlehem.
02:14And the elders of the town trembled at his coming, and said, Comest thou peaceably?
02:20And he said, Peaceably.
02:22I am come to sacrifice unto the Lord.
02:25Sanctify yourselves, and come with me to the sacrifice.
02:30And they sanctified Jesse and his sons, and called them to the sacrifice.
02:37And it came to pass, when they were come, that he looked on Eliab, and said, Surely the Lord's anointed
02:44is before me.
02:44But the Lord said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature, because I
02:54have refused him.
02:55For the Lord seeth not as man seeth.
02:59For man looketh on the outward appearance, but the Lord looketh on the heart.
03:05Then Jesse called Abinadab, and made him pass before Samuel.
03:11And he said, Neither hath the Lord chosen this.
03:14Then Jesse made Shammah to pass by.
03:17And he said, Neither hath the Lord chosen this.
03:20Again, Jesse made seven of his sons to pass before Samuel.
03:25And Samuel said unto Jesse, The Lord hath not chosen these.
03:28And Samuel said unto Jesse, Are here all thy children?
03:32And he said, There remaineth yet the youngest, and behold, he keepeth the sheep.
03:40And Samuel said unto Jesse, Send and fetch him, for we will not sit down till he come hither.
03:48And he sent, and he brought him in.
03:51Now he was ruddy, and withal of a beautiful countenance, and goodly to look to.
03:57And the Lord said, Arise, anoint him, for this is he.
04:01Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren.
04:07And the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward.
04:13So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.
04:16I'd like to use a title, it's a very, very obvious title for that passage.
04:20And it's God chooses David as a king.
04:23You know, if you were trying to pick the main thing that happens in that passage, that would be it,
04:28wouldn't it?
04:28There's other things that happen, but the outcome of it is that God, through Samuel, anoints David to be king.
04:37And what I'd like to do is pick out three aspects of this passage that I believe can be of
04:43help to us in our Christian walk to consider them.
04:47And the three headings, if you like, are divine direction, divine decision, and divine duty.
04:57So those are what we are going to look at.
05:00So under the heading of divine direction here, from the very outset of this passage, we see that Samuel is
05:06hearing directly from the Lord.
05:09Initially, to move his thinking on from Saul, because the Lord perceived that he was still somehow wedded to Saul,
05:16even though we read in previous passage that Saul's incomplete obedience have led the Lord to reject him as the
05:25king of Israel.
05:26And what the Lord wanted to do is move his thinking on from Saul, and then to direct him to
05:32Bethlehem and to the family of Jesse.
05:36Now, we read that Samuel is hearing directly from God.
05:40And so the first question is, how do we hear from God?
05:45Do we hear directly like that?
05:48Well, maybe we do.
05:49God's quite capable of speaking to us.
05:51However, perhaps these days, we don't hear so much of that, even though God is well capable of it.
06:00It's entirely possible.
06:02But the Lord, of course, has given us the Bible.
06:04So our number one place to learn what God is saying to us is, of course, the Bible.
06:10And I specifically mention that first ahead of prayer,
06:15because through our own reading and study and hearing others expound,
06:21and, of course, using our own spiritual gift of discernment as we read through the Bible,
06:26we can definitely hear directly from the Lord through his word.
06:30The reason I mention it ahead of prayer is because although prayer is critical,
06:37the Bible is the authoritative word of God.
06:40And so, where the Bible is clear, we don't need to seek answers in prayer.
06:46You know, we wouldn't seek answers in prayer.
06:48We wouldn't say, Lord, would it be okay for me to murder this person?
06:51Just to use a terrible example, because it's clearly down in the Bible.
06:55Thou shalt not murder.
06:56So what I'm saying is we come to the Bible first.
06:58And, of course, we can pray about things and look for the Lord's leading.
07:01But there are plenty of places where it's absolutely clear.
07:07And I once heard the American motivational speaker, Zig Ziglar, who was also a Christian.
07:13He said, people come to him and say, I don't understand the Bible.
07:17He said, the trouble is you don't like the bits you do understand.
07:20That was his response.
07:22Another one that made me laugh is when people would say,
07:25yeah, your church is just full of hypocrites.
07:27He'd say, well, we've got room for one more.
07:30Come along.
07:31So, yes, the Bible and prayer are our number one and number two ways that we hear from the Lord.
07:39But, of course, he can speak directly to us.
07:41And we have instances where people say, I felt the Lord saying this to me directly.
07:47We do need, though, to talk to God in prayer, just as one would with anyone that we have a
07:54close relationship.
07:55But one of the things that defines a close relationship is communication, isn't it?
07:58You know, if a husband and wife stop communicating, that's possibly the beginning of something difficult to deal with.
08:05And so we need to be communicating all the time.
08:09And we look for that close relationship.
08:12We read in Scripture that if we draw near to God, he will draw near to us.
08:17And so we can have that beautiful relationship with our Abba father, our daddy, if you like.
08:23I want to draw your attention, first of all, to verse one, where God says to Samuel,
08:34I will send thee to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided me a king among his sons.
08:42I have provided me a king among his sons.
08:47Does that remind you of any other verses in Scripture?
08:51I have provided me a king.
08:57Any other verses coming to mind?
08:59There's only a few of us, so feel free to shout out if you'd like to.
09:03The one that came straight to my mind was,
09:07my son, God will provide himself a lamb.
09:12Do you remember when Isaac asked his dad,
09:14yeah, but where's the sacrifice?
09:19And the dad said, I've forgotten the name of the dad now.
09:22Who was the dad?
09:23Sorry?
09:24Abraham.
09:24Abraham, that's right.
09:25Abraham said, my son, God will provide himself a lamb.
09:28And here we read, I have provided me a king among the sons of Jesse.
09:34Both these verses and many other verses that we could turn to in Scripture
09:38speak of God's sovereign provision.
09:40And I'm sure as we look back over our lives, we can see God's hand of provision.
09:45Even though we might not have recognised it at the time,
09:48when we look back, we can see how God has saved us from doing something
09:51that we perhaps shouldn't have done.
09:54Or enabled us to do something that we didn't think was possible.
09:57You know, God's hand of provision has been there for us.
10:01And in this case, God had now rejected Saul,
10:04whom Israel had been looking to.
10:06And actually, Israel continues to look to as we read further forward
10:10in this book of 1 Samuel,
10:12because Israel doesn't know that God has finished with Saul.
10:17They're not privy to that at the moment.
10:20But God's purposes would still be accomplished.
10:23And I think an important thing to note here
10:25is that God is not tied to the people that he chooses to use for a season.
10:32So he did use Saul.
10:33In fact, you know, it was through God's will that Saul became king for that time.
10:38However, he then finished with him.
10:40And actually, when I think about chapels like this and the one at Quainton,
10:44God has chosen to use different people over time, haven't they?
10:46Different people come and go.
10:49In Quainton recently, we had the sad loss of Joyce,
10:53the oldest surviving member.
10:55She went to be with the Lord a few weeks ago.
10:58But she had been a stalwart supporter of the chapel.
11:01She had run the Sunday school, I believe, when there were 50-odd children.
11:06Part of her work, her and her husband ran a soft furnishing business
11:12where they do curtains for railway stations and National Trust properties
11:16and for the chapel.
11:17She'd done everything in the chapel.
11:19Everywhere you look, there's something to remind you of what Joyce had done.
11:22She was a really stalwart supporter.
11:23We pray for her husband, David, who to this day is not saved.
11:27But yet he would be over at the chapel painting,
11:30you know, taking doors off their hinges and planing them down.
11:34Did no end of different things.
11:36He himself turns 80 very soon.
11:39But God uses these people for a season.
11:42And they get a blessing from that
11:44because they're doing what God's will is for their lives.
11:46But God is not tied to any one person.
11:48Remember that hymn, God is working his purposes out
11:51or God is working his purpose out as year succeeds to year.
11:55God is working his purpose out and the time is drawing near.
11:59God uses people as he sees fit.
12:01Some of them are saved.
12:03He can use people that are not saved.
12:05He can use donkeys, can we?
12:06We read about that or asses, I should say.
12:09His purposes will always be worked out and accomplished.
12:12He will see to it.
12:14So for as long as the Lord wants Chartridge to keep going,
12:17he will bring the next people along, won't he?
12:19It's in his divine providence to do so.
12:22Even though we're sad that we haven't got Pastor Barry with us
12:24and we pray for his safe return soon and other people,
12:28God has got these things in hand.
12:31And we feel the same at Quainton as well.
12:33You know, sometimes we worry ourselves, don't we,
12:35with small numbers and things like that.
12:37But yet, if God wants it done, it will get done.
12:41He's working his purposes out.
12:43So we need to look to the Lord.
12:44And, of course, this is also not only applicable in our church life,
12:48but in our own everyday lives as well.
12:50We need to look to the Lord.
12:51And sadly, you know, confessing in my own life,
12:55when problems arise, I very want to try and sort things out myself
12:59rather than come first to the foot of the cross.
13:03And, of course, that's what we should be doing, isn't it?
13:05When problems arise, we don't want to go and see the Lord last
13:08after we've tried everything else.
13:09I want to go to the Lord first in these things
13:13and be aligned with his purposes.
13:15And, of course, the more we read his word and the more we pray,
13:19the more we will be aligned with his purposes.
13:22So that's what we need to do.
13:25Now, in verse 2, Samuel has a bit of a Moses moment, doesn't he?
13:29Do you remember when Moses was called upon to lead the children of Israel out?
13:34And he said, yeah, but I haven't got a good tongue.
13:36I'm not very good at this.
13:37And he sort of made excuses.
13:38In verse 2 here, Samuel said, how can I go?
13:42If Saul hears about it, he'll kill me.
13:44So, you know, God has told him what to do
13:47and he's busy, you know, asking questions about it.
13:51And the point is that the Lord makes a way for us.
13:54And so if we are doing God's will in our own lives,
13:58a way will be made to move forwards.
14:01But in this case, he directs Samuel to talk about a sacrifice.
14:04And he says, go over there, take a heifer with you
14:06and say that you're going to do a sacrifice.
14:10And I'll show you what to do, Samuel, when you get there.
14:13And so Samuel relies on the Lord for that.
14:16And of course, the Lord delivers, doesn't he?
14:18He ultimately tells him who to anoint.
14:21So that was good enough for Samuel to take action.
14:23And he does make his way to Bethlehem.
14:26And then the elders in verse 4, we read,
14:29they want to know, do you come peaceably?
14:30Why would they say that to Samuel, God's prophet?
14:34Why would they say, do you come peaceably?
14:37It's a few verses back, isn't it?
14:40He'd recently hacked Agag to bit suddenly.
14:44Do you remember when Saul didn't kill him,
14:46the king of the Amalekites?
14:48And so Samuel showed up and said,
14:49look, you've not done what God told you to do.
14:53And do you remember Saul's excuse?
14:55Well, I've done my sacrifices.
14:57In other words, I've done the legal bit of it.
14:59And Samuel has to remind Saul
15:01that God's looking for obedience.
15:04That's more important than sacrifices.
15:07And then he goes on to say,
15:08well, disobedience is as, you know,
15:10rebellion against God is as the sin of witchcraft,
15:13which I always think is very interesting
15:15because, of course, later on,
15:16Saul's going to consult a witch, isn't he?
15:18And so it's amazing how all of these things fit together.
15:22But if the bloke that you knew
15:24had recently hacked somebody to bits,
15:26showed up, you'd probably say,
15:28hold on a minute, do you come in peace?
15:30And Samuel says, well, he does come in peace.
15:36So he answers that he's come peaceably.
15:39And being a peace offering with a sacrifice,
15:41the implication, he says he's there to sacrifice,
15:44and it looks like it's a peace offering.
15:46The implication is that it would involve a meal.
15:49That's eating up the meat of the sacrifice
15:52as opposed to a sin offering.
15:55So it's a peace offering there.
15:57So the scene is set for Samuel
16:00to slide into this situation,
16:01going under the radar
16:03as far as Saul's suspicions are concerned,
16:06and talking to the family of Jesse.
16:08So that's just a brief look at the divine direction.
16:12Now let's look at the divine decision.
16:16So even having followed that divine direction
16:19to Bethlehem and to Jesse's family,
16:22Samuel then falls instantly into the trap
16:26of acting in the flesh,
16:27because he sees the first son, Eliab,
16:30and Eliab's probably a big, strong man,
16:32looking pretty good, looking quite handy.
16:34And he thinks, oh, this is obviously the man
16:36that God wants.
16:38But it's not, is it?
16:40God has to remind him that his selection,
16:43that's God's selection criteria,
16:45are quite different to man's.
16:48He does that in verse 7.
16:50And of course, this is something
16:51that we should very much keep in mind as well, isn't it?
16:55That God looks at the heart,
16:57and God has appointments for people.
16:59Just to use a very simple example,
17:01if a new person arrived and they happen
17:03to be an accountant,
17:05we should not assume that they're going
17:07to be the treasurer of the chapel, should we?
17:09Because God doesn't look at that stuff.
17:11God looks at the heart, and he has his appointment.
17:14We have to work within God's parameters,
17:17not our own human understanding of things.
17:21So let me ask you this.
17:23Who, when, where, and how
17:28will God choose to deal with things for us?
17:32That's a question, or those are questions
17:34that we should be asking ourselves.
17:37There's a lovely man who's now gone to be with the Lord,
17:40Pastor Bill, I've forgotten his surname for a minute now,
17:43but big, big man from America.
17:45Bill Randalls, that's right.
17:47Pastor Bill Randalls, lovely big man.
17:49When anything bad would happen to him,
17:52he'd say, oh, I wonder how the Lord's going to handle this.
17:55That was his first thought,
17:56or at least his first verbalised thought.
17:59And isn't it, well, isn't that a lovely thing?
18:01That's what we should be doing, isn't it?
18:03When terrible things happen to us,
18:04we shouldn't, you know, we shouldn't be with Isaiah,
18:07woe is me-ing.
18:08We should be saying, oh, I wonder how the Lord
18:10is going to deal with this.
18:12And of course, the more we're in his word,
18:14the more we're in prayer,
18:15the more connected and communicated with,
18:18we are with him,
18:19the more we'll be able to give him those things
18:21and understand that.
18:24So, of course, at the same time, though,
18:26that doesn't mean that we should just sit back
18:28with our arms folded and let God deal with it.
18:31You know, there is work for us to do.
18:34Do you remember the scripture where it says,
18:35be ye holy, even as I am holy.
18:38In other words, there is stuff for us to do.
18:41And just to use another simple example,
18:44if you were looking for a job
18:45and praying about your next job,
18:47then you really should fill out some application forms
18:50and go for some interviews.
18:51You know, not just sit back and say,
18:53Lord, I'm praying for my next job.
18:54Now, of course, it's entirely possible
18:56for the Lord to work everything out for you.
19:00However, we do have to do some of these things ourselves.
19:04I read, or when I say I read,
19:06I use that term loosely.
19:07I'm not one of the world's greatest readers.
19:09But there's a guy called Samuel Leeds
19:11who claims to be a Christian property investor.
19:14It's worth millions.
19:16And he wrote a book called
19:18You Do the Possible and Let God Do the Impossible.
19:21In other words, you do the bits you can
19:24and then God will, you know,
19:25he'll fill in the impossible gaps.
19:27And yeah, and I think there's something in that.
19:29Not that I follow all of Samuel Leeds teaching,
19:32but I do believe that God wants us to do our part.
19:36So we need to take action,
19:38but we need to take those actions prayerfully
19:40and carefully while seeking to discern God's will for us
19:45in each and every situation.
19:48Jesse's sons are brought before Samuel in man's order,
19:51oldest through to the youngest.
19:53And yet the Lord had chosen the youngest,
19:57even though the oldest came first.
19:58It reminds me of the other scripture
20:00where the first shall be last
20:01and the last shall be first.
20:04Again, we need to keep a check on ourselves
20:07that we look to the Lord
20:08and not go first in the flesh.
20:13Because that is the danger.
20:15The danger is we see something
20:16that's obviously right in the flesh,
20:18jump in when the Lord might have had different ideas for us.
20:22So we need to consult with the Lord first.
20:25So we've done the divine direction
20:30and the divine decision.
20:32We've just got one part left to look at,
20:35which is the divine duty.
20:38So after Jesse has cycled through all of his sons,
20:42apart from the very youngest one
20:44that he didn't really consider was applicable to Samuel,
20:47Samuel inquires and said,
20:48well, have you got any more children?
20:50Because the Lord had not yet chosen one.
20:53So Samuel perhaps knew the answer to that question
20:55because he'd already said,
20:57the Lord had already said,
20:58Samuel, I'm going to anoint somebody
20:59from the sons of Jesse.
21:01So if he's seen all of his sons
21:02and not found the one,
21:05you know, it's a little bit like Abraham's believing
21:07that even though he was called upon to kill Isaac,
21:12God had already promised
21:14that all of his descendants would come through him,
21:17hadn't he?
21:17The son of promise.
21:18And so Abraham was obedient
21:21because he counted,
21:22in fact, we read it in Hebrews 11,
21:24don't we?
21:24Often referred to as the hall of faith
21:26that God counted it unto him for righteousness,
21:28that he believed God about that.
21:31And so here,
21:32this is an example of Samuel believing
21:34and saying,
21:35well, have you got any other sons?
21:37And Jesse goes on to tell him
21:39that yes, there is one more.
21:42He's not here at the moment
21:43because he's keeping the sheep.
21:46And isn't that highly appropriate
21:47if we think of David as a type of Christ,
21:51as we can in some ways,
21:52he's keeping the sheep.
21:55Look how Samuel reacts.
21:56He says, well, go and get him.
21:58Get him quick.
21:59In fact, we will not sit down
22:01until he comes here.
22:03Again, that reminds us, doesn't it,
22:05of another passage of Scripture.
22:06Do you remember when Abraham sent out his servant,
22:10I believe his name was Eliezer,
22:11to go looking for a wife for Isaac.
22:14And Eliezer gets over there, doesn't he?
22:15Explains his mission.
22:18And in fact,
22:19he's offered food and hospitality.
22:21But he said, no,
22:22won't take any of it
22:23until I've told you what's going on.
22:25I will not eat until.
22:27And in here, Samuel says,
22:30we will not sit down until he comes here.
22:32They were both servants of the Lord
22:33who took their duties very seriously.
22:37There's a question for us, isn't there?
22:39How seriously do we take the duties
22:42that the Lord gives us?
22:44Because we do have our own free will, don't we?
22:46We can paddle our own canoe
22:48and go off and do our own thing.
22:50And sometimes we choose to do that thing instead
22:52of what the Lord has given us to do.
22:57Putting everything else to one side,
23:01like eating and sitting,
23:04until we do our duty.
23:06Is that us?
23:06You know, when we feel the Lord
23:08has put something, a burden on our heart,
23:11is it our number one priority
23:12before we do anything else?
23:14Or in my case,
23:16do I think, I'll just check this on my phone?
23:18And before too long,
23:19you've been on your phone
23:20for like 25 minutes or something
23:22and been very distracted.
23:24It's very easy to do, isn't it?
23:25It might not be a phone.
23:26It might be something else.
23:27But we can be distracted from these things.
23:29Anyway, verse 12,
23:31drawing to a close here.
23:32Verse 12,
23:33David arrives
23:34and Samuel is instantly told,
23:40in verse 12,
23:41arise, anoint him,
23:42for this is he.
23:44Even though he's the youngest one,
23:47he's a ruddy appearance
23:50and a goodly countenance.
23:53So he really doesn't look like
23:56the warrior type
23:57that maybe Samuel had been anticipating.
24:01But being guided by the Lord,
24:03he does deliver on his duty
24:05and he anoints David
24:07in front of all of his brothers.
24:09All of his brothers.
24:11And we read in that passage,
24:15let's just have a quick look.
24:18There it is in verse 13.
24:21And Samuel took the horn of oil
24:23and anointed him
24:24in the midst of all his brethren.
24:25So it's very public as far,
24:27it was private,
24:27but it's very public
24:28as far as his brethren were concerned.
24:30They could see what was happening.
24:32And look what happens next.
24:34And it says,
24:34and the spirit of the Lord
24:35came upon David
24:37from that day forward.
24:39Now that's quite an incredible thing
24:41that we read there
24:43because I'm sure we're familiar
24:44with other parts of David's life.
24:46I don't think we ever read
24:48that the Lord took his spirit
24:49away from David
24:50and yet he managed
24:51to murder a few people,
24:53commit adultery,
24:55all sorts of things
24:56that he got up to it.
24:57And he's a man
24:58after God's own heart.
24:59And so I think
25:00what we can take from this
25:02in our own humanity
25:03is we probably know
25:05we've been up to no good
25:06at some stage,
25:07but the Lord can forgive us of that,
25:09even if it's very recent
25:10or maybe it's an old sin
25:12that we've not brought before the Lord,
25:14that God is faithful
25:15and just to forgive us
25:17our sins, isn't he?
25:17And so if there's anything
25:19on our hearts and minds
25:20that might be keeping us
25:22from serving the Lord,
25:23we read that if we regard
25:25iniquity in our hearts,
25:26we won't hear our prayers.
25:28So if there are things,
25:29then we can bring those.
25:30We can keep,
25:31what we're really instructed to do
25:32is to keep short accounts
25:34with God, isn't it?
25:35To bring these things before him.
25:38And yes, I find it fascinating.
25:40I mean, we read actively
25:41that the Lord not only
25:43took his spirit away from Saul,
25:45he even sent an evil spirit
25:46to him, didn't we?
25:47Didn't he?
25:48But we don't read that about David.
25:50David had the Holy Spirit,
25:52God's spirit with him
25:53from that day forth,
25:54even though we read
25:55of some of the other things
25:57that went on.
25:58And in fact,
25:59let's just sneak into the next passage
26:01just for one verse.
26:03But the spirit of the Lord
26:04departed from Saul
26:06and an evil spirit
26:08troubled him.
26:09An evil spirit
26:10from the Lord
26:11troubled him.
26:13That's verse 14.
26:15And then at the end
26:16of verse 13,
26:18we read that Samuel
26:20went to Ramah.
26:21That's the way this
26:22part of the passage closes.
26:24So as we close this,
26:27look at the initial part
26:29of the Bible's coverage
26:32of David,
26:33where he is chosen
26:34as king.
26:35And of course,
26:36there's lots of other things,
26:37isn't there?
26:37There's the battle
26:38with Goliath.
26:39There's the different times
26:43with Saul
26:44when Saul tries to kill him.
26:46There's David's divine mercy
26:48to Saul.
26:49There's David who goes
26:51and allies himself
26:52with King Achish of Gath,
26:54the same place
26:54that Goliath came from.
26:55There's all sorts of things
26:56that we can read about David.
26:58But this is the first part.
27:00He's chosen as king
27:02and we should be taking
27:04our example at this point
27:05from Samuel.
27:07Not in the sort of looking
27:08as man looks,
27:09but in the other parts
27:10that he did what he was told
27:12to do by God.
27:13He fulfilled the duty
27:14that he was given.
27:16So are we,
27:17A,
27:18looking to the Lord
27:19for his direction
27:21in our lives?
27:24That's the divine direction.
27:27Are we,
27:28B,
27:29trusting
27:30the Lord's divine decision?
27:33So when we go to the Lord
27:35and ask about something
27:36and we feel we've got an answer,
27:37do we trust it
27:38or do we think,
27:39oh, I was really hoping
27:40to hear this other thing?
27:42We need to trust
27:43the Lord's divine decision
27:44and C,
27:46are we determined
27:47in our own lives
27:48to deliver
27:50on God's divine duty
27:53for us?
27:54Amen.
27:54For thy word abideth
28:00and our footsteps guideth
28:05who with truth believeth
28:09light and joy receiveth
28:15who can tell the pleasure
28:20who recant the treasure
28:25by the Lord imparted
28:31to the simple-hearted.
28:36when the storms are o'er us
28:42and our clouds before us,
28:47then it's life directed
28:51and our way protecteth.
28:57when our foes are near us
29:03when thy word doth cheer us
29:08word of consolation
29:13message of salvation
29:18word of blessing
29:22word of blessing
29:24succour to the living
29:29word of life supplying
29:34comfort to the dying
29:40O that may descend
29:45O that may descending
29:47is most holy learning
29:51Lord, may love and fear Thee
29:57evermore beneath Thee
