Peter Evans brings us a compelling end-times sermon based on the Watchman mentioned in the Bible. Peter focuses on the modern-day need for faithful watchmen to warn of the dangers of the end times. Exploring the darkness of days past and present, Peter analyses the capabilities that a watchman needs to warn others of the need for salvation found only in Christ Jesus.

00:00When end life's transiting, when death's cold side stream, shall o'er meet all?
00:12Bless, Saviour, then in love, fear and distrust remove.
00:20Open ye, Saviour, by her ransomed soul.
00:26Well, welcome to our meeting tonight at Charteridge in the name of the Lord Jesus.
00:32We'll start with some words from Psalm number 145 as a call to worship and just a reminder of just
00:40how good and how great our God is.
00:43I will extol you, O my God, O King. I will bless your name forever.
00:50Every day I will bless you and I will praise your name forever and ever.
00:56Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised, and his greatness is unsearchable.
01:04One generation shall praise your works to another and declare your mighty acts.
01:11I will meditate on your glorious splendour and your majesty, and in your wondrous works.
01:19Men will speak of your might and your awesome acts, and I will declare your greatness.
01:27They shall utter the memory of your great goodness, and I shall sing of your righteousness.
01:35The Lord is gracious and full of compassion, slow to anger, and great in mercy.
01:43The Lord is good to all, and his tender mercies are over all his works.
01:50Starting to read at verse 1.
01:53Again the word of the Lord came to me, saying,
01:57Son of man, speak to the children of your people, and say to them,
02:04When I bring the sword upon this land, and the people of the land take a man from their territory,
02:10and they make him their watchman,
02:13When he sees the sword coming upon the land,
02:17If he blows the trumpet and warns the people,
02:21Then whoever hears the sound of the trumpet,
02:24And does not take him away,
02:26His blood shall be upon his own head.
02:30He heard the sound of the trumpet,
02:33But he did not take the warning,
02:36His blood shall be upon himself.
02:39But he who takes the warning will save his life.
02:44But if the watchman sees the sword coming,
02:47And does not blow the trumpet,
02:49And the people are not warned,
02:52And the sword comes and takes away any person from amongst them,
02:56He has taken away his iniquity,
02:59But his blood shall be required of the watchman's hand.
03:04So you, O son of man,
03:06I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel.
03:11Therefore you shall hear the word from my mouth,
03:13And warn them for me.
03:16When I say to the wicked,
03:19O wicked man,
03:20You shall surely die,
03:22And you do not speak a warning to the wicked from his way.
03:26That wicked man shall die in his iniquity,
03:29But his blood will be required at your hand.
03:34Nevertheless,
03:35You warn the wicked to turn away,
03:38And he does not hear,
03:40He does not turn from his way.
03:43He shall die in his iniquity,
03:46But you have delivered your soul.
03:49Therefore you, O son of man,
03:52Say to the house of Israel,
03:55Thus you say,
03:56If our transgressions and our sins lie upon us,
04:02And we pine away in them,
04:04How can we then live?
04:07Say to them,
04:08As I live, says the Lord God,
04:10I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked,
04:13But that the wicked turn away from his way and live,
04:18Turn from your evil ways.
04:20Why should you die, O house of Israel?
04:23If we turn now to Isaiah chapter 21,
04:29We'll just read in verses 11 and 12,
04:33The burden against Juma,
04:35He who calls out to me of Seir,
04:38Watchman, what of the night?
04:41Watchman, what of the night?
04:44And the watchman said,
04:46The morning comes, but also the night.
04:50If you will inquire, inquire.
04:53Return, come back.
04:57Well, the parable of the watchman and Ezekiel,
05:01Or certainly its message,
05:02Is, I would imagine, quite familiar to us.
05:05I find it uncomfortable reading.
05:08I'm not an evangelist,
05:10And most of you are far more qualified
05:11To speak on it than I am.
05:14But it is a message that remains as ever
05:19Relevant to us at the moment,
05:22And throughout all time.
05:24But I'd like to take it in more,
05:27In the context of this little bit from Isaiah.
05:33Because here,
05:35The people of Edom,
05:36Who were no friends of Israel,
05:39No friends of the Jewish people,
05:42Have cried out,
05:43And certainly that,
05:44Whether they've actually gone to Isaiah,
05:46Or Isaiah has heard that cry.
05:50And he,
05:51He has this word for them.
05:56The darkness,
05:58The night that they face,
06:00We think is the Assyrian
06:02Captivity,
06:03The Assyrian
06:06Invasion of that,
06:07Of their land.
06:09The morning,
06:10The brief morning,
06:11Is the gap between that,
06:13And the Babylonian conquest,
06:15That followed it,
06:16Which of course was worse.
06:18So that's the second night.
06:20They're crying out,
06:21When is this oppression,
06:23When is this violence,
06:24Going to end?
06:26So people,
06:28Who have no,
06:31No love,
06:32Of the,
06:33Of Isaiah's people,
06:35Have actually gone to him,
06:37And have requested,
06:38And said,
06:38Watchman,
06:39Can you make sense of this?
06:42Which is,
06:43Perhaps,
06:46More than,
06:47The role of the watchman,
06:49That we see in Ezekiel,
06:50Where the watchman,
06:51Just has to go to the people.
06:53Here,
06:54The people have come,
06:55To the watchman.
06:57And,
06:58Of course,
06:58The message ultimately,
06:59Remains the same.
07:01Return,
07:02Repent,
07:03Of your sin,
07:04Come back to God.
07:06Well,
07:07We'll think about,
07:08The bit,
07:09Isaiah,
07:11In a moment.
07:13But,
07:14We'll go back to,
07:15To Ezekiel first of all,
07:16And just remind ourselves,
07:18Of the basic,
07:19What a watchman is,
07:20And what our role is.
07:22But in our time,
07:26Although there's a,
07:27In the mainstream media,
07:30In perhaps society,
07:31Generally,
07:32There's a complete denial of God,
07:35A complete atheism,
07:37There's a sense of,
07:39There's a sense of,
07:39Escapism,
07:41Hedonism,
07:42And just,
07:43A trivia.
07:46But,
07:47Beyond that,
07:49Many thinking people,
07:50Are asking that question.
07:52Watchman,
07:53What of the night?
07:55Why is the world,
07:57So wicked?
07:58Why are these things,
08:00Going on?
08:02And to every,
08:03Probably,
08:04Many of us,
08:05Will have,
08:06Just that comment,
08:07Given to us.
08:08People who are not,
08:10Have no love of the Lord,
08:11But will make remarks,
08:13Which open up a conversation.
08:16Maybe just when we're,
08:17Next to them in a queue somewhere,
08:19Or just passing.
08:22And say,
08:23How do you feel about this?
08:25I'm so,
08:26Or I'm so afraid,
08:27I'm so worried.
08:29Those sort of comments,
08:31Come out.
08:33But also,
08:34We do have signs,
08:35Like what we're calling,
08:36The quiet revival,
08:37Where there appears to be,
08:39Quite a number of young people,
08:40Particularly young men,
08:42Who are,
08:42Are actively seeking,
08:44And even turning to the church,
08:46At this time.
08:49So that question,
08:50Which has been asked,
08:51Down the ages,
08:52Is still as poignant today.
08:55Watchman,
08:56What of the night?
08:57Why is this happening?
08:59Anyway,
09:00Let's go to,
09:01Ezekiel first of all,
09:05And I think of perhaps,
09:07The basics,
09:08Of what it means,
09:09To be a watchman.
09:11Well first of all,
09:13The watchman has a great,
09:14Position of responsibility,
09:16Position of responsibility,
09:17And trust.
09:18The safety of the people,
09:21Is invested in him.
09:25It's a,
09:26A great responsibility,
09:29To carry.
09:33The believer,
09:35Even if you might not,
09:37Be called to be an evangelist,
09:38Or a prophet,
09:39Is always a witness.
09:42The Lord has commanded us,
09:44To watch,
09:44And to pray,
09:45And to be vigilant,
09:47And to share the gospel,
09:49With,
09:49With those around us.
09:53We carry that trust,
09:56That responsibility,
09:57From the Lord.
10:00We will account for him,
10:02To how we used our time,
10:04And what we did,
10:05In those circumstances.
10:08So it's a position,
10:09Of great responsibility.
10:12The watchman has a viewpoint,
10:15He has an elevated position,
10:18Normally it would be a tower,
10:20In this sort of circumstance,
10:23On the city walls,
10:25There would be a,
10:25There would be high point,
10:27There would be watch towers,
10:29And the watchman is looking out,
10:31Or he is far higher,
10:34Than those on the ground,
10:36But he is focused outwards,
10:38He is focused on the distance,
10:42He is looking out,
10:43From an elevated viewpoint,
10:46A view that,
10:47He has a view,
10:48That others don't have.
10:50And for the,
10:51It's limited,
10:52It's not a satellite view,
10:55But it's further than those around him,
10:57Can see.
11:00The believer,
11:28The believer,
11:31In a way that those around,
11:33Those unsaved,
11:34Do not have.
11:37It may,
11:38Our knowledge,
11:39May be very limited,
11:41But it is far,
11:43Far greater,
11:44Than that of the unbeliever.
11:47And we can see,
11:48The need of salvation,
11:50We can see the danger,
11:51Far off,
11:52That others are,
11:53Are in denial of.
11:57They do not know,
11:58They do not know,
11:58Where their lives are headed,
11:59Or where they are going.
12:01And we can see,
12:03And know,
12:05What their ultimate end is.
12:09The watchman,
12:11The watchman requires stamina,
12:13Those long,
12:15Lonely watches of the night,
12:19The need for concentration,
12:23The need to overcome boredom,
12:26The need to remain alert,
12:29To remain vigilant,
12:31When nothing appears to be happening.
12:35The watchman needs stamina.
12:39The believer,
12:40Say needs stamina,
12:41We would probably call it faithfulness,
12:43Is a better word.
12:46The ability to keep going.
12:50The ability to overcome,
12:55Disillusionment,
12:57Difficulties,
12:59The ability to keep,
13:03Focused,
13:04On the Lord's things,
13:06To keep focused,
13:08On our,
13:09His calling upon our lives,
13:12Amid all the other pressures.
13:15So much of the New Testament,
13:17Is really encouragement,
13:18To do that,
13:20Much in the letters,
13:22Is really that sense,
13:23Where those,
13:24Those young,
13:25Early Christians,
13:26Were facing persecution,
13:27Facing all sorts of difficulties,
13:29So much encouragement,
13:31Is to keep faithful,
13:32To keep focused,
13:34On the Lord,
13:36And on His calling upon our lives.
13:38The watchman,
13:40Requires stamina,
13:42The watchman,
13:45Require,
13:46Has an urgent message,
13:49When he sees danger,
13:51He has to respond,
13:53Immediately,
13:54Or those lives,
13:56Or those lives,
13:56Could be saved,
13:58Or lost,
13:59Within,
14:00A relatively short period of time,
14:03When he,
14:04He has the message,
14:06He has to take it,
14:07He has to deliver it,
14:10As quickly as possible,
14:13The gospel,
14:14The gospel remains,
14:15An urgent message,
14:20For some,
14:21We always live with that factor,
14:22For some,
14:24Tonight,
14:25For some in Chesham,
14:27Someone,
14:27Tonight will be the last chance,
14:29They ever have,
14:30To turn to the Lord,
14:33Their life will be required of them,
14:36And maybe,
14:38A particular time,
14:40Where you have to witness to somebody,
14:42To just be with them,
14:43Maybe the last,
14:44And we,
14:44I'm sure we've all been in those situations,
14:48Where we just had a casual conversation,
14:51An expectancy,
14:53To perhaps see that person again,
14:55Perhaps many times,
14:56Or to continue conversations,
14:59And that it doesn't happen,
15:01Their life is taken,
15:02Or circumstances change,
15:04That there is never another opportunity,
15:09To make the most of those opportunities,
15:12To be urgent,
15:16One of the,
15:17Perhaps the downsides,
15:19Of what we might call,
15:21Soft evangelism,
15:22Friendship evangelism,
15:25Is we can lose that edge,
15:27That sense of urgency,
15:29The idea that we have got tomorrow,
15:34When the only time,
15:35That the Lord has given us,
15:36Is now,
15:37We do not know,
15:38That we have tomorrow,
15:40We do not know,
15:41Whether he will return,
15:42Or whether our lives,
15:44Will be required of us,
15:46The watchman,
15:48Has an urgent message,
15:51The watchman,
15:53Is responsible,
15:55For delivering the message,
15:56Not for its response,
15:58To of course,
15:58Is the key message,
16:00Of this parable,
16:03The watchman,
16:04Just has the responsibility,
16:06To share,
16:06What he has seen,
16:08If people do not,
16:09Respond to it,
16:10Then that is not,
16:11His responsibility,
16:13He will not account for that,
16:16We are called,
16:17To be witnesses,
16:20It is not our responsibility,
16:23For how people respond,
16:25To what we might share with them,
16:27If we have shared it,
16:29Truthfully,
16:30And in the Lord's way,
16:33So there is that responsibility,
16:35To leave,
16:36To know where to leave things,
16:38With the Lord,
16:41That we have shared,
16:42What we have got to share,
16:46It is the Holy Spirit's job,
16:47To take it from there,
16:50The watchman,
16:51The watchman,
16:52Delivers an uncomfortable,
16:55Message,
16:56That may,
16:57Be rejected,
17:00We do not be,
17:02Want to be,
17:03Awakened from our sleep,
17:04We do not want,
17:05Our comfort to be disturbed,
17:07We do not want,
17:08Our complacency,
17:09To be challenged,
17:11We do not want,
17:13Or the unbeliever,
17:15Does not want,
17:15Their self-righteousness,
17:16Righteousness questioned,
17:21The unbeliever,
17:23Does not want,
17:24To be told,
17:26That they need a saviour,
17:27And that they are a sinner,
17:29It is far more comfortable,
17:31To live with,
17:33Our own,
17:35Self-confidence,
17:36Self-righteousness,
17:38And not to,
17:39Question things too deeply,
17:42The gospel to us,
17:44Is good news,
17:45It is wonderful,
17:46Wonderful news,
17:48To the unbeliever,
17:49That is not always the case,
17:53Say,
17:54We do not want,
17:55The challenge it brings,
17:58Do not want,
17:59Probably a changed lifestyle,
18:04Do not want,
18:05To acknowledge,
18:06That they need Christ,
18:08And that in him,
18:10And him alone,
18:11True righteousness,
18:12And true salvation,
18:13Can be found,
18:18The watchman,
18:19Has an uncomfortable,
18:21Message,
18:22That may be rejected,
18:23But the final,
18:25And perhaps the wonderful thing,
18:26Of what is,
18:27Not a comfortable,
18:32Passage really,
18:33In some ways,
18:34Is,
18:35Is of course,
18:36At the end,
18:37We come back,
18:37To that great truth,
18:39The Lord,
18:40The Lord,
18:41The Lord,
18:41Has no pleasure,
18:42In the death,
18:42Of the wicked,
18:44Which I think,
18:45Sometimes we do,
18:46It is,
18:47The Lord's desire,
18:49That all men,
18:50Come to salvation,
18:52Of course,
18:52Says in,
18:53One Peter,
18:54That the Lord,
18:55Is not slack,
18:56Concerning his promises,
18:59But he,
19:00He desires,
19:02All men,
19:02Come to salvation,
19:05All come,
19:06All men,
19:06Come to the knowledge,
19:07Of the truth,
19:09That is always,
19:10The heart of God,
19:17Sadly,
19:18It does not always,
19:19Get a good response,
19:20Because we,
19:21We were discussing,
19:22Or Barry was discussing,
19:23Brought to us,
19:24A few weeks back,
19:26About,
19:26Vladimir Putin,
19:28Do we pray,
19:29Do we hope,
19:30For his salvation,
19:35That the Lord's,
19:36Heart is always,
19:38That men,
19:39Come to salvation,
19:41And not,
19:42He has no delight,
19:44In the death,
19:44Of the wicked,
19:47He wants them,
19:48To repent,
19:49Of course,
19:50As we come on to,
19:51That passage in Isaiah,
19:52That is so key,
19:54To what is happening there,
19:56The message there,
19:58Very much is,
19:59If you want to end,
20:00In the darkness,
20:02Then you have to,
20:04Return to the Lord,
20:05You have to repent,
20:06So let's,
20:08Come on to that,
20:09Ezekiel was witnessing,
20:11Basically,
20:12To his own people,
20:14Isaiah,
20:15And Jeremiah as well,
20:17Were prophets,
20:17To the nations,
20:19Of course we find,
20:20In their messages,
20:21That they go,
20:22Far beyond,
20:25Just the people,
20:27Of Israel,
20:28It's called,
20:29The burden against,
20:30Juma,
20:31Juma,
20:33Also,
20:34As a,
20:34A word that means,
20:35Silent,
20:36Or,
20:37A forsaken place,
20:39Almost an abandoned place,
20:41Which ultimately,
20:42Which ultimately,
20:42Was the end,
20:44Of the people,
20:45Of Edom,
20:47They did not,
20:48Have a great future,
20:51Just a reminder,
20:52Perhaps to all of us,
20:54But they,
20:55They have this cry,
20:56Or Isaiah,
20:57Hears this cry,
21:00From them,
21:01Watchman,
21:01What of the night,
21:04And perhaps,
21:05First of all,
21:06It's worth remembering,
21:08That we need to also,
21:10Live the gospel,
21:12Demonstrate the gospel,
21:15Because,
21:17For the people of Judah,
21:18Not Israel,
21:19But the northern kingdom,
21:22But the people of Judah,
21:23Were of course,
21:23Also faced with,
21:25The Syrian army,
21:27They surrounded the country,
21:28Or surrounded Jerusalem,
21:29And we have this scene,
21:32Where this arrogant commander,
21:35Sends this scroll,
21:37Of his demands,
21:38His demands for,
21:40Surrender,
21:41To King Hezekiah,
21:42Because Isaiah was very involved,
21:44With that,
21:46And,
21:47King Hezekiah,
21:49Goes to the temple,
21:50Of the Lord,
21:51And he,
21:52Puts this scroll out,
21:53Before the altar of the Lord,
21:55And he pleads,
21:56And he prays,
21:58That the Lord will,
22:00Save him,
22:02And save his nation,
22:03And the Lord worked a miracle,
22:06And,
22:08The Assyrian army,
22:09Just ran away,
22:12And there,
22:13You had this little area,
22:15Around Judah,
22:17That wasn't a part of their empire,
22:21Because Judah as well,
22:23Fell to the Babylonians,
22:24So maybe,
22:27The people of,
22:28Of Edom,
22:31Have looked at this,
22:33Have seen this,
22:34And therefore they made this request,
22:36Of Isaiah,
22:37Why have we got this oppression?
22:40When's it going to end?
22:42When's it going to end?
22:47So the need,
22:48Perhaps to be able,
22:50To have integrity,
22:51To start with,
22:53That we,
22:53We can live the gospel,
22:55The message is,
22:57You need to repent,
22:58You need to turn to the Lord,
23:00And that is what they have done,
23:02That's what King Hezekiah,
23:04Had done,
23:04That is what Isaiah,
23:06Had encouraged him to do,
23:09And that is what has happened,
23:11So they lived the gospel,
23:14The other thing here,
23:16Is that false hope,
23:21Where he,
23:24Isiah says,
23:26Well the morning will come,
23:27This oppression will end,
23:29But another one's coming,
23:31A worse one,
23:32It's not really an answer,
23:35And the danger of false dawns,
23:37The danger of making,
23:39False promises really,
23:41There is only one way,
23:44For salvation,
23:46And that was for the people of Edom,
23:48To turn to the Lord,
23:51Return,
23:51O come back,
23:54Repent,
23:57Yes,
23:58One lot of darkness will end,
24:01The Assyrian oppression,
24:02The Assyrian captivity will end,
24:05But there will be another one,
24:06There will be a worse one,
24:08Following it,
24:09There will be another night,
24:16So the danger we have,
24:18Or people have,
24:20In false dawns,
24:23In a daylight coming,
24:26But it won't last,
24:27So Isaiah says,
24:29If you will inquire,
24:30Then the answer is,
24:32Return,
24:32Or repent,
24:34Come back,
24:35Come back to the Lord,
24:40That cry,
24:42Of the people of Edom,
24:45Has echoed down the centuries,
24:49Countless generations of people,
24:51Have cried out,
24:52Why is this happening?
24:54Why is there this violence?
24:56Why is there this oppression?
24:58Why is there this cruelty?
25:00Why is the world a wicked place?
25:07It has been a cry of mankind,
25:11Of humanity,
25:13Down the ages,
25:14It is still a cry today,
25:17The answer remains the same,
25:22If you will inquire,
25:24If you want to know the answer,
25:26Turn to the Lord,
25:28Repent,
25:30Turn to the Lord,
25:32That will end the darkness,
25:35That will bring true daylight,
25:38To your lives,
25:42So what,
25:43When we hear that watchman,
25:46What of the darkness?
25:49Have you got the answer ready?
25:51My faith looks up to Thee,
25:56Thou Lamb of Calvary,
26:00Saviour divine,
26:04Now hear me while I pray,
26:08Take all my guilt away,
26:12Oh, let me from this day
26:15Be holy thine,
26:19May thy rich grace impart
26:23Strength to my fainting heart
26:27My zealous fire
26:31As thou hast died for me
26:35Oh, may my love to Thee
26:39Pure, warm, and changeless be
26:42The living fire
26:46While I stalk, may thy tread
26:51And griefs around me spread
26:55Be thou my guide
26:59Bid darkness turn today
27:03Wipe sorrow's tears away
27:07Nor ever let me stray
27:11From Thee aside
27:14When end lives transiting
27:19When death's cold side stream
27:23Shall o'er meet all
27:27Bless, Saviour, then in love
27:31Fear and distrust remove
27:35Open, be safe above
27:39Her ransomed soul
27:42Brick, burn, and worship
27:45In the message booth
27:45Hudrás, reasonome o'eráp
