00:00Behold in death, the risen Lamb, my perfect Father's righteousness, the great unchangeable I am, the King of glory and of grace.

00:20But with himself I cannot die, my soul is purchased with his blood, my life is hid with Christ on high, with Christ my Saviour and my God.

00:42With Christ my Saviour and my God.

00:48Hallelujah.

00:51You know, so many, the words in so many of these old hymns are just so beautiful, aren't they?

00:58And so real.

00:59They give us so much of the gospel and what God is about.

01:07Now, I just want to read as we start looking at the word of God.

01:16Read Ephesians 2, 1-10.

01:19As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air.

01:32The spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient.

01:36All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh, or our sinful nature, it means there, and following its desires and thoughts.

01:48But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions.

02:05It is by grace you have been saved.

02:08And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus in order that in the coming ages he might show us the incomparable riches of his grace expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus.

02:29For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith, and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God, not by works so that no one can boast.

02:40For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works which God prepared in advance for us to do.

02:52The title of my talk today is Satan boasted, but God has already said.

03:02And that talk, believe it or not, is going to lead us into communion as well.

03:09But Satan boasted, but God has already said.

03:12As we're moving to the end, we're coming to the end of 2025, it just blows my mind.

03:22As a kid, I used to get the comics, all the sci-fi comics and so on, and there are all of those heroes in those sci-fi comics.

03:33And I really thought by now we would be flying through the air and in cars, flying cars and doing who knows what.

03:44And if we wanted to go on a holiday, we'd just be zapped across on a holiday through some sort of transporter and so on.

03:53And, well, it hasn't quite gone that well, but there have been a lot of changes in our lifetime.

04:01And even with some of the youngsters in here, you know, like Tim, for instance, you know, there's been changes.

04:10There have been tremendous changes just in our lifetimes.

04:13And as we're moving into 2026, we can already see evidence of even more changes.

04:23We can see it seems to be gearing up, doesn't it, to be even worse than all the worst of the years that I can remember, certainly.

04:32Whether in terms of increased social, economical or spiritual hardships and even oppression,

04:39which we're seeing more and more coming in, sneaking in, in various ways, we can see the signs of it all ramping up.

04:48So 2026 seems to be gearing up to be quite an interesting year, to put it mildly.

04:57And in order to be able to face whatever is coming, we need to always keep our eyes fixed on one thing.

05:05We need to be reminded of where the battle really is.

05:12Ephesians 6.12 says it well.

05:15It says, for our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities,

05:23against the powers of this dark world, and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

05:29There's something happening in the heavenly realms, which if we could see with these physical eyes, I think would terrify us.

05:38There are battles going on.

05:40There are things happening.

05:43And we know who's behind it because the scriptures are very clear about who's behind it.

05:49And ever since Lucifer, otherwise known as Satan, now attempted to raise himself up to be equal to the Lord God Almighty,

06:00he's continued to look to build himself this parallel kingdom with the Lord God.

06:08We see in Isaiah 14.12 to 15, something about the downfall of Lucifer there.

06:18We see his boasting.

06:20It all originated with Lucifer boasting about what he wanted.

06:25His pride led to his downfall.

06:28Isaiah 14.12 to 15 says,

06:31How you have fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning, how you're cut down to the ground, you who weakened the nations.

06:41For you said in your heart, I will ascend into heaven.

06:47I will exalt my throne above the stars of God.

06:52I will also sit on the mount of the congregation on the farther side of the north.

06:57I will ascend above the heights of the clouds.

07:02I will be like the Most High.

07:05Yet you shall be brought down to shale, to the lowest depths of the pit.

07:12Notice that Lucifer wanted to be like the Most High.

07:17The Most High, Elion.

07:19El Elyon.

07:20This name of God, El Elyon, it's used to signify and to highlight God's position as the highest being in the universe in any realm.

07:35This title underscores God's uniqueness in many ways.

07:40Yet Lucifer wants to break that uniqueness of God and be like him.

07:46He wants to be equal with him.

07:48He wants an equal kingdom with God's.

07:53And that boast, of course, led to Lucifer's downfall.

07:57It's interesting.

07:58In the Greek New Testament, that term boaster is alazon, right?

08:05Alazon.

08:05And when we speak about alazon, or alazon, depending on how you would pronounce it,

08:13this word describes a braggart.

08:17We use it still now in Greece, when we speak in Greek, to describe those who are braggarts or imposters.

08:25But the interesting part, really, in this is that alazon literally means the word, and it's still used in exactly the same way, to change.

08:37To be somebody who wants change, somebody who wants to change things and does it loudly, is very loud about it.

08:48Does that sound familiar to the father of all boasting?

08:51Lucifer, Satan, wants to change things, and he's not exactly quiet about it, as we see when we look at the world around us.

08:59We see those people that shout the most, that create the most mayhem and so on.

09:06They seem to get their way because people cave in to them.

09:09Not because they're right, but because they cause so much trouble and strife.

09:17People look to appease them and often give them what they're shouting for.

09:24Satan is looking to build that alternative, that parallel kingdom.

09:32And he's focusing on those who reject God.

09:37Satan hasn't changed his ways since the time when he rebelled against God.

09:43He wanted to make himself equal with God.

09:47He's looking to be an alternative option to God and have his own kingdom, as we said.

09:53And he's picking on those who are disgruntled about God, let's say.

10:01Those who reject God.

10:02He uses them as special objects, special targets, as it were.

10:09And that's also seen, all of this is also seen in his title, Antichrist.

10:14Because he's not stupid enough to think that he's very clever.

10:21He's very wise and very clever.

10:23And he doesn't think that he can win fighting head-on against God.

10:29But he's looking for an alternative option to God, to offer this alternative option.

10:37And Antichrist, in the English, it just sounds like he's against him, he's going to fight him,

10:43and he wants to defeat him.

10:45But no, that's not what it means.

10:47You see, in Greek, Antichrist is translated from Antichristos.

10:54And Antichristos, anti, isn't anti, it is instead of.

11:01That's the word for instead of.

11:04So what we have is an instead of Christ.

11:07So Satan is looking and is saying to people, look, well, yeah, he's offering that, but that's hard.

11:15That's hard.

11:16That's got a lot of flaws in it.

11:19Come here instead.

11:21Look at this instead.

11:23And he's giving this instead of option.

11:27He is building his instead of kingdom.

11:31And everything that he does is instead of.

11:35If God says this, he wants the opposite, the instead of.

11:41So he is against, but he is really instead of Christ.

11:48And that's what I call him.

11:49And that's literally what the translation would be in Greek, the instead of Christ.

11:54The Apostle Paul in 2 Corinthians 2, 11, when giving one example of Satan's plots against us, he talks about here, he's talking about unforgiveness, actually the context of it.

12:09But in general, his message is good because Paul says, in order that Satan should not unwit us or take advantage of us, for we are not ignorant or unaware of his schemes.

12:33Now, ask yourselves, how was Paul aware of Satan's schemes?

12:41Yes, through spiritual discernment, which hopefully many of us are looking to develop in our lives, in our spiritual lives as Christians.

12:51But it goes deeper than that, doesn't it?

12:54Because he's not just the spiritual discernment, but he is building, he is building his discernment around the word of God.

13:08He knows the word of God.

13:10If we stay hard on the word of God, if we stay focused on the word of God, we will get that discernment and understand more of God and understand when we are being led astray, when we are being worked against by Satan.

13:32We need that level of discernment, and it comes from the word of God.

13:40God provides the means for us to stand against the wiles of Satan.

13:48He is always there.

13:49Ephesians 6, of course, with the armor of God, describes that.

13:53I was preaching last Sunday morning at Quaint and Baptist, and as you go in, there's this full-size picture, and it's almost terrifying, of a soldier of God, you know, with all his armor on and so on.

14:11And it's a marvelous, marvelous picture.

14:13And it just reminds you, doesn't it?

14:16You know, God has provided.

14:18He does provide our armor.

14:20He provides everything that we need to be able to stand fast against Satan's wiles, against his schemes, as the Apostle Paul calls it.

14:32Now, he doesn't change.

14:35I mean, in Exodus 15, we saw, first of all, that bit of his downfall.

14:41But since then, in Exodus 15, verse 9, we see and can read,

14:48The enemy boasted, that Satan boasted,

14:51I will pursue.

14:53I will overtake.

14:55I will divide the spoil.

14:57I will gorge myself on them.

15:00My desire or my lust shall be satisfied on them.

15:04And then I'll draw my sword, and my hand will destroy them.

15:09You know, there, he is boasting about what he wants to do, what he thinks he can do.

15:20And he's talking about, there, the context there is about the children of Israel, of course.

15:27But his boast and his ways never change.

15:32He continues in the same way right up to now.

15:38He wants to pursue us.

15:40He wants to overtake us, catch up with us and overtake us.

15:45He will divide the spoils of us.

15:48And then, when he's done, he'll gorge himself on us.

15:53He'll lead us totally astray, and his lust shall be satisfied on us and through us.

16:00And then he draws his sword, and his hand destroys.

16:05That's his way of doing it.

16:06That actually reminds me quite a lot of the stages that you see in Psalm 1, don't you?

16:12In Psalm 1, blessed is a man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly or the wicked,

16:18nor stands in the path of sinners, nor sits in the seat of the scornful.

16:25Can you see that process step by step?

16:29You walk in the counsel of the ungodly and the wicked.

16:33You find yourself then standing around with them and with the sinners and being led astray in sin.

16:40And then you're sitting with them in the seat of the scornful.

16:45And there's a downward trend, and he takes us subtly, step by step, through those downward trends.

16:55But these are just boasts.

16:59They don't mean that he actually will actually succeed.

17:05In Matthew, we see, for instance, with Jesus, there was nothing vaguely boastful or ambiguous about his declaration when he was on Calvary's cross.

17:21When he cried out, it is finished, it is complete, it is perfected.

17:26In Greek, that's delester.

17:28And it means all of those things and more.

17:31OK.

17:31And there was nothing vaguely boastful or ambiguous about Jesus at that time.

17:38He was making a declaration.

17:40He had finished, completed, it perfected his work of redemption.

17:47And he was making that declaration to all authorities, spiritual authorities, to all powers.

17:53And it wasn't a boast.

17:55He was making a declaration of fact of what is what was there, not what he wanted it to be.

18:03Not even, it wasn't even a request.

18:06It was a statement of fact.

18:09And that is now eternal.

18:13Whereas Satan, when he makes, tries to make declarations, they are ambiguous because we have the power in Christ, not in ourselves, but in Christ, if we are children of God, to stand against these wiles of the devil, to understand his schemes against us.

18:36The Apostle Paul, as a young Pharisee, of course, fully understood that, having been a young Pharisee, fully understood that, of course.

18:46And he learned that he was nothing before the power and might of the Almighty God.

18:52In spite of his education and being admired as a young Pharisee, he really understood that we can only boast in the Lord and in knowing him.

19:031 Corinthians 1.30, he says,

19:05Therefore it is written, Let him who boasts, boast in the Lord.

19:102 Corinthians 10.17, he says, Let the one who boasts, boast in the Lord.

19:15In Galatians 6.14, he says, Far be it from me to boast, except in the cross of our Lord Jesus.

19:24You see, Satan can boast.

19:27He can make claims, try and make claims.

19:30But he can't always fulfil them in the children of God, if we're walking with the Lord.

19:41As much as Satan likes to boast and claim about whatever he wants to, as with that reading that we saw in Exodus 15,

19:50at the end of the day, in total confidence as children of God, we can say, But God.

19:57But God.

19:57You see, despite all of these boasts of Satan in Exodus 15.9 that we read,

20:03people of God, those who loved and knew him, could be secure,

20:08knowing through that although Satan wanted to come at them,

20:13and said that he would do all of these things to them,

20:16they knew that God had already said previously, in Exodus 6, verses 6 to 8,

20:23that, therefore say to the children of Israel,

20:28I am the Lord.

20:30I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians.

20:34I will rescue you from their bondage,

20:36and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm or mighty power,

20:41and with great judgments.

20:42I will take you as my people, and I will be your God.

20:46Then you will know that I am the Lord your God,

20:50who brings you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians.

20:53And I will bring you into the land which I swore,

20:57though the land I promised, that is,

21:00to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob,

21:03and I will give it to you as a heritage.

21:06I am the Lord.

21:09You see, three different times he says,

21:12he puts his seal on what he's claiming,

21:15because he's saying, I am the Lord.

21:19I have said it, I will do it.

21:22I am going to rescue you.

21:24I'm going to redeem you.

21:26I'm going to take you for myself.

21:29And when God says it,

21:31we know that it's not an empty boast.

21:34Jesus did the opposite to all of what Lucifer boasted about.

21:42Jesus didn't look to be equal.

21:47It said in Philippians 2,

21:51going from verse 5,

21:53let this mind be in you,

21:55which was also in Christ Jesus,

21:57who, although being in the form of God,

22:00did not consider it to be something to be grasped,

22:03to be equal with God,

22:05but made himself of no reputation,

22:09that's emptied himself of all of his privileges,

22:12taking the form of a bondservant

22:14and coming in the likeness of man,

22:17and being found in the appearance of man,

22:20he humbled himself

22:21and became obedient to the point of death,

22:24even the death of the cross.

22:27So because of that,

22:29God has highly exalted him,

22:31hasn't he?

22:34And as said,

22:37Apostle Paul understood that,

22:39all the apostles understood that,

22:42the disciples understood,

22:44that Christ was not there

22:46to be some sort of victor.

22:49You know,

22:49they missed out.

22:51They missed so much

22:53of who he was

22:55because they were looking

22:57for the wrong person.

22:59I was saying this morning

23:00where I was speaking in Watford

23:02this morning,

23:03and I was saying that,

23:04you know,

23:05they totally,

23:06they were looking

23:07for a David

23:08that would slay their Goliaths.

23:12What they didn't want

23:14was a mild-mannered Clark Kent.

23:18They wanted Superman.

23:21Yeah,

23:21that's who they really wanted.

23:23They wanted a Superman.

23:25They would wipe out

23:26all those nasty Romans

23:28and give them their land back.

23:32But, you know,

23:32God is far more concerned

23:34about what's in here

23:35in our lives

23:36than our flesh

23:38because he knows

23:40this flesh is nothing.

23:43It's just,

23:44it's just bars

23:47just holding in

23:49our souls.

23:51The Lord

23:52is concerned

23:53about our lives,

23:56our true lives,

23:57the life to come,

23:59the true life

24:00which is to come.

24:02You know,

24:02we actually get

24:03an interesting insight

24:04in how

24:04the Lord Jesus

24:06stands against Satan,

24:08which all of these things

24:09hopefully are teaching us

24:11and reminding us

24:12how we can stand

24:16against all the wiles

24:18of Satan.

24:19And we get this insight

24:21in Luke 4

24:23verses 5 to 7

24:25where Satan comes to Jesus

24:27at the end of his 40 days

24:29of fasting in the wilderness,

24:30doesn't he?

24:31And he's been praying

24:33and fasting

24:34and Satan thought,

24:35ah,

24:35it's the end.

24:37He's been 40 days

24:38praying and fasting.

24:39He's in a weakened state.

24:41I'm going to get him now.

24:44He thought he'd catch

24:45Jesus out.

24:47He wanted to offer him

24:49a way out.

24:51He wanted to offer him

24:52power and authority

24:54over the world

24:54without having to go through

24:56the suffering of the cross.

24:58And so,

24:59we're told

25:00that the devil

25:01led Jesus up

25:02into a high place

25:03and showed him

25:04in an instant

25:05all the kingdoms

25:07of the world.

25:08And listen to what he says,

25:09what Satan says.

25:11He says to him,

25:12I will give you

25:13all the authority

25:15and splendor.

25:17It has been given to me

25:19and I can give it

25:20to anybody I want to.

25:21If you worship me,

25:23it will all be yours.

25:24You don't have to go

25:25through all that suffering.

25:28You don't have to go

25:29through all of that.

25:31I can give you it.

25:32I've got the authority.

25:34It is mine.

25:35It's already been given to me

25:37and he wasn't lying there.

25:41But,

25:42of course,

25:43we know

25:43that just as the Lord Jesus

25:45withstood Satan's attempt

25:47to pull the wool

25:48over his eyes

25:49by quoting

25:50and misquoting

25:51scripture of Jesus,

25:53Jesus responded

25:54with true

25:55and honest

25:56use

25:56of scriptures.

25:58And so,

25:59in desperation,

26:00Satan had that

26:01final try

26:02to corrupt

26:03that redeeming

26:04work

26:04of salvation,

26:06that redeeming

26:07work of Jesus

26:07by boasting

26:08that this

26:09is all mine.

26:11I am the prince

26:12of the power

26:12of the air.

26:13I am the prince

26:14of this world

26:15so I can give you

26:17all the power

26:19and authority

26:20without any

26:20of the suffering.

26:23And isn't that

26:23a message

26:24that we get

26:24so often?

26:25Take the easy way.

26:27Why

26:28suffer like this?

26:29Why

26:30suffer for the Lord

26:32like this?

26:33The Lord doesn't

26:33want you to suffer.

26:35He wants you

26:35to have a nice

26:36easy life.

26:38Come on.

26:39Let me show you

26:40a better way.

26:42The instead of Christ

26:43is trying to show us

26:45the alternatives.

26:47And we

26:48must know

26:49the word of God.

26:51We must know

26:52God himself

26:54to be able

26:55to withstand

26:56these things.

26:57Satan spoke

26:59as the prince

27:00of this world

27:01as John

27:02calls him

27:03in 1430.

27:04John 1430

27:05refers to the prince

27:06of the world.

27:07Ephesians 2

27:081 to 2

27:09refers to the prince

27:10of the power

27:11of the air.

27:14And

27:14yeah

27:15but

27:17he had that

27:18authority

27:18but Jesus

27:19Jesus

27:21knew something.

27:23Jesus

27:23knew

27:24that if he

27:25could just

27:26hold on

27:27and go

27:29through everything

27:30he would win

27:31it anyway.

27:33He would have

27:34all authority

27:35and all power

27:36and defeat

27:37Satan

27:38at the same

27:39time.

27:40If we look at

27:40Matthew 28

27:4218

27:42we can see

27:44Jesus saying

27:45to his disciples

27:46all authority

27:48in heaven

27:48on earth

27:49has been given

27:50to me.

27:51Hang on

27:52that Satan

27:53had said

27:54all authority

27:55over heaven

27:57and earth

27:57was his.

27:58What's happened

27:59meanwhile?

28:00The cross.

28:02Jesus had been

28:03right through

28:04to the cross.

28:06He paid the price.

28:08He stood there

28:09hanging on that cross

28:11and he said

28:12et deliste.

28:13It is finished.

28:15It is complete.

28:17It is perfect.

28:18It is perfect.

28:20It is all done.

28:21And in that

28:22instant

28:22he won

28:24over

28:25and all

28:26authority

28:27was won

28:28over

28:28for Christ.

28:30Christ took

28:31that authority

28:32and in

28:33taking that

28:34authority

28:35he beat

28:36Satan

28:36once and for

28:37all

28:37as well

28:38for us.

28:40Isn't that

28:41a marvelous

28:41thought

28:43to have?

28:44Our Savior

28:45is the one

28:46that has

28:47beaten

28:48the one

28:49who is

28:49against

28:50us

28:50our

28:51enemy

28:51right

28:52now.

28:55You know

28:56all the

28:57word of

28:57God

28:58stirs up

28:58emotions

28:59and

29:00passions

29:01and people

29:02you only

29:02have to

29:03begin

29:03talking

29:04to

29:04people

29:04about

29:05the

29:06Lord

29:06and

29:06they'll

29:07either

29:07say

29:07no

29:08no

29:08I

29:08don't

29:09want

29:09to

29:09know

29:10or

29:10I

29:10don't

29:10want

29:10to

29:11hear

29:11or

29:12whatever

29:12else

29:12it is

29:13but

29:13it

29:13stirs

29:14up

29:14passions

29:14and

29:15emotions

29:15in

29:16people

29:16and

29:16they're

29:16different

29:17with

29:17different

29:18people

29:18and

29:19people

29:20just

29:21hate

29:21the

29:22thought

29:22of

29:23something

29:24so

29:24pure

29:24so

29:25beautiful

29:25that

29:26they

29:27feel

29:28that

29:28they

29:28cannot

29:29grasp

29:29perhaps

29:30and

29:32yet

29:33people

29:35have

29:35such

29:35mostly

29:36misplaced

29:37convictions

29:39the wars

29:40have been

29:40fought

29:41world wars

29:42being fought

29:43I

29:43find it

29:44fascinating

29:44that

29:44despite

29:45our

29:45worst

29:46such

29:46failings

29:47though

29:47despite

29:48all of

29:49us

29:49failing

29:50God

29:50so

29:51often

29:51over

29:52and

29:52over

29:52when I

29:53look

29:53back

29:53over

29:53my

29:54life

29:54even

29:54as

29:55a

29:55Christian

29:55and

29:56think

29:56about

29:57how

29:57many

29:57times

29:58I

29:58failed

29:58the

29:59Lord

29:59and

30:00how

30:00ashamed

30:01I

30:01am

30:02about

30:02some

30:02of

30:02those

30:02things

30:03now

30:03and

30:05yet

30:05God

30:06but

30:07God

30:07but

30:08God

30:08he

30:09still

30:10loved

30:10me

30:10he

30:11still

30:11cared

30:12for

30:12me

30:12he

30:13still

30:13picked

30:13me

30:14up

30:14when

30:15I

30:15lost

30:15faith

30:16when

30:18wrong

30:18things

30:18when

30:19allowed

30:20Satan

30:20to lead

30:21through

30:22that

30:23declining

30:24still

30:35encouragement

30:45about
