Paul Duffett leads us on our journey through the second chapter of our 2 Peter series. Paul from Quainton Baptist Chapel has found many points for comparison between chapter two and the book of Jude, which makes for another fascinating sermon from this popular preacher. Paul insightfully guides us, verse by verse, through the chapter's main points of temptation and deliverance.

00:00I know not what of good or ill may be reserved for me,
00:12of weary ways or golden days before his face I see.
00:22But I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that he is able
00:35to keep that which I've committed unto him against that day.
00:47Well, a very warm welcome to you tonight. We've come to worship the Lord God Almighty.
00:55So I'm going to read, if you'd like to follow me, it's the Book of Peter, the second letter.
01:05And we're now looking at chapter 2 tonight.
01:08Peter writes,
01:09But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you,
01:19who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them,
01:25and bring upon themselves swift destruction.
01:31Many shall follow their permissuous ways, by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of.
01:40And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you,
01:46whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not.
01:54For if God spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell,
02:00and delivered them into the chains of darkness to be reserved unto judgment,
02:05and spared not the old world, but saved Noah, the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness,
02:14bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly, and turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes,
02:22condemned them with an overflow, making them an ensample unto those that should after live ungodly,
02:30ungodly, and delivered just lot, vexed with filthy conversation of the wicked.
02:37For the righteous man dwelleth among them, in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds.
02:48The Lord knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations,
02:53and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment, to be punished.
03:02But chiefly, them that walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness, and despise government.
03:09Presumptuous are they self-willed, they are not afraid to speak evil of dignitaries.
03:16Whereas angels, which are greater in power and might, bring not railing accusation against them before the Lord.
03:25But these, as natural brute beasts, made to be taken and destroyed, speak evil of the things that they understand not,
03:34and shall utterly perish in their own corruption, and shall receive the reward of unrighteousness,
03:41as they that count it pleasure to riot in the day time.
03:47Spots they are, and blemishes, sporting themselves with their own deceivings whilst they feast with you.
03:55Having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin,
04:01beguiling unstable souls, and heart they have exercised with covetous practices,
04:09cursed children, which have forsaken the right way,
04:14and have gone astray following the way of Balaam, the son of Bozal,
04:17who loved the wages of unrighteousness, but was rebuked for his iniquity.
04:24The dumbass speaking with man's voice forbade the madness of the prophet.
04:31These are wells without water, clouds they carried with a tempest,
04:38to whom the mist of darkness is reserved for ever.
04:41For when they speak great swelling words of vanity,
04:46they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through much wantonness,
04:51those that were clean escaped from them who live in error.
04:55While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants of corruption.
05:02For of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought in bondage.
05:07For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ,
05:15they are again entangled therein, and overcome,
05:20the latter end is worse with them than the beginning.
05:24For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness,
05:29than after they had known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them.
05:35But it is happened unto them according to the true proverb.
05:41The dog is turned to his own vomit again,
05:45and the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire.
05:51Well, we're looking tonight at the second chapter of Peter's letter, his second letter.
06:01So it's 2 Peter 2. If you want to turn to it, you're very welcome to.
06:04We shall be referring to it and reading through it again, but in piecemeal.
06:07So, just a few thoughts to bring before you.
06:15The Apostle Peter in chapter 1, I believe that was last week,
06:19anticipating his own soon demise from this earth,
06:23is endowed by the Holy Spirit to affirm the truth of Scripture,
06:28and recalls when he was an eyewitness,
06:32and indeed an ear witness, because he heard the word of the Lord, didn't he?
06:35At the Mount of Transfiguration,
06:38when God the Father bestowed honour and glory on his Son, the Lord Jesus Christ.
06:44Peter, then, has first-hand knowledge and experience as he writes this letter to believers.
06:56He's conveying to them confirmation of a more sure word of prophecy,
07:04which he knows will be contested even from within their own ranks.
07:09He therefore commences chapter 2 in this vein.
07:14We're going to read the first three verses.
07:16But there were false prophets also among the people,
07:22even as there shall be false teachers among you,
07:26who privily shall bring damnable heresies,
07:30even denying the Lord that bought them,
07:33and bring upon themselves swift destruction.
07:36And many shall follow their pernicious ways,
07:40by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of.
07:45And through covetousness they shall with feigned words make merchandise of you,
07:52whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not,
07:57and their damnation slumbereth not.
07:59And so we just leave it there,
08:03while we consider the thought that Peter starts by warning the flock
08:08that heretical ideas trumpeted by those outside the church
08:13will be introduced into the church.
08:15One such claim was raised in the headlines of a recent edition of the Daily Star.
08:23This is from the news from Daily Star.
08:27Laura Elvin and Karen Cavan,
08:30deputy news editor,
08:32writes at the beginning of this month,
08:351st of January,
08:362026.
08:37And I quote,
08:39New evidence shows that Jesus was never crucified,
08:45and AI can prove it without doubt.
08:52Your reaction is the same as mine when I first read it.
08:55It continues.
08:57Julian Doyle,
08:59a veteran filmmaker behind Monty Python's Life of Brian,
09:03says he spent decades researching
09:06and claims that the man put to death
09:08was not Jesus,
09:10but someone else entirely.
09:12The veteran filmmaker behind Monty Python's Life of Brian
09:16claims to have uncovered new evidence
09:18that Jesus was never crucified
09:20and says artificial intelligence can prove it.
09:23Julian Doyle says he has spent decades researching
09:28and since becoming troubled while editing the now famous scene
09:32where Eric Idle,
09:34Graham Chapman and John Cleese hang on their crosses
09:37singing always look on the bright side of life.
09:41After 40 years of research,
09:43he now claims the man put to death was not Christ,
09:46but Judas the Galilean,
09:48a rebel who led an uprising against Roman rule.
09:51He says the church confused the two men as Christianity was taking shape
09:57and that Jesus took part in an earlier symbolic ritual crucifixion
10:01before being put to death years later by stoning.
10:05End of quote.
10:06I shan't go on, it's ugh, isn't it?
10:11If this claim gained traction, then it would test the faith and belief of many,
10:17as people put their confidence in and rely more on artificial intelligence.
10:22Just as an aside, of course, we know that artificial intelligence is not something to be believed, in fact.
10:33It's quite interesting, isn't it, that one chief constable, I believe, lost his job, didn't he?
10:40Because he lied to Parliament a couple of times, claiming that AI had told him a certain thing, and of course it's completely false.
10:49Again, you'll probably know the detail from these news reports and things this week.
10:55But there we are, AI, beware.
11:00So, there we have it then.
11:05Now, what we have here is a blatant denial that our Lord Jesus Christ hung on Calvary's cross to shed his blood and paid for our sins.
11:16No, someone else did, according to the article.
11:22Peter states in the opening verse of this chapter that damnable heresies will bring about swift destruction.
11:30However, he goes on to warn about these influencers,
11:35how many shall follow their pernicious ways and become twisted in their reasoning,
11:42and the way of truth shall be evil spoken of.
11:45We have this today.
11:47Being a Christian, a follower of the way of truth, can precipitate an evil reaction.
11:54For instance, one can be thought of, or called, even called, a bigot.
12:03Peter brings heavy warning about wrong teaching coming into the church.
12:10Similarly, the letter Jude.
12:11The letter of Jude rings alarm bells in a surprisingly similar way to this chapter in Peter's second letter.
12:20Now, if you're familiar with Jude, then what we read through in this second chapter of 2 Peter, very, very similar.
12:30In fact, what I've done here, I've got a sheet where I have printed out on one side the chapter that we're looking at tonight, 2 Peter 2, and on the other side I've printed out the letter of Jude, which is 24 verses.
12:54I'm going to read to you, and again, there might be more than I'm reading, but I've picked out 15 either words or items, if you like, which cross over.
13:08They're in both the chapter that we've just read, 2 Peter 2, and they're also in the book of Jude, the letter of Jude.
13:16Let me read them to you.
13:18I think from that list, you can get a flavour of what both of the...
13:47the scriptures are indeed involved in there, and they're bringing distinct and timely warning, aren't they?
13:57So, we have here the apostle Peter now, continuing on in the next five verses, explaining that God is as good as his word.
14:06He judges the fallen angels and reprobate mankind.
14:11However, as God pours out his judgment, in his wrath he remembers mercy.
14:17In his sparing not, he also saves and delivers the godly.
14:23Let me read these continuing verses here from verse 4.
14:28Verse 4.
14:30Spared not the angels that sinned, but cast them down to hell, and delivered them into the chains of darkness to be reserved unto judgment.
14:39And spared not the old world, but saved Noah, the eighth person, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood upon the world of the ungodly.
14:48And turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes, condemned them with an overthrow, making them an ensample unto those that should live ungodly.
15:00And delivered just lot, vexed with the filthy conversation of the wicked.
15:06For that righteous man dwelleth among them in seeing and hearing, vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds.
15:15God knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations, and to reserve the unjust unto the day of judgment to be punished.
15:25But chiefly, them that walk after the flesh, in the lust of uncleanness, and despise government.
15:33Now, you might have thought, and quite rightly so, that I was stumbling over some of those thoughts and phrases there.
15:40Because that is one long sentence, actually, when you read it.
15:45It culminates then, but chiefly those that walk after the flesh, in the lust of uncleanness, and despise government.
15:53The Lord knows how to deal with these people.
15:56Scripture, of course, is self-explanatory.
16:00If you find hard bits in the scripture, you find difficult to learn it.
16:03And then you've got to look, as it were, elsewhere to see where scripture actually explains it and comment.
16:09Yes, it's good to look out at commentaries, and I'm sure that's a worthy thing to do.
16:14And other people do have insights that perhaps the Lord doesn't immediately show to us.
16:20But scripture is the best comment on scripture, of course.
16:25So, it's interesting to note that God cast the angels that sinned down to hell.
16:33Yes, there is a hell.
16:36And in fact, God delivers them into chains of darkness, awaiting his judgment.
16:43So, notice then that hell is a holding place, while the angels that sinned await judgment.
16:50We know that from Revelation chapter 20, verse 14, hell itself, along with death, will be thrown into the lake of fire.
17:01Yet he delivers just lot out of the culture and filth of Sodom and Gomorrah.
17:09It's interesting that this description here, just lot, could mean lot alone.
17:18We know that to be not true, because in fact, his daughters came out with him.
17:23In fact, his wife came out, although she didn't make it to the end, did she?
17:27So, it wasn't a lot alone, but in fact, the just lot means righteousness there, or righteous lot, describing the character of this man.
17:40This all speaks to us, the believers in Christ.
17:43We too should be vexed by the filth and squalor of this world.
17:48We must take heed of the warning emanating from these verses.
17:52Do not be swept along and entertained by the world, whether it be through television programming or social media.
18:01Yes, I believe that we are being programmed and softened up to accept the world's ethos and values.
18:10Notice Lot's vexation came through seeing and hearing.
18:16Although we are in the world, we're not to be of the world.
18:20May we be like Noah, a preacher of righteousness in this sin-sick world.
18:25Note further that God honours God-ordained family groups.
18:30Families are precious.
18:32He made us to be in families.
18:34If you're a Christian, you have been adopted into the family of God.
18:39It was through the righteousness of Noah and Lot that God saved their families.
18:45I believe that God ordained families to be constituted of a man married to his female wife.
18:55That's the only recognition of marriage that God has.
19:00And we're living in days when that's been refuted.
19:03But of course, God's word is everlasting.
19:07Hallelujah.
19:08Praise his name.
19:10OK, so there we have it then.
19:14Genesis 2 confirms this.
19:17And Adam said,
19:18Now this is bone of my bones, flesh of my flesh.
19:21She should be called woman because she was taken out of man.
19:25Therefore, a man shall leave his father and his mother and shall cleave unto his wife.
19:31And they too shall be one flesh.
19:34That's the basis then of marriage and of family.
19:40So we have seen in these verses that God spared Noah and Lot before he dealt with the unjust and the ungodly.
19:49One aspect of this sparing is given us in verse 9.
19:53God knoweth how to deliver the godly out of temptations.
19:59It's interesting here because temptation is something that comes to each one of us.
20:05In fact, in Hebrews, the writer puts in chapter 4,
20:09For we have not a high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities,
20:14but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin.
20:19There, the writer is talking about our Lord Jesus Christ, who is a high priest.
20:23Hallelujah.
20:24But he also was tempted like as we are and yet without sin.
20:32He didn't succumb to the temptations.
20:34And I believe that it wasn't only in the wilderness with being tempted by the devil that that was the sum total of his temptation.
20:45I'm sure right the way throughout his life, there were temptations.
20:51Matthew 6 says, and of course, familiar words because they're part of the Lord's Prayer, aren't they?
20:58Or the disciples prayer, some people call it.
21:00And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
21:04For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory.
21:07Amen.
21:08And finally, in James Head, regarding temptation, we have it here.
21:15Let no man say when he's tempted, I'm tempted of God.
21:19For God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man.
21:27I certainly take that to mean that God cannot succumb to any temptation.
21:34In other words, even in the wilderness, when the evil one sought to draw him away from that blessed union that he has with his father,
21:44Jesus did not succumb to temptation.
21:48And in that respect, he cannot be tempted with evil, as it were.
21:52And so let's continue on, then, in verses 10 and 11, then, of our chapter 2 that we're looking at.
21:58Because we've got further insights here.
22:00Presumptious, they are self-willed, they're not afraid to speak evil of dignities.
22:05Whereas angels, which are greater in power and might, bring not reigning accusation against them before the Lord.
22:15Now, what does all this mean, then?
22:17Well, we have an insight here into hierarchy.
22:23Verse 10 mentions dignities, power and might.
22:28God has established ranking in his creation, in order.
22:34It is an order, isn't it, that he's placed us in.
22:38We've been talking about families, for instance, just now.
22:41Parents should have the honour and respect of their children on your father and mother.
22:45You remember that from the Ten Commandments.
22:48And so in other areas of life, policemen, teachers, and dare I say government.
22:54We might heavily disagree with government.
22:58But if the Lord's placed them there, we're to pray for them, that the Lord might be gracious.
23:03Not only to them, who are to give an account of their government before Almighty God, I believe that.
23:09But also to us, who are perhaps reeling under some of the measures that the government takes.
23:18And so in also in the angel realm, talked here about not railing, not bringing a railing accusation against them before the Lord.
23:33Going back to Jude that we were looking at just earlier on, I just read verse nine.
23:40Yet Michael, the archangel, you can't get any higher than an archangel in angel realms, can you?
23:48When contending with the devil, he disputed about the body of Moses,
23:53durst not bring against him a railing accusation, but said, the Lord rebuke you.
24:01Michael here was legitimately invoking the name of the Lord in his dispute with Satan.
24:08So we're given a glimpse of the battle in the heavenlies.
24:14And I believe that if we read through Jude that we're not reading through tonight, but also if we did read through it,
24:24then we could colour code it back, as it were, to that chapter that we're reading in Peter here, chapter two.
24:31No, he said, the Lord rebuke you, as he brought that railing accusation.
24:37It's quite graphic here.
24:39And I think this is one of the beauties of reading this chapter, that there are no ifs and buts about it.
24:47Peter writes, doesn't he, about what it is, as it were.
24:52He doesn't sort of seek to hide these things.
24:55And indeed, as I say, Scripture is very much a comment on Scripture.
25:00So we carry on then.
25:02The chapter continues in a similar vein.
25:05It brings a scathing, yet justified, severe warning against impostors, infiltrating the company of God's people.
25:14And we are to be careful and indeed beware of these things.
25:20I haven't got a toppy with me tonight, but I think you do have like for the last days here.
25:25And indeed, the cover of the latest one that we received yesterday is warning.
25:31And there's quite a sort of a lurid cover on it, which is uncharacteristic of like for the last days.
25:37But certainly Tony Pearce believes that there should be a really distinct and heavy warning of the days in which we're living.
25:47So, starting at verse 12 then, we have these words.
25:51But these, as natural brute beasts, made to be taken and destroyed, speak evil of the things that they understand not,
25:59and shall utterly perish in their own corruption,
26:02and shall receive the reward of unrighteousness as they count it pleasure to riot in the daytime.
26:09Spots they are, and blemishes, sporting themselves with their own deceivings, while they feast with you.
26:17Having eyes full of adultery, and that cannot cease from sin, beguiling unstable souls.
26:24And heart they have exercised with covetous practices, cursed children.
26:31Which have forsaken the right way, and are gone astray following the way of Balaam, the son of Bozel,
26:38who loved the wages of unrighteousness, but was rebuked for his iniquity.
26:44The dumbass, speaking with man's voice, forbade the madness of the prophet.
26:50These are wells without water, clouds that are carried with a tempest, to whom the mist of darkness is reserved for ever.
26:59These are heavy words indeed, aren't they?
27:03We come back to the brute beasts later, but Peter cites Balaam, who loved the wages of unrighteousness,
27:11as an example of those who sow corruption.
27:14Balaam was commissioned by Balak, king of the Moabites, to curse God's people Israel.
27:23I believe that it seems like the evil one has commissioned money preachers to fleece Christians.
27:31We had it in verse 3 about making merchandise of you, earlier on in the chapter we're looking at.
27:37And to bring wrong teaching.
27:40May we be discerning about those who we support, and those by whom we are influenced.
27:50Got to be careful. Got to exercise discernment.
27:55And so we have the final five verses, which identify the tactics of and destiny of these reprobates.
28:07Starting at verse 18.
28:10For when they speak great swelling words of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through much wantonness, those that were clean escape from them, who live in error.
28:23While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants of corruption, for of whom a man is overcome, of the same he is brought in bondage.
28:35For if after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, they are again entangled therein and overcome, the latter end is worse with them than the beginning.
28:48For it had been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than after they had known it, to turn from the holy commandment delivered unto them.
29:00I'd like to just pause there and to offer you my understanding of these words.
29:05Are these saved people, Peter is referring to here?
29:12They have the knowledge of the Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, so surely they must be saved.
29:18After all, aren't they included in the them referred to the very beginning of this chapter in verse one, the Lord that bought them?
29:29Yes, they, along with us, have been bought by the Lord.
29:35But instead of believing on the Lord Jesus Christ, John 3.16, of course, known to you, they deny him.
29:42It's a bit like this M&S voucher card here. Look, I've got an M&S card here, would you believe?
29:49It's stuck to the thing there, but you can see it there.
29:53£25. Not to be sniffed at, is it? There we are.
29:58An M&S card there. And this is what I'm likening it to.
30:03Someone kindly bought this voucher, gave it to me as a gift.
30:08I believe that when I stand in front of the checkout at M&S, the value of the voucher will be redeemed to benefit me.
30:16I won't have to pay £25, because the voucher will be recognised as valid.
30:24I believe that when I stand in front of God, the value of Jesus' blood will be redeemed to benefit me.
30:32I won't have to pay for my sin.
30:34Jesus' blood will be recognised as valid for my salvation.
30:40Can you say that? Do you believe that Jesus' blood cleanses you from all sin in front of the Holy God?
30:50We've been reviewing this heavy chapter, not in detail.
30:56Obviously there's more that could be said, but just pointing out various aspects.
31:01It's largely, I believe, self-explanatory as we read through it.
31:04It's quite heavy in places. Self-explanatory.
31:07But we have looked more closely on parts while focusing on certain themes.
31:14Finally, I believe the Apostle Peter has been describing the unsaved, those who are destined for eternal damnation.
31:24And he closes this chapter by recalling in Proverbs 26, verse 11, as a dog returned to its vomit, so a fool returned to his folly.
31:36And he also likens them to pigs.
31:41So the last verse here, verse 22, as we come toward a close.
31:47Verse 22 of chapter 2 that we've been looking at tonight.
31:51But it is happened unto them, according to the true proverb, the dog has returned to his own vomit again.
31:59And the sow that was washed to her wallowing in the mire.
32:04Dog in the AV is mentioned 40 times, mostly with disdain.
32:09And pigs are unclean and not kosher.
32:12Here, the dog has, I don't know, overeaten or had an upset stomach or whatever, but it returns to its own vomit.
32:20It's interesting, its own vomit.
32:22How disgusting is that?
32:24And the clean pig revels in the dirt.
32:28In many respects, this chapter is about those who are in rebellion against God and can be summed up in Isaiah 66.
32:40Just a few verses here.
32:43Verse 3.
32:44He that killeth an ox, as if he slew a man.
32:49He that sacrificeth a lamb, as if he cut off a dog's neck.
32:55He that offereth an oblation, as if he offered swine's blood.
33:00He that burneth incense, as if he is blessed an idol.
33:05Yea, they have chosen their own ways, and their soul delighteth in their abominations.
33:11I will also choose their delusions, and will bring their fears upon them.
33:16Because when I called, none did answer.
33:19When I spake, they did not hear, but they did evil before mine eyes, and chose that in which I delighted not.
33:31In 1999, I believe it was, the Wolverhampton Art Gallery commissioned an installation.
33:42And they had it placed, actually.
33:44It was, it was that of a sheep, actually, interestingly enough.
33:49And it was placed on the portico above the entrance into the art gallery.
33:55I think it went into disrepair, this installation, but they refurbished it in 2015.
34:03And I've got, I don't know if it's still there or not.
34:06But the idea was, every hour, it's a bit like these sort of anatomical clocks and things.
34:10Or astronomical clocks, or whatever you call them.
34:13Have you seen them?
34:14You know, on the hour, you know, something happens to them, and things, you know, move.
34:17This is what happened with the sheep.
34:19It was suddenly rear up above the parapet, above the balustrade.
34:24Lovely sheep there.
34:26Work of art.
34:27But like the wings, if you like, or the shell of a ladybird.
34:34After there's been some sort of smoke arising, the sheep would actually sort of open up,
34:42and there'd be a wolf come out inside with fiery eyes, and I don't know if it's hissing or whatever.
34:49And then, obviously, after the thing is finished, it goes back in until the next hour strikes.
34:55But there we are.
34:57An installation which gives us something of a picture of what Peter is writing about here.
35:04It's the wolf coming in sheep's clothing, as it were, and something to be careful of, and to take note.
35:14And we need recourse, don't we, to this chapter again, if we're under any illusion about people who perhaps come in,
35:23or if we hear something on the YouTube or what we might be, that we have recourse to God's holy and precious word.
35:30Well, may the Lord bless those few thoughts to us tonight.
35:34A difficult chapter in many respects, but very, very informative.
35:39May the Lord bless those thoughts, in Jesus' name. Amen.
35:43I know not why God's wantless friends to me has been made known.
35:54Nor why I am worthy as I am, He claimed me for His own.
36:06But I know all whom I have believed, and am persuaded that He is able to keep that which I've committed unto Him against that day.
36:31I know not how this saving thing to me He did impart.
36:42Oh, how believing in His word brought peace within my heart.
36:54But I know all whom I have believed, and am persuaded that He is able to keep that which I've committed unto Him against that day.
37:19I know not how the Spirit moves convincing men of sin.
37:31Revealing Jesus through the Word, creating faith in Him.
37:43But I know all whom I have believed, and am persuaded that He is able to keep that which I've committed unto Him against that day.
38:08I know not what of good or ill may be reserved for me.
38:19Of weary ways, of weary ways, of golden days, before His face I've seen.
38:31But I know all whom I have believed, and am persuaded that He is able to keep that which I've committed unto Him against that day.
38:56Amen.
38:58Amen.
38:59Amen.
39:00Amen.
