01:12Well, welcome to Charteridge Gospel Mission Church.
01:15And we're here, of course, this evening to remember the birth of the Lord Jesus Christ, who we believe strongly is the Saviour and Redeemer of the world.
01:26But as we'll be seeing during our carol service, He's a lot more than that as well.
01:33Now, there are some 200 different names and titles given to the Lord Jesus in the Bible.
01:43And among some most commonly known ones, you can see there a Lord, Saviour, Emmanuel, which means God is with us.
01:51King of kings, Lord of lords, light of the world, Son of God, Son of man, bread of life, Prince of peace, and so on.
01:59So, you see, He's really multifaceted.
02:02And that means that He can reach us wherever we are.
02:06Whatever we're going through, however traumatic or however, whatever it is in our lives, whether it's family or national or we're worried about things,
02:16it doesn't matter, He can touch us.
02:19And that gives us great joy in our hearts.
02:21And what I want to start us with is singing Joy to the World.
02:26We're going to start with a well-known carol there, Joy to the World.
02:31Joy to the World.
02:34Joy to the World, the Lord is come.
02:40Let every seed a king.
02:45Let every heart prepare Him room.
02:51And heaven let us sing.
02:53And heaven let us sing.
02:56And heaven let us sing.
03:01To the world the Savior reigns.
03:11Let magnus all employ.
03:16Wild fields and flowers, rocks, hills and plains.
03:23Repeat the sounding joy.
03:25Repeat the sounding joy.
03:27Repeat, repeat the sounding joy.
03:38Joy rules the world in truth and grace.
03:43And mercenaries prove the glories of His righteousness.
03:54And wonders of His love.
03:57And wonders of His love.
04:00And wonders and wonders of His love.
04:05That's a lovely carol.
04:10And of course, you know, it talks about the joy that we have as we look at the baby that was born.
04:18And we're reminded in a way that when Jesus was born, He was just a normal looking baby.
04:26He looked just like any other little baby that might have been born around that time.
04:31And He was probably totally undistinguishable from any other little Jewish baby that was born at that time.
04:38And yet, He was so totally and utterly different and unique in many, many different ways.
04:46And, you know, I often wonder myself, how much did Mary and Joseph really understand about this normal looking beautiful baby that was born to them?
04:59What was it?
05:01What would have gone through their minds?
05:03We know that the angel had told Mary and had told Joseph separately a number of different things about the baby that was to be born.
05:15And we know that when the shepherds came to Mary and Joseph after the baby was born, they also said,
05:21Hey, we saw these angels and they said this about this baby.
05:27So we've come to see this baby.
05:28And all we're told is that Mary stored up in her heart all that she heard.
05:35But at the end of the day, did she really, truly understand what this child would grow up to be and do?
05:46And so I want us to sing to the next song now, Mary, Did You Know?
05:52And this goes through a lot of the things about that child.
05:57Mary, did you know?
05:59That your baby boy would one day walk on water?
06:28Mary, did you know?
06:29Mary, did you know that your baby boy would save our sons and daughters?
06:37Did you know that your baby boy?
06:38Did you know that your baby boy has come to make you new?
06:46This child that you delivered?
06:48This child that you delivered will soon deliver you?
06:56Mary, did you know that your baby boy?
06:57Mary, did you know that your baby boy would come a storm with his hands?
07:15And did you know that your baby boy?
07:16And when you kissed your little baby, you've kissed the face of God?
07:34Mary, did you know that your baby boy would come to make you new?
07:35That your baby boy would come to make you new?
07:36That your baby boy would come to make you new?
07:37You know that their baby boy would come to make you new?
07:38The blind will see, the deaf will hear
07:59The dead will live again

08:40Is heaven's perfect love?
08:44The sleeping child you're holding
08:48Is the great high love

09:12You know, it's said that everything's easier in retrospect, isn't it?
09:20To understand and to see
09:22And it's easier for us being able to look back over biblical history
09:27To understand how incredibly accurate
09:31So many prophecies and predictions have been fulfilled in that child
09:36The Old Testament, we're told, has 351 predictions of that child
09:45Of the Christ who was to come
09:48And a lot of those predictions were done
09:50Hundreds and hundreds
09:51Were written by prophets
09:53Hundreds and hundreds of years in the Old Testament
09:56They were
09:57Even some of the prophecies were from thousands of years before
10:03And the odds of them coming true
10:08Are absolutely infinitesimal
10:10And approximately 1,800 prophecies overall in the Bible
10:17With 1,200 and something in the Old Testament
10:20And 578 in the New Testament
10:24And we're seeing all these old 351 about Jesus specifically
10:29And his coming in the Old Testament
10:31Fulfilled in the New Testament
10:34Now, the staggering thing
10:37Is that
10:39A mathematician in America
10:42Actually took the time
10:43And it took them many, many, many months to do this
10:47Peter Stoner, the chairman of the Department of Mathematics and Astronomy
10:51At Pasadena College in the USA
10:54Did this
10:55And he's a very well-known mathematician apparently
10:59And he just selected
11:01Out of those 351 prophecies in the Old Testament about Jesus
11:06Just eight
11:07Only eight of them
11:09And he got his mathematics students
11:13To do a course
11:16Over a matter of a whole term
11:19To actually work out
11:21What are the probabilities
11:23Of these eight prophecies
11:27Being fulfilled by one man
11:30Now, they came up with this figure
11:34Which just, I'm not a mathematician
11:36I failed my maths at school
11:38I'm pretty thick at maths still
11:41But this was
11:4210 to the power of 17
11:46That means
11:48One chance
11:50In a hundred million billion
11:53I'm told that's a quadrillion apparently
11:57Oh yeah, I wouldn't know that
11:58Anyway
11:59And he describes it this way
12:02To try and get the picture across to us
12:05Of how unlikely it is
12:09That these could have just happened
12:10Right
12:11He said if we take
12:12That many
12:14A hundred million billion
12:15Or one quadrillion
12:17Silver dollars
12:18Now they're quite large
12:20Silver dollars
12:20Anybody who knows the American silver dollar
12:23But quite large
12:24These silver dollars
12:25And lay them on the face of Texas
12:27They will cover all of Texas
12:30Two feet deep
12:31That's how many there are
12:33Now, in British terms
12:36The land mass of Texas
12:38Is equal to 2.7 times
12:41The land mass of the whole of the British Isles
12:45So, think around that
12:47My mind's already crazy
12:49Yeah
12:49And it says
12:51And then he said
12:52Right, now it's two feet thick
12:54Of these silver coins
12:58Now blindfold a man
13:00And tell him he can travel as far as he wants
13:04And you've marked one coin
13:06You've marked one coin amongst all of them
13:09He can walk as far as he wants
13:11To cover Texas
13:12And just at random
13:14When he feels the time is right
13:16Pick out one coin
13:17And that is the chance
13:20Of getting the right coin
13:24This one in a hundred million billion
13:27One in one quadrillion
13:28So, it is possibly impossible
13:32You know
13:32But that's come from mathematicians
13:35And we look back at these things
13:38And we think
13:39My goodness
13:39And yet
13:40Hundreds of these
13:42Have already been fulfilled
13:45And
13:47It really is
13:50Quite something
13:51But
13:52This wouldn't be a carol service
13:55If we didn't have the readings
13:56About Christ
13:58And how all of this
13:59Came about
14:00And just in this one
14:02Little section
14:04From the Gospel of Luke
14:05Chapter 2
14:06The first 20 verses
14:08We have got
14:10A lot
14:11Of different
14:13Prophecies
14:14Being fulfilled
14:15I'll just quickly read through this
14:19And
14:19In those days
14:21Caesar Augustus
14:22Issued a decree
14:24That a census
14:25Should be carried out
14:26Or taken
14:27Of the whole Roman world
14:29This was the first census
14:31Which took place
14:32While Quirinius
14:33Was governor
14:34Of Syria
14:35And everyone
14:37Went to their own town
14:38To register
14:38So Joseph
14:40Also went up
14:41From the town of Nazareth
14:42In Galilee
14:43To Judea
14:44To Bethlehem
14:45In the town of David
14:47Because he belonged
14:48To the house
14:49Of the line of David
14:50And he went there
14:52To register with Mary
14:54Who was pledged
14:55To be married to him
14:56And was expecting a child
14:57While they were there
14:58The time came
14:59For the baby
15:00To be born
15:01And she gave birth
15:02To her firstborn
15:04A son
15:04And she wrapped him
15:06In cloths
15:06And placed him
15:08In a manger
15:08Because there was
15:09No guest room
15:10Available for them
15:12Now there were shepherds
15:14Living out in the fields
15:16Nearby
15:16Helping watch
15:18Over their flocks
15:19At night
15:19And an angel
15:20Of the Lord
15:21Appeared to them
15:22And the glory
15:23Of the Lord
15:24Shone around them
15:25And they were terrified
15:26But the angel
15:27Said to them
15:27Don't be afraid
15:29I bring you
15:30Good news
15:30That will cause
15:32Great joy
15:32For all the people
15:34Today in the town
15:35Of David
15:36A saviour
15:37Has been born to you
15:39He is the Messiah
15:41The Lord
15:42This will be
15:44A sign to you
15:45You will find a baby
15:46Wrapped in cloths
15:47Lying in a manger
15:49And suddenly
15:50A great company
15:51Of heavenly hosts
15:53Appeared with the angel
15:54Praising God
15:56And saying
15:56Glory to God
15:57In the highest heaven
15:59And on earth
16:00Peace to those
16:01On whom
16:02His favour rests
16:03And when the angels
16:05Had left them
16:06And gone into heaven

16:08Said to one another

16:10And see this thing
16:12That has happened
16:13Which the Lord
16:14Has told us about

16:18I think that is
16:20Quite mind-blowing
16:20And this is the bit
16:22That I really love
16:23I mean
16:23It just puts
16:25Shivers up me
16:25Every time I read it
16:27Just suddenly
16:28A great company
16:29Of the heavenly host
16:31Appeared
16:31With the angel
16:32Praising God
16:33And saying
16:34Glory to God
16:35In the highest heaven
16:36And on earth
16:37Peace to those
16:38On whom
16:39His favour rests
16:40Wouldn't that have been
16:42Amazing
16:42To have seen that
16:44And before
16:46We have a quick
16:48Look at that

16:52Is about this place
16:54Bethlehem
16:55Where the child
16:56Was born
16:56Now Bethlehem
16:57You have to understand
16:58Was just this
16:59Little backwater
17:00It was a tiny
17:01Tiny village
17:03A very small village
17:04It was insignificant
17:06In Judea
17:07But this
17:09Is where
17:10Jesus
17:10Was born
17:12And we're going to sing
17:14O little town
17:15Of Bethlehem
17:16O little town
17:31Of Bethlehem
17:33O still we see thee
17:37Lie
17:39Above the deep
17:42And dreamless sleep
17:44The silence
17:46Does go by
17:50Yet in the dark
17:53Shines

17:55The everlasting light

20:38Than just a baby
20:40He was just

20:42And we can see
20:44That God
20:45Is far more
20:46Than what we expect
20:48Because we saw
20:50Even there
20:51Where He's born
20:52In Bethlehem
20:54And in those verses
20:55That we just read
20:57Earlier on
20:58It says that
20:59Caesar decided
21:00Now he decided
21:02One day
21:03That
21:04A census
21:05Should be taken
21:07Of everybody
21:07Now
21:08The Jews
21:10Were under
21:10Roman occupation
21:12At the time
21:13So the Romans
21:14Were in command
21:16There
21:16So Caesar
21:17Was over them
21:18And when he said
21:19Everybody
21:20Must be counted
21:21And go back
21:22To your own towns
21:23They had to go back
21:25But hang on
21:26What prompted
21:27Caesar
21:28To do that
21:29Just at that time
21:31Why did he decide
21:34Right at that moment
21:35In time
21:36That they
21:37Should
21:38That everybody
21:39Should be counted
21:40That there should be
21:41The census
21:42Exactly at that time
21:44Exactly
21:45When the baby
21:46Was about to be born
21:47Well because of
21:49Other prophecies
21:50About Jesus

22:36Because he was forced
22:37To go up to Bethlehem
22:38Because of this census
22:39And while he was there
22:42And it wasn't a small
22:43Trip to take
22:45From Nazareth
22:46All the way down
22:47To Bethlehem
22:48Do you know
22:49That was over 90 miles
22:51That would have taken
22:53Them a good week
22:54With a pregnant woman
22:56Going slowly
22:57And so on
22:58Even the fastest
22:59You could do it
23:00It said
23:01Was about
23:01Five days
23:03But it would have
23:05Taken them
23:05Six seven days
23:06Easily
23:07And just when she
23:09Got there
23:10They just found
23:11Somewhere
23:11To stay
23:12At exactly
23:13The right time
23:14In the place
23:16Where she was
23:17Meant to be
23:18To fulfill
23:19The prophecy
23:20Written
23:21Seven hundred
23:22And ten years
23:23Before
23:23To fulfill
23:25That Old Testament
23:25Prophecy
23:26Isn't that incredible
23:27I just find
23:29These things
23:29Mind-blowing
23:30Statistically
23:31As we said
23:32They're just
23:33Endless prophecies
23:34Like that
23:35How
23:36How can we
23:39Doubt
23:40These things
23:41And yet
23:41It's easy
23:42To doubt
23:42I suppose
23:43You know
23:44But
23:45There was a prophecy
23:46In Isaiah 9-6
23:47Which speaks
23:48About who
23:49He would be
23:50For to us
23:52A child is born
23:53To us
23:54A son is given
23:55And the government
23:56Will be on his shoulders
23:57And he will be called
23:59Wonderful counselor
24:00Mighty God
24:02Everlasting father
24:03Prince of peace
24:06That was written
24:07Seven hundred and twenty years
24:09By the prophet Isaiah
24:10Seven hundred and twenty years
24:12Before he was born
24:13And there
24:15What we're being told
24:16And what he's clarifying
24:18There
24:18In this verse
24:19Is that the person
24:22Who would be born
24:23This ruler
24:23Who would be born
24:25And the whole government
24:26Would be on his shoulders
24:27Would be called
24:28Wonderful counselor
24:29Mighty God
24:31Why mighty God
24:33Why everlasting father
24:34Because that's who he was
24:36He was the Lord incarnate
24:39He had taken on
24:40The form of man
24:41To come to earth
24:43To pay for the sins
24:45Of his people
24:47Because the people
24:49Couldn't pay
24:50The death penalty
24:51For themselves
24:52For their sins
24:53So he had to come
24:55And take
24:56That death penalty
24:57Upon himself
24:59And pay that
25:00For himself
25:00Absolutely amazing
25:04Prince of peace
25:06I love that term
25:07He's everlasting father
25:09And prince of peace
25:11And that is one of his titles
25:13And you know
25:15Around now
25:16You've heard me
25:17Mention prince of peace
25:19I think four different times
25:21In this
25:22And some of you
25:24Being the genteel types
25:25Of charterage of course
25:27Wouldn't throw things at me
25:28And say come on Paul
25:30Where's this peace
25:31This was
25:32That was
25:332000 years ago
25:34Was supposed to have
25:35Come to the world
25:36Why do you keep
25:37Going on about peace
25:38We can't see peace
25:40There's social
25:41Political
25:42Cultural
25:43Economic
25:44Turmoil
25:45In the world
25:45And you know
25:47On a global
25:49National
25:49And even on our
25:50Personal levels
25:51It's affecting us
25:52All these things
25:53Going on in the world
25:54They're crazy
25:56Where's this peace
25:57That was promised
25:59And you know
26:01God promises
26:03In the bible
26:04Over 400 times
26:06He speaks
26:07Of the peace
26:09In the old
26:10And the new testament
26:11Over 400 times
26:13So clearly
26:14It's something
26:15That he seriously
26:17Wants us to get
26:18To grips with
26:19And I can tell you
26:20It's something
26:21We all need
26:22Whether it's on
26:23Our family levels
26:25Whether it's on
26:26The level of
26:26Our national level
26:28Our government level
26:29Whether it's on
26:30An international level
26:31We're affected
26:33In everything
26:33That's going on
26:34We can't but help
26:35Be affected
26:37And we need
26:39To know the peace
26:40That peace of God
26:42God calls it
26:43My peace
26:44The peace of God
26:45That passes
26:46All understanding
26:48And you know
26:49The reality is
26:51This peace
26:52Of God
26:53In the Hebrew
26:54In the bible
26:55In the original bible
26:57In the Hebrew
26:58It's called
26:59His shalom
27:00Shalom
27:01Is his peace
27:02And the shalom
27:03Means
27:04It doesn't mean
27:05An absence
27:06Of difficulties
27:08An absence
27:09Of conflict
27:10An absence
27:11Of turmoil
27:12And so on
27:13But it means
27:14Being able
27:14To find
27:15Peace
27:16And to know
27:17Peace
27:18In the midst
27:19Of our difficulties
27:20That's the peace
27:23That he has brought us
27:24And everyone
27:25Who knows God
27:26Who knows him
27:28Personally
27:28And hands over
27:30Those troubles
27:31To him
27:32The troubles
27:33May not always
27:34Go away
27:34But that peace
27:36Always
27:37Always
27:37Comes
27:39I love that
27:41The Lord
27:42Gives strength
27:43To his people
27:44The Lord
27:45Blesses his people
27:46With peace
27:47But notice
27:48It's for his
27:49People
27:50We

28:32Where there are
28:33So many people
28:33Saying
28:34Ah yeah
28:34We've been hearing
28:35About that
28:36For 2000 years
28:37That he's coming back
28:38But that doesn't
28:40Mean he's not coming
28:41It took them
28:424000 years
28:44For him to come
28:45In total
28:46That first time
28:47But 2000 years now
28:50And he is
28:51Coming back
28:52Very soon
28:53Let's sing

28:56What we can find
28:57In the midst

38:35He puts us through circumstances
