00:00Five times in two years, former president of Trinidad and Tobago, Anthony Carmona, has been a victim of burglary and
00:09theft, every time at his country home in Separia.
00:13Most recently, it was observed on Friday that most of the cables used to power his Robert Hill estate were
00:21cut and removed from its underground housing.
00:24The cable is underground, so in order to access the cable, they went into the manhole and they cut the
00:32two and three sets of cable that is in the manhole and the approximate length of these cables among over
00:40200 metres of cable.
00:43The estimated value of these cables is in the vicinity of $180,000.
00:47Mr. Carmona says while a caretaker stays on site, the incidents occur whenever he's briefly away, suggesting it's closely monitored.
00:58It always happens after TNTech come with private contractors to see about the problem, the electrical problem.
01:08This particular loss I suffered here took place, the TNTech people came on Tuesday and Friday, and they stole 200
01:24metres of cable wood, over $180,000.
01:27Down there, in fact, similarly, there was an electrical problem last year.
01:31The TNTech people came with these contractors.
01:46He says he's not impugning the integrity of TNTech workers, but believes TNTech needs to do more in-depth evaluations
01:54in relation to contractors, and especially the employees of those contractors.
01:59The former president says he reported the incident to police on Monday, and was told one man was held and
02:06two others escaped on Friday night, having been caught in possession of stolen property and a quantity of cables.
02:14He says he was able to confirm alongside his electrician the cables recovered were from his property.
02:21We need to find out who are the buyers of copper throughout Trinidad and Tobago, because obviously, the copper thief
02:30is, in fact, benefiting from sales to the copper buyer, from the copper buyer.
02:55More than that, he says, focus should be placed on parents to ensure they instill and nurture greater values of
03:05compassion, humanity.
03:10The majority of the people there are decent people, but you have pockets of criminality.
03:16You have young men who have decided, I am going to thief, and I don't care.
03:21Are you trying to tell me that parents, your parents, didn't instill in you values that could keep you on
03:30an even keel?
03:31Because we like to talk about children.
03:34The crisis is in parenting.
