00:44As the Illumination logo pops up, the Minions find themselves getting into their usual shenanigans.
00:50Instead of gearing up for a kart race like in the previous film, the Minions cause mayhem set to a
00:54familiar tune.
00:56It's Yukio Kanioka's Hammer BGM theme from the original Donkey Kong game.
01:08This music could be heard whenever Mario, then known as Jumpman, picked up a hammer, which he used to smash
01:14barrels in his way.
01:16Super Smash Bros. fans will know the theme better from the Hammer Weapon.
01:19It's an item that always has opponents running while you become practically unstoppable.
01:30Peach's Note to Mario
01:31As Peach sets out with Toad to find Rosalina, she leaves a note behind for Mario and company.
01:37Reading the message, we get an homage to the opening of Super Mario 64.
01:41That 30-year-old adventure commenced with Peach's narration, inviting Mario over to her castle for cake.

03:38Bowser offers to do jail time on behalf of the others, but he isn't chained up for long.
03:43The Honey Queen made her debut in the original Super Mario Galaxy and would resurface in the 2010 sequel.

03:53Appearing in the Honey Hive Galaxy and Honey Hop Galaxy, this queen bee is an ally in both games.
03:59Sadly, Mario and Luigi don't stick around long enough in the movie to don their bee suits.

04:15Mario Maker
04:16Wrapping up another adventure, Peach is ready to return to her castle in the Mushroom Kingdom.
04:21Mario and Luigi neglected to tell her, though, that the castle kind of got destroyed in her absence.
04:27Oh, well, the castle, yeah, the castle, uh, it died.
04:31It's nothing they can't rebuild from the ground up, however.
04:34Rosalina conjures a construction hat right out of Super Mario Maker, which allowed players to create their own levels in
04:40the style of various Mario games.

04:44In this film, the montage is executed with 16-bit graphics right out of Super Mario World.
04:49The setup is also similar to the story mode of Super Mario Maker 2, in which the castle is erased
04:55from existence, and Mario must raise the funds to construct another.
05:06Donkey Kong cameo
05:07Despite playing a significant role in the previous film, the Kongs are mostly absent from the Mario Galaxy movie.
05:14Maybe that's because this movie was already pretty crowded, and a Kong spinoff is inevitable anyway.

05:21I love you, D.K.
05:22At least we got a brief Donkey Kong cameo as the newly hatched Yoshi roams through Brooklyn.
05:28During this montage, Yoshi encounters D.K. at a construction site, disturbing the piece just like he did in the
05:341981 arcade classic.
05:36He thankfully hasn't kidnapped Pauline, although considering that she's the mayor, D.K. is still causing a ruckus in her
05:42city.
05:43If only Mario were around to subdue the gorilla.
05:45We suppose they could always call this guy.

05:49He seems to have jumping experience.
05:52Power-ups
05:52Mushrooms and fire flowers were only the beginning.
05:56Yes!
05:59The Mario Galaxy movie breaks out a few power-ups that deserve a lot more love.
06:04Namely, the Frog Suit from Super Mario Bros. 3.
06:07We had to wait until a Mario Mario 2 update for that fan-favorite power-up to make a comeback.
06:12Of course, the Frog Suit shares a few similarities with the Penguin Suit,
06:16which first appeared in New Super Mario Bros. Wii and resurfaces here.
06:20During the film's climax, our heroes break open some question blocks, with each getting a different power-up.
06:25The titular plumber chooses the drill hat from Super Mario Bros. Wonder.
06:30Meanwhile, Luigi picks the cloud power-up, while Yoshi is inflated into a blimp.
06:34Just like in Super Mario Bros. Galaxy 2.
06:45Galaxies.
06:46We may not get to see all of the galaxies from the games, but the film covers quite a few.
06:58Among them is Gateway Galaxy, the first major locale we venture to in the 2007 game that inspired this film.
07:05The movie expands upon Gateway Galaxy, turning it into a hub world with numerous species of characters in transit,
07:11from the piantas we first saw in Mario Sunshine to star bunnies in the Mario Galaxy games.

07:19When the two make their way to Wart's homeworld, they pass by a building with the N64 logo.

08:39Shortly after arriving at Gateway Galaxy,
08:42Toad and Peach take pity on a lost monkey,
08:44who fans will recognize as a Ukiki.
08:46Although these monkeys originated from Yoshi's Island,
08:50they're best remembered for their presence in the Tall Tall Mountain level from Mario 64.
08:54One of these monkeys would infamously steal Mario's hat,
08:57either requiring a player to catch the little thief or go the rest of the game capless.
09:02That said, Toad comes to regret helping Ukiki,
09:05who snatches his backpack.
09:07At least Ukiki doesn't take Toad's mushroom,
09:09especially since there's still some confusion over whether that's a hat or part of his head.
09:14Hey! Get it! A parachute!
09:18Casino characters
09:19Looking for Easter eggs?
09:21Then the casino scene is a jackpot.
09:23This locale serves as a hangout for Wart,
09:25a sleazy frog who wears a crown,
09:27despite apparently not being the king of anything.
09:30What is it with you princesses and getting captured?
09:35He is the leader of the 8-Bit gang, however.
09:38Among the members of Wart's crew are Birdo and Mouser.
09:41All three of these characters were never meant to be part of the Mario universe.
09:45Initially, they were conceived for a Japan-exclusive game called Doki Doki Panic.
09:50When the actual Super Mario Bros. 2 was deemed too difficult for Westerners, though,
09:55Doki Doki got a mushroom makeover.
10:03In the Mario Galaxy movie, Peach uses her trusty umbrella against Mouser Birdo, Wart, and the Ninjies,
10:09who were also foes in Doki Doki Panic.
10:15Pikmin
10:16Heading to the flight deck, Peach and Toad seek out a pilot who can take them to Rosalina.
10:20They encounter what appears to be a massive rocket ship.
10:24Perception is everything, however.
10:26Zooming out, we find that the ship is actually tiny,
10:29and its occupants are even smaller plant-like creatures known as Pikmin.
10:37Although their ship resembles the SS Dolphin,
10:40Captain Olimar is nowhere to be found.
10:42In a way, he's there in spirit,
10:44as it's been said that Olimar's name is an anagram for Mario with an L added.
10:48Olimar also has a partner named Louie,
10:50whose name is suspiciously close to Luigi.
10:59Nintendo Super Scope
11:00The Super Scope light gun was compatible with several Super Nintendo games,
11:05including Yoshi's Safari.
11:06So it's only fitting that Yoshi gets to arm himself with the Super Scope,
11:10which is blue in the film to further distinguish it from a real gun.
11:15The Super Scope also serves a different purpose in the film,
11:18being used to de-age Mario, Luigi, and Toad.
11:21The green dino thus finds himself playing Babysitter,
11:24much like he did in Yoshi's Island.
11:26Thankfully, the Super Scope comes in handy
11:28when Yoshi encounters the T-Rex from Mario Odyssey,
11:31shrinking the realistically rendered beast down.
11:33Is it just us, or does the de-aged T-Rex look like the version of Yoshi
11:37from the live-action Mario movie?
11:39Bowser Jr.'s security system
11:41The character models in the film may be closer to their 3D game counterparts,
11:46but there are several nods to Mario's pixelated roots.
11:49At Peach's birthday party,
11:50there's a piñata modeled after the OG King Koopa in 1985's Super Mario Bros.
12:00Later, when the heroes arrive at the Bowser planet,
12:03Jr. shows his father the state-of-the-art security system that he's set up.
12:15Mario and Peach find themselves running through an obstacle course of moving platforms and lava,
12:20which is standard for any final level.
12:22Through Bowser Jr.'s security screen, though,
12:24Mario, Peach, and their environment are presented in 16-bit fashion.
12:28It all boils down to a confrontation against Bowser armed with an axe on a bridge,
12:32again going back to the classics.
12:34But Bowser is back!
12:36And now you feel my fury!
12:43Ruined Dragon
12:44Bowser Jr. made his debut in Super Mario Sunshine,
12:47armed with a magic paintbrush that allows him to change his appearance.
12:51Leave my mama alone, you bad man!
12:54He can also use the brush to conjure inky enemies for Mario to battle,
12:58although this backfires on Jr. during the climax of the Mario Galaxy movie.
13:02Bowser Jr. summons the Ruined Dragon from Super Mario Odyssey.
13:08This intimidating purple beast caught many players off guard with its detailed design,
13:12standing out from the cartoonier aesthetic we're used to in the Mario games.
13:16The Ruined Dragon's presence is equally jarring here,
13:19showing Bowser and his son what a real giant reptilian monster looks like.
13:23In the name of the Koopas!
13:31At Gateway Galaxy, the characters seek directions from the definitive 80s robot.
13:36Rob, or Robotic Operating Buddy, was an accessory for the Nintendo Entertainment System.
13:41What's it like to play the Nintendo Entertainment System?
13:48While playing with a robotic companion sounds fun,
13:51Rob was only compatible with two games,
13:53Gyromite and Stack Up.
13:55Both were virtually unplayable due in part to Rob's slow maneuvering,
13:59assuming you got him to move at all.
14:01Damn!
14:02Damn!
14:04Rob is just as aggravating in this film,
14:06taking his time to point our heroes in the right direction.
14:09Despite his notorious origins,
14:11Rob would find a second life through the Super Smash Bros. series.
14:15Now, he's a movie star voiced by the film's head of story, Ed Scudder.
14:26Versus Mr. Game & Watch.
14:36Looking to fight fire with fire,
14:38Luigi tries to paint a character that can combat the Bowser family.
14:41The best he can do is a 2D stick figure-like man
14:45whose design is as limited as his animation.
14:47Mr. Game & Watch packs some more powerful punch than you would think,
14:50especially when he breaks out the hammer.
14:58A new generation was introduced to Mr. Game & Watch
15:01when he was made a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Melee.
15:05He's been a fan-favorite fighter ever since.
15:07Mr. Game & Watch's history traces back even further than Mario's, though,
15:11first appearing in the 1980 game Ball.
15:14He's as retro as they come,
15:15but there's no school like old school in our book.

15:23Princess Daisy
15:32Luigi asks Mario to ask Peach if she has a friend for him.
15:35They'll be able to go on a double date soon enough.
15:38In a post-credits scene,
15:40Yukiki tries to pull another theft at Gateway Galaxy.
15:43He once again messes with the wrong princess,
15:45but it isn't Peach this time.
15:47Well, thank you very much,

15:54Daisy traces back to 1989's Super Mario Land on the Game Boy.
15:58She's also technically made it to the big screen before,
16:01being played by Samantha Mathis in the 93 Mario movie.
16:05As much as some like to pretend that film doesn't exist,
16:08it was among the earlier instances of Daisy and Luigi being depicted as an item.
16:12Come on, Daisy, you know how I feel about you, right?
16:17I want to be with you.
16:18The pairing became more common when Daisy made an overdue return in 2000's Mario Tennis.

17:31Peach and Rosalina's Connection
17:33When Princess Rosalina made her 2007 debut in the Mario Galaxy game,
17:38players couldn't help but notice her resemblance to Princess Peach.
17:47This isn't a mere coincidence,
17:48as the developers considered having Peach and Rosalina be related to one another.
17:52The idea didn't make it into the finished game, however.
17:55While Rosalina has continued to appear in various Mario titles,
17:59her connection to Peach has never been officially canonized.
18:03Until now.
18:04In the Super Mario Galaxy movie, Peach at last learns her origins.
18:09Rosalina is her older sister.
18:11Her story begins many years ago,
18:15when she lived on a small planet with her sister, Rosalina.
18:19When danger came to their world,
18:21Rosalina sent Peach to the Mushroom Kingdom,
18:23where she became Toad's princess.
18:25It's taken almost 20 years,
18:27but this long-standing fan theory is finally confirmed as true.
