00:008.40, Alabama, head coach Kalen Abur.
00:05I want to hear from him about why Ty Simpson might be better than Fernando Mendoza.
00:09Because Dan Orlovsky was put on the spot to give an argument and he failed miserably yesterday about that.
00:15Holy potato salad.
00:17Oh my god.
00:19I felt bad.
00:20It was weird.
00:21I felt bad for him.
00:22It was very bizarre.
00:24Remember, before Dan Orlovsky.
00:25That's Lima 101, man.
00:26Before Dan had his rise to prominence over at ESPN and he was trying to get in the media game,
00:33he was coming on a ton on the afternoon show here at the time.
00:38I remember texting Keith, go, Dan's good.
00:40He's going to be doing this at a national level.
00:43And he's done a great job, clearly.
00:46I don't know where that came from yesterday.
00:48I'm sorry.
00:48He's great at breaking down film.
00:50Maybe that's the lane he ought to stay in.
00:52I don't know.
00:53Because anytime he says this stuff, it ends up biting him in the ass and it sounds terrible.
00:57That was embarrassing yesterday.
00:58And then by the end of the day, it seemed like he was just very sad.
01:01Yeah.
01:01I mean, while he posted the kindness to others picture, I'm going, oh god, somebody needs
01:05a hug.
01:05See, that's where you got embraced, Dan.
01:08When you go out on one, just take it from someone who knows.
01:12When you get everybody really fired up and then you feel like, man, they're coming at
01:18me from every end, you triple down, Dan Orlovsky.
01:21You triple down.
01:22Well, it's the John thing.
01:24You weren't here.
01:25But I go, what did John say a couple weeks ago?
01:28And I go, no, no, no, no, no.
01:30Oh, it was the Ty Simpson that the Browns are going to take Ty Simpson because they're
01:33saying nice things to each other.
01:35And we had to Trojan horse him because I'm going, buddy, I'm doing it to you.
01:39Imagine what that guy's going to do to you because that's Lima.
01:42Like, you got to be ready for anything you say, man.
01:45And he said it, and he got called on it, and it did not go over well.
01:50I felt bad.
01:51I felt bad.
01:52Because sometimes, in the heat of the battle, I have been pushed to that position with you.
01:58And, man, you start to feel that floor give out from underneath you.
02:01That feeling sucks.
02:02But, man, I, oh, oh, boy.
02:05I want to ask Kalen DeBoer.
02:07Maybe, I bet he has a better answer than what Dan Orlovsky has about Ty Simpson being better
02:12than Fernando Mendoza.
02:13Maybe he just thinks that Fernando Mendoza is better.
02:14We'll find out coming up at 840 this morning with Kalen DeBoer, the head coach of the Alabama
02:19Crimson Tide.
02:20I told you, I don't mean to say I told you so, but you know what?
02:26I told you so.
02:27Albert Breer, yesterday on Afternoon Drive, what are the chances that Shador starts week
02:32one?
02:33If we ask you right now, what percentage chance would you give Shador to start week one for
02:38the Browns?
02:39What percentage point are you setting?
02:4130, maybe?
02:42I still think Deshaun's going to get a shot.
02:45I look at all the money they've sunk into it.
02:47There's a reason why Deshaun at one point was the 12th overall pick in the draft.
02:53There's a reason why Deshaun was once or twice the highest paid player in all of football.
02:58There is so much demonstrated evidence of Deshaun Watson being a really good NFL quarterback,
03:07and we have none on this, Shador.
03:09So does that mean I think it's likely that Deshaun gets up back up to the level he was
03:13at the end in Houston?
03:15No.
03:15But, I mean, I think even if he got 80% of the way there, that would be a higher
03:20level
03:20than a lot of teams precede the ceiling for Shador Sanders.
03:24I just look at it, and I think to myself, if I've already sunk all that money into Deshaun
03:31Watson, I can't get out of that money for this year.
03:34He's still relatively young for his position.
03:36Don't I owe it to myself to make sure he's not the answer before I let him go off somewhere
03:42else next year, especially when I have a new coaching staff that doesn't have the skeletons
03:48in the closet with him that Stavansky and then that staff had.
03:52Like, what weighed that staff down with him, I think, was the history of going through
03:57the trade together and everything else.
03:58Like, you have none of that now.
04:00There's a chance to kind of get a fresh set of eyes on him.
04:03There's a chance to get a fresh perspective on him.
04:05There's a chance to let him compete for a job.
04:08I've seen Deshaun Watson play at a high level too much to not think that maybe,
04:12could get to a middle-of-the-pack quarterback level.
04:15And I don't know that we've seen that Shadour can do that.
04:18And I might wind up being totally wrong on that.
04:20But I think logically, if I'm the Browns, and this is going to be a transition year anyway,
04:26unless Shadour really shows me a lot more than he showed me last year, I'm probably looking
04:32at this like, I want to make totally sure that we got wrong on Deshaun Watson before
04:36the contract expires.
04:38So this is what I warned everybody about during the season last year.
04:41It's playing out.
04:42Because I agree with Albert about the 30%.
04:44Wow.
04:45I think that, let me explain to you why.
04:48Well, I see his point on the 30%.
04:51Mark that.
04:52I see his point.
04:53I don't necessarily agree.
04:55Because I don't want it to be true.
04:57And I think for a lot of fans, you have to hope, because Nick went on a tangent later
05:02on in the show, and I'll play that later on in the show.
05:04I don't want to do it now.
05:05I'll do it later.
05:06Nick went on a tangent, and he was basically, it sounded like he was begging the Browns
05:10on the radio to not play Deshaun Watson.
05:13And I'll play it for you later on at around 8.20 this morning before Kalen DeBoer joins
05:17us at 8.40.
05:19Because I agree with Nick.
05:21I totally agree with Nick.
05:23Nick, the reasons that I don't agree with why I think it could be 30% that Shador Sanders
05:29ends up starting, I disagree with Albert for the money.
05:32I don't think the Browns, I don't think the Haslams care about the money.
05:35I don't think the Haslams care about, I mean, the guy called, Jimmy called it a mistake
05:39twice in public on a microphone for crying out loud.
05:43So I don't think they care about the money.
05:45I don't think they care about any of the other, the sunk cost, whatever it might be.
05:49I just think you got a new head football coach who's 60 years old.
05:54This is going to be his one chance to be a head coach in the NFL.
05:57I'm not trying to be an ageist, but this guy has been trying to be a head coach in the
06:00NFL for the last 20 years.
06:02This is his one chance to be it.
06:04And if you still had Kevin, hey, this is not an argument to keep Kevin around.
06:09What was the end was the end.
06:10But if they would have kept it going, Kevin went with the flow.
06:13There were a lot of things that I'm sure kept, I know Kevin disagreed with, and he just
06:18went with, and I'm telling you, and that's not great leadership in its own right.
06:21I'll tell you that.
06:21That's not great.
06:22That's not what you want as a Browns fan.
06:24But if you wanted to make sure we were just going to get through this year and, hey, we're
06:27just going to try to make the fans placated as we possibly can, not anger them as much
06:32as we can while we get to 2027, Kevin was your guy.
06:36Now it's Todd Munkin.
06:37Todd Munkin's got one chance to do this.
06:39And if they go out there during OTAs and one guy, the guy who's been at it six years
06:44ago, been an MVP level before, been a pro bowl, all pro level before, been a guy to carry
06:52a franchise before, one guy has all that, and that guy shows that against air because
06:58you're just in t-shirts and shorts and you're doing that, and he ends up being over it.
07:02Don't come after the messenger.
07:04A new head coach is going to do what he thinks is best for the players on that football team.
07:08Todd Munkin, you hear Todd Munkin talk.
07:10Everybody loves Todd Munkin.
07:11Todd Munkin don't give a damn what you and I think, what Bob and Parma thinks.
07:16He doesn't care.
07:17He's going to do what's best for his football team.
07:20And if what he thinks is best for his football team is starting Deshaun Watson week one while
07:25Nick caught a giant slap in the face, Todd Munkin doesn't give a damn.
07:29I'd use a different word if the mics were off.
07:31Yeah, but what happens if Andrew Barry, throughout the interview process and afterwards, because
07:35obviously Deshaun Watson had to come up in those conversations, what if Andrew Barry was
07:41basically like, listen, from an organizational standpoint, we are on the last iteration, the
07:47last year of Deshaun.
07:50So as long as you know that coming in, like he is not somebody that is in our future plans,
07:55to put it mildly, to put it most charitably, then what is your answer if you're Todd Munkin?
08:02Knowing that the organization is tilting the scale here, you have the cheap, young, second
08:07year player, had some flashes, has some skill, let's see, should have had a higher grade than
08:13a fifth round pick.
08:14Okay.
08:15That's the curse of Todd being here.
08:16But the other one is Deshaun Watson.
08:17That's the curse of Todd being here in 2019.
08:20Todd has seen the dysfunction flat out.
08:22Todd, in his eyes, tried to stop this at one point and he wasn't listened to and he
08:28watched this thing go right into the ocean and sink.
08:32And he's talked about it since.
08:33So Todd Munkin, who had a job waiting on him with the New York Giants, Todd Munkin's made
08:39all this money.
08:40He was offered a job or he was going to be offered a job with the New York Giants.
08:44Had this not worked out, he could have got desperate and said anything that he thought the
08:49Browns wanted to hear.
08:50Here, does Todd Munkin sound at all?
08:52Did he sound like that in 2019?
08:53You and I worked together.
08:55You and I were in the building at times.
08:56Okay.
08:57I was in the building a lot more than you.
08:58Todd Munkin's never been a guy to mince words.
09:00Todd Munkin, for better, for worse, has said what he felt is the truth.
09:04So he might've just looked at it.
09:06He might've just said, oh yeah, I'll tell you what you need to hear.
09:09I believe zero chance.
09:10I believe Todd Munkin's going to do what he thinks is best for his football team and he's
09:14going to leave it out there in the field.
09:15So Shador is doing everything he can.
09:17I love that Shador's in the building all the time.
09:19I love that Shador, there is evidence that he is working his ass off, but Deshaun Watson's
09:23working his ass off too.
09:26And if this comes down to who's going to play better on the football field, boy, I hope
09:31it's going to be Shador.
09:32I really hope it's going to be Shador because I don't want to open that can of worms.
09:35I don't want Deshaun Watson to start this season for the Cleveland Bronx.
09:39Let's be on the record and be as clear as possible.
09:41I do not want that to happen.
09:43But you have people lining up on that radio show yesterday and on this station who are
09:48going, yeah, you know, one guy did play at that level.
09:51Hey man, don't come after me.
09:53But I told you, everybody hated Kevin Stefanski.
09:56Kevin Stefanski did not do a good job this year.
09:59This isn't a defense, but had he had stayed and we would have just drifted off again,
10:06you know, he would have went with the flow.
10:07Now you have a guy who has one chance.
10:09Who's always told the truth and damn it.
10:11He's going to do what's true by his football players.
10:13I hope I pray that Shador Sanders plays well enough to take this job in training camp in
10:19OTAs to get to the number one spot in training camp when they really take off, you know,
10:22a quarterback competition is really supposed to be done.
10:25Not whatever that was last year.
