21 March - National evening forecast presented by Tom Morgan.
Transcript
00:00Hello again. After a fine and rather warm spell of weather in recent days, there are signs of quite a
00:06significant change on the way as we move into the early part of next week.
00:10High pressure continues to dominate most of the UK at the moment, but we are now turning our attention towards
00:15the northwest.
00:16We've got this cold front moving down from the northwest as we go through the next 24 hours to bring
00:20a little bit of rain in places, but not much at all.
00:23Then wetter and windier in the north on Monday, and by the time we get to Tuesday, those isobars will
00:28really squeeze together.
00:29So a windier and more unsettled day for many of us.
00:32But by the middle part of the week, we then turn our attention towards the northwest.
00:36We've got much colder Arctic air waiting in the wings out here, and as we go through Tuesday and into
00:41Wednesday in particular, that cold Arctic air will flood southwest across many parts of the UK.
00:45So a real taste of winter once again for many of us, the return to overnight frosts, some patchy ice
00:52and perhaps even some snow in places, particularly in the north.
00:55But back to Saturday evening, and it's a fine end to the day for many parts of England and Wales,
01:00even parts of southern Scotland and northern Ireland as well.
01:03Clear skies overnight, though, will allow temperatures to fall away fairly quickly, so it will turn into a cold night
01:08across England and Wales.
01:09And we will see some patchy fog developing in places, particularly probably across southwest England initially, but also some patches
01:15across the Midlands, Wales, the northeast of England, and perhaps eastern and southeast of England later in the night.
01:22So some poor visibilities if you are driving towards the end of the night, and a fairly widespread frost in
01:28the countryside.
01:28Lows of minus one to minus three degrees, perhaps in the most prone locations.
01:33Further north, though, Scotland and northern Ireland much milder here, the cloud cover really acting like a blanket, so not
01:40any issues with any frost here.
01:41And it will turn quite windy in the northwest of Scotland, but here the wind's coming in from a southwestly
01:47direction, hence lows are around seven degrees there in Stornoway.
01:51Patchy rain as well by the end of the night, and areas of rain will gradually spread their way southwards
01:56across the UK tomorrow.
01:58So early morning mist and fog, taking most of the morning to perhaps clear across the southeast of England, but
02:03here at least there will be some hazy sunshine through much of the day.
02:07Running into thicker cloud, though, for Wales, the Midlands, and northeast England, so some patchy rain off and on through
02:13the afternoon here, though quite trivial amounts for many of us.
02:17And there are much brighter skies following to northern Ireland and most of Scotland by the afternoon.
02:22Here, though, we will see a scattering of showers, mostly in the north and the west, and potentially some pretty
02:27heavy showers here, and turning colder too.
02:30So really, notably colder for Shetland and Orkney, some pretty gusty winds, 40 to 50 mile per hour gusts up
02:36here, and perhaps some hail and some sleet mixing with those showers too.
02:40Further south, though, temperatures once again above average, highs of 13 or 14 degrees quite widely,
02:46and certainly a milder day to come across the very far southeast, with highs several degrees higher than on Saturday.
02:53Now, through tomorrow evening, that band of patchy rain continues to make its way southeastwards across England and Wales,
02:59but decaying to nothing more than a band of very light and intermittent rain and drizzle in places.
03:03Colder, clearer skies further north, so a more widely cold night to come.
03:08Potentially some frost and ice in places as well around by Monday morning.
03:12And there will once again be the chances of some fog patches, probably more likely across more central parts of
03:18the UK,
03:19but pretty much anywhere where we see clear skies there's the potential of the odd fog patch.
03:23As well as that, it could get quite close to freezing in rural areas, so there is the potential for
03:27a little bit of frost here and there.
03:30So for Monday, it's looking like a generally cloudier day compared to of late.
03:34There will be some spells of hazy sunshine developing once the early morning mist and fog has cleared across England
03:40and Wales.
03:40But for Scotland and Northern Ireland, it will turn more generally cloudier here and windier too.
03:45In fact, turning pretty wet and windy for Western Scotland by the afternoon.
03:48Some quite heavy rain arriving here.
03:50So feeling quite unpleasant despite temperatures around average 9 to 11 degrees.
03:55Perhaps in the best of the sunshine further south, once again 14 or 15 degrees,
03:59which is, as I say, a little bit above average for the time of year.
04:03So quite a lot of weather going on in the next few days.
