04:58not just for the internet and social media at its infancy,
05:03but also shows like the real-world Survivor American Idol
05:09were exploding in popularity,
05:12and Tyra Banks wanted to be a part of it.

05:18but she never really made it big.

06:20But the show was not only
06:22about trying to be a model.

06:25when you take a dozen strangers
06:26and make them live together
06:27kind of show.
06:30I went in there so innocent.
06:32I thought I've never been a model before.
06:34I'm just learning.
06:35Who are these fabulous girls
06:36in this world that I want to be a part of?
06:39A lot of them were
06:40just out of high school.
06:41They thought that they would have the chance
06:43to have mentorship under Tyra
06:45and actually move towards
06:46a successful modeling career.
06:49It happened really, really fast.
06:51Here I am in the house.
06:52I live with the girls.
06:5424-7, every day,
06:56really started off with Tyra
06:58showing up when it was time
06:59to do the competition.
07:00And that's when we had an idea
07:03of what the day was going to be like.
07:05So today, you guys are shooting a commercial.
07:07So this is where your stardom is solidified.
07:11What's lovely, it's formulaic,
07:12and we love a formula.
07:13First, there's always like a mini challenge
07:16or some sort of weird test.
07:18You'll be stepping on
07:19and off a moving carousel.
07:25Usually something that
07:27is loosely applied
07:28to the world of modeling.
07:30You're going to have to balance
07:31these items
07:32on top of your head.
07:36And then one of the most defining things
07:39about Top Model
07:41is the makeover episode.
07:44It usually comes around
07:45as a third to fourth episode,
07:47depending.
07:48Tyra comes in and is like,
07:50all right,
07:51basically, you guys all look bad.
07:53I know how to make you look good.
07:57And it did seem like the makeovers
07:59were engineered
07:59to make at least three people cry.

08:03Right now, yeah,

08:05but when they style it,
08:06it's your makeup done,
08:07it's going to be so pretty.

08:15And not because they were good.
08:17They want to see
08:18if you react excessively to stress
08:20to make a good show.
08:22And so in the fasting process,
08:25they asked personality questions
08:26to see whether or not
08:27you are a volatile person.
08:29We have a psychologist
08:31who comes and evaluates them
08:33even before they're chosen.
08:34The psych evaluations were no joke.
08:37I was in a room
08:38for two to four hours.
08:40They would ask,
08:41have you ever thought
08:42I wanted to commit suicide
08:43or hurt somebody?
08:44You hurt yourself.
08:45Are you depressed?
08:46It also shows Tyra,
08:48do we think they can handle
08:49the pressure?
08:51I don't like to cast for conflict.
08:54We just cast strong personalities.
08:58On my psychological evaluations,
09:00one of the questions that they ask
09:02was about my childhood.
09:04It did make me feel uncomfortable,
09:06but then I was like,
09:07well, this is reality TV,
09:09so I shrugged it off as nothing.
09:11The show is pretty transparent
09:13about how it wants to mine
09:16the backstories of its contestants.
09:19Tyra is trying to make a show
09:21that's entertaining,
09:22even if it is a little exploitative.
09:24So what's this about
09:25your relationship with your mom?
09:27They kept trying to pick
09:28and get more information
09:30about my mom.
09:33My mom was my abuser.

09:36that tortured me my whole life.

09:49The show is shocking audiences
09:51by putting not just

17:44look fatter?
17:46What is it like
17:47being the biggest girl?
17:49I realized that
17:50I had been brought
17:52to this show
17:53to be other.
17:55Like,
17:55they were all the ideal.
17:57They were all
17:58what everyone in America,
17:59every woman,
18:00should aspire to look like.
18:01And I was something else.
18:05It just confirmed
18:06every bad thought
18:08that an eating disorder
18:09had already planted
18:09in my head.
18:12There would always be
18:13a plus-size model or two,
18:15and they were kind
18:16of cannon fodder.
18:17It was,
18:19on one hand,
18:20saying,
18:21we want women
18:22of all sizes,
18:23but then when there
18:23were women of all sizes,
18:24treating the women
18:25of different sizes
18:26like sh**.
18:27You know your plus-size.
18:28Suck a gut, baby.
18:29Anything hanging out?
18:30It looks nasty.
18:31They were just
18:33recruiting these women
18:34who weren't
18:35traditional model size
18:36and then throwing
18:37them to the wolves.

18:43I don't think
18:44that you realize
18:45how this whole
18:45modeling thing works.
18:48When she came in,
18:49Sarah was openly
18:50a plus-size model,
18:51but then,
18:53over the course
18:53of filming,
18:54Sarah lost weight,
18:55and that became
18:56a problem.
18:56Lost quite a bit
18:57of weight.
18:58People have said that,
18:59and I haven't been
19:00trying to,
19:01but people keep
19:02mentioning it.
19:03Sarah was told
19:04that you're pretty
19:05despite this thing,
19:07and by virtue
19:08of what production
19:09has you doing,
19:11you lose weight,
19:12and they hold
19:13that against you.
19:14The judges feel
19:15like you, Sarah.
19:16Your place
19:17in the industry
19:17is kind of confusing
19:19right now
19:19because models
19:20are so, so, so skinny
19:21for their plus-size.
19:25I was told
19:25I was too thin
19:26for a plus-size model,
19:28but too fat
19:29to be an America's
19:30next top model.

19:32can't shake up
19:33standards of beauty
19:34while ultimately
19:36crowning the person

20:40every week.
20:45So if you feel
20:46like you're feeling faint,
20:47don't be a hero.

20:49and someone will come
20:50help you.
20:50And I remember
20:53I thought like,
20:54oh my God,
20:54these skinny bitches
20:55can't even stand
20:56for a while,
20:56like, and they're
20:57fainting.
20:57First day,
20:59it was me.
20:59I had to raise my hand

21:04were sleep deprived.

21:41If we didn't follow
21:42the rules,
21:43we would be punished.
21:44They could take away
21:45our books,

21:47So we would have to sit
21:48in silence for hours.

21:53with so many girls
21:54and only one bathroom's

21:57And the rules are

32:25bring us apart.

32:27it's like a
32:27caricature of
32:28existing racist
32:29tropes.
32:30It should be
32:31noted that
32:32so many of
32:32the creatives
32:33working on
32:34Top Model
32:35were people
32:36of color.
32:38Tyra, a
32:39black woman.

32:41an Asian man.
32:43They knew
32:44what they were
32:45doing was
32:47edgy.
32:48But they viewed
32:49it as edgy
32:50and not wrong.
32:53At the time,
32:54because Tyra

32:56African-American
32:57woman and she's
32:58wanting me to
32:58become, to
32:59transport me into
33:00an African-American
33:01woman, I truly
33:02didn't see
33:03anything of it.
33:04None of us
33:04did.
33:05And whatever
33:06Tyra says us
33:07to do, we do.
33:07No one wants
33:08to go home.
33:09As a 19-year-old,
33:11you don't really
33:12have the courage
33:12at that time
33:13to say,
33:14hey, this
33:16is, you know,
33:17isn't politically
33:18correct or, you know,
33:19whatever you may feel.
33:20Because there was
33:21a potential for you
33:21to go home
33:22and for this
33:22whole dream
33:23and opportunity
33:25to just be over.

33:34challenges that
33:34the show did

33:37in some ways
33:38have become a little
33:38bit of a scapegoat

33:42grapple with its own
33:43issues of racism.
33:45It's not so much
33:46that the race swap
33:47itself as a challenge
33:48was inherently
33:49offensive,
33:50although, like,
33:50it's offensive.
33:51The worst thing
33:52about that challenge
33:53was the judging panel
33:55and the ways
33:56that they seem
33:57to understand
33:58racial identity
33:59such that it's
34:00a thing that can
34:01be authentically
34:02performed.

34:31limited idea

34:40weirdly obsessed
34:41with and repulsed
34:43by all things

34:49lower class Black people.

34:56who were coded
34:58in that way.
