00:00it is time for our dallas cowboys news of the day and i wanted to backtrack to something that
00:06we were talking about yesterday we didn't get to dive all the way in on it we were talking about
00:12you know the kind of the ranking of the overall yeah okay okay i that is happening in my headphones
00:21as well thank you for pointing that out all right so we were talking about the rankings of the
00:28teams and their talent levels and everything like that but we didn't go through the strengths and
00:34weaknesses for the cowboys you we just ran out of time and i want to see if these check out
00:39for you
00:40and make sense i think in terms of strengths this will make a lot of sense to a lot of
00:46people espn
00:47said the biggest strength is wide receiver for the cowboys just like it was last year does that feel
00:53like an easy enough strength to accept um absolutely okay uh wide receiver uh if flannoy is
01:00like we were discussing that yesterday right if flannoy use is he uh one of those guys you're kind
01:05of expecting to do to raise his stock and i was like he can solidify his stock he can go
01:10from being this
01:11to being home depot you know just reliable stock right there all the time so like i i absolutely
01:17think that the wide receiver position is your apple product your google whatever it is it's at the top
01:23of the market now on the flip side would it also then make sense to you that the deficiency on
01:29this team or their biggest weakness would be cornerback um oh oh i'm still trying to figure out
01:41your linebacker position kevin okay so i yes i can understand that especially based on how last year
01:47looked yeah uh but i would say it's a coin flip for me still at cornerback and linebacker and i
01:54know
01:54people will say what about edge rusher i think for me you know the linebacker edge rusher thing kind of
01:59that grouping for me goes hand in hand because i i prefer to have two dudes uh that are on
02:05either side
02:05that can do those things edge rush and also play linebacker very flexible kind of kind of guys that
02:12can get to the quarterback but i think you're uh i think you're yes cornerback and linebacker still
02:18to me are the biggest coin flip misses at the moment now we were talking about some of the players
02:22yesterday that could up their up their spot with the team at training camp and we didn't get a chance
02:30to really expand on drew shelton okay so drew shelton the cowboys have taken an offensive lineman in each
02:39of the last six drafts and i realized he was taking 112th overall so it's not like they took him
02:47and
02:47they said hey you're going to be plug and play or anything like that but given the injured nature of
02:55nfl football or more specifically the offensive line or given the questions that we probably have to a
03:02certain extent about our both our right and our left tackle do you see drew shelton as another viable
03:10candidate who could really up his profile or standing in this roster during training camp um no
03:21and i would love for it to happen but i'm going to be very realistic about this one of his
03:28biggest
03:29weaknesses watching him was strength and power uh like he needed to play very strong and sometimes he
03:39just did not he struggled to stay engaged with defenders at the point of attack there were there
03:47are things that kevin at a young age um you just have to physically grow and as a rookie i'm
03:58not going to
03:58put on him you need to make in a four months uh span from the draft to uh to training
04:05camp the physical
04:07uh adjustments to be a stronger player to face guys in the nfl and to face some of the best
04:14edge rushers
04:15in the nfl so kevin i think that i'm going to let this be one of those don't just ease
04:22your way in
04:22but you have a very specific program you need to do to take to make these weaknesses some of your
04:30strengths or just at least baseline type things now i don't know if this text always comes from like
04:37the same group of people or if there's a whole ton of folks saying this do you think that jordan
04:44brooks will be on this team this year because i do not i mean i would be fine with it
04:49it's just
04:51we're at a point where i'm trying here's here's what i think could happen no i don't and somebody
04:56said by training camp i don't think by the end of training camp potential um but i'm kind of just
05:03walked away from this idea because of what they've they've gone and done i mean said you bring a jordan
05:10brooks in and you satisfy your middle linebacker spot you're good there you have winters uh who can
05:17go side to sideline to sideline you're feeling really good there and you have him that's just
05:23kind of manning the middle uh section being a good run defender inside that's good too but kevin i think
05:29that they're going to do everything they can to see if demarvian overshone can be that guy before
05:33they make a decision and if he can stay healthy i think they're going to say he's our guy yeah
05:37even
05:38if he hasn't really truly proven it yet they know the dynamics of what he is as a player and
05:43they want
05:43him to be that guy so i think they're going to let him be that guy every chance they can
05:47and he
05:48also has some position flexibility to go along with it so i don't but if they look at their middle
05:55linebacker spot and by the end of camp are like dude we we don't have it then i can see
06:02them making
06:02a move and that can be that being the target that they go get do you take any fascination in
06:07like
06:08contingency plans that are no longer relevant but still interesting so what i mean by that is
06:14shoddy was on the twins take podcast and he talked about how there was essentially an agreement in
06:23place for him to stay with the cowboys if he wasn't hired as a head coach do things like that
06:31that have already passed this by do they interest you at all are you like hey that's great but you
06:35got
06:35the head coaching job so i don't really care um i mean bobby told us this isn't a contingency plan
06:40but bobby just told us the randy johnson story about the landing on the ball of his foot yeah i
06:45think it's fascinating because if he didn't do that his whole career could be different and he might
06:50have been a photographer a lot earlier in life or maybe he didn't have enough money to buy that
06:55i think so oh yeah him for everybody in seattle loves taking pictures um but so like yes i do
07:02find it
07:02interesting to know kind of the backstory sounds like he kind of just wanted to be around the
07:08cowboys organization he likes the organization yeah uh and maybe that was also one of those things
07:13where he was letting them know early on guys i'm here whether i'm this or not i want to be
07:19part of
07:20what y'all are doing because i like being here and it's going to help me out but man if
07:24y'all make me a
07:24head coach of this thing just imagine my commitment already to this thing so it is interesting okay
07:29all right who do you think would be the most likely dallas cowboy to make their first career
07:37pro bowl i can give you what i have dubbed the four top candidates and then people can be like
07:44those candidates are stupid here are better options which would be hurtful but it's important
07:49for me to learn demarvion overshown tyler booker javante williams i was a little surprised by that
07:57or caleb downs um putting aside pro bowl like doesn't matter just as an yeah yeah i think book
08:05okay yeah demarvion overshown still has a lot to prove to me um and again like the position where
08:13where exactly is his brain right now and figuring out what this position is i think that he's he
08:19dove headfirst into it i think when caleb downs was drafted he was immediately like this is
08:23actually very good for me uh this is good for our defense our defense can actually have some good
08:28solid structure to it i got some dogs behind me that can go run with these are all all good
08:33things
08:33but i think that book's already shown that he's an nfl player like he showed last year i'm a legitimate
08:41nfl player and it was just a little bit of growth that he needed in the mental aspect of it
08:48he already
08:49had the physical prowess for it it was the mental aspect of knowing the game and knowing the nuances
08:53and i think this year that trio in the middle is just going to be so strong he's going to
08:58rock with
08:58it and i want to go back to something else that you just said about demarvion overshown because there
09:02are some people talking about if he has a really good season that you can give him a contract extension
09:07or maybe try to work out a deal before the season starts the idea and he could turn out to
09:13be
09:13awesome the idea of negotiating a contract extension for demarvion overshown unless it's
09:20like unbelievably cheap sounds insane to me before the start of the season yeah like why would you do
09:26that yeah it would have to be a he's presenting you with the greatest deal for the future yeah and
09:32why would he do that when this is his opportunity to cash in sure if he if he has a
09:38good season he
09:38knows the cowboys would love to pay him like his agent knows that too they'd love to pay him
09:44and for him to be the guy because of what they think is the talent kevin somebody said in the
09:49pro
09:49bowl a joke you you mentioned that i just said that well i do have a question though do you
09:55think
09:55that that pro bowl leap to all pro for booker is far away because all pro is a very specific
10:03thing
10:04yeah there are there are so many good guards in this league the pro bowl feels like a logical step
10:10on your way to pro bowl i don't know man that is a good question i don't know what the
10:15difference is
10:16in terms of like years if there's been a study and on average after you make the pro bowl for
10:21the first
10:21time like you're more likely to make the all pro within two years because all pro is special right
10:26that means you had a special special season so look that would be a whole different thing if i was
10:32like who's going to make all pro for the first time this list would get way longer that's why i
10:37wanted to start with uh start with pro bowl and look if tyler booker had a pro bowl caliber season
10:45that would obviously be a feels like a big step in the right direction if he had an all pro
10:49caliber
10:50season he should make the pro bowl you know what was it was it uh how many dudes have not
10:57made the
10:57pro bowl it was uh not was it van der esch who was named all pro in a season that
11:04he didn't make
11:05the pro bowl or something like that and i was like what the hell is this i i thought there
11:10was a season
11:10that he was second team all pro at least 157 incidences since 1950 and that is absolute
11:19man was one of them see and that makes no sense to me because they're both kind of toward the
11:23end of
11:23the year like at least with the all-star game mcduffie it's crazy wow like at least with the
11:29all-star game you see things where you're like hey this person won mvp and they weren't an all-star
11:33and you're like well how the hell did that happen but you're like well at least all-star was about
11:37half the way through the season uh yeah kevin in two in 2018 seven first team all pros were snubbed
11:43by
11:43the pro bowl well and you know people will say it became a joke when it became a joke then
11:52cam hayward jason kelsey andrew whitworth uh harrison smith kevin byard jamal agnew and
11:59and andrew norwell that's amazing that's fat that's hilarious it's because none of those
12:04positions drop out of the pro bowl whereas the skill positions like i don't want to do that
12:08these guys are for real
