00:04I've cut my elbow and I've melted my bar in that shows how much friction there is
00:14the foam did nothing did it
00:25I'm Matt Jones I'm a pro freestyle mountain bike rider and I'm working on a
00:29brand new riding video where I'll be attempting three world's first tricks that have never been
00:33done by any rider on the planet and I'm tackling this project with my twin brother Jono and so far
00:39we've found the location down in Devon and we've met the course builder and I've started training
00:44in a way that to be honest I didn't think I'd ever train on a mountain bike but now I'm
00:55thinking
00:55about what it actually takes to create an awesome riding edit and for me it's about more than those
00:59three world's first tricks it's about actually linking them together in a creative way that
01:04showcases my riding style but I'm struggling to figure out exactly how to do that so we've decided
01:11to head up to Scotland to meet Chris Kyle a pro BMX rider who is the master of creativity he
01:17looks so
01:17fluid on a bike and I think any time up there with him is going to be valuable but there's
01:22one trick
01:22that I've got kind of bouncing around in my head that isn't really the world's first but it's it's a
01:27really creative line that I want to get in this video using a wall ride but kind of we'll get
01:32to
01:32that later hopefully because I think any time I can spend riding with him is going to help me so
01:37much
01:37to just specify the way in which I'm going to link this video together to really set it off
01:48I feel like training's going pretty well then you just like the swimming pool I want to go back
01:52there yeah you love that you didn't run off a five meter board with a bike
02:00all good where are we actually planning on meeting Chris then his second home which is yeah unit 23
02:11skate park massive skate park apparently it is insane there's infinite lines if you've got that vision for
02:20I guess creativity I think that's the only way you stay in the game is being creative I'm excited
02:26because his project he did kaleidoscope exactly what I was going to say yeah when that edit came
02:32out it blew everyone's minds because he rode features in a way that was different but also
02:38was unexpected yeah and that's what you want to try and portray in your thing so not prescribed tricks
02:44it's more about the way that you ride it and the options that you have in your head that the
02:48viewer might not potentially see yeah so if we can take anything from this trip it's going to be for
02:54you watching an absolute BMX masterclass but for me it will be how can you get from point A to
03:01point B
03:01on a bike in the most creative fashion if you can take something from it to work out cool for
03:07your
03:07project yeah work out good for you because we'll go to the mountains no doubt yes we will
03:27yeah good to see you man good stuff good stuff well yeah welcome to unit 23 it's got everything you
03:33need from rails to big balls to jump boxes to whatever you're home from home yeah yeah pretty
03:38much every single day I'm in here I'm keen just have a like a cool session at your local and
03:43see
03:43the way you ride because I've got my teeth into this mountain bike project where I want to kind
03:48of bend the rules a bit and come up with some creative lines and link some big tricks together
03:52so and I feel like there's no better person that I've ever met yeah cheers for mine the same ramps
03:57day
03:57in day out hey let's try and see what we can get stuck in it I've got this idea which
04:03is I want to
04:04have a wall ride built into a hill okay and rather than ride it how we know which is on
04:10our tires yeah jump
04:11into it on my shoulder and slide round it it's still upright what doubt how does that get that
04:18it's mental man I'll have a drop out of it no it's something I've seen you do on flat ground
04:22yeah but
04:22not right no not round down around a curve not around a curveball mate no I think we should ride
04:26around there's we could look at everything all day but yeah let's get warmed up play have a look at
04:30that
04:52I can't describe how hard that is to land that precisely on a bike it's nuts
05:13I think Matt's feeling a bit weird at the moment he sort of watches Chris do something and then
05:17suddenly Chris does something massive and he's like oh okay and then I'll sort of go and look at
05:24that Chris to do something else and it's just like level on level on level it's hard to get
05:30used to people usually come up and ride it for like a week your day's not enough yeah yeah
05:37T-shirt on there things are heating up yes
05:50no way
06:16That's why coming up with creative lines is such a process like Chris has had to
06:20explain to me a few different details to do one jump but Chris does that every
06:25second linking it together looking for the next thing that's a real process
06:28that doesn't get achieved in a morning
06:33two hours in I've got a line that consists of two things between us we've
06:39given a pretty good example of what a wall ride is looming over me is the the
06:44idea to do it not on your tires but on your body your body looking at this wall
06:50ride for me in this whole skatepark it's the best feature here the best scenario
06:55the best spot for it but it's far from perfect because when it comes to
06:58building this in Devon I know that it's going to be better if the walls vertical
07:02whereas this one leans I know that it's going to be better if there's like soft
07:07grass underneath not a metal coping that runs all the way around so at no point
07:12can I slide down while that's there because it's going to smash my hip smash
07:16my elbow smash my shoulder so I've got to get from the start all the way around
07:20to here and there's no way I'm going to ride out of it it's just going to be to
07:25get into that shoulder slide position and feel it out we're talking about
07:29safety here you'd be pleased to know Chris has suggested shoving foam down my
07:33hoodie down my trousers pretty genius
07:59that hurt so much first go the foam did nothing did it
08:05it slowed me down I'm going to get rid of it
08:09I think that's going to work I smoke my elbow
08:13I'll tell you what doesn't hurt though Chris my hip
08:17I was extremely nervous for that one because it's a big unknown
08:19it's unnatural to tip the wrong way on a bike and hit
08:23it's a crash isn't it it's like a controlled crash
08:25it's quite sore though like I cut my elbow and I've melted my bar end that shows how
08:29much friction there is around the wall
08:32when it comes to building this we'll come up with a way of smoothing it maybe
08:35even varnishing the wood you could fly around it then there's a lot going
08:39through his head and it's really stuff that he can't really call upon it's not
08:42his usual go-to repertoire of tricks if you like so yeah sort of unproven ground
08:48and we're going to give it another go
09:02it's just figuring it out I mean no one's ever really done anything like it so it's trying to figure
09:06out is it even possible or is it going to work do you know what I mean but I reckon
09:09it is I'm confident Matt he's got it
09:30I think that's what you need to be like yeah that's what I went back yeah I reckon that that's
09:35fully it funny how a crash can actually be a success isn't it
09:38riding with Chris has been really important for this to actually start to figure out this jumping onto my shoulder
09:44realizing that you can slide Chris suggesting it looks like it's going to work
09:49I reckon it is I fully reckon like you surprised me when you first said about doing that in my
09:53head I couldn't picture it but after seeing you try it three times and it worked you got right round
09:57it I know for a
09:58fact that it's possible and you are going to make it happen you ride a lot of mountain bikes now
10:03yeah a little bit yeah getting into it Jono hasn't shut up about coming up to Scotland yeah so I
10:07think we should go somewhere nearby and ride our proper big bikes and get muddy
10:11Keen let's do it then boys let's do it see you up there looking forward to getting out but yeah
10:15I'll catch you boys up here
10:26well you can tell from the weather we're still very much in the heart of Scotland and after a really
10:31good day yesterday at the skate park I'm super happy with the trick with the project and the progression but
10:36today has got nothing to do with training or the project it's just about having fun on our bike so
10:42the boys Chris don't know they're tinkering behind me we've come to one of the most famous trails
10:46in the whole of Scotland in the whole of Scotland which I've never been to but Jono's raced at Chris
10:51loves it here so we're just going to get get really muddy and wet today and have a lot of
10:55fun on our bikes
11:04what's in an Ethan all about then it's it's really cool really cool proper downhill venue it's just so fast
11:11in the trees it's always quite tight in the trees like rushing past here I've never been here in the
11:15snow like this
11:16you must have ridden here a few times a few years ago now but came here once pedaled up a
11:21couple times you pedaled up yeah
11:23fair play and I think that's why I've not been back yeah I wouldn't play more
11:28do you enjoy mountain biking I love it mate it's like a breath of fresh air to be honest it's
11:33still kind of like BMX but it's like learning it all over again because it's so much harder to manoeuvre
11:38the big bike around
11:38yeah yeah and it's snowing as well yeah yeah everything's against us it's a nice part of the world though
11:46through all the hundred meters I can see through the blizzard
11:55so we've made it up to the trailhead at the top of Ineleven and look at the conditions we've got
11:59ice and deep snow which is new for me and Jono really we don't get this style of riding ever
12:04down south and Chris being from the skate park I can't imagine how he's feeling
12:10terrified it is deep it's a lot deeper than what I thought it was going to be so yeah it's
12:14going to be interesting
12:18oh it's like it is literally ice it's not even like ice
12:25this is not how I've ridden it before
12:39oh no
12:40oh no
12:41oh no
12:41oh no
12:41oh no
12:43my hand
12:50high line
12:51yeah boy
13:02Scotland man
13:30oh my fingers man
13:32that was a crazy ride the conditions were just all over the place it was snow
13:37then sun then rain then ice it was ridiculous skidding on ice and over routes into turns is
13:42hard work but uh hearing kind of the guys behind whooping and hollering made it really cool so
13:48scotland's been great inner leaf has been really cool and riding with chris has been inspiring
13:54and useful but now i've got these these three tricks looming overhead we've put them to one
13:59side for this trip but i need to get back to it i need to get into training and we
14:04need to make this
14:04happen
