00:00You can't skinny dip.
00:01I can.
00:02Four sets of holiday hosts.
00:05Look forward to this tonight.
00:07Check in to each other's places.
00:09Good morning.
00:09How are we doing?
00:10And suss out one another.
00:12We're actually fourth generation farmers.
00:14Very good. I didn't see you as that.
00:16Models are seeing you as that.
00:17Models.
00:20Today, things aren't squeaky clean.
00:23The book with us back.
00:24I don't know what that is.
00:26As they battle.
00:27How are you guys feeling about payment day?
00:29Payment day will be interesting, I'm sure.
00:32To be named best value for money.
00:34Hands up. I must have missed them.
00:36But yeah, I spend half my day chasing hairs round.
00:45The final visit of the week is to Penrith in Cumbria
00:48and Brooklyn's guest house.
00:50Owned by Sue Grundy.
00:52A host who's the job lot.
00:54Since I've had this place, I've learnt to do all sorts of things
00:57from pointing up flagstones to little plumbing jobs.
01:02You know, I don't need a man.
01:03I can do it myself.
01:05Guests looking for some alone time
01:07can choose from one of eight rooms for up to £154 a night,
01:12including a pre-ordered breakfast.
01:14And for Sue, they don't make them like they used to.
01:17It's a lovely Victorian townhouse, charming, elegant.
01:22It's a bit of a step back in time.
01:25It's full of lovely antiques and plush furnishings
01:30and sweeping wooden staircase.
01:33You know, it just exudes, you know, loveliness.
01:37And this host thinks the devil's in the detail.
01:40I think my offering is good.
01:42You've got lovely coffee machines
01:44and there's loads of little touches in the bathroom,
01:47toothbrushes and such,
01:48and nice plush, fluffy robes.
01:51Just everything you'd need.
01:52Rooms are gorgeous as well.
01:54They are lovely.
01:55About to arrive are today's first guests.
01:58Oh, look at the space hopper.
02:00I used to love a space hopper.
02:01Used it as well.
02:02Boing, boing, boing.
02:06Bouncing off the walls are mother and daughter duo
02:09Fiona Livingstone and Melissa Harrison
02:11of the courtyard in Falkirk in the Forth Valley.
02:15On the last visit during the evening's drinks,
02:18Sue told an age-old tale.
02:20It's vintage.
02:22It's like going back in time about 100 years.
02:25Is there electricity, sir?
02:26Yeah, you've got electricity.
02:28A built-in toilet.
02:29Yeah, yeah, you've got a built-in toilet.
02:30And today, Melissa and Fiona are expecting anything
02:34but the same old story.
02:36I'm not really sure what vintage means,
02:38if I'm totally honest.
02:40Vintage, well, obviously it means a mixture of older styles.
02:46It's not modern.
02:47Which would be nice.
02:48Well, yeah.
02:49Because there's nothing worse than an older style property
02:52that looks like...
02:53Yeah, modern.
02:54Yeah, I agree.
02:56Beautiful.
02:57It is beautiful.
02:58Very Victorian.
03:00Oldy-worldy.
03:01Hmm.
03:01Let's go in.
03:02Good morning.
03:04Good morning.
03:04Welcome to Pluckclins.
03:05You guys are staying in the Ullswater suite tonight
03:08and it's £154.
03:09That includes breakfast.
03:11Here are your keys.
03:13Have a lovely seat.
03:13Thank you very much.
03:18Oh, wow.
03:19Very in keeping with the property.
03:21Very flamboyant.
03:22Is that a nice word for that?
03:24As Melissa and Fiona digest the dictionary,
03:27today's next guests have their heads in the clouds.
03:31That weather reminds me of our last holidays we went to.
03:33It's absolutely amazing and quite unusual for...
03:37In England?
03:38We're in England, yeah.
03:40Yeah, I don't think we drove that far.
03:43Heading south, our couple Cliff and Monica Clark,
03:47owners of Finn Village in Croftemy near Loch Lomond.
03:51Earlier in the week over drinks, Sue served her CV.
03:55Before I was in retail, my kids have grown up and have moved away,
03:59so this kind of suits me because I like looking after people
04:04and it brings out my mumsy side.
04:06So today, Cliff and Monica expect a hostess with the mostest.
04:11Her background isn't hospitality,
04:14but obviously she's certainly a woman-friendly person,
04:16but it's one thing to just be woman-friendly
04:20and it's another thing to obviously bring complete strangers into your house.
04:25Good morning, guys.
04:27Good morning, Sue.
04:27Welcome to Brooklyn's.
04:29You'll be staying in the Windermere Suite.
04:31That is a cost of £154.
04:34There are your keys, guys, and enjoy your stay.
04:40Oh, wow, poster bed.
04:42Oh, wow.
04:43I love it here.
04:45With Cliff and Monica bedding in,
04:47today's next guests are on the final countdown.
04:50Right, here we go.
04:52Last visit.
04:53Let's do it.
04:54Heading for the finish line are farmers John and Andrew Picken,
04:59owners of Domes by the Sea in Kirkabrie in Dumfries and Galloway.
05:03Earlier in the week,
05:04when the boys went to Cliff and Monica's place...
05:07Good morning, Andrew.
05:08How are we doing?
05:08Good morning, John.
05:09...they didn't feel the call of nature.
05:11I don't know why they felt the need to fill this room with fake nature.
05:15I really dislike it.
05:17...which naturally led to a low score.
05:19How were the facilities?
05:21I think we're all going to have to go quite low here.
05:24Three.
05:25Three.
05:26This is incredible.
05:29So when it came to John and Andrew's visit...
05:31Let's see our hot tub.
05:33...Cliff and Monica bared all.
05:35Not covered.
05:36Obviously, you cannot use outside area in the rain.
05:39...which meant some naked truth.
05:40How were the facilities?
05:42I think five for a reasonable score.
05:45Five.
05:46That's savage.
05:46And today, John and Andrew are ruminating on the review.
05:51I think Cliff and Monica's views on glamping, I think,
05:53are just completely different.
05:55Just different tastes, which is fine.
05:57Yeah, we scored them low as well for the identical reasoning,
06:01so it's just two completely different opinions on the exact same thing.
06:06How you doing?
06:07Good morning, guys.
06:08Good to see you.
06:08Welcome to Brooklands.
06:10You are in the Bath and Thwitt suite.
06:13It's £154 and enjoy your stick.
06:16Thank you very much.
06:20I like it.
06:20I like the colour scheme.
06:21Yeah, this is nice.
06:23With the hosts out of the way,
06:25the guests can see if Brooklands guest house deserves a full house.
06:29It doesn't smell dusty or anything in here.
06:32It smells extremely clean.
06:33Let's inspect our little coffee station.
06:37Immaculately clean.
06:38If she's decorated herself,
06:39she's clearly got a very, very good eye for that.
06:41Yeah, it has a kind of classy feel about it.
06:43It's not too much on the eye either.
06:46Very clean inside.
06:49Beautiful Victorian room.
06:50Mm.
06:51Is a coffee machine necessary in the fridge?
06:54It does look a bit odd.
06:56I think it kind of takes it away from the lovely furniture.
06:59Yeah.
07:00Better test it out.
07:01That's proper inspection.
07:02Okay, I mean, it looks pretty clean up here.
07:06Lovely and clean.
07:08It's nice.
07:09More modern in Europe too.
07:11Big fan of a wide flathead shower.
07:14So that'll be getting used.
07:15Mm-hmm.
07:17Wow.
07:17I like the idea that she thought of toothbrush.
07:20Shower can.
07:21So in here.
07:22So this is cabinet full of surprises.
07:25Shares have to be like.
07:26Oh, wow.
07:27Oh, there's a lot.
07:28It's like somebody's came in and had a shave before we go.
07:30Shave eye.
07:30Yeah, shave eye.
07:32Mm.
07:32Room inspections almost over.
07:34Melissa and Fiona are one foot in the grave.
07:37Oh, my goodness.
07:38Yes, the view is spectacular.
07:40I wonder if any previous owners are there.
07:43For Cliff and Monica, it's Rubber Dub Dub.
07:46I don't think you're going to get any water.
07:48I don't think I'm going to.
07:49Only your toes.
07:50One, two, three, sure.
07:52And John and Andrew duel for the divan.
07:55Yes.
07:57That's your bed over there, wee man.
07:59Oh.
08:00No, it's decent enough size.
08:03I'm going to get this comfy.
08:07Penrith is located on the eastern edge of the Lake District,
08:11where sheep outnumber people.
08:13And today, Sue's hoping her guests will have a field day
08:16as they head to Dale Main Manor House
08:19for an afternoon of marmalade tasting.
08:22Oh, marmalade.
08:24I love marmalade.
08:26The manor has hosted a worldwide marmalade competition since 2005
08:31and hoping everyone will preserve the moment...
08:34Nice to see you.
08:36..is guide Jane.
08:37Each year, we receive about 3,000 jars from all over the world.
08:41Wow.
08:41So this is our most popular marmalade.
08:43This is Jane's marmalade, named after Jane Hazel McCosh,
08:46the lady of the house, and it's her favourite recipe.
08:49Great. Can't wait. Looking forward to it.
08:51Help yourself to a spoon and see what you think.
08:55Come to Mama.
08:57It's got a real tang, hasn't it?
08:58It really has, yeah.
09:00It reminds me of freshly mowed meadows.
09:04I think it's the best marmalade I've ever tried, to be honest.
09:07Wow, here we go.
09:09The marmalade tasting was awesome.
09:11I loved the flavours.
09:13I really enjoyed it, yes.
09:15It's really tasty.
09:16I'm going to hit all that.
09:18Monica woofed it, didn't she?
09:20Yeah, I'm going to put it in my pocket and save it for later.
09:22She was right in there.
09:23She was right hungry.
09:24Yeah, she was.
09:25With the guests not in a jam, they get stuck into the second sample.
09:30I'd now like you to taste another of the Dale Maine marmalades,
09:33but there is another ingredient.
09:35Have a taste and see if you can work out which is the added ingredient we added into this.
09:41Any guesses?
09:42Is it ginger?
09:44It's not ginger.
09:45It's not rhubarb, is it?
09:46Sue, it is.
09:48Get in.
09:50Have you always had a good palate, Sue?
09:52Well, you'll find out in the morning.
09:56Mmm, interesting.
09:57Sue says she's got quite a good palate.
09:59Breakfast will be very good, I think.
10:00I'm looking forward to it.
10:01I'm hoping she can deliver.
10:04Tastebud's tantalised.
10:04It's off to the terrace for afternoon tea and scones.
10:08So the debate is, is it jam first or is it cream?
10:12So I'd go cream, then jam, but I'm going to go marmalade today, I think.
10:15Very good.
10:16Can we just get a spring for the jars, please?
10:19LAUGHTER
10:21As everyone tucks in, Sue has a bittersweet question.
10:25How are you guys feeling about payment day?
10:27Payment day will be interesting, I'm sure.
10:30Yeah, I think for us, obviously, just to clear some things up,
10:33there's some things a bit vague,
10:34so obviously just get more detail in the information.
10:38It's good to see everyone's thoughts and, yeah.
10:42John and Andrew didn't say too much,
10:44so I'm not sure what their thoughts are.
10:46Maybe it might have something to do with yesterday, with our scoring.
10:50Here's to hearing the feedback and taking all our businesses forward.
10:54Chin-chin.
10:54Chin-chin.
10:56Regarding payment day, Cliff and Monica want the most answers.
11:00I feel like our position and their position
11:02is just polar opposites.
11:04Neither's right, neither's wrong.
11:06Having spilt the tea on payment day,
11:08Melissa and Fiona have an appetite for answers.
11:12Payment day conversations were a bit prickly,
11:15but I'm just hoping we can have a nice drinks tonight with Sue
11:18and ask a few questions, cos I've got a few.
11:21Definitely.
11:27The final visit of the week is to Penrith in Cumbria
11:31and Brookland's guest house,
11:32where guests Melissa and Fiona are soaking it all in.
11:36Let's see if you look at the bottom of the spa.
11:38I don't know what that is.
11:40Tonight, host Sue has invited the guests for a drink in her dining room.
11:45Cheers.
11:45Cheers.
11:47And as everyone tries their tipples, Fiona gets down to business.
11:51Are you everything in the house?
11:53Are you the cook, the cleaner, the bottle washer?
11:55Pretty much.
11:56Yeah, I've got Dot.
11:57You'll meet Dot in the morning that she helps me out
12:00when I'm really busy, but yeah, I do it all.
12:02I'm a maintenance man, I'm a gardener, I'm a cook, cleaner, chef.
12:09You know, I like it.
12:10I like looking after people,
12:11and I kind of miss that from the kids, you know, growing up.
12:15I'll send you mine.
12:16Here you go!
12:19I'll let her.
12:20Sue doing everything herself.
12:22She obviously loves it and is very attached to it.
12:25Yeah, kudos to her for doing it and doing such a great job.
12:28Sue sassed.
12:29Fiona digs deeper.
12:31Obviously, Sue, you went from one industry to another,
12:34which was extremely brave.
12:35How do you feel you've coped with that?
12:38I think I've talked to it like a duck to water.
12:40The only downside to it that I've found,
12:42it can be a little bit tie-in.
12:44You know, it is hard work and it, you know, it's graft.
12:47Especially when you're in a smaller business like ours.
12:50Yeah.
12:50It's important that, you know, things remain balanced and fun,
12:54cos life's tough and this industry's tough.
12:57I'm going to sound like Winston Churchill.
12:59LAUGHTER
13:01We will fight them on the beaches to get our customers in.
13:05LAUGHTER
13:06I think for Sue, it's definitely a brave choice.
13:10She's got the heart, she's got the passion.
13:11She feels it, yeah.
13:13Yeah, and I feel as it stands now, I think actually she's the one to beat.
13:17With the week coming to an end, the group get a flavour of their first impressions.
13:22When I first was introduced to Sue, you come across as a lovely person.
13:27You smile with your eyes and, as my mum told me, it's a pause of your soul.
13:30Oh, thank you.
13:31I did find that Andrew and John are a little bit guarded and couldn't quite read you very well.
13:37Yeah, it's the same as Sue.
13:38Yeah, I think probably in here we are the youngest and the most inexperienced.
13:43Age doesn't make you the less experienced.
13:46I mean, I would say in terms of filming, you've had a lot of experience, which is why it's brave
13:50that you're doing what you're doing,
13:51cos obviously a lot of the time you're interacting more with dealing with animals,
13:55so a lot of the time it's probably not so much talking, you're off in the field and so you're
14:00interacting with people is probably a lot less.
14:04We don't big ourselves up.
14:05Like, we thought at the start you guys came in very sure of yourself.
14:08I feel sometimes less is more.
14:11I think he's probably got a skewed view of us as farmers.
14:14To say something like that's quite brazen, whereas we wouldn't have said you spend your time just talking at people.
14:20Sue said the same thing.
14:21We kind of all felt that obviously with John and Andrew, they seemed a bit shy.
14:25And drawn back.
14:27With drinks done, it's off to their rooms.
14:30I'm pretty tired.
14:31Yeah, the bed's comfy and the room's nice and chilled, so it should be a good night's sleep.
14:35Good night.
14:35Good night.
14:40It's a new day in Penrith.
14:42I slept a bit well last night.
14:45Yeah, the bed's very comfortable.
14:47I'd like to get a full post of bed.
14:49We'll put a mirror right here.
14:49Good night.
14:52But in their room, John and Andrew aren't showering praise.
14:56I'm afraid your shower's not going to be as good as you were hoping.
14:59I've just had one and the pressure's pretty poor.
15:01And their bedroom door's an open and shut case.
15:04The door, it slams quite a bit when you shut it.
15:07Yeah, she may be just doing a wee stopper.
15:10Downstairs, Sue's joined by casual staff Dot, who'll be looking after front of house, while
15:16she preps the breakfast pre-orders.
15:18I put my heart and soul into what I offer for breakfast, so yeah, I am fairly proud and
15:23I love it.
15:24I do like to cook.
15:25Good morning.
15:26How are you guys?
15:27Good.
15:27Fine, thank you.
15:28Are you looking forward to our breakfast?
15:30Yes.
15:31Yeah, I'm starving, so I'm really looking forward to it.
15:34Well, we know she's got a good palate, as you know.
15:36Yeah, I can promise you a good breakfast.
15:37Good morning, guys.
15:38Good morning.
15:39And after a quick greeting...
15:41How did you sleep?
15:42Yeah, very good.
15:44We'll get started with your breakfast.
15:45Perfect.
15:47Sue cracks on in the kitchen.
15:49So them oats have been soaking in oat milk all night.
15:52But she's the one on the menu.
15:54How have you guys all found Sue as a host so far?
15:57Excellent.
15:57She's been an amazing host.
15:59She's, like, naturally just destined for this.
16:02She's got a warm feeling to the house.
16:04Just to get stuck at home.
16:06Yeah, I'd agree.
16:07For me, this feels more than a business, Sue.
16:08This is Sue's life.
16:10She's putting everything into it, and it's, yeah, it's brilliant.
16:14The way she runs her business is just terrific.
16:17She's so on it.
16:17She's so organised, and, yeah, it's great to see.
16:20Back in the kitchen, Ricky's ready.
16:23Enjoy it.
16:23It looks yummy.
16:25And pulling loose with the poached egg.
16:27Brilliant, thank you very much.
16:29Oh, lovely.
16:29French toast with you.
16:30Thank you so much.
16:31See what the poached egg's like.
16:33Perfect.
16:34Absolutely nailed that.
16:35Let's see how it look.
16:37Probably a little bit over.
16:38You can do your dipping.
16:39Yeah.
16:40I got a plate full of mushrooms.
16:41I actually love them.
16:43A very healthy breakfast.
16:46It's lovely.
16:48Good.
16:48It looks nice.
16:49This is delicious.
16:50And the fruit's lovely.
16:51I might need to take her home with me.
16:53She's a grand porridge maker.
16:55Yeah, these are class, to be fair.
16:57Quite a big portion as well.
16:58I'm a big boy.
17:00Debatable.
17:04Overall, I mean, the selection's great.
17:07The quality of the food was pretty good.
17:09But unfortunately, my fried egg, I didn't have any yolk to dip.
17:14Oh, she likes dippy.
17:14And I do like dippy yolk.
17:17My sort of bread was a little bit soggy.
17:19It wasn't toasted long enough.
17:21Food mused.
17:22The group have designs on the business.
17:24The decor in this house is incredible.
17:27It's seen with the period of the house, definitely.
17:29This would be the perfect setting for afternoon teas, for a murder mystery.
17:34Rinting out that staircase for photographs.
17:36You know, a family photograph.
17:38Really good idea.
17:39There is definitely a window, obviously, to fill in that period where it can go quiet.
17:43There's such opportunities there, like, but for me, this is murder mystery.
17:47Like, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh.
17:50The breakfast room was very much in keeping with the style of the house.
17:54Beautiful room for breakfast.
17:55It was stunning.
17:56With the sun flooding through the big window, it was lovely, it was.
17:59Breakfast done, the guests head to their rooms to fill out the anonymous feedback forms.
18:04How was your host at Brooklyn's guest house?
18:07Sue was very caring and attentive.
18:10Easy 10 for me. Easy 10, isn't it?
18:12Yeah.
18:13Very warm and welcoming.
18:14No hesitation.
18:16Definite 10.
18:17The bedroom, immaculate.
18:19Residue on bottom of bath.
18:20Lots of hairs on the sink.
18:23We'll go for an eight.
18:24How were the facilities?
18:26I actually loved the decor.
18:27The pressure in the shower was pretty poor.
18:30The other wee point is the bedroom door slams.
18:32It's had gone eight.
18:33Yeah.
18:34The modern twist of the fridge and the coffee machine, it didn't fit in with the vintage style of the
18:41room.
18:42What do you think?
18:43Eight.
18:44Cool.
18:44How did you sleep?
18:47We had a very good night's sleep.
18:48I would score Sue 10.
18:49Yeah, definitely.
18:50How was breakfast?
18:52Beautiful.
18:53Cooked to perfection.
18:54Score?
18:55Definitely a 10.
18:57We definitely appreciated the great selection of food.
19:00I would really prefer if my sordo bread was toasted slightly longer.
19:06Egg.
19:08Lightly overcooked.
19:10Eight.
19:11I'll be happy with it.
19:12Smashed it.
19:13So full marks for me?
19:15Yeah.
19:15Ten.
19:16Time for the big question.
19:18Would you stay here again?
19:19Definitely, yes, for me.
19:20Yes, for me as well.
19:22For me, that's an easy one.
19:23Yeah.
19:24Yeah.
19:24Easy, yes.
19:26Most definitely.
19:27Absolutely.
19:29Now the guests must pay what they think their stay was worth.
19:33Are you happy?
19:34I'm happy.
19:35The cash will be kept secret until the end of the competition.
19:38But for now, Sue can see if Brooklyn's had her guests babbling.
19:43How are your hosts at Brooklyn's guest house?
19:46A 10?
19:46Yes.
19:47Attentive?
19:48Caring?
19:49Yeah, I am.
19:49I do care.
19:50And it's nice to be recognised for that.
19:52How are the facilities?
19:53Eight out of ten.
19:54So they love the decor.
19:56I'm really glad.
19:56I do think it's my USP.
19:59And shower pressure, poor.
20:00I am aware of that issue, which is a big expense at the moment.
20:04The bedroom door slams.
20:06I will have a look at the door closer.
20:08How was breakfast?
20:09Oh, look at that.
20:10They've given me a 10.
20:11Oh, that's good.
20:12Smashed it.
20:13That's brilliant.
20:14Thank you very much for a brilliant stay.
20:16Oh, thank you.
20:16Have a safe journey.
20:17Bye.
20:18Let's have a look.
20:19Would they stay here again?
20:21Yes.
20:21Yes.
20:22Yeah, that's good.
20:25Let's have a look.
20:26The next one.
20:28How was your host at Brooklyn's guest house?
20:31A 10.
20:31I'm well happy with that.
20:33Very warm and welcoming.
20:35Yeah.
20:36I think that's what I am.
20:37How did you sleep?
20:39A 10 out of 10.
20:40Rock on.
20:41Had a very good sleep.
20:43That's excellent.
20:44Yeah.
20:44How was the breakfast?
20:45Eight.
20:46A little bit disappointing.
20:48Great food selection, which is good.
20:51Sourdough could have been toasted longer.
20:53Thing is, if you toast it longer, it makes it hard.
20:56So it's personal preference.
20:57Egg slightly overcooked.
20:58Well, that's disappointing to hear.
21:00Thank you for a lovely stay, Sue.
21:02Have a safe journey back.
21:03Bye.
21:04Would you stay here again?
21:06Yes.
21:07Can't ask for more, really, can I?
21:10It's time for the final one.
21:12How clean was Brooklyn's guest house?
21:14An eight.
21:15It's not brilliant, but it's good.
21:18Bedroom immaculate.
21:19That's brilliant.
21:21Residue on bottom of Bath.
21:23Nobody else has mentioned that.
21:24There were a lot of hairs in the sink.
21:26Hands up.
21:27I must have missed them.
21:27But, yeah, I spend half my day chasing hairs round.
21:31So, how were the facilities?
21:33Eight.
21:33A little bit disappointed.
21:34They felt that the coffee machine and the fridge
21:36didn't fit with the vintage style of the room.
21:38At the end of the day, people, that's what they require.
21:41How was breakfast?
21:43A ten.
21:43I'm really happy with that.
21:45Beautiful cooked to perfection.
21:47I couldn't ask for more than that.
21:48Oh, thank you, guys.
21:49Have a lovely stay.
21:50Oh, lovely.
21:50Take care now.
21:51See you soon.
21:52I'm thinking that they're going to stay again,
21:54but who can be sure?
21:55So, let's have a look.
21:57Yes.
21:57Oh, that's three out of three.
21:59Woo!
22:00Yeah, that's brilliant.
22:01I'm really happy.
22:02I want to cry.
22:04I was really pleased with my feedback,
22:06but I do have a couple of questions for everyone.
22:09Next time, the hosts face the final showdown.
22:13So, shall we kick things off?
22:15As bills are paid...
22:16We felt it was just missing that luxury thing,
22:18like the, I mean, just an ironing board.
22:20Scores are settled.
22:22You're going on and on and on,
22:23and we said at the start that we're quite happy
22:25to just draw the line under that.
22:27And a winner announced.
22:29And the winner is...
22:31There's nothing that we said
22:32that they wanted to take on board.
22:34That was a good one.
