00:00I look like an absolute clown.
00:02I'm wearing a gum shield, wet shoes,
00:04and I've got half a bike at a public swimming pool.
00:16I'm Matt Jones, a professional freestyle mountain bike rider,
00:19which is a sport built on creativity
00:21and pushing the boundaries of what's possible on a mountain bike.
00:24In the next few weeks, I'm going to be attempting
00:26three world's first tricks that have never been done before.
00:29In order to be more competitive
00:31and just defy what people think is possible on a bike.
00:35These tricks have never been attempted before.
00:37No one's even thought about them, perhaps.
00:39They're just ideas and visions that exist in my head
00:41and I want to put them down on a bike,
00:44land them on dirt and make it real.
00:46I'm with my twin brother, Jono Jones,
00:47who's going to be along for this entire journey.
00:49What do you think, Jono?
00:50I mean, you've seen me do new tricks before,
00:52but do you think taking on three new tricks at one time
00:55is a bit too much?
00:56You can be honest.
00:56I know you're my brother,
00:57but you can tell me I'm stupid.
00:59Yeah, you're not going to do it.
01:01No.
01:02I love how creative this can be.
01:03Three tricks is a bold claim.
01:06I think I'm excited to see you do it,
01:07but it's going to be a journey.
01:09Have you thought about the tricks at all?
01:10I've thought about them relentlessly, yeah,
01:12but I haven't tried them.
01:14I haven't even found the place to do them.
01:17It's something that I can't even explain
01:20to my twin brother very well,
01:21and we've basically got the same brain.
01:23Today, we're going to ride Woburn Bike Park,
01:25where it all began,
01:26where we discovered bikes,
01:27where we got hooked on doing tricks and going fast.
01:31And that's sort of led us to where I am today.
01:33I wanted to break new ground,
01:35create new tricks that have never been seen in this sport,
01:37which is constantly changing.
01:39People are learning and landing new tricks all the time,
01:42but I want to do three.
01:44So we're going to go for a ride.
01:45We're going to get muddy.
01:46We're going to hit some jumps.
01:47Then we can talk about these tricks.
01:49I'm not going to spill the beans just yet.
01:58I'm a bit nervous.
01:59Probably with me.
02:00Should be.
02:17We've found a couple of flat-out turns,
02:19which is definitely Jono's domain.
02:23Yes.
02:28I'm puffed out.
02:29I just love riding here.
02:34Full suicide.
02:35Get proper sideways.
02:40He does know what he's doing, doesn't he?
02:48I'm going to get him to do that run again,
02:50because I think I've got a little idea.
02:52I might be able to overtake him.
02:54It's not going to be pretty.
03:00Ah!
03:00No!
03:02You're on top of me!
03:09I kind of got stressed out today,
03:10because I thought I was going to come to Oban
03:12and just see the perfect jump.
03:13Yeah.
03:14And I sort of need to explain what I'm...
03:17What are these tricks?
03:18I have no grasp on what you want to do at all.
03:20Okay.
03:20So think back to frames of mind,
03:22the last big project I did.
03:30You remember I did a backflip of a take-off,
03:32landed on a hitching post,
03:34like six foot off the ground,
03:35two feet,
03:36perfectly on a log,
03:37and jumped back off.
03:38I want to do that again.
03:39Okay.
03:40But front flip off of the log after I land.
03:43So flip on, front flip off.
03:45Tell me where in these woods that's possible.
03:47Yeah, I'm with you.
03:48So last time,
03:48we built a feature for that trick.
03:50Me and Kai Forte it was,
03:52who's a BMX legend.
03:54I need a blank canvas,
03:55I need Kai again.
03:56Kai delivered the goods last time with a sick course.
03:59So another trick,
04:00I'm spilling the beans here, as promised.
04:03A bomb drop is hold the grip and the saddle like that.
04:07I want to run off of a drop,
04:09a platform,
04:10holding my bike like that,
04:11but do a gainer,
04:11like a running backflip.
04:13That's never been done.
04:14A couple of three.
04:15Third one.
04:16Yeah.
04:17You've seen me do 720 no handers,
04:19two spins, hands off.
04:20Yeah.
04:20I want to add to that
04:21and put a bar spin on the end.
04:23So I need more time in the air.
04:25I know we need Kai.
04:26It worked so well last time.
04:27He's the man.
04:28He can share my vision.
04:29He'll understand what I want to do
04:31and he can build the course.
04:33And I know down in Devon,
04:34he's got the space to do it.
04:38How are you feeling about seeing what Kai's got to offer?
04:41I know what he's got.
04:42He's got a field,
04:43he's got a good gradient,
04:44a load of speed,
04:44there's space.
04:45But I'm nervous that
04:47I won't find a way that everything can flow together
04:49and exactly link.
04:50Yeah.
04:51Because I'd like to do all these things,
04:54not back to back,
04:54but in a nice flowy mountain bike course
04:56and keep it fun for me to ride,
04:59but at the same time nail these tricks.
05:01So I don't want to have a setup that's almost right.
05:04I want to build a setup with Kai that's perfect.
05:13Here it is.
05:14It's a good size hill.
05:16You could make some massive jumps on that.
05:18Kai's come up trumps.
05:27We made it.
05:28Kai's field.
05:29So this could be the location,
05:31could be the dream spot,
05:32the dream scenario
05:33for everything I'm setting out to achieve.
05:35And this is going to be
05:36quite an in-depth process
05:38and a very important process
05:40to understand
05:41whether we can achieve
05:43the right features,
05:44the right level of speed,
05:45the contour, the ground, everything.
05:47It all has to come together,
05:48all of those key ingredients,
05:50and this could be the very spot.
05:51All right, boy.
05:52Hey, Matt, you all right?
05:53Yeah, good.
05:54How you doing?
05:55Yeah, spot on.
05:56Yeah, good, man.
05:56Nice one.
05:57What do you reckon?
05:58Looks good.
05:59It'd be good just to cover that hill in stuff.
06:01Yeah.
06:01All rideable stuff.
06:03Main focus is three tricks.
06:05Yeah.
06:05720 no-hound to bar spin.
06:06Right, yeah.
06:07Which I think...
06:07I like that you laughed at that one.
06:09Yeah.
06:09I kind of thought it would be this reaction.
06:11Yeah.
06:12Running gainer, holding a bike.
06:13Right on.
06:15That's just...
06:16It sounds ridiculous coming out of my mouth,
06:18but may as well put that at the top of the hill.
06:20Cool way to start.
06:21Right, yeah.
06:22And then we've got the hitching post.
06:23Yeah.
06:24Which you built the last time.
06:25Yeah.
06:25And worked a tree.
06:27This is so different to Woban.
06:28Yeah.
06:28You've got all the space you could want.
06:31It's pure sand, isn't it?
06:32And a lot of speed.
06:33Yeah.
06:33This is pure clay and rock, really.
06:35What should we mark out?
06:36Where the structures are going,
06:37or mostly where the dirt needs to be?
06:39Well, bang one in for the start.
06:40If we're going to come up quite high,
06:42we need to be away from the trees.
06:43That's spot on.
06:44Yeah.
06:44I'll need to get a run up if I'm going to launch myself off the end.
06:47So it probably wants to go back a bit more.
06:48Yeah, but that's fine.
06:49Maybe back a touch.
06:50Yeah.
06:50I've kind of had to sort of step away,
06:52because I've come here and I'm trying to look really confident and optimistic,
06:55especially in front of Kai, who's going to be building this.
06:57I want him to believe that I've got it sussed and I can do this,
07:00but I am worried that I've taken on a lot and it's all going to be going down here.
07:06I just don't want Kai to think I'm too nervous and too unsure,
07:10because he's got to build this.
07:12Yeah, I'm pretty stressed about it all now.
07:14Kai, let's put the hitching post near the bottom.
07:17Yeah.
07:18I want to just be able to focus everything on that last trick.
07:21The platform, we're going to go at the top of the hill.
07:23We're going to make the hill bigger,
07:25visualize where that tree is.
07:26There's just going to be this structure.
07:28Me stood on top with my bike,
07:30****ing myself.
07:31It's been so valuable actually seeing the field,
07:34coming here, putting pegs in the ground.
07:36Everyone just starts diving in with ideas,
07:38and we're going to come away with the coolest place to ride.
07:41It's going to be insane.
07:41Now I've just got to go and figure out
07:43how the hell I'm going to make it work.
07:51What are you thinking about Kai's set up then?
07:53Perfect.
07:54Yeah?
07:55100%.
07:55I was nervous about Kai's field going there,
07:58because it's just a field,
07:59but now talking to him, us walking around,
08:02it's quite clear that it's going to work.
08:04I'm still in the dark,
08:06but I love that you two have got it so sussed in your head.
08:08I'm just excited to see the tricks,
08:10which you haven't started, have you?
08:11No.
08:13It's true actually,
08:14I haven't even physically tried anything.
08:15It's just been all talking about it and visualizing.
08:18First one I want to learn is a running gainer,
08:20so holding my bike, running backflip off of the platform.
08:23Holding the bike.
08:25Exactly.
08:26That's going to be right at the top of the course.
08:28So if it's going to be the first thing on the list,
08:31riding, it may as well be the first thing to train.
08:33Which is tough, because like me and Kai said,
08:36we've got no idea how high the platform needs to be.
08:39And it's a trick that's never been done before.
08:41How are you going to work it out?
08:43You don't need to worry about that,
08:44I've got the perfect spot.
08:47And here it is.
08:48We've come to an indoor diving pool and I've got this.
08:52Half of a bike, which looks so stupid,
08:54I'm quite embarrassed to be here jumping off of a diving board with this.
08:57But actually, this is all I need to figure out the air time it takes
09:01to run with this bike and do a backflip and get on.
09:04I've even got pedals, soft pedals.
09:06Although it's ridiculous, this is actually the perfect environment.
09:09I can land in water on my head upside down
09:11and figure out what it's going to take to build a drop
09:14for this trick to be landed.
09:16Number one.
09:18I think I'm more nervous than he is.
09:26No points.
09:27No points at all for that.
09:31Yes!
09:33That's impressive for try number two.
09:35It's so hard to get everything lined up.
09:37Right foot, left foot, right hand and do a flip
09:41in less than a second.
09:43You're doing good.
09:43Do you want to have a go?
09:44No.
09:45Absolutely not.
09:49I'm going to need to put shoes on,
09:51because the pedal pins are already coming through the cardboard
09:53and, look, I've already cut my heel.
09:56It's not as simple as swinging it in a straight line.
09:58It's miles away.
09:59And then you've got two wheels on there.
10:01Imagine how slow it's going to go.
10:03It's stressful, man.
10:04It's hard.
10:06Maybe this is why no one's done it before.
10:09My girlfriend brought me this.
10:11She doesn't want me to smash my teeth out.
10:13I look like an absolute clown.
10:15I'm wearing a gum shield, wet shoes,
10:17and I've got half a bike at a public swimming pool.
10:24At the moment, he's really struggling to get that sort of spring of the board matching up with the rotation.
10:30Might be easier in real life, but then he's got a hard dirt floor to land on.
10:36It's a mild one.
10:43What a .
10:45Embarrassing, isn't it?
10:47Waste of time.
10:55That was way better.
10:56Ten seconds ago, I was livid.
10:58I was literally screaming under the water because it's not working already,
11:01but I felt like I had grip of the bike then.
11:04It's actually terrifying.
11:05Water's scary.
11:07Shin pads.
11:08The progression of embarrassment just keeps climbing.
11:19The three metres definitely going better than the one.
11:22Everything's a bit more slowed down.
11:24He's got that time to find the pedals and things.
11:25He's doing awesome.
11:26It's cool to see.
11:27That was the one.
11:31I'm not going out enough, which means a diving board can't happen.
11:35I'm going to have to take a run-up and do it from the big one.
11:38It's going to change everything having a run-up, but it could be the best discovery of today.
11:42So here goes.
11:43Oh, man.
11:47That's all.
11:48Yeah, the difference in the impact is massive.
11:52Right, I'm going up again.
11:57All good?
11:58Yeah, I can't take another one of them.
12:00Good start.
12:02It's been a good start to the project.
12:04We've got a location.
12:05We've got a course builder, Kai.
12:06And we've started working on tricks here at the swimming pool.
12:09Which is less risky than what I'm going to have to do, but I'm on the road now.
12:14And Jono's been a second set of eyes for this, and I think it's going to be important moving forward
12:17for him to give that perspective of what I can't see in the moment on the bike.
12:21It is early days, but I know when tyres start hitting the dirt, it's going to get serious, and I'm
12:26excited to see that because I think you can do it.
12:29The next few weeks are going to be way more stressful.
12:31It's going to have to happen for real.
12:33We're going to have to put all of this work into one moment, which is doing it on a jump,
12:38and it's going to be an unreal few weeks.
