00:00for Mary Kay. She's on the Make It Right Call Kyle Wright Hotline and Mary Kay Cabin of the
00:04Cleveland Plain Dealer and Cleveland.com. Hello, Mary Kay. Hello, guys. How you doing?
00:09We're doing wonderful. Jason is in for Anthony today. Jason Lloyd, Lace and Joy, as I want to
00:14call him. He eats breakfast sandwiches in a German-made automobile. He's a pig in every
00:20sense of the word. However, Mary Kay, you are wonderful, and we thank you very much for your
00:24time. You said Andrew Barry aced the assignment to address this offensive line. Take us through,
00:31because that's a strong, acing the assignment is a strong, strong word.
00:35Well, they needed to throw some bodies at this, and they needed to throw some money at it,
00:40and he accomplished that. Now, how it all works out in the end and how all of the pieces fit
00:46together, we'll see how that goes. But it's not easy to land a starting tackle in the NFL,
00:52a veteran tackle. So he did accomplish that with the trade for Titus. And then just all
00:59of the other pieces. I mean, he got starters all across the board, and there will be some
01:04competition for some spots. But if they had to play a game tomorrow, they could field a
01:09pretty decent offensive line.
01:11How has what they've done dictate what they're going to do at six? Or did they already know,
01:20and that is what allowed them to set the course? I don't know if I asked that properly. You see
01:24what I'm saying?
01:25Yeah, no, I know exactly what you're saying. And I don't think it really changes the strategy too
01:29much. I do think that they will still look very strongly at left tackles or tackles in the draft.
01:36And you have to do that. You have to restock those positions. So they don't really necessarily have
01:43their starting left tackle of the future just yet, unless DeJuan Jones comes back really healthy and
01:49proves that he can be that guy. So I think they will look at, you know, Spencer Fano and
01:55Freedling and all the guys that we ended up talking to at the combine.
01:59Mary Kay Cabot joining us here on the Make It Right called Kyle Wright Hotline. What do all these
02:03deals mean maybe for the future of Joel Batonio in a bronze uniform?
02:09Well, it seems to suggest that Joel might not be coming back, but the book has not been closed yet
02:16on that. They're giving him the time that he needs. Maybe he's already decided he's not coming
02:21back. That's what it seemed like as they just kept signing one guy after another. But you just
02:27never know. When you put a little bit of time and distance between your aches and pains and the end
02:31of the season, sometimes you decide that maybe you can coax one more season out of your body. So we'll
02:38have to see how it goes. They really could use him for a number of reasons, including trying to be
02:44the glue that can hold together a completely new offensive line and serving almost as a coach
02:50in the meeting rooms and on the field. But it does seem like there are a lot of indications that
02:56he might be gone. Do you think he retires or do you think he's elsewhere? I would think that he
03:02would retire. I think if he's going to play more football, that it would be here. He's sort of like
03:08Joe, I think, in that regard. That if he's going to play, he's going to come back to the team
03:12that really wants him to be here and appreciates him and the community that he's very established
03:18in. How close were the Browns paying attention to the whole Max Crosby, Trey Hendrickson thing,
03:24just how to do business, how not to do business? Is it at all true that the Browns maybe are
03:30one of
03:30the teams that wouldn't do business with the Ravens in the future because of this? Or is it just like,
03:34well, they probably wouldn't do a lot of business because they're division rivals? Well, I'll tell
03:38you what, the Cleveland Browns not too long ago were a team that rankled all of the NFL owners
03:44or most of the NFL owners by doing the first and only guaranteed, fully guaranteed contract in the
03:50NFL for Deshaun Watson. So the Browns know something about being a team that teams don't want to do
03:57business with or might look side-eyed at them because of something that they did. So I don't think
04:04that other teams should be as judgmental about this whole situation as it seems like some of them
04:11are being or, you know, what we're hearing coming out from other GMs and whatnot. You know, this is a
04:17business. You have to do what you have to do for the best of your club. And if they thought
04:23that they
04:24didn't feel comfortable with the medicals, then they're not going to give up two first-round picks
04:30for him. That's a mighty steep price to give up for someone if you're just not comfortable.
04:34Yeah. They'll get over it. There's only 32 of these. You only have a limited number of trade
04:38partners. And if there's somebody on that team that you want, you have no choice but to work with
04:42them. So yeah, I agree. I think that there's a stain on them maybe a little bit now, but I
04:47don't
04:47think it'll last. No, I don't think so either. And the Ravens have always been viewed as,
04:53you know, just a very professional organization and, you know, they do things the right way and
04:59people respect them around the league. So yeah, I don't think so. But I do think that it might
05:05remind other owners and other teams and other GMs to, you know, just be a little leery of bashing
05:13another team for how they're doing their business. When do you think the Browns will start to finalize
05:18their draft board? And what, what do you think the odds are that they would trade down again from
05:23six? Well, I think the odds are pretty good if they can find a trade partner. I think Andrew would
05:30love to trade down from number six. And he's basically said that he's open to doing that.
05:35I think they're more than open to doing that because they need once again, to be poised to take a
05:42quarterback in 2027 if the occasion arises. And right now it seems like they are marching forward
05:48with Deshaun Watson and Shador Sanders and they're going to let those guys compete for the starting
05:53job. That's what it seems to be for now. Now that can always change because in the NFL, we know
06:00you have to be ready to pivot depending on what becomes available. But as of right now, it seems
06:05like they're going forward with those two guys competing for the starting job and then see how that
06:11goes this year and then revisit the quarterback thing next year. So therefore you want to have,
06:16if you can get it, another first round pick for next year.
06:19Well, that's what I was going to ask is it feels like the 27 draft first round picks are a
06:25lot
06:25harder to come by. I know the Ravens just almost traded one, but for the most part, do you get
06:30the
06:30sense it's going to be harder for a team like the Browns to acquire a first round pick next year
06:36in a
06:37draft that could have, I don't know what, four or five quarterbacks go in the first round?
06:42Yes, it could definitely be harder. It's probably not going to be, you know, as easy to get the kind
06:50of haul that Andrew Barry got out of the Jaguars last year. And when you look at that trade, I
06:54mean,
06:54that is knocked it out of the park. Yeah, right. I mean, that trade was incredible. So he would have
07:00to work really hard to try to find something like that again. But if you can get a first round
07:06pick,
07:06and again, it will not be easy, but if you can get one, you want to try to do that.
07:11And short of
07:11that, you know, you want to try to at least get maybe a high second or something like that. So
07:17yeah,
07:18I think that he will definitely try, especially after what he was able to get out of the Jaguars
07:24last year. How serious are we about Ty Simpson? Oh, you know, I think Ty Simpson is one of those
07:31players where you do your diligence. And depending on where his market goes, you're just going to
07:37keep an eye on that. And you'd never know with a player like that, that's only started 15 games
07:42in college. You don't know what the market is going to be with how he's going to fall down that
07:47board or
07:47not fall down that board. So you have to be ready to go. I mean, they like him, they have
07:51their eye on
07:52him. I don't see them taking him at number six, or even if they traded back some, I'm not viewing
07:58him necessarily as someone that they're going to bring in here to be their quarterback of the
08:04future. But you have to be ready to pull the trigger on a guy like that if he starts to
08:09tumble
08:09in the same way that they did with Shador last year. Mary Kay Cabot joining us on the Make It
08:14Right
08:14Koka Right Hotline. So not any, we always say open competition. No competition is really open.
08:21How badly does the Browns want Shador to take the reins of the offense this year, at least?
08:27Well, he's got the chance. He's got the opportunity. And I think the Browns believe
08:32that Todd Munkin and his offense and his coaching and his scheme and play calling will be really good
08:37for Shador. They think that, you know, about Deshaun as well. But I think they're very,
08:42very eager to see what Todd Munkin can pull out of Shador Sanders. So this is his opportunity. This is
08:48his moment to step up and really prove to everyone in the NFL, the Cleveland Browns,
08:55fans, his critics, that he is as legendary as he believes that he is. And it's all up to him
09:04now.
09:04He's got to do what it takes to go out there and prove it to him and prove it to
09:09them. And if he can
09:09do that, then he will be the starter on opening day. Who gets to make the call on who the
09:13starting
09:14quarterback is? Is it solely Todd's decision or will he have influence from above?
09:20Well, it will be. Todd will have the final say on that because obviously once you get to that point,
09:27it is the coach who gets to determine who is actually playing and starting. But there will be
09:33collaboration on that because there always is in this organization. He, of course, will put his head
09:40together with Andrew Barry and others in the organization. And I'm sure that they will,
09:46you know, decide together for the most part, but it will be Todd's final say on who is going to
09:52play
09:52on opening day. Mary-Kate Cabot joining us here on the show. Wide receivers, who are we in the market
09:58for? Are we still in the market for them free agent wise? I don't know about free agent wise. Those
10:03are
10:03starting to dwindle. I think at this point now, you might be looking at a trade sometime between
10:10now and the beginning of the season. And what you need to find is sort of a disgruntled receiver.
10:16Sometimes you find your best guys like that. And Andrew has, he has found receivers that need a
10:23change of scenery. So they're at that point now where you would have to find someone who is looking
10:29for a new opportunity and a new contract and all those kinds of things. Now they might skip all of
10:35that and just go straight to the draft and decide that maybe another premier receiver is going to
10:41come in the first round or the second round or whatever, because they are, you know, running low
10:46on options amongst the veterans right now. Mary-Kate, if you heard the rustling going around, I am very
10:53sorry about that. He's a writer. He is not a broadcaster. Turn your mic off and stop sucking on hard
10:59candy
10:59while talking to the guests. I took it out. Uh, he's got his feet kicked up and everything over
11:05here. God, I'm very comfortable. He's so lazy. He's up very early today. Oh my gosh. Uh, actually,
11:13I want to go back to the offensive line for a second. How close do you think they came
11:16on Tyler Linderbaum? And did the price just get too high for where they were with the cap or why
11:22were they interested? Not interested, interested, but not at that price.
11:27You know, I'm guessing that they were not interested at that price. I'm sure that they
11:31kicked the tires. I'm sure that they inquired. I'm sure they looked into it. Uh, but I think early
11:36on they recognized that, uh, that he was going to hit the jackpot and that they probably were not
11:44going to be able to land him. That was my sense on it. Uh, that was always how it seemed
11:49like it was
11:49going to be even heading into it. So I'm sure they, you know, made that phone call, even as the
11:57negotiating window opened, but I think they knew that he wasn't coming here.
12:02What your turn. Well, I'm sorry. I'm just needed to make sure everything was okay over there. I
12:07don't know when you're picking up or when you're not picking up on these things. Uh, Mary Kay. So
12:13I got to go back to the wide receiver thing, disgruntled wide receiver. I think you scared
12:20the bejesus out of every fan out there. When you said looking for a disgruntled wide receiver,
12:24might want to change the scenery because you know, we went and got a disgruntled wide receiver
12:29who needed to change the scenery and things were good for a year. And then it became awfully
12:33disgruntled again this last year. And, and Jerry Judy, I, what makes it, what makes us think
12:39that it's going to change this year with anybody else? Well, of course I know it doesn't have to
12:43be disgruntled, but it can just be a receiver that needs a new opportunity. So it doesn't have
12:49to be disgruntled, but sometimes if you're going to land a really good receiver, uh, it's going to
12:55have to be somebody at that point that is looking for once again, more money, new contract, new
13:01opportunity, change of scenery. Any interesting names there? Any names? No, I don't, I don't see
13:07the Brandon. I was just going to ask that. That's where I was going. Yeah, I don't, I'm not feeling
13:12that one. Um, not that, but you know, there could be somebody in one of those categories that I
13:19mentioned. Uh, and sometimes those things happen after the draft when, you know, if you draft a
13:25couple of guys, then you don't have a need for a veteran or maybe somebody's getting up there in
13:30years a little bit or something like that. So I don't think they know exactly who that person is yet.
13:36And I don't even know if they will look for a veteran, you know, maybe, maybe they'll go
13:41Cardinal paid at number six, who knows? Um, but, uh, you know, I do think that they need
13:47one or two more premier pass catchers on this team. Mary Kay, we, do you have anything else?
13:55Jason, I'll give you one more minute. Go, go, go, go, go, go, go, go. Any chance the first player
14:01off the board is a defensive player for them since this is a defensive heavy draft?
14:06Well, yes, there is a chance. I mean, oh, wait, well, I'm, it's not here. I'm sorry.
14:11Whoa. Okay. Shut up. You don't got to dump all over it for crying out loud. Are you even wearing
14:16socks? What a hog. Go ahead, Mary Kay. I'm sorry. Well, they're poised now to do anything that they
14:22want to do. And that's how Andrew always likes to head into a draft. So if the highest rated player
14:27at number six, and they decide to stay there is a defensive player. Sure. They would go ahead and
14:31do that because, uh, you know, they have more opportunities to restock the offense.
14:37Mary Kay, we thank you now for your, your time. Thank you for putting up with his
14:41intolerance. You should see him. I mean, he's totally an unprofessional. All right, Mary Kay,
14:46Andy, you go. Yeah. I see how you tied your shoes. All right, Mary Kay, thank you very much for
14:50the
14:50time. All the best to you and yours. And of course, we'll talk to you next week. I might take
14:52them off.
14:53Sounds good. Thanks guys. Thank you. Mary Kay Cabot on the, uh, make it right call call right hotline.
14:57All right.
14:58All right.
