00:00I don't know that a lot of flowers have been thrown at the front office
00:03for the Browns over the past, I don't know, since 1999.
00:06Fair?
00:07You don't hear a lot of flowers being thrown at the Browns.
00:09Nor should they be.
00:10No.
00:11But Eric DaCosta from the Ravens told WBAL something very interesting
00:17about Andrew Barry.
00:19The Browns, I think they had a really nice draft.
00:22I think they had a really nice draft last year.
00:23They do a good job.
00:24Andrew Barry, give him a lot of credit.
00:26I think he's a good evaluator.
00:28He's pretty smart.
00:29His picks make sense.
00:31Logical.
00:31There's, I think, a thorough process involved.
00:34They did a nice job last year with their picks.
00:36I think in their last year, in my opinion,
00:39Schwestinger was one of the best players in the draft.
00:41They got him in the second round defensive rookie of the year.
00:44I think they do a hell of a job, and I thought they had a good draft this year.
00:47So, you know, with Todd Monk in there, you know, calling plays,
00:50and as the head coach, I think that's a team that eventually will be a team
00:54to be reckoned with.
00:56Don't!
00:57What?
00:58A team to be reckoned with?
01:00Who are we talking about?
01:02Keyword there might have been eventually.
01:04Are we talking about the Cleveland Browns?
01:06Is that who we're talking about?
01:08I don't get too excited about, and I know I read it all,
01:12I just don't get too amped up about projections and flowers and things like this.
01:17But that's Eric DaCosta, man.
01:19I mean, they've done a very, very nice job.
01:22Bob, thanks to Ozzie Newsome, who would have been great if we could have had him here
01:26and maybe given him a part of the ownership when he had the opportunity to.
01:30God, do you know what that would have been worth now?
01:31Oh!
01:34You know, to hear that about the Browns, I wish every day could be, you know,
01:40April 30th when it comes to the Browns, and you could feel good about what they're doing
01:44and what the direction is, and there's no, there's really no controversy,
01:47and you're like, okay, well, and even if it was over the quarterback
01:50and there was some controversy, you know, you could sit here and talk about that a little bit.
01:54But, I mean, it is a pretty feel-good time for the Browns, which is rare.
01:59It's just rare.
02:01Yeah, I understand all that, and I'm glad.
02:04And, again, I like the draft, but let's see these guys on the field first.
02:08I'm with you.
02:09I'm with you.
02:09And last year's draft, I think they did a very nice job,
02:12but I'm also, I think they get almost too much credit there
02:17because I'm still trying to figure out two quarterbacks,
02:19and I'm still hoping Dylan Sampson becomes worthy of the idea
02:24that we needed two running backs in the same draft.
02:28And I like Dylan, so let's see where that goes.
02:31But the two quarterbacks last year still make me, still make my head spin.
02:36It makes my head spin, too, and it makes you wonder, you know,
02:40anybody that would say, like, I thought last year's draft was really good, okay?
02:45Really good.
02:46And shouldn't that be the expectation on your general manager
02:49to have a good to really good draft every year?
02:53Well, otherwise you're going to be unemployed, in theory.
02:59That's the expectation.
03:00But now it's, you know, if he can string this thing together,
03:04and if the, yeah, like, Darrell Ryder's sitting here saying,
03:07well, they're an eight-win team next year.
03:09And I'm like, what?
03:11Really?
03:11You really think they can win eight years?
03:12And, like, I'm excited about that.
03:14And then all of a sudden you're like, wow, in the back of my mind,
03:17I'm like, there are 500.
03:18And I'm like, not with 17 games they're not.
03:20They're still under 500, even on an eight-win season.
03:24So that the expectation and the bar is so low
03:27that if they can pull off eight wins next year, that that is success.
03:34It would be solid.
03:35I'm sitting here saying, okay, if we turn the page.
03:38Eight wins could actually put you in the playoff conversation.
03:41Yeah, in the hunt.
03:42I think eight wins is in the hunt towards the end.
03:44I'm okay with that.
03:45To me, that's improvement over last year.
03:48I don't know who's saying somebody was saying 12 wins.
03:51I'm like, really?
03:5312 wins?
03:56It's too early to get into some of this stuff,
03:58but it's never too early to make sure that your team has a vision.
04:04And, you know, we were just sitting here days ago.
04:06Dan's, you know, talking about, well, what do you –
04:08before the draft, what was the line we were talking about?
04:11What is the true meaning of this season?
04:13What are they really trying to do?
04:15Are they really trying to win?
04:17Because they're probably not going to bring in another quarterback.
04:21And the timing of it kind of all syncs up.
04:24They're putting shovels in the ground,
04:25even though they've been digging out there for a while,
04:27out in Brook Park.
04:28You now seem to have this base over the last two years
04:33that gives you hope for the future,
04:35that makes you think they can win.
04:37But I think the majority of the Browns fans,
04:39in their right mind, are like, okay, let me see it.
04:42Let me see what you're going to do on the field next year,
04:45and then I'll buy into the product.
04:47In fact, we've had such bad football here for the last –
04:50now coming up on three decades since they return,
04:54that I don't know how you could go in and just go,
04:56oh, this is the Browns here.
04:57Even the whole wait until next year mantra
04:59is like thrown out the window on this thing.
05:01It's, oh, wait until they get to the dome.
05:04That's not next year.
05:05But somehow, some way, the league –
05:08and by the way, it's good –
05:09I guarantee you when the commissioner's out in Brook Park today,
05:12he's going to say, when the Browns are good,
05:14it's good for the league because we hear that all the time.
05:19Along with so many teams, though.
05:21But I agree with that.
05:23That there is something to our franchise being good
05:25that's helpful for the league.
05:26But you could say the same for a third of the league.
05:30You know, it's good when the Green Bay Packers are good.
05:32I don't know if anyone's saying it's good.
05:34It's good when the Steelers are good.
05:36When the old traditional names in this league are good.
05:38Yeah, absolutely.
05:39I think so, too.
05:41I want to sit here and celebrate and cheer for off-season action.
05:47I'm not trying to be negative.
05:48You can be optimistic about it, Andy.
05:49On paper, I think Andrew Barry did a great job.
05:52You know, the question comes down to, okay, great.
05:57You've not drafted wide receivers very well,
06:00but you never used high picks on them.
06:02Never.
06:03Hopefully you evaluated wide receivers at the top of the draft
06:06better than you did in the middle of the draft.
06:09Hey, hopefully you evaluated offensive linemen better at the top of the draft
06:13than you did at the middle of the draft.
06:19We still have to see the guys on the field.
06:21I mean, clearly.
06:23You're talking about more than half.
06:25Can't do victory laps on guys who haven't played it down yet.
06:28No, and I question the level of optimism you can have on offense.
06:34When you're looking at six, maybe seven new guys.
06:39You get a big-time optimism.
06:41Look what happened in Chicago.
06:44Chicago changes its team out, brings in Ben Johnson from Detroit,
06:49different offensive mind, different offensive set of eyes,
06:51and they're a much better football team.
06:54And how many changes did they make on offense, though?
06:57They changed out their entire offensive line, just like the Browns did this year.
07:02They brought in more talent.
07:04Brought in different players that brought in Luther Burden at wide receiver.
07:09Dan, let me go back to this, because you talked about it before the draft.
07:12What is the goal?
07:13Is the goal still the same?
07:15Because you've always questioned the goal of this next season.
07:20I stand behind it.
07:21I don't know what the goal is for this season.
07:23I think for the future of this franchise,
07:24it's to get everybody in the best positions that they can to succeed
07:28and see what it looks like.
07:29I think in a perfect world, they're competitive, and they look good,
07:32and they win six games.
07:33I think that's everything we can ask for,
07:36and I think that's what's best to get the quarterback out of this draft,
07:39because I don't think the guys that are on this roster
07:41have any future here at quarterback.
07:44One of them will.
07:46Okay.
07:47As a backup?
07:48I don't know as what.
07:50There's no way you're not going to get one guy
07:52out of this four-man quarterback group that's not going to be here for a while.
07:56Okay.
07:57Somebody will be, but that doesn't mean he's going to be a good player.
08:01Put it this way, guys.
08:02My first goal for this team to get over is we are now in the period of time
08:06where no news is good news.
08:07Keep it that way.
08:09I am so sick and tired of having to be well-hurst in Florida and Texas law.
08:13For the love of God, just give me an offseason where no one's in trouble.
08:17Start there.
08:18Start with no news is good news.
08:19Dan, I hate to agree with you on something that's that basic and obvious, but I do.
08:25Start with no news.
08:26That would tell me right there that there has been a cultural difference that has taken place.
08:30Seems like there is one.
08:32If you listen to the guys they drafted after they've drafted them and at their press conferences
08:38and everything else, man, this seems like a really nice bunch of young guys that they brought in.
08:44Those first four picks seem giddy to be drafted by the Cleveland Browns.
08:49That's nice.
08:50And that includes the people already on the roster who have had issues in the past.
08:55Absolutely.
08:56No news is good news.
08:58No news is good news.
08:59No injury news.
09:01No news with the law.
09:02I don't want to have to be versed enough that I feel like I could take the bar in the
09:07state of Texas.
09:07Can I ask you something?
09:08If you're Shadour Sanders, because we heard what on the morning show they were talking about, too,
09:13that, you know, Shiloh Sanders made some kind of crack about Mary Kay Cabot's story yesterday
09:18and about Mary Kay.
09:20But where does this leave Shadour if Watson is taking all?
09:24I don't know.
09:25There's no way I'd give him all the reps.
09:27I wouldn't do it.
09:28Your number two guy has got to be able to go out there and be efficient.
09:32And when you've got young quarterbacks.
09:34Can I give somebody all the reps at this time of the year?
09:36No, that's why you have four quarterbacks in the first place during these camps.
09:41But if you're Shadour Sanders, you know, what are you thinking today?
09:45You know, the day after hearing that Deshaun Watson, and maybe they haven't said anything to Shadour about this.
09:51Maybe they have.
09:51Maybe Shadour knows exactly where he stands.
09:54You know, he wasn't happy in the beginning of the year when he had no opportunity to take any major
09:58snaps.
09:58And as Daryl said, you know, he's throwing to the ball boys after practice.
10:02But if you're Shadour Sanders and you're sitting here today going,
10:05Well, Deshaun Watson's the guy right now.
10:07That's the way it looks.
10:08That's what everybody's talking about.
10:10So, if I'm Shadour Sanders, I'm working harder.
10:13Obviously, we've seen him here in the offseason, which is good news.
10:17Which means he is engaged and wants to be a part of this.
10:20You know, they've joked around with him and Todd Munkin.
10:23We've seen that when they get to meet each other and have a little bit of an opportunity to bond.
10:28But if I'm Shadour, I just, I'm probably like, okay, I get it.
10:32I understand why Deshaun Watson's the number one quarterback going into the Saints.
10:36It's my job to beat him out.
10:38It's my job to be a better quarterback when I step out on the field and I get those opportunities.
10:42And I know they might be limited now that we're talking about Watson being what should be QB1,
10:47according to what Mary Kaye's story said yesterday.
10:50Sanders just has to work harder.
10:51That's all there is to it.
10:52And if he works hard, I think what you really want to do is, even if it's a year from
10:57now,
10:58when, you know, Daryl's talking about that the ease of letting Watson out of a Browns jersey
11:04become significantly better in a year, that you want to be the last man standing
11:10when this thing's all said and done.
11:11So just keep working hard.
11:12That's all you can ask for.
11:14To me, the bottom line is this.
11:16Did Shadour show you anything last year that would make you think
11:20you're absolutely the number one starter going into this season?
11:23No, he didn't.
11:24But he gave me enough reason to think that he deserves a chance to fight for that job,
11:28which is what it looks like he's going to have the opportunity to do,
11:30and the opportunity to be a young quarterback in the NFL trying to earn his job.
11:36And I have no problem with that at all.
11:37No.
11:38Nothing wrong with that.
11:39No.
11:39And I think that people just, that everybody that wants to just hand him everything,
11:43that doesn't help anybody.
11:45And it doesn't help him.
11:47If you're handing him the gig right out of school when there were so many
11:51question marks about it was, hey, just go out and prove it.
11:54Show everybody that you're the best quarterback in camp.
11:56And you know what?
11:58You got zero time in the beginning of the year last year,
12:01and somehow, someway, they gave you the opportunity to be the starting quarterback
12:04when the quarterback ahead of you got knocked out with a concussion.
12:07There were 53 quarterbacks in the NFL last year who had enough numbers playing time
12:15to qualify in passer rating, okay, to have a legit number.
12:2053.
12:22Shadour was ranked 49th.
12:26What does that scream?
12:28And Dylan Gabriel, for whatever it's worth, was ranked 39th.
12:31That screams great.
12:33Hope you learned something, and I hope you can come back and be better
12:36and maybe win that job.
12:39I'm pulling for both of the young guys.
12:41That would be ideal.
12:42But anybody who thinks you should just flat out one of these two guys,
12:47whoever, either, should be the starting quarterback.
12:50Over Deshaun, who's getting paid all the cash.
12:52Over anybody.
12:53Because neither guy was great last year.
12:55Over Deshaun, who's getting paid all the cash.
12:55Over Deshaun, who's getting paid all the cash.
12:55Over Deshaun, who's getting paid all the cash.
