00:00John Fanta, Cleveland's own NBC Sports joining us right now.
00:03What's up, buddy?
00:05What is happening, guys?
00:06Happy March.
00:07Great to be with you.
00:08Talking to you from New York City this afternoon.
00:11Buddy, we appreciate you joining us.
00:13I do want to ask you, because we got in this debate earlier,
00:16Jonathan's a bit of a fame W and would rather go to dinner with LeBron and Tom Brady.
00:21I would rather a good dinner party and a good conversation.
00:25Nick says he wouldn't even go if invited to a dinner party with Tom Brady and LeBron James.
00:31He wouldn't even go, and I said it's ridiculous.
00:33I mean, I wouldn't expect anything less.
00:35By the way, they would pay for the meal, and you're not going to take their meal?
00:38I mean, my goodness, Wilson.
00:40How good can the meal be?
00:42I'm not being bored by two guys who are really good at sports
00:45but maybe aren't the most well-rounded human beings in the world.
00:48So would you rather go to dinner with us two or those two?
00:52You two.
00:52I like you two.
00:54Wow.
00:54Like, personally, you guys are good hangs.
00:58You know, I mean, we don't make the salary that you make, so you can –
01:02I appreciate that.
01:05That's very high praise from you out of the gates.
01:08Real quick, LeBron and Tom Brady or Jared Allen?
01:13Come on, LeBron and Tom Brady.
01:16I didn't know you were a fame W.
01:18You're not a fame W because you want to go with more interesting people.
01:20I mean, more people are fame Ws than not.
01:23How do you know Jared Allen is an awesome dinner guest, by the way?
01:27Because he's a nerd.
01:27Just because he likes nerdy things doesn't mean he's going to like your conversation with them.
01:32Jocks?
01:33Historically not.
01:33I mean, come on now.
01:34What are you even talking about?
01:35But it's conversational.
01:37You would sit down and then you'd be able – you know, you ask questions all the time of different
01:42interviewees.
01:43But you'd sit down, you'd talk with them a little bit.
01:45I mean, I would try to, like, get to know them a little bit, ask them questions.
01:50If they're not going to be good hangs, they're not good hangs.
01:52But at least I can say I went to dinner with LeBron James and Tom Brady.
01:56I think that's where Peter Lynn's at.
01:57Sounds like a real fame W.
01:59That's the part where he calls his fame Ws because of that part right there, John.
02:01Oh, at least I got to say it.
02:03Who's going to be impressed by this?
02:04Everyone.
02:05Everyone will be impressed by it.
02:06It'll be a story for ages.
02:09Fame W.
02:10You tell about the time that you ate dinner with LeBron and Tom Brady.
02:12Fame Ws.
02:12Not fame W.
02:13Just say – listen, I think John and I are just into experiences in life.
02:18And when great experiences happen, you take them and you run with them, you know?
02:21Yeah, exactly.
02:23It's the same thing with – this is classic Wilson.
02:25The guy's like, well, you know, the team from the Western Conference is going to win the NBA Finals anyway,
02:30so what's the point of even making it that far?
02:32You don't like a good hang, man.
02:34I actually think – I'm saying the opposite of that.
02:37No, he's saying that's exactly what you said.
02:39That's why I would go to Jared Allen.
02:40That's exactly what you said about the Western Conference.
02:42He's 100% right, Fanta.
02:43And when you flip-flop after they lose in the NBA Finals to the Thunder, I don't want to hear
02:46about it, John.
02:47You twist and you turn and you flip and you flop.
02:51Maybe Nick Wilson should run for office, everybody.
02:56All right, fame W.
02:57I think there's pot in the kettle situation here.
03:01John, let's go to the Browns.
03:03How are we feeling about the first couple days of free agency for the Browns?
03:06Well, I think that they're addressing, you know, things that they need to.
03:13I think when you have the loss of Devin Bush to be able to go and get Quincy Williams, who's
03:19an all-pro linebacker, who's got the experience with Mike Grudenberg and has worked with him before, that's something that
03:27they had to go and do.
03:29They've got to continue to, you know, the offensive line is of paramount importance here, guys.
03:36I mean, we could talk all day about the quarterback position, and the Browns have already done one thing to
03:41address their offensive line, but they have to continue to do it.
03:45Like, this is a room that, frankly, if this team is going to have more success than we think that
03:55they're going to heading into the year, then this offensive line room has got to continue to get bolstered, I
04:00think, in the free agency period.
04:01So the start is solid. I don't object to anything that they've done thus far. I expected activity. I think
04:08we all expected activity. It's a very, very crucial time for this organization because they've got to get some new
04:14blood and new experience into the room.
04:16So I like how they've started, but the job's far from finished.
04:21And this is, you know, my judgment of Andrew Barry is on two things. Number one, what this offensive line
04:28looks like come week one.
04:30And I say this knowing, you know, you've got to stay healthy, and there's some things that have to go
04:34your way there, too, in training camp.
04:36But I think the other thing is, you know, the wide receiver room is the most point-blank thing on
04:42this football team that's got to get addressed and that has to be looked hard at.
04:45So, you know, I like the addition of Quincy Williams. I think that that's a good one.
04:51And I hope that they continue on the offensive side of the football to get better in the trenches because
04:58this football team, the quarterback plays them bad, okay?
05:02But there are times where whoever's been a quarterback for the Cleveland Browns, I know you two would agree, has
05:07not had even an inkling of a second to figure out what they're going to do
05:11because the offensive line stability has been, well, exactly that, very unstable.
05:16Well, you mentioned the quarterback then, John.
05:18Does this now feel like to yourself that it's going to be Shador versus Deshaun Watson week one,
05:23or do you feel like they still might have an ace up their sleeve?
05:28You know, I want to say that they've got something up their sleeve here,
05:31but I don't love the, you know, some of the things that are coming out in the rumor mill because
05:38they suggest that, you know,
05:40maybe that's not going to be in the cards.
05:42You know, there's a lot of Mac Jones scuttle that I thought that that was an option for them.
05:48It doesn't feel like that that's going to be an option for the Cleveland Browns.
05:52And so, yeah, as we go on here, you know, I don't, there's nothing that suggests that there's a prick
06:03up their sleeve
06:04because I'm not sure that there's, that they believe that one of those options that we've spoken about the last
06:11couple of weeks
06:12is going to be substantially better or, you know, cause much more good than what they've got.
06:18So this kind of goes back to what we were discussing last week.
06:20I kind of think like, if, if the Browns were going to do this, right, why not be aggressive and
06:27do it?
06:27You're in a competitive market.
06:29You're not the only team that is trying to address your quarterback room right now.
06:34So one of you had, I believe it was you, JP, correct me if I'm wrong,
06:39but one of you had brought up last week, like at the end of the day, is it just better
06:43off to go Sanders and Watson
06:46and either, you know, hopefully Sanders is able to hit and, and then you find something out or if it
06:53bombs out,
06:53if it bombs out, it bombs out and you benefit your draft position.
06:56Yeah.
06:56My, my boom or bust proposal.
06:58Yeah.
06:58Yeah.
06:58And so the boom or bust, I mean, based on, based on what I think we're all reading right now,
07:03and maybe one of you, I, I, I have not heard what your latest take is on this.
07:09Maybe one of you feel differently than me, but my gut feeling is, is that the Browns are not going
07:14to, to pursue someone.
07:16And I, I kind of thought at the start of this, that they would, but as each day passes, I
07:21don't know where you feel on it,
07:22but I, I don't see it.
07:23John, let's look to college basketball here.
07:26Jeremy Fierce kicks a guy in the pill box about a month ago.
07:29Tom Izzo's hot.
07:30He's mad.
07:31He does it again earlier this week.
07:33And Tom Izzo goes, I think we're being one-sided about this.
07:37What's what changed?
07:38He kicked him in the pill box and another guy in the pill box.
07:41And now all of a sudden Tom Izzo's a big softie.
07:46He's trying to stick up for his guy and he hates Michigan with a passion.
07:50I mean, that, that's just what it is.
07:52He, he, uh, look, uh, he's not a, he, Tom Izzo has never really been a softie.
07:58And I don't, I don't think that he, that he is one.
08:01Uh, but that was not that that's very opposite of who he's been in his career.
08:06So the fact is like the, the way that Ohio state and Michigan football fans hate each other.
08:13Um, I'm not saying that Michigan state and Michigan, you know, are of, of that nature in the football
08:18realm, but in basketball, it's been a long time hatred.
08:21And, you know, Izzo went off on the little brother saying, I'm not anybody's little brother.
08:26Well, guess what?
08:27I mean, this year Michigan's allowed to say that cause you have been and fears, you know,
08:32fears has, uh, he's been, he's had some, some stuff this year where he's, he's done some
08:37things that you can't do in a basketball game.
08:40So, uh, I, I, Tom is in a hard place with this, right?
08:45Because he's trying to defend his guy and he's trying to not be stood up by the, uh, by
08:52university of Michigan.
08:53But the fact is they've gotten Michigan state twice and he can't stand the thought of that
08:57cause he's Tom Izzo and he's a hall of famer.
09:00So he's in a very hard spot right now, fellas.
09:02He really is.
09:03Uh, that was a very, has a very PC response there.
09:08I needed you to rip Izzo for being a clown.
09:10Oh, come on.
09:12He is not a clown.
09:13Is he right next to you?
09:15Clowns can be hall of famers.
09:17No, I'm not.
09:18Yeah.
09:19Yeah.
09:20I'm, I'm not.
09:20I'm not.
09:22Well, yeah, exactly.
09:23I mean, there's, there's plenty of, of different clowns in hall of fames and, uh, I could, I
09:29could go on a tangent, but I'm not going to go on that.
09:32But the fact is, is there a clown hall of fame though?
09:35Not going to know.
09:35Is there a clown hall of fame?
09:36There's gotta be, right?
09:37I mean, I like, but then again, it's called the, it's called the program.
09:40It's called the basketball hall of fame.
09:43They'll let anyone in there.
09:45Oh, Nick, Nick, come on.
09:47Hold on.
09:48I just, I just went to clown HOF.com.
09:51Hold on here.
09:52Oh, there's an international.
09:53John, did you put that on incognito browser?
09:57Wait a minute.
09:59What a turn.
10:00Wait a minute.
10:01Vice president, Hugh Jackson, president, George Coquinas.
10:04All right, guys.
10:07I'm just reading the clowns.
10:08There's a lot of inductees in here.
10:10I, Glenn, Frosty, Little, of course.
10:12Some of the greats.
10:12Yeah.
10:13Yeah.
10:13What about Grok?
10:14Bobby K.
10:15Steve, Steve, it's a Steve Smith in here.
10:17And I'm going to, I'm going to assume that's not the Steve Smith.
10:19We all think that it is.
10:20Oh, the, the Fratellinis.
10:22Who could forget the Fratellinis?
10:24Wait, why is Chris Perez in the clown hall of fame?
10:27Hmm.
10:28Is this dog in the hall of fame as well?
10:30Yeah, it should be.
10:31Hey, John, give me your.
10:33Where does that rank on all timers?
10:34That's for a different day.
10:35Go ahead.
10:36Give me your hottest college basketball take that you have.
10:40Ooh.
10:41Ooh, that, that, that, that, that, that, that Arizona could lose in the first weekend of
10:47the NCAA tournament as a one seed, they could get picked off.
10:51And it's because, um, and if you haven't watched them and you're thinking one seed,
10:56they're going to make the final four.
10:57Everybody's better.
10:58You know, the, the one line is better than everybody.
11:00I think that they're susceptible because they're one of the worst three point shooting teams in
11:06the country.
11:07And if you run into the wrong eight, nine seed in the second round that can shoot threes,
11:12that's the great negator.
11:13So that's one right off the top of my brain, um, that sticks out.
11:18You know, I, I think, um, man, it's that, that's one hot take that I have.
11:25I still would, would not sleep on John Calipari to make the final four that that's comes off
11:31as a hot take because they're not going to be a one, two or three seed guys.
11:34They're probably going to be like a five or six seed.
11:36They got a guard named Darius, a cuff that if you haven't watched him, I'm telling you,
11:40you're going to, you're going to really enjoy watching him play in March.
11:43He's the type of guard that Cal has won with in March before.
11:46So I didn't go chalky on you.
11:48I didn't give you like, Hey, Michigan's going to make the national championship game.
11:51No, I'm here to say the one, the one that comes to mind is I think Arizona could lose
11:55in the first weekend.
11:56So that means like, I think they could lose the second round.
11:58I think that Arkansas could make the final four.
12:01And my third hot take is I believe a 14 or 15 seed will win a first round game.
12:07So when you're filling out the bracket or you're doing your, I always tell people my favorite
12:10thing to do in the tournament, you can do this on different sports books and whatnot.
12:15You can go and say, I'm going to have, I'm going to take over one and a half, 12, 13,
12:20or 14 seeds to win a first round game.
12:22Last year, it didn't happen.
12:23I think a little bit of chaos returns this year and we will see over one and a half,
12:2912, 13, or 14.
12:30That just means you need two of them.
12:32You need two of them to pull off an upset win for the bet to cash.
12:35And it's, it's pretty good odds.
12:36Sit back and root for a Cinderella.
12:39All right, John, I can finish this interview on one of two jokes.
12:43You get to choose a college basketball joke or a clown joke.
12:50You've got a joke for me.
12:51Yeah, yeah, yeah, you choose which one.
12:54D where's choice?
12:54Which one do you want to hear?
12:57They might actually end up both being the same joke.
12:59Nope.
13:00Okay.
13:00All right.
13:01I'm, I will, uh, we have time for college basketball.
13:05So this week I'm going to go clown.
13:06Okay.
13:07The great negator also in the clown hall of fame.
13:10Oh God.
13:11All right.
13:12Okay.
13:12Fine.
13:12You're right.
13:13You're right.
13:13Wasn't that great?
13:13We need redemption.
13:14Uh, Darius A-Coff.
13:16I'm more of a B-Coff kind of guy.
13:21Oh, Nick, Nick, Nick.
13:23I didn't say either was good, John.
13:26Before, but that was, that was brutal.
13:28Before I go.
13:28That was kind of funny.
13:30It was because it was so, it was one of those things where it was so bad.
13:33It was good.
13:34It was like reverse fleece liquor out of your own end zone.
13:36No, um, I wanted to know though, where do you two stand?
13:40Do either of you think the Browns are going to sign a quarterback?
13:42They should.
13:43Do you agree with me?
13:43Yes.
13:44This is a ridiculous idea and it's about Deshaun.
13:47It's not about Shador.
13:47John, I think your idea is the correct one.
13:50I think they're going to go Shador, Deshaun, and then they'll draft a quarterback and that's
13:53your room.
13:54So, Jonathan, for what it's worth though, I don't want to come off as a flip-flopper here.
13:58Even though you blame me every week for being that.
14:00A little late for that, buddy.
14:02No, no, no.
14:02Come on.
14:05I, I believe they should go and, and I was okay.
14:10I was on the Kyler Murray bandwagon.
14:12You remember last week I was.
14:13Yeah, I do.
14:14Yeah, yeah.
14:14And then you weren't.
14:14I think they should.
14:16So, I think I agree with Wilson here.
14:19But, I don't think, I, I do not think that they will.
14:22Those are two different things.
14:24What I think they should do is not what I think they're going to do.
14:26Which is constantly how we have to have these convos with the Browns.
14:29Because it's never, it's never what we think they should do, John.
14:32It's always then, them just pulling a rabbit out of their hat.
14:34Neither one of you see Mac Jones.
14:36That doesn't seem like, based on the recent scuttle, that's not good.
14:39I think Nick is in on Mac Jones.
14:40I think he just doesn't qualify.
14:41I am in on Mac Jones, but not for a second round pick.
14:43That's stupid.
14:44And at some point, they're going to come off that price.
14:45I'm out on Mac Jones.
14:46I'd rather play Shador.
14:49But if, if, if, what they're asking for.
14:52What they're asking for is insane.
14:52What they're asking for is absurd.
14:54It's absurd for anybody that would want to get him.
14:56Come on.
14:56Like, that, that, that market value.
14:58That just says how, that also says how barren the shelves are with, with quarterbacks of
15:06any quality in this marketplace.
15:09And so that's why I think, like, for, first off, for a second rounder, no way.
15:12But I, I think that that's where I can understand.
15:16I think they got to go and get a veteran.
15:18Because I think you got to find out about your other pieces on your roster.
15:21But I, I just, I don't think that they will.
15:24I don't think that they will.
15:25John, enjoy March.
15:27Enjoy tonight.
15:27We appreciate you, buddy.
15:28Thank you, John.
15:29I'll talk to you guys next week.
15:31Work on the jokes, for heaven's sake.
15:33You work on the flip-flop and I'll work on the jokes.
15:35We'll get there eventually.
