28 February - National afternoon forecast presented by Greg Dewhurst.
Transcript
00:00Hello there, good afternoon. Welcome to your latest forecast from the Met Office.
00:05And a brief ridge of high pressure today, meaning the weather is fairly settled.
00:10We're between weather systems at the moment. Notice the blues indicating a fresher feel to things.
00:14But it's all changed through Sunday and into the beginning of next week as low pressure starts to dominate once
00:20more,
00:20bringing stronger winds, outbreaks of rain associated with weather fronts.
00:24But the yellow is back on the map there, indicating mild air coming in from the south-west.
00:30So it is a mixed Saturday as we go through the afternoon. A ridge of high pressure across us.
00:35But there are areas of rain, a band of showery rain across eastern parts of England into south-east Scotland,
00:41as well as another band of showery rain pushing into Northern Ireland, western Scotland, western fringes of Wales and down
00:47into Cornwall as well.
00:49But in between, plenty of sunny spells and winds generally light, though just starting to pick up across the far
00:55west.
00:56And it was a cold start to the day, particularly in the north, temperatures down to minus 8 Celsius,
01:00but recovering up to around 6 or 7 degrees near average for the time of year, around 8 to 11
01:06degrees elsewhere.
01:07So in the sunshine feeling fairly pleasant.
01:09But under the cloud and showery rain, it will be quite chilly.
01:13As we move through into the evening time, those bands of showery rain push their way eastward.
01:17Some hill snow possible for a time across Scotland as it bumps into some cold air here.
01:22And then a more significant band of rain and stronger winds moving into the far west as we head towards
01:28the end of the night.
01:29The wind's picking up here, southerly direction, so actually starting to bring in some mild air.
01:34So temperatures rising through the night across the far west by dawn, around 7 or 8 degrees.
01:39Further east and north, nearer to freezing, 3 or 4 degrees in towns and cities.
01:43Perhaps a touch of frost across northeast Scotland, where we'll see the clearest skies.
01:48So it does mean a cloudy start to Sunday for most of us.
01:51Dry in the east initially, some sunshine for northeast Scotland, perhaps east Anglia as well.
01:56But it won't be long before the weather systems move in.
01:59Outbreaks of showery rain across the whole of the country.
02:02But through into the afternoon, the clouds may start to break a little across central and eastern parts of England.
02:07Elsewhere, generally staying cloudy.
02:10Further heavy rain starting to push into Northern Ireland, western Scotland as the cold front starts to approach here.
02:17Winds coming in from the south, turning increasingly blustery for all gusts of 30 miles an hour or so.
02:22Perhaps gales starting to develop later on in the afternoon across some western coasts.
02:27And with that mild air drawing in, most of us 12, 13, locally 14 Celsius.
02:33Just still some colder air holding on with temperatures nearer to average, around 7 to 9 Celsius across northeast Scotland.
02:40Into the evening time on Sunday.
02:42Heavy rain across parts of Northern Ireland into Scotland.
02:47Elsewhere, generally cloudy.
02:48Some rain and drizzle.
02:49Some hill fog in places.
02:50The winds strengthening further.
02:52Gales across western parts.
02:54But that will keep temperatures up.
02:55And it remains very wet into the start of Monday before clearing.
03:00And then there are signs high pressure starts building in Tuesday and into Wednesday.
03:04There may be some lingering weather fronts in places, but most places should stay dry.
03:09Temperatures in the south, near or slightly above average, are feeling pleasant in the sunny spells and near average in
03:15the north as well.
03:16So there are signs as we move through into next week of the weather settling down a little bit.
