21 February - National Morning Forecast presented by Aidan McGivern
Transcript
00:00Hello, a very good morning to you. One thing we'll all notice stepping out today is how
00:05much milder it is compared with so much of the year so far. A simple change in wind direction,
00:11the cause. Southwesterly is now bringing warmth from the subtropics. Chetland, the exception,
00:18perhaps Orkney for a time, northerly winds here, so a chilly start to the day. But actually
00:23that's where we've got the best of the sunshine first thing because accompanying these southwesterly
00:28winds elsewhere, we've got a lot of cloud and spells of rain. The more persistent spells of rain
00:33coming through in the form of weather fronts. One weather front clearing the north and east of
00:37England, much of Scotland first thing. Drier for a time then, actually some reasonable brightness,
00:43not necessarily sunshine, but some brighter spells through the Midlands and then squeezed into the
00:47east of England by the afternoon. Elsewhere, it turns increasingly gloomy. Lots of thick and low
00:54clouds settling over the hills in the west and bringing bouts of heavy and persistent rainfall.
01:00Now, the rainfall will cover many central and western parts of the UK, but it's going to be
01:04heaviest over the hills of North Wales, northwest England and western Scotland. And that's a change
01:10in itself because the rain up to this point during the year so far has been more focused across southern
01:15parts than northeast of Scotland, much of Northern Ireland. So a different focus for the rain and I
01:21suspect western Scotland and northwest England able to soak up a lot of this wet weather even if it's
01:25going to be a miserable day on Saturday. Eastern and northeast Scotland dry at first. Some brightness
01:30there lingering across Shetland, drier for the east of England and remarkably mild. 14, perhaps 15
01:35Celsius, warmest day of the year so far, likely if we beat 13.9 Celsius. The heaviest of the rain
01:44moves
01:45northeastwards during Saturday night. Further wet weather to come from the west, showery bits of rain,
01:50rain at times. And then more prolonged wet weather returning to the southwest of England. And of
01:56course, we don't need it in the southwest of England. So a keen eye on this to make sure that
02:00it doesn't cause any impacts. Elsewhere, a drier interlude through central parts. Showers coming in
02:07across western Scotland and Northern Ireland. Overnight, gusty winds. And of course, it's going to be a
02:13mild night with this southwesterly airflow. Double figures for many parts of England and Wales,
02:18mid to high single figures for Scotland and Northern Ireland. It's milder for Shetland on
02:24Sunday morning compared with Saturday morning, but much wetter. And for many parts of the south,
02:30and increasingly the southeast, it is a wet morning. But the rain does clear by lunchtime.
02:36Brighter skies follow for many parts of England and Wales. Some decent sunny spells, but a gusty wind
02:40accompanying and bringing the odd shower. Although the bulk of the showers will be moving into Scotland
02:45and Northern Ireland, heavy and potentially quite lively downpours with gusty winds.
02:52Those winds, once again, resulting in mild air right across the UK. 7 Celsius in Shetland,
02:5813 Celsius across central and eastern parts of England. So a mild weekend, but apart from that,
03:07not a great deal has changed. We've still got lots of rain to come through the weekend and into the
03:12start of next week. We'll keep you updated right here on our YouTube channel. Bye-bye.
