13 February - National afternoon forecast presented by Alex Burkill.
Transcript
00:00Hello, very good day to you. There's quite a split in our weather this afternoon. In
00:05northern areas, there's a good deal of fine sunny weather around. Across more central
00:09southern parts, well, it's a different story in as much as it's cloudy and it's quite
00:14wet. More of the weather that we've been used to so far this year. We do have an occluded
00:18front that's gradually edging its way southwards, and as it does so, colder air across the north,
00:23that's going to feed its way southwards. So temperatures really are going to be dropping
00:26as we go through today and into tomorrow. But looking at the details, and yes, it's
00:32actually largely sunny across much of Scotland and Northern Ireland through this afternoon.
00:35Just some wintry showers across northern and perhaps eastern parts. Across much of England
00:40and Wales, more cloud here, and there's a fair amount of rain as well. Even some hill snow
00:45mixed in, particularly over the highest ground of Wales. But it's the rain that's perhaps
00:48going to cause some problems, particularly in the southwest, where the ground's still
00:53really saturated. Any heavy bursts of rain could cause some problems. There could be
00:57a bit of flooding in a few places. Now, I mentioned that colder air across the north.
01:02Here, temperatures suppressed, mid-single figures at best, despite the fact that there'll be largely
01:07sunny skies. Further south, things are turning colder as we go through the afternoon. But nonetheless,
01:12some places towards the south coast may just about get into double digits.
01:16Then, as we go through the evening and overnight, we see a lot of that cloud and that rain in
01:22the
01:22south clearing away. And actually, for many, it's going to be dry and there will be a lot of clear
01:28sky. There will also be a few showers dotted around to some coastal parts, and these could
01:33have a wintry element to them. But for most, it's going to be dry with those clear skies. And with
01:38that
01:38colder air that's coming through, well, as you will expect, temperatures are going to drop. It's going to be a
01:44very
01:44cold night indeed. Much colder than we've seen recently, with temperatures widely falling a few
01:50degrees below freezing, even in towns and cities, just some towards the south, holding up that little
01:55bit above. But some parts in Scotland could get into negative double figures. As a result, there's
02:01going to be widespread frost and widespread ice. Some difficult icy conditions first thing tomorrow
02:07morning. The flip side of that, though, there will be plenty of sunshine on offer. A bright start,
02:13a cold, crisp one, but a bright one. Lots of blue skies, much more than we've seen, well, for quite
02:19a while. And then, yes, we're going to see some high-level cloud coming in from the west as we
02:23go
02:23through the afternoon. So the sunshine is going to turn a bit milky. But towards the east, where maybe
02:28it'll be a bit cloudy to start here, the sunshine should last for that little bit longer. It is,
02:34though, going to be quite chilly. Obviously, the sunshine will make it feel quite nice for many of us.
02:38But temperatures are a few degrees down compared to average and a few degrees down compared to today
02:43for quite a few of us, mid-possibly high single figures and mid-single figures, really, for most
02:49of us. Later on tomorrow, there's cloud, there's rain that's coming in from the west, and that's
02:54going to sweep its way through overnight. And as it's hitting that colder air, there's a reasonable
02:58chance that we're going to see some fairly significant snow across some northern and eastern parts,
03:03particularly the higher ground, but some to lower levels. Definitely not out of the question.
03:07And then some blustery, showery weather following in behind. For more information about what we can
03:12expect through this weekend, well, make sure you follow us on YouTube or subscribe, and then you'll
03:17never miss an update. I'll see you again soon. Bye-bye.
