13 February - National evening forecast presented by Alex Burkill.
Transcript
00:00Hello again. Things are going to be largely clear, but also pretty cold as we go through the rest of
00:06Friday and overnight into Saturday.
00:08There's already cold air across the northern parts at the moment, and there's a frontal system bringing cloud and rain
00:14to central southern England.
00:15That's clearing way towards the south, allowing for that cold air to become more widespread.
00:20And we do have a ridge of high pressure quietening things down.
00:23That's going to bring plenty of sunshine as we go into Saturday, but it doesn't last long before another weather
00:28system comes in from the west.
00:30And as that hits against that cold air across us, well, yes, it's going to bring some rain, but also
00:35significantly some snow to northern and eastern parts.
00:38More on that in a second. For the time being, yes, we do still have a bit of cloud, a
00:42bit of rain, even a little bit of hill snow across central southern parts of England and Wales through Friday
00:47evening.
00:47But that clears away, and then across much of the country, it's looking dry, lots of clear skies.
00:52A few showers dotted around, perhaps towards some eastern coastal parts, but most places staying dry through the early hours
00:59of Saturday morning.
01:00And with that cold air, well, you guessed it, it is going to turn cold.
01:04Widely, temperatures dropping below freezing, just about holding up above towards the south, southeast.
01:09But most places seeing temperatures falling sub-zero.
01:13In fact, we could get to negative double figures in some parts of Scotland.
01:16And then that brings the risk of some pretty harsh ice, so harsh frost, and then some difficult icy conditions
01:23could be pretty treacherous for driving and even walking on some slippery surfaces first thing tomorrow.
01:29But the flip side is there will be plenty of sunshine on offer.
01:32Most places having a dry, sunny morning.
01:35Quite a crisp morning, but lots of sunshine.
01:38Bit of cloud towards east Anglia, and then as we go into the afternoon, from the west, we're going to
01:42see cloud arriving.
01:44Initially, it's going to be quite high-level cloud, so really it's just going to turn the sun a bit
01:48milky, a bit hazy.
01:49But then the cloud will thicken as we start to see that band of rain that I mentioned earlier starting
01:54to make its way in.
01:56All the while towards the east, clinging on to that blue sky for that little bit longer, making the most
02:00of that Valentine's Day sunshine.
02:03Temperatures are going to be a little bit below average for the time of year, markedly colder than it has
02:08been recently for many of us.
02:10But most of us will take that because of the fact that we'll get to see some of that sunshine
02:15instead.
02:16Then, as we go through the end of the day on Saturday and overnight into Sunday, this band of rain
02:22makes its way across.
02:23For most of us, it's going to bring rain, but the rain could be quite heavy.
02:27And then across a large chunk of the country, over higher ground, snow quite readily.
02:33But even to lower levels, we could see some snow over parts of northern eastern England and through a large
02:38swathe of Scotland as well.
02:40We're talking maybe 10 to 15 centimetres above 300 to 400 metres, and to lower levels, a few centimetres of
02:48snow possible.
02:49So that could cause some problems first thing on Sunday morning.
02:52And there will be some strong winds mixed in with it, so it is going to feel pretty unpleasant indeed
02:57if you're heading out during the early hours.
02:59Quite a change from the settled sunny picture that we have through the middle of Saturday.
03:04But with the cloud, the rain is not going to be as cold, so ice less of an issue for
03:10many of us first thing on Sunday morning.
03:12But it's just going to be cloudy and quite wet and windy instead.
03:17Then through the day itself, the band of rain clears away towards the east, something a bit showery, also with
03:23some bright sunny spells following in behind.
03:25But worth noting, swathes of wet weather making their way in, and some of that could be quite heavy as
03:30well.
03:31Temperatures up a little bit, about, well, closer to average for the time of year, just about getting to double
03:36figures towards the south-southwest.
03:38But there will be some strong gusty winds at times as well, so that will make it feel a little
03:42bit colder than those temperatures may suggest.
03:45Then there's more changeable weather to come as we go into next week.
03:49But if you subscribe to our YouTube channel, well, you'll never miss an update, and you'll stay on top of
03:53things.
03:53See you again soon. Bye-bye.
