05 February - National afternoon forecast presented by Alex Burkill.
Transcript
00:00Hello. Very good day to you. Many people are crying out for some dry weather, but there's not a huge amount of that to come as we go through the rest of this week and even into the weekend.
00:10Currently, there is an area of low pressure to the southwest of us, and it's this that's bringing a lot of cloudy wet weather.
00:15Various occluded fronts pushing their way across the UK, but also notice tightly packed isobars across the north showing that we have some strong easterly winds coming in,
00:25and also cold air, increasingly cold air as we go through today across northern parts, so feeling pretty raw and increasing amounts of hillsnow developing as well.
00:34But it is a cloudy, wet picture then for many of us, some persistent at times heavy rain across much of England, Wales, Northern Ireland,
00:42and then we have some hillsnow across parts of northern England and also eastern Scotland.
00:46The driest, brightest places through today will be across western, northwestern Scotland, where there should be some glimmers of sunshine.
00:53There are a number of warnings out at the moment. A rain warning affecting parts of Wales and south-southwestern England could see 40-50 millimetres of rain,
01:01perhaps building up here as we go through Thursday and into Friday, and the ground is so very saturated, so some further flooding is possible.
01:09Also, some high rainfall totals across eastern parts of Northern Ireland, in particular over eastern facing upslopes over the Morns,
01:16and the Antrim Hills could see maybe 60-80 millimetres through today, so a substantial amount.
01:22And then watch out for some further snow building up, increasing amounts of snow building up as we go through this evening and overnight and into Friday.
01:30Over higher ground, we're talking above 250-300 metres, we could see a few centimetres accumulating,
01:35and above 500 metres or so, we could see maybe 10-15 centimetres of snow, so enough to cause some disruption here.
01:42Also, some hill snow over parts of Scotland, but less likely to be impactful.
01:46Temperatures in the south, just about getting into double figures, feeling pretty unpleasant with the cloud and the rain around.
01:51Further north, a bit colder than this, I showed you that colder air, and worth factoring in that we have these brisk easterly winds coming in,
01:59so it's going to feel even colder, particularly across areas exposed to those easterly winds, feeling a few degrees below freezing, so pretty raw indeed.
02:07Not a huge amount changes as we go through the end of the day and overnight.
02:12Still, some further hill snow across parts of northern England and eastern parts of Scotland,
02:17and for many, it's staying cloudy.
02:19There'll be further rain around as well all the time, western parts of Scotland staying that little bit drier with some clearer skies.
02:25Because of the cloud and rain, temperature's not dropping a huge amount, particularly in the south,
02:29but further north, we do have that colder air around, so where we get any breaks in the cloud,
02:34and if you have shelter from those brisk easterly winds where it could be a bit chilly, it could be some frost in a few places.
02:41And then Friday, well, again, another cloudy, wet day for many of us.
02:46Further rain across much of the country.
02:49Still some hill snow, but perhaps a little bit less than we're seeing through this evening and overnight.
02:55And more heavy rain coming in from the southwest, turning a bit more showery, so breaking up,
02:59but there could be some rumbles of thunder mixed in with this before the chance of a bit of sunshine may be developing
03:04over some parts of Devon and Cornwall as we go later on in the afternoon.
03:09Temperatures for many will be relatively similar to today, but the winds in the north will be easing ever so slightly,
03:16so perhaps feeling slightly less raw, a little bit milder than today for a few places here.
03:21Into the weekend, and there's more cloudy, often quite wet weather to come.
03:25It's perhaps not looking as wet as it has been recently, but still in parts of the southwest and perhaps the northeast,
03:31there's going to be some more persistent rain pushing through.
03:34Yes, it is going to be largely cloudy. There may be some sunshine at times.
03:38And whilst it's going to be a bit milder, particularly across northern parts than it has been of late,
03:42and also a little bit less windy, still the potential for some strong winds towards the northeast of the UK at times.
03:48For more information about what we can expect through this weekend, well, check out our weekend weather forecast,
03:53which will be available on YouTube. Alex Deacon will be bringing you to that later on. Bye-bye.
