05 February - National evening forecast presented by Alex Burkill.
Transcript
00:00Hello again. There's more wet weather to come for many of us through the end of the weekend,
00:05into the weekend, plenty of rain around and some strong winds as well coming in from the
00:10east across northern parts. And I did just want to highlight a bit of a north-south contrast
00:15in our temperatures at the moment. Much chillier air in the north, milder in the south, but
00:19it's this chillier air in the north which is leading to some fairly significant hill
00:23snow building up through the rest of today and overnight into Friday. But actually, as
00:28we head towards the weekend, there's slightly milder air in the south, that winds out, and
00:31so in the north, temperatures are going to be rising. But before all that, yes, a cloudy
00:36wet picture for many of us overnight. Like I said, some significant hill snow over the higher
00:41ground of parts of northern England and some parts of Scotland as well could cause some
00:45disruption. All the while, we also have rain continuing over parts of northern Ireland
00:48and particularly southern southwestern England and also parts of Wales, and that's also going
00:52to lead to some issues. The ground's so very saturated at the moment that we could see some
00:56further flooding. There could be some travel disruption in places as well. But because
01:01it is cloudy and it's wet, for many, it is going to be a relatively mild night, particularly
01:05towards the south. Further north, a little bit chillier. In fact, some parts of Scotland
01:09could be a couple of degrees colder than last night. So a bit of frost in a few places, particularly
01:14in areas where we get some clearer skies, so towards the west, and also areas sheltered from
01:18that pretty brisk or even strong easterly wind. So for many, tomorrow, another cloudy day.
01:25There will also be further rain around, quite persistent, quite heavy over parts of Northern
01:29Ireland, central northern England, some heavy bursts of rain here. Further southwest, showery
01:34bursts, so breaking up a little bit compared to the persistent rain that we've seen of late.
01:39So spells of rain coming through, but some of them could be heavy and there could be some
01:43rumbles of thunder mixed in with them as well. But with that, also chance of some bright,
01:48maybe even sunny spells developing across parts of the southwest later on. That'll be a bit
01:52of a change to what we've seen recently. Meanwhile, across eastern parts of Scotland,
01:55we have rain coming in, less snow than we will have seen through today. Like I said,
02:00the milder air coming up from the south. And across western parts of Scotland, we stick with
02:04the drier, slightly brighter theme. Temperatures generally around average, maybe a little bit
02:10higher towards the south, could get to highs around 12, maybe 13 Celsius further north. It's still a
02:17chilly feel to things. The wind's ever so slightly less strong than on Thursday, but nonetheless,
02:22they are going to make it feel a bit chilly at times. Then as we go overnight Friday and into
02:27Saturday, we stick with the cloudy, wet theme across the northern half of the UK. More rain to
02:31come here. Further south, there will be some drier, brighter or clearer weather for a time. But then
02:36we have some heavier bursts of rain coming in from the southwest. Low pressure getting nearby,
02:41so the wind's picking up as well. Where we get any clearer skies, there could be some mist and fog
02:46developing. So do watch out for that. That could cause some problems, particularly the further away
02:49from those stronger winds towards both the southwest and also towards the northeast. Temperatures
02:54again, well, for many, where we have the brisk winds towards the southwest, not dropping a huge amount.
02:59But if you do get any clearer skies, shelter from the wind, where it could get close to freezing,
03:03perhaps across parts of Scotland, not quite as chilly as this coming night. But nonetheless, a bit of a chill
03:08for some frost likely to be confined just to the most prone spots. Then Saturday, perhaps a slightly
03:14wet day for some places. Some drier weather across northern Ireland, parts of northern and eastern
03:19England, even some sunshine breaking through at times. But there will be more wet weather coming
03:23in from the southwest, some heavy bursts of rain, and all the while, there'll be some blustery winds
03:27as well. Also some blustery winds towards the northeast, and we keep with some rain pushing into
03:32eastern parts of Scotland. It feels like it's been pretty relentless across parts of eastern Scotland for
03:37quite a while, and there is more rain to come as we go through this weekend. The one difference,
03:41I suppose, across Scotland will be a greater chance of a bit of rain breaching across some
03:46parts of western Scotland compared to what we've seen through the last day or so. Temperatures again,
03:51generally near normal for the time of year, ranging from highs of around 5 to 8 Celsius in the north
03:55to around 9 to 11, possibly 12 Celsius further south. More cloudy wet weather to come as we go through
04:01into Sunday. For more information about that, well, why don't you check out our weekend forecasts,
04:05which Alex Deacon has brought to you today. Bye-bye.
