00:00There's been so much hot air across the UK so far this week. In some places, things have turned a
00:06little bit fresher already, but the hot air is still lingering in the southeast at the moment, and actually it's
00:12going to linger here into the weekend as well.
00:15We do have a weather system, a cold front that is going to push its way eastwards, and whilst we
00:19do have some fresher air already, there's even fresher air coming in behind it, so we are going to see
00:24a drop in temperatures as we go towards Sunday.
00:27But let's look at the detail. Through this evening, any of today's showers in the southeast, they will clear away,
00:32and the rain across Scotland, well, overnight that's going to become confined to Orkney and Shetland, leaving a lot of
00:38dry weather.
00:39Clearer skies towards the east, cloudier further west, and that's because we have this weather system that I highlighted earlier
00:45making its way in.
00:46That's going to bring some rain to mainly Northern Ireland, but also some parts of Western Scotland as we head
00:51towards dawn on Saturday morning.
00:53With that slightly fresher air that we have across us, and some clearer skies, particularly towards eastern areas, we are
00:59going to see temperatures through Friday night into Saturday dropping a little bit lower than they have done recently.
01:06Good news for many people, it's going to be slightly less uncomfortable for sleeping, and it is just going to
01:11be less muggy, less sticky as well.
01:14So Saturday then, a bit of a northwest-southeast split, plenty of cloud, plenty of rain across Scotland and Northern
01:20Ireland.
01:21The rain on the initial band doesn't look especially heavy, we're talking maybe 10mm or so in some places, but
01:27behind it, there could be some convection building up, and that could lead to some heavy, thundery downpours.
01:33We're talking 20mm or so in a very short period of time, and as well as the heavy rain, watch
01:39out for frequent lightning, there could be some large hail mixed in with this, and some gusty winds, so some
01:45hazards to be aware of.
01:46Meanwhile, across England and Wales, actually it looks like a fine day, lots of sunshine, and because there is still
01:52that hot air clinging on in the southeast, and more sunshine around on Saturday compared to Friday,
01:58here I'm expecting temperatures to be a little bit higher, 28, maybe 29 Celsius, that kind of thing.
02:04So pretty exceptional for the end of May, just not as exceptional as the hot weather that we had earlier
02:09on in the week.
02:11With the fine sunny weather across England and Wales, worth bearing in mind that pollen levels are going to be
02:15high, or very high, for many places in this part of the country.
02:19Grass pollen now really starting to take hold, and that's what the majority of hay fever sufferers are affected by.
02:25Lower levels further north, but low doesn't mean none, so if you are really susceptible to hay fever, you may
02:31still be feeling some impacts.
02:34The cloud and the rain across Scotland and Northern Ireland continues as we go overnight Saturday into Sunday.
02:41Watch out for some heavier bursts.
02:42Like I said, they could be thundery at times, with some lightning and some hail mixed in.
02:47And some of the rain will push into parts of northern and western England and Wales, but towards the southeast,
02:52staying drier with some clearer skies.
02:54Because of the cloud and the outbreaks of rain, there perhaps will be, well, temperatures perhaps not dropping as low
03:01as they will this coming night.
03:03So a slightly warmer night, not quite as warm or as muggy as the nights that we had earlier on
03:07in the week.
03:08But yes, temperatures may be ever so slightly higher than through Friday night.
03:11And then through Sunday, well, you can see plenty of showery bursts of rain around.
03:16Lots and lots of showers.
03:18The heaviest, the most frequent, the greatest chance of thunder showers will be across northern areas.
03:24And towards the south-southeast, a greatest chance of staying largely dry.
03:28But even here, there will be some showers pushing their way through.
03:31They're just going to be more hit and miss in nature and shorter-lived, that kind of thing.
03:36As I mentioned, we do have fresher air coming in, so temperatures for many of us will be down several
03:41degrees on Sunday compared to earlier on.
03:44But most notably in the southeast, where we say goodbye to the high 20s, and instead we're looking at low,
03:49possibly mid-20s, that kind of thing.
03:52Still above average for the time of year.
03:54Now, as we head through the end of meteorological spring and into the start of meteorological summer, well, the weather
04:00takes a bit of a change.
04:02In as much as we're going to see fresher air coming in, notice the wind direction coming from the southwest.
04:07And with all that, some fairly wet weather as well.
04:10I think that through much of next week, it's going to be quite unsettled.
04:14So watch out for some rain.
04:15Temperatures only look like they're going to be around average.
04:17But as I mentioned before, that's quite a drop compared to the exceptional heat that we've had through much of
04:23this week.
04:24We will, of course, be keeping you up to date.
