00:00Hello there, welcome to your Wednesday morning weather update from the Met Office.
00:04We've seen rain and hill snow push northwards overnight.
00:08So some tricky conditions if you're travelling first thing this morning.
00:11We do have a snow and ice warning through the next few hours,
00:13the northern part of the Welsh mountains as well as Pennine districts.
00:17Further north, that snow has fallen even at modest hills and will continue to do so through this morning.
00:24We've seen some drifting as well as some blizzards over the higher routes with that strong southeasterly wind.
00:29We also have a rain warning through this morning until lunchtime across the eastern side of Aberdeenshire.
00:36There's been a lot of rain recently with this real persistent southeasterly wind
00:39and it will continue so there could be surface water issues here as well.
00:43We have a marked contrast in temperature through today and into tomorrow
00:47with cold air streaming in across much of Scotland.
00:51Milder conditions further south and southwest and with that low pressure sitting towards the southwest of the UK.
00:58This morning then you can see where the wet weather is, where the snow is, particularly over higher routes.
01:04Dry skies perhaps for the Outer Hebrides but a little rain just moving in across western parts of Scotland
01:08and also Northern Ireland seeing it particularly towards the north as well as the east of the province.
01:14Outbreaks of rain continue across northern England with snow over the highest routes such as the M62
01:19and you can see further south it's a mostly dry start to the day.
01:23Low misty cloud as well though so a murky start with some showers just filing in across the west country
01:29clipping the far south of Wales.
01:31Bit of a breeze here hopping over the moors.
01:34Elsewhere that strong southeasterly wind causing problems with that drifting through the first few hours
01:40and then just some high waves associated with it as well and also a cold wind chill.
01:45Through the morning into the afternoon you can see this cloud and rain is pushing northwards
01:50so we will see a clearance coming in across the far south of Scotland, Northern England and Northern Ireland.
01:56Still some cloud just shrouding the Pennines and a little bit of rain can't be ruled out here
02:01and snow over the tops of the mountains, that snow line has risen through the day.
02:06Rain also for the western side of Scotland continues also across Orkney as well as Shetland.
02:12In Shetland we are likely to see a mix of rain and snow.
02:15At the same time some dry skies to end the day today across more central and southern areas
02:20but notice some rain returning towards the far south west later.
02:25Temperatures here 10 degrees Celsius but only 4 or 5 across more northern and eastern areas
02:30add on the strength of the wind, it's going to feel even colder than that.
02:34Now through Wednesday evening and overnight we continue with that rain and hill snow
02:38across central and northern areas of Scotland.
02:40At the same time wind and outbreaks of rain arrive across central and southern parts of England and Wales
02:46and gradually edge their way northwards.
02:49So through the night there is a chance that we will see a little bit of rain,
02:54showery rain just moving in across Pennine districts and again it could turn a little wintry in places
02:59and towards the south there yes that rain will continue as the winds pick up a little strength along the south coast.
03:06Northern Ireland seeing some dry skies through the night into the early hours of the morning
03:11but a bit of a damp start to the day across central and eastern areas of England.
03:14Certainly central and eastern parts of Scotland towards the north there
03:17yes that rain will be fairly persistent and it will feel cold.
03:21Here's your outlook through Thursday then.
03:23The jet stream is to the south of the UK
03:25so the low pressure systems are developing on the northern side of that jet
03:29towards more southern and southwestern areas of the country
03:33and what that means with that temperature contrast as well
03:36further spells of rain just swirling around that centre of the low
03:39some strong winds from time to time into Friday as well as the weekend
03:43and slow moving weather fronts extending across the country.
03:47So all in all things still look unsettled through as we head into the weekend.
03:51Through Thursday morning you can see where the rain is covering most of Wales
03:56the Midlands southwards.
03:59Elsewhere some showery bursts with some hill snow across northern England
04:02as well as central and northern eastern parts of Scotland.
04:06The rain pushes northwards through the day
04:08so a messy picture, a wet picture with clouds and feeling cold
04:12particularly with that south easterly wind
04:14which will pick up some strength as we head through Thursday.
04:17Here's that low pressure, you can see the rain swirling around it
04:20we'll continue to see that southeasterly across the northern half of the UK
04:24gusty over the highlands
04:25and again the chance of some hill snow as we enter the weekend
04:28and further showery bursts towards the south as well.
04:31Wherever you are, take care.
