23 March - National Morning Forecast presented by Clare Nasir.
Transcript
00:00Hello there and a very good morning to you. On this Tuesday morning we have rain, showers and some drier
00:06weather across more southern areas. It then turns colder. Let me take you through the bigger picture. A succession of
00:11weather fronts will bring some more intense bursts of rain and more persistent wet weather, particularly to Wales and northern
00:18England as we head through the day. The air then turns colder from the north. Lots of showers clustering together,
00:24increasingly the risk of snow, particularly above around 400 metres.
00:28Low pressure sits towards the north of the UK, delivering much colder air into Wednesday, so everywhere will feel colder
00:35with significant wind chill. And with that, the risk of those showers, hail and again some mountain and hill snow.
00:42Through Wednesday into Thursday we do have a ridge coming in from the west-southwest. And what that will mean,
00:49under some clearer skies you'll see touch of frost, even the risk of some ice before yet again it turns
00:56unsettled.
00:58With a thickening cloud bringing outbreaks of rain. And the winds will pick up as well. In fact, it is
01:04windy this morning. We've seen gales overnight across the far north as well as the west of Scotland and with
01:11that clustering of showers.
01:13The rain now sits towards the south of Northern Ireland, extending towards the north-west of England, with further showers
01:20moving in across the north and the west of the province. Some clearer skies towards eastern parts of Scotland, but
01:26for England and Wales there's more in the way of cloud.
01:28This is the rain which will bump into Wales as well as northern England and sink southwards through the day.
01:34In fact, a fair amount of cloud further south, a blustery start to the day here. A little rain in
01:40the mix where the cloud is thick enough and perhaps some breaks in shelter towards more eastern areas, allowing for
01:46some hazy sunshine.
01:48So let's just pick up on that weather front which this morning will just sit across the southern parts of
01:54Northern Ireland, Northern England as well as Wales.
01:56These showers here will be heavy clustering together to form longer spells of rain and also with the risk of
02:03hail as well as thunder.
02:05Notice through the afternoon though, this rain will intensify along the front, particularly for Wales and Northern England, edging down
02:12towards the North Midlands later.
02:14And the winds will be relentless coming in from the south-west across much of England and Wales. But notice
02:20the orientation of the wind across Scotland and Northern Ireland is changing.
02:24The air is colder behind these weather systems, allowing for some colder air, significant wind chill through Wednesday and also
02:32those strong winds delivering a lot of showers.
02:35So let's look at those temperatures in contrast to the north of Scotland where we'll see 7 or 8 degrees
02:40Celsius, 9 for Northern Ireland, Central Belt, across more southern areas where you will see some hazy sunshine through this
02:48afternoon, 13 to 15.
02:50But quite unpleasant if you're stepping out through this evening rush hour, particularly across this zone here where you have
02:57that cloud and that rain only slowly edging down towards the Midlands by around 8, 9 o'clock.
03:03Along the front, the winds will be strong and this wind will be cold further north coming in from the
03:08north-west.
03:09Through the night then you can see a rush of showers extending across the country into the early hours of
03:15the morning.
03:16Notice increasingly turning to snow, particularly across the hills of Northern Ireland and Northern England, the hills and mountains of
03:23Scotland.
03:24And yes, that wind will really be noticeable as we head through into Wednesday morning.
03:31Temperatures then overnight, dipping down close to freezing across the north and further south, low single figures as well.
03:38So a cold start to the day and you'll run into those heavy squally showers as well.
03:44So through Wednesday morning, let's pick up on those showers and that wind which continues to march round to a
03:50north-northwesterly direction.
03:52These showers prone spots will be Northern Ireland, northern western parts of Scotland, the Cheshire Gap down towards the Midlands
03:58as well.
03:58There could be some sunshine in between but a significant wind chill on Wednesday.
04:03Feeling cold in that wind and again the risk of snow, particularly over the hills and mountains.
04:09Temperatures then coming in 6 or 7 across the far north.
04:12The central belt will be 8 as well as Northern Ireland, northern parts of Wales.
04:16But further south you could just about see 10 degrees Celsius.
04:20So relative to last week where we saw some warmth in the air, a bit of a shock to the
04:24system this week.
04:25Wherever you are, take care and I'll see you again soon.
