12 January - National Evening Forecast presented by Alex Burkill
Transcript
00:00Hello again. Some places will have a bit of wet weather as we go through the end of Monday and into Tuesday.
00:05Other places will stay dry, but there could be some mist and fog patches around.
00:10Most areas are currently under milder air. You probably noticed that there was a milder feel to things through today.
00:16And that milder air sticks around for a little while, but a front pushing southeastwards as we go through Tuesday
00:20will bring something a little bit colder behind it.
00:24And then with a ridge of high pressure building as we go later Tuesday and into Wednesday,
00:29that means we're going to have quite quiet conditions on Wednesday morning.
00:33So watch out for the potential for some fairly widespread frost,
00:37despite the fact that this week on the whole is a fair bit milder than last week.
00:41Looking at the rain as we go through the next few hours or so,
00:45and there's a front pushing across parts of Northern Ireland and into central southern Scotland,
00:50bringing a fair amount of rain here.
00:52And across parts of northern England and north Wales,
00:54we could see a few outbreaks of rain as well through the night.
00:57Across central southern parts of England, staying dry generally here, but increasingly cloudy.
01:03Some of that cloud could be quite low.
01:05There could be some mist patches around as well, so quite murky at times.
01:08And then across the northern half of Scotland, really, clearer skies.
01:12And with these clearer skies, well, temperatures are going to drop,
01:15whilst for many it's going to be a pretty mild night for the time of year.
01:19Across northern parts of Scotland, temperatures dropping to around, if not below, freezing in quite a few spots.
01:23So there will be some frost, also some icy patches to watch out for.
01:27We do actually have an ice warning out across central and northern and eastern parts of Scotland,
01:32because there will be some difficult driving conditions, also some slippery pavements as well.
01:37So do take care first thing on Tuesday morning.
01:40Otherwise, as we go through Tuesday then, a bright, cold, frosty, icy start across some parts of north and eastern Scotland.
01:46Otherwise, rain pushing its way through across many parts of Scotland,
01:49some of that falling as sleet or snow over the higher ground after a wet start across northern Ireland.
01:53That rain will be pushing southeastwards across parts of England and Wales.
01:58And then all the time, there's also another front that's coming up from the south,
02:01and that's going to bring some relatively heavy bursts of rain across initially southern parts of England,
02:06but then later into more central and eastern areas as well.
02:09Those two frontal systems kind of merging together as we go through the afternoon.
02:13Behind the front towards the northwest, we do actually have clearer air coming in.
02:18Yes, cooler or colder air, but also clearer.
02:20So some sunshine breaking through across parts of Northern Ireland and Scotland as we go through the afternoon.
02:26Also, though, a scattering of showers, and these could bring some sleet or snow over modest higher ground.
02:31Like I said, we have colder air coming in from the northwest.
02:34So whilst in the southeast, it's going to be relatively mild again.
02:38Temperatures just about getting into double figures once more.
02:40Further north and west, those temperatures are going to be down a few degrees compared to Monday.
02:47Later on, as we go through Tuesday evening, the cloud and the rain across much of England and Wales,
02:52that does clear away towards the east.
02:54We have that ridge of high pressure building that I highlighted earlier on.
02:57And so the weather is going to quieten down, not turning totally dry.
03:01Still a few showers across parts of western Scotland, maybe perhaps a few fringing into Northern Ireland.
03:06But generally, it's going to be largely dry with lots of clear skies as we go through the early hours of Wednesday morning.
03:13With those clear skies, the lighter winds, and that colder air that's coming in across us,
03:19well, no wonder it's going to be a cold start to the day.
03:22Fairly widespread frost.
03:23It won't be as harsh a frost as some of the nights that we saw last week.
03:27And whilst there will be some icy patches around as well,
03:31they're not going to be as severe as some of the ice that we saw last week as well.
03:34But nonetheless, a bit of a cold, frosty, perhaps icy start to the day for many of us on Wednesday.
03:39But with that, a largely bright start for most as well, albeit across parts of Kent,
03:43clinging on to some cloudy, damp weather for a little while.
03:46But even here, that should clear away.
03:47A lot of bright, sunny weather as we go through the bulk of Wednesday,
03:50staying sunniest towards the east.
03:53Further west, we have another front that's going to arrive,
03:56bringing increasing amounts of cloud and some rain initially across Northern Ireland,
03:59but also pushing into western parts of Scotland, England and Wales as well as we go through later on.
04:06Now, we do have that colder air across us.
04:07So despite the fact that there will be a decent amount of sunshine across eastern areas,
04:11temperatures are going to be lower than on Tuesday.
04:14Mid-single figures really in a fair few places.
04:17That's the maximum temperatures.
04:18Further west, something a little bit milder coming in with this front,
04:22but temperatures not jumping up a huge amount.
04:25Then, that front does gradually edge its way a little bit further eastwards as we go through later Wednesday,
04:31but it fizzles out.
04:33Nonetheless, it will bring some rain and perhaps a little bit of sleetle snow over higher ground.
04:37What our attention's more turning to is a developing area of low pressure
04:41that could track its way northeastwards across the UK as we go through Thursday.
04:46Now, if this comes off, it would bring a spell of pretty wet and windy weather across many areas,
04:52could cause some problems.
04:53But there's a lot of uncertainty as to the positioning, the track, and the development of this feature.
04:59And so it's something we're keeping an eye out for,
05:01but it's no guarantee that we're going to have the particularly unsettled weather
05:04as we go through later this week.
05:07For more information about how that's developing,
05:09well, why don't you check out the week ahead forecast with Annie,
05:13or maybe check out the deep dive forecast, which we'll be bringing to you tomorrow as well.
05:17Bye-bye.
