16 January - National weather forecast presented by Alex Burkill.
Transcript
00:00It could be quite murky, quite misty and foggy for some of us through tonight.
00:04That's because we have had some blustery, windy weather across parts of the southwest through today,
00:09but actually the low pressure that's led to that is filling.
00:13It's becoming less intense, so the flow is going to become more slack as we go through into the weekend,
00:18allowing for some pretty poor visibility issues both tonight and also on Saturday night into Sunday as well.
00:24But looking at the details, and there will also be a few outbreaks of rain around,
00:29the showers always mainly towards the west and the southwest,
00:32but actually as we go through the early hours of tomorrow through Saturday morning,
00:36there will be some sherry bursts across some more central, perhaps even eastern parts of England,
00:41pushing up into Scotland as well.
00:43Like I said, some murkiness, some low cloud leading to mists and fog in places,
00:48particularly towards eastern parts, the further away from that low that you are.
00:52But actually across some parts of northern Scotland, down the western side of Wales and southwest England,
00:57and clearer skies here could allow for a few fog patches to develop in a few spots as well.
01:02And across northern Scotland, where we get those clear skies, I'm expecting a bit of a frost,
01:07perhaps generally temperatures not quite as low as last night because there will be a fair bit more cloud murkiness around,
01:14but nonetheless a bit chilly in a few spots, just a bit milder towards the south-southeast.
01:18Then through tomorrow, a bit of a slow start for some of us.
01:21If you've got that low cloud, that fog, well, a lot of the fog will lift, but it may take quite a while to do so.
01:26And in places, particularly towards the east, that low cloud, that cloud is going to stick around,
01:31so staying pretty grey.
01:32Otherwise, and there's sherry bursts of rain feeding their way northwards,
01:36so pushing into parts of Scotland.
01:37Could be some sleet, some snow over the high ground here, especially initially as it makes its way,
01:42and then slightly milder air coming in, so probably less snow as we go later on.
01:48And then continuing with some sherry bursts of rain, particularly across parts of eastern Northern Ireland,
01:53maybe fringes of western Wales and southwest England as well.
01:57Otherwise, there will be some dry, bright weather at times, especially across central western parts,
02:03some glimmers of sunshine and temperatures, well, about what you'd expect for this time of year.
02:08High single figures, maybe just about getting into double digits towards the southwest.
02:12A couple of degrees lower than this further north, but actually probably a degree or so higher than today.
02:17And as I mentioned, temperatures rising ever so slightly as we go through the day.
02:22Then that sherry rain and perhaps wintry mix over the highest ground of Scotland,
02:26that clears away northwards as we go overnight Saturday and into Sunday.
02:31And for many, it is then going to be largely dry through much of the night on Sunday.
02:35And as I mentioned before, again, the risk of some low cloud, murkiness, fog in places.
02:42So some poor visibility mainly towards the east, but even across some western parts where we get those clear skies,
02:48we could see some fog patches developing yet again.
02:51Then later on in the night, as we head through the early hours of Sunday morning,
02:55a spell of rain pushing its way in from the southeast.
02:58Temperatures for most, again, not especially low as we go through Saturday night into Sunday,
03:03but across some northern western parts where we get those clearer skies,
03:07temperatures likely to be a little bit on the low side.
03:09Around, if not a little bit below freezing, could just drop a minus two, minus three,
03:14maybe minus four Celsius in some of the shelter glens of Scotland if you get those clearer skies.
03:20So a bit of a wet start across southeastern areas on Sunday morning.
03:24Some damp weather here, and that is likely to push its way a little bit further north
03:27and a bit further west into parts of Wales, southwest England, across northern England,
03:32and later across eastern parts of Scotland.
03:34Elsewhere, some drier weather on offer.
03:36So across much of Scotland actually looking largely fine,
03:40albeit showers affecting some western places, much of northern Ireland mostly fine,
03:44and also across east Anglia and Kent, likely to see the rain clearing through,
03:48and then brighter skies developing into the afternoon.
03:51Temperatures, well, again, near average for the time of year,
03:54ranging from highs of around five to six in the north to around eight to ten further south.
04:01Then as we go towards the beginning of next week, and there's more changeable weather to come.
04:07There will be various pressure systems, fronts coming in from the west,
04:11and they'll bring some rain, even some blustery winds.
04:13But exactly how much of a progress they make across the UK,
04:17well, that's all going to be under the influence of high pressure towards the east of us.
04:21It could be quite a big blocking high, and we're likely to feel the influence of that more greater
04:27as we go through the week, and so that's definitely something to keep on top of.
04:31Whatever you're up to, have a lovely evening, and I'll speak to you again soon.
04:34Bye-bye.
