30 December - National weather forecast presented by Clare Nasir.
Transcript
00:00Hello there and a very good evening to you on this Tuesday evening as we enter the last day of 2025 so the air remains cold but becoming increasingly colder as we head into 2026.
00:12High pressure still in charge through the first part of New Year's Eve but then the winds pick up, we'll see showers in the north and those showers increasingly turning to snow through New Year's Eve into New Year's Day with a warning anywhere from central and northern areas of Scotland towards Shetland.
00:28Severe gales towards the northeast as low pressure sits across towards the east Scandinavia high pressure across Greenland.
00:36The air then turns cold and sinks right the way down the country with some wintry showers even further south through the next few days.
00:44For the time being a light breeze particularly across more central and western areas here we could see some freezing fog patches as that frost reforms and becomes severe in one or two spots.
00:55Winds will be stronger across the far north of Scotland expect some showers here and quite gusty down towards the far southwest again with a keen breeze.
01:04But temperatures falling very quickly across the countryside temperatures will be lower than this so I say lowest temperature probably minus five minus six even minus seven degrees Celsius.
01:14So a very cold start to the day come New Year's Eve that frost staying in the ground across many areas as we see those freezing fog patches slowly break up.
01:23Brighter skies across many areas through the morning into the afternoon although showers will gather across the north and the west of Scotland with that brisk wind.
01:31Eventually more clouds across northern Ireland and that cloud rolls in across the north and the west of Wales as well as northern England.
01:38Temperatures struggle wherever you are three four five degrees Celsius perhaps a seven towards the northwest of Scotland but watch out for the wind here.
01:47Now if you are stepping out through New Year's Eve evening you may catch some showers across Scotland they'll be frequent across the north.
01:56Wintry precipitation so snow particularly at elevation but increasingly at lower levels as we enter the first few hours of New Year's Day and 2026.
02:08So showers moving in across northern Ireland, southern Scotland and northern England.
02:13Further south it's a cold evening and yet again we will see some frost, a mix of clouds as well as some clearer skies.
02:21But these winds increasingly turn to gale force across the north and northeast of Scotland with severe gales for Shetland and then also Orkney as those showers push southwards into the early hours of New Year's Day.
02:35So this bank of showers will push towards England and Wales and then more snow showers streaming in with that arctic air as we head through the day.
02:44So expect accumulations with this snow particularly at higher ground but even at lower levels and because of the strength of the wind a significant wind chill and where we see that snow gather also could see it drift.
02:58Temperatures then coming in around two to four five degrees Celsius seven down towards the southwest but add on the strength of the wind is going to feel even colder than that and the risk of ice as well temperatures struggling and then falling quite quickly overnight.
03:14So into the 2nd of January a frosty start expect those snow showers again they'll push in across windward facing coast so you could see some towards the west as well as the northeast.
03:27And here's your outlook through Saturday some brighter skies around a frosty start temperatures still only two three four degrees Celsius and yet again the risk of those snow showers and also advice.
03:37I'll see you later.
