00:00Good evening. The rest of January is set to stay very unsettled and wet, with areas of
00:05low pressure bringing some windy weather at times too.
00:08And why is it so wet at the moment? Well, for that we need to look across the Atlantic
00:11Ocean. We've got very cold air across parts of North America, and where that cold air
00:15is meeting much warmer air to the south, we've got a very strong jet stream, and it's the
00:19jet stream that determines our weather. And for the next few days, a very powerful jet
00:23stream will bring areas of low pressure towards the UK, and those areas of low pressure are
00:27running up against a block of high pressure across Scandinavia, bringing a continuation
00:31of the wet and windy theme to the UK. It's this area of low pressure on Monday night and
00:36into Tuesday that we're most concerned about for bringing some stronger winds, and again
00:40further spells of very heavy rain for many parts of the UK. As well as that, there will
00:43also be some snow across the high ground in the north.
00:47But back to Sunday evening, it's not quite as wet as it has been. Certainly a lot of
00:51cloud around out there at the moment, and generally speaking through the course of the night, parts
00:55of north-east Scotland and the north-east of England, we'll continue to see the most persistent
00:58outbreaks of rain. There will be some snow across the Grampians, as there has been across
01:02most of the weekend. But otherwise, just spits and spots of drizzle here and there, nothing
01:06particularly wet. And there will be one or two clearest zones in the cloud, perhaps across
01:11the west, particularly the south-west of England and western parts of Wales. Here we could see
01:15a few frost and fog patches, and also some clearest skies across the very far north-west
01:20of Scotland. Now it will stay quite windy across more northern parts of the UK, the winds coming
01:25in from a south-eastly direction, but lighter winds for a time elsewhere. And where we do
01:30see those winds drop out, and we see some clear skies, we could see a few places get down close
01:35to freezing. But for most towns and cities, lows of two or three degrees tonight. Now Monday
01:40is expected to get off on a fairly drab and cloudy note for many. Bits and pieces of light
01:45rain and drizzle here and there, but a lot of places will be dry. Some winter showers across the
01:49Pennines and, once again, more prolonged periods of rain and hill snow across the north-east of
01:54Scotland with some fairly brisk south-easterly winds. Out towards the west though, the next
01:58band of heavy rain pushes into Northern Ireland by lunchtime, and then to Wales and the south-west
02:03of England through the afternoon. Accompanied with the heavy rain will be some fairly strong
02:08southerly winds developing, so whilst it will turn into a milder day in the south-west compared
02:13to over the weekend, 10 degrees for example in Plymouth by the afternoon, it's going to feel
02:17pretty unpleasant with the wind and the rain. Now there are weather warnings in place through
02:23the course of Monday afternoon across Northern Ireland and, indeed, through Monday evening,
02:27another weather warning coming into effect across parts of Wales and the south-west of England. So
02:31surface water on the roads, it's been particularly wet of late in the south-west of England, so
02:35saturated ground will lead to some flooding in places as that rain pushes its way eastwards across
02:40southern parts of England. So further flooding in parts of the south of England, in particular,
02:45through Monday night. Other areas will see the rain arrive as well, increasingly strong winds
02:49developing as well, south-easterly winds pushing into parts of Northern Ireland and around kind of
02:55the Irish Sea coasts as well. We're also going to see some hill snow developing across parts of North
03:00Wales, the Pennines, and later in the night across more higher parts of Scotland, perhaps giving
03:055 to 10 centimetres of snow by the morning across the very highest ground. Now it will be a fairly chilly
03:10night but, generally speaking, frost-free. Lows are between 3 and 5 degrees Celsius and temperatures
03:15actually lifting through the night across the south-west of England. Now, Tuesday is going to
03:20be a very unsettled day. Do stay in touch with the weather warnings if you do have any travel plans
03:25because there's going to be a lot of surface water on the roads, some pretty heavy rain around,
03:29particularly in the morning in the south, turning a little bit more showery through the afternoon but
03:33still some very frequent heavy downpours coming through. Further north, a lot of heavy rain and hill snow,
03:39perhaps bringing some travel disruption, particularly on higher level routes, and there will be some
03:43pretty strong winds around as well, particularly out towards the west. Temperatures then pretty
03:50disappointing for the time of year, 3 to 5 degrees Celsius in the north and feeling pretty cold,
03:55particularly underneath the rain and the snow. But actually in the south, despite it being windy
04:00and quite unpleasant, temperatures will actually lift to slightly above average values for the time of year,
04:049 or 10 degrees Celsius. But it will be a windy day. Let's have a look at the wind gusts through
04:09Tuesday because coastal regions are going to see some gale force gusts in places, perhaps even
04:15locally some severe gales. The east of Northern Ireland seems some pretty strong south-easterly winds,
04:19bringing some large waves onto coasts and other northern and western areas of the UK will also see gales at
04:25times. So do stay in touch with the warnings over the next few days if you do have travel plans.
04:29Wednesday looks like being a bit of a mixed day, probably a bit drier compared to recent days.
04:35Some sunshine in the east, but showers in the west. That's about everything from me for now,
