25 December - National Evening Forecast presented by Tom Morgan
Transcript
00:00Merry Christmas.
00:01Despite the cold wind, it's actually been a sunny rather than white Christmas for most
00:05of us out there today.
00:07And that cold wind will continue through the course of this evening and overnight as well.
00:10It's all courtesy of this large area of high pressure that's dominating the UK and northwestern
00:14parts of Europe.
00:15And to the south, we have got a squeeze in the ice bars with the winds coming in from
00:19the east.
00:20So hence the really cold feel, particularly in the south over recent days.
00:24For the next few days, not much changes.
00:26The area of high pressure continues to stay dominant across the UK, bringing a continuation
00:30of the dry and settled theme.
00:32But by early next week, we might just see the winds shift to more of a northerly direction.
00:36And that might just bring temperatures down ever so slightly as we go through next week.
00:40But back to the rest of Christmas Day.
00:42And there are some strong winds in the south and the west, particularly across Wales and
00:45the southwest.
00:46Some gusty conditions, particularly over the hills and around some exposed coasts.
00:50And the winds will stay pretty fresh as we go through the course of tonight as well.
00:5330 to 40mph gusts in some spots.
00:57Probably turning cloudy as well for parts of Wales and southern regions of England as
01:01well.
01:02But further north, where skies are more clear, here we'll see a fairly widespread frost
01:05developing.
01:06Winds lighter further north as well.
01:08And we might well see a few freezing fog patches redeveloping across the Highlands in
01:12the Glens and particularly across the Moray Firth region where we could see temperatures
01:16several degrees below freezing.
01:18In the south though, the breeze just keeping temperatures ever so slightly above freezing probably in the
01:22the main towns and cities.
01:24Nonetheless, it will be a cold start to Boxing Day wherever you are.
01:28Some patchy frost in the south, but still quite a lot of cloud probably across more southern
01:32regions of England and South Wales.
01:34And still pretty breezy.
01:35That wind, a cold easterly as well.
01:38Further north, plenty of sunshine though.
01:40So a great day for getting out and about for a walk to burn off that Christmas Day lunch
01:44perhaps.
01:45Perhaps a bit more in a way of cloud though once again for northeastern parts of Scotland.
01:48And, generally speaking, some patchy cloud at times across more northeastern parts of
01:53England too.
01:54But at least here the winds will be fairly light, so highs of six to seven degrees in
01:59many places.
02:00Although, probably staying much colder if the fog does linger across parts of northern
02:04Scotland.
02:05In the south, temperatures up a degree or so compared to Christmas Day.
02:09And the winds ever so fractionally lighter, so not feeling quite as bitter perhaps in most
02:13places.
02:14As we go through Boxing Day, evening and overnight, not a lot changes.
02:18It will stay dry for the vast majority.
02:20A mixture of cloud and lengthy clear periods.
02:23West skies do stay clear overnight.
02:25We will see some frost once again developing.
02:27But once again, it's southern regions where there will be a bit more in a way of a breeze.
02:31So here, the frost a little bit more patchy in general.
02:35Further towards the north and the west though, west skies are clearer and more widespread
02:37frost for parts of western Scotland and Northern Ireland.
02:40And generally speaking, temperatures falling below freezing in the countryside.
02:45A subtle shift in the weather perhaps as we go into Saturday, with the winds shifting
02:50direction to more of a north-easterly.
02:52That probably bringing more in a way of clouding from the North Sea.
02:55So overall a cloudier day, particularly for more eastern parts of the UK.
03:00But perhaps becoming quite extensive across the Midlands and fringing into parts of Wales
03:04and even the south-west of England by the afternoon.
03:06So overall a duller, greyer day to come and feeling pretty chilly underneath those cloudy
03:11skies.
03:12But I'm still hopeful for western parts of Scotland in particular, but perhaps also western
03:16parts of Wales, the south-west of England and Northern Ireland, there will be at least
03:19some sunshine on offer through the day on Saturday.
03:23And highs here 6 or 7 degrees, not too far away from average.
03:27But where it stays cloudy, it will feel rather chilly.
03:31As we move into Sunday, not a lot of changes overall, but again it's looking at this stage
03:36to be a rather cloudy day for the vast majority.
03:39The best of any breaks, the best of any sunshine perhaps for north-west Wales, parts of north-west
03:44England and certainly western Scotland should fare fairly well with the best of the sunshine
03:48here.
03:49Where it does remain cloudy though, it will feel rather disappointing in Chile.
03:54But again, temperatures 6 to 7 degrees and not quite as windy over the weekend as it
03:58will have been over the last few days in the south.
04:02Whatever you're up to for the rest of Christmas, I do hope you have an enjoyable one and I'll
04:06see you again very soon.
