Midwest and Northeast brace for snow and ice in the days before Christmas

A storm moving east is bringing snow and ice from the Midwest to the Northeast and mid-Atlantic just in time for Christmas Eve.

00:00La Crosse, Wisconsin, on the back side of this system, the snow still falling in areas around

00:06mainly Madison up to Sheboygan and West Bend on the back side of the storm system. Much of

00:12Michigan is seeing some snow from Detroit. South, though, parts of Wayne and Monroe counties,

00:17Lenawee County, seeing a little bit of rain. But the snow is returning to areas just to the north

00:22of Angola, Indiana. So we'll see a little bit of cooler air roll back in on the back side of this.

00:27And again, in the northeast, the bulk of this rolls through tonight. Temperatures in advance,

00:3119 in Burlington. It's still cold there. The warmup has been really slow going in the New

00:37England states, 24 in Boston, a cold time there. 43, though, in Columbus. So the warmth is winning

00:42out well west of the mountains. And that's going to be the theme of the week here. There are your

00:46winter weather advisories. I want to point out what's going on Baltimore, D.C. and Philadelphia.

00:50South of the bulk of the snow, we're going to see a little bit of freezing rain, light freezing rain

00:56will be leading to some trouble tomorrow morning as our storm brings milder air aloft east. But we

01:02got down to one yesterday or this morning, I should say, in some of the suburbs northwest

01:06of Philadelphia. So there's plenty of cold air in place. The ground has been absolutely frozen

01:11and road surfaces certainly beginning very cold with some low temperatures on the surface,

01:18even if it's 34, 35 degrees with rain falling on top of that. We may have inherited some cold

01:24problems from the past two days or so and therefore freezing rain could glaze some of

01:29these surfaces Baltimore, D.C. and Philadelphia in the morning. Roads may be coated with a very

01:34thin layer of ice. We'll have snow to the north here with snow covering the roads in many other

01:40areas and a little quick shot of snow into New York City. No significant accumulations there

01:44because of the limited nature of this. But farther northwest, you're going to see a little more

01:48precipitation before the atmosphere dries as it descends from the mountains. That's where we're

01:52looking at one to three inches of snow. Three to six inches into places near Utica and Rome,

01:56New York. Six plus into the Adirondacks and the Green Mountains there. So here's Burlington's

02:01AccuWeather Wintercast. Three to six inches of snow beginning around 9 p.m. continuing to around

02:06midday on Christmas Eve. Philadelphia, we have the icy AccuWeather Wintercast. Look for this

02:11product on the AccuWeather app at accuweather.com. Eighty-one percent chance we see at least a trace

02:15of freezing rain, perhaps even a few hundredths of an inch. That spells trouble. It's going to

02:19be a problem. Elsewhere, New York City, 36. A little bit of light snow. Average high 42. So that

02:24is still six below average for Christmas Eve. D.C., average high 47. A little ice in the morning.
