“Pressure Killed Him?” Moradabad BLO Found Hanging — Suicide Note Blames SIR Workload

A BLO teacher in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh, died by suicide on Sunday morning. The body of 46-year-old Sarvesh Singh was found hanging inside his home in Baheri village of Bhojpur. His family discovered him early in the morning and broke down in grief.

Sarvesh, an assistant teacher at Zahidpur Sikandarpur Composite School and appointed BLO on 7 October, left behind a three-page suicide note addressed to the Basic Education Officer. In it, he alleged severe pressure and harassment linked to SIR targets. He wrote about sleepless nights, anxiety, and the burden of caring for his four daughters, two of whom were unwell.

He stated that despite working day and night, he could not meet the SIR target and felt suffocated, restless and mentally exhausted. He clarified that his family was not responsible and requested that officials support his wife and daughters.

Family members said Sarvesh was the school headmaster but was still assigned BLO duties without proper training. They alleged he was under tremendous pressure due to SIR workload.

The Primary Teachers’ Union demanded a government job and compensation for the family.

Police confirmed the recovery of the suicide note and sent the body for postmortem. District Magistrate Anuj Singh, however, said Sarvesh was performing well as a BLO and had completed 67% of his digitisation work—above average. He added that Sarvesh had assistance and was not under official pressure, though the suicide note indicates distress.

Since the introduction of SIR in Uttar Pradesh, seven BLOs have died—three by suicide, three from heart attacks and one from brain haemorrhage.

The case has raised serious questions about workload, deadlines and mounting pressure on BLOs during the ongoing voter list revision.
