Hapur resident Aditya Sagar (21), a third-year B.Tech Civil Engineering student at IIT Ropar, died after collapsing during a workout at the institute’s campus gym in Rupnagar, Punjab.
Aditya, who had recently registered at the gym, was visiting it for the first time on Monday evening. Around 6:30 pm, while exercising, he reportedly began bleeding from his ear, sweated heavily, and collapsed. He was rushed to the IIT Medical Centre and later referred to the Civil Hospital, Rupnagar, where doctors declared him dead.
Police said the post-mortem has been completed. According to fellow students, Aditya had gone to the gym on an empty stomach and had no known medical history.
Aditya returned to campus on January 2 after New Year holidays. His family was informed by the institute administration. His father, Vineet Sagar, a DCP in the Railway Department currently posted in Patna, rushed to Ropar and reportedly fainted on seeing his son’s body. The body was brought to Hapur on Wednesday, where last rites were performed amid grief.
Vineet Sagar had earlier served in the security detail of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. The family resides in Avas Vikas Colony, Hapur. Aditya’s mother, Madhu Sagar, is a homemaker, and his younger brother, Arnav Sagar, is a law student in Raipur.
The IIT Ropar administration termed the incident an accident and expressed condolences. The campus gym is meant for light workouts and does not have professional trainers or physiotherapists.
