MBBS Admission Obsession: Jaunpur Youth Amputates Own Leg to Claim Disabled Quota, Police Expose Shocking Truth

In a shocking incident from Jaunpur district of Uttar Pradesh, a 24-year-old man allegedly amputated his own leg in an attempt to secure admission to an MBBS course under the disabled quota. Police investigations later revealed that the injury was self-inflicted and not the result of any external attack, as initially claimed.

The incident occurred in the Line Bazaar police station area. The youth, identified as Suraj Bhaskar, a resident of Khalilpur, was found injured on the morning of January 19 at his under-construction house. He had severed four fingers of his left foot, leaving only the thumb intact. He was first admitted to the district hospital and later shifted to a private hospital, where he is currently undergoing treatment.

Suraj, who holds a D-Pharma degree and had been preparing for MBBS for the past three years, initially told police that two unidentified men attacked him at night, rendering him unconscious and amputating his foot. Based on his statement, police registered a case of attempted murder and launched an investigation.

However, during the probe, police recovered syringes, anaesthesia vials and a cutting machine from near the spot. Call Detail Records (CDR), diary entries and interrogation of family members revealed that Suraj was under severe mental stress due to repeated failure in securing MBBS admission. A diary recovered from him mentioned his determination to get admission in 2026 “at any cost”. Police also found that he had discussed the plan with his girlfriend.

City Superintendent of Police Goldy Gupta said the investigation confirmed that no outsiders were involved. “Suraj used his medical knowledge to carry out the act himself, hoping to benefit from the disabled quota,” she said, adding that he is now stable and further investigation is underway.

Police officials noted that the case highlights the extreme mental pressure faced by aspirants and the dangerous paths some may take under stress.
