An NRI man died after a loaded pistol holstered at his waist accidentally went off while he was getting up from a sofa in Dhani Sucha Singh village of Punjab’s Firozepur district, police said.

The incident occurred on Monday when Harpinder Singh alias Sonu was sitting on a sofa with a relative. As he stood up, the pistol discharged, and the bullet hit him in the stomach. The entire incident was captured on the house’s CCTV cameras.

Family members rushed to his help after hearing the gunshot and took him to a government hospital. Doctors referred him to another hospital in Bathinda, but he died on the way.

Harpinder’s body was sent for postmortem. Sadar police station SHO Ravinder Sharma recorded the statement of his father, Darshan Singh, and initiated proceedings under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Harpinder had recently returned from abroad, was married, and is survived by his wife and a two-year-old daughter. His funeral was held on Tuesday, with villagers and Aam Aadmi Party leaders attending.
