00:00U.S. President Trump interferes in the Honduran election process by demanding votes for the
00:19opposing National Party and promising to pardon former President Juan Orlando Hernandez.
00:24Peru's interim president Jose Harry confirmed that the state of emergency in the city of Tacna,
00:33on the border with Chile, will come into effect at midnight local time on November 29.
00:38The United Nations Committee Against Torture concluded Israel's prolonged deprivation of
00:48food and humanitarian aid and bombing of Gaza considered mass mistreatment that can be considered
00:53torture.
01:00Hello, welcome to From the South. I'm Sofia Fernanda from the Hotel Azor
01:03Studios in Havana, Cuba. We'll begin with the news. Stay with us.
01:07On November 30, Honduras will go to the polls in a new election to choose the next president,
01:13128 members of the National Congress, 298 mayors and other local authorities in the country.
01:28The scenario for this election was previously shared by the primary and internal elections held on
01:44March 9. The country's main political forces use these internal elections to select their official
01:50candidates as only those candidates elected in this process will be legally eligible to compete.
01:57For this crucial day, the National Electoral Council has registered approximately 6.5 million citizens
02:07eligible to vote this electoral register, includes both voters residing in Honduras and members of the
02:14Honduran Diaspora abroad, who will also be entitled to participate.
02:20Thousands of polling stations will be distributed nationwide and it is essential that each voter knows the
02:27number of their polling station and the center where they are to vote. This information can be found on
02:33the official website for the CNS information platforms.
02:41Voters will receive several ballots to cast their votes simultaneously. As the process is a multiple
02:46election, the first is the ballot to elect the president and vice presidents. The additional ballots are for
02:53members of the National Congress where marked votes or selected votes may be cast and finally for the
03:00election of municipal corporations, that is, majors and councillors. The new government will face urgent
03:07challenges from security to the national economy. Beyond the candidates and parties, the election will
03:14define the nation's cause for the next four years. Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump once again interfered
03:21in the Honduran election process, this time demanding votes for the opposing national party and promising to
03:27pardon former president Juan Orlando Hernández, who was convicted of drug trafficking. In a statement
03:34made via the social network Truth Social, the president also made international aid and cooperation
03:41conditional on the victory of the national party candidate Nazi Afura, which violates the fundamental
03:48principles of international law. Trump also announced that he will grant a full and complete pardon to
03:54former president Juan Orlando Hernández, who is currently facing a 45-year sentence for drug trafficking and
04:01corruption. This episode is the latest in a campaign of interference by the international right wing
04:06to pressure for the victory of the two-party system in the November 3rd elections.
04:24In Honduras, the government carries out a special program of energy subsidies to cover 100% of the
04:40electricity service bill, expenses benefiting a large number of low-resource families. From Tegucigalpa City,
04:48in the last four years, poverty in Honduras reduced by 9%. Thanks to social programs, this country's
05:02government affirms. In a Tegucigalpa neighborhood, we met Gladys Hernández, who earns her living selling
05:08tortillas. She represents one of nearly one million households that don't pay electricity.
05:14At least that money that was paid is no longer paid, because my daughter paid up to $1,500. She paid a lot.
05:25And now we save that? And now we don't pay anymore. Do they use that now for food? Yes, for the food.
05:33Pisailes Izaguiri is from the Third Age and also benefits from the program, and with satisfaction,
05:42shows us the zero bill. Before, when the government was there, I had more than 1,000 lempiras for
05:48electricity, and I didn't have anything, because the most I have is everything I have here. I have the
05:54receipt there. Look, the receipt that is zero. I have it up there. My receipt comes out zero.
06:01The beneficiaries are the most vulnerable households, housewives, farmers and workers,
06:06among others. Their monthly consumption doesn't exceed 150 kilowatts. Josue says these savings have
06:13impacted his family economy. That money now helps us buy other things. It's of great benefit for the
06:23poor families of the Florida Ocampo community. Like me, there are many who don't pay electricity
06:28thanks to that subsidy that President Xiomara Castro is giving. They even feel fear that another
06:36government comes and takes away these help so evidently necessary for them.
06:47This executive from the state national electricity company affirms that the free energy program is
06:52driven with state funds and that it alleviates to some measure the economy of the most needy households
06:58nationwide. This program has been able to benefit more than 900,000 families nationwide who at this
07:04moment don't pay energy, who in the times of the narco dictatorship had to pay for energy. There was a
07:14totally mercantile treatment of the families, cutting off their energy in a gross way. And now with this
07:19program, that money they used to allocate for energy payment, now people can allocate it to the
07:31education of their children, to the food of their children, to medicines or also to recreational activities.
07:42In the last four years, Honduras has increased the budget for energy subsidies, seeking to reach more
07:48low-income households.
07:57There are subsidies allocated to fuels, energy, gas too, that we use for cooking, that here in our country
08:02we call gas chimps. More than 20,000 million lempiras to attend all these subsidy programs and that come
08:09from taxes from the rational use of the tributes that the majority of Hondurans make.
08:22But the energy subsidy program is not the only one benefiting the vulnerable family of this
08:26Central American country. They also tell us there are subsidies for liquefied gas and also for fuels
08:32nationwide. Without doubt, they are programs that benefit Honduras' most vulnerable families.
08:50In other news in the United States, Philadelphia International Airport resumed operations after a
08:55bomb threat alert that was resolved without the incident. According to authorities, the United States
09:01Federal Aviation Administration issued a warning to suspend airport operations on the ground, citing
09:07the existence of a suspected explosive device. As explained by a police spokesperson, the situation
09:14required the assistance of the Philadelphia police on board an aircraft. The agency noted that approximately
09:2030 minutes after the suspension, the security incident was resolved and operations resumed.
