00:50Hello and welcome to From the South, from the headquarters of Telesur English in Havana, Cuba.
00:54My name is Pablo Micheliche. We begin with the news to stay with us.
01:00The National Civil Aviation Institute of Venezuela, INAC, revoked the authorization to operate in the
01:06country for six international airlines for unilaterally concealing flights to Venezuela
01:12following a notice from a foreign authority. The decision published in the official
01:17Gazette of the Bolivarian Nation specifies that the measures have been taken against Iberia,
01:22TAP, Avianca, Latin Airlines, Turkish Airlines and Gold Airlines. The agency also stated that these
01:30companies joined the state terrorism actions promoted by the United States government by unilaterally
01:36suspending their operations to Venezuela based on a notice issued by an aviation authority without
01:43jurisdiction in the country. It is important to note that the Bolivarian government held meetings with
01:49the Airlines representative to discuss the decision and set a deadline for the resumption of operations
01:56which these companies choose to ignore.
01:58The United Socialist Party of Venezuela announced Wednesday the creation of what are known as the
02:08Integra Bolivarian Community Commons as part of the new structure of the party's grassroots organization.
02:14According to the party's secretary general, the initiative aims to enable the defense of the country in
02:22circumstances that warrant it. Cabello emphasized that the formation of the commas will begin this
02:28Thursday in a process similar to the election of the Bolivarian Integral Base Committees with the direct
02:34participation of the heads of the Hugo Chávez Battle Unies or UBCH. Cabello also urged the population to join the
02:42party in the face of the current threats and reminded them that Washington's objective is to take over the
02:50country's natural resources under the excuse of the fight against drug trafficking.
02:59The Venezuelan government is promoting a public works plan as an end of the year objective especially in the health sector and the
03:07restoration of historical sites. President Nicolas Maduro announced the complexion and the handing
03:13over of 98 projects across the country with a priority investment in the public health system.
03:19During his tour of Caracas he inspected the comprehensive rehabilitation of the cardiology ward
03:25at a hospital as part of the completed projects. The president stated that this initiative is part of an
03:31offensive to complete by 2025 and advanced in building a social state of justice. Furthermore, Maduro instructed
03:40his team to locate and transform into a historical landmark the house in Caracas where the father of the
03:46Dominican Republic, Juan Pablo Duarte died.
03:54We go now to Bolivia. Digital violence, an increasingly common form of aggression against children and
04:00adolescents has been classified as a crime punishable by 3 to 15 years in prison. A recent study shows that
04:07nearly one-third of women in the country are affected. Our correspondent, Freddy Morales, gives us the details.
04:16Crimes related to human trafficking and smuggling, especially for the purpose of sexual exploitation,
04:21have increased in the country due to the widespread use of social media.
04:25Recruitment is the easiest thing that can happen, not only as a form of entertainment, when a child or
04:32teenager joins social media to view platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, but especially when these
04:38teenage victims are looking for a job, how to earn money, and social media plays a fundamental role because
04:44behind those WhatsApp numbers, those Facebook posts, there are sexual exploiters, pimps, traffickers.
04:49A recent study involving the United Nations Agency for Combating Sexual Violence verified last year
04:59that the phenomenon is growing and spreading.
05:04We have discovered that 27% of women are victims of digital violence, that 22% of these victims are
05:10victims of recruitment for the trafficking and smuggling of adolescent women, girls, and boys as well.
05:15It has been discovered how violence through social media directly affects the economic
05:23lives of women. For example, posting deepfics or defaming a woman and uploading it to social media
05:29then impacts her chances of getting a job, her chances of accessing scholarships, and of getting promoted.
05:34The prosecutor's office has incorporated digital violence into its investigations and police work
05:46in connection with crimes related to pornography and sexual exploitation.
05:54Now we see someone invisible behind a cell phone, and the parent, even if they set the appropriate
06:00restrictions, these people exclusively disguised their identity to look like a teenager,
06:06a girl or boy, and achieved their goal, obtaining pornographic images, and then extorting these
06:12children and teenagers.
06:14And at the beginning of last September, the outgoing government enacted a law that adds five new
06:24crimes to the penal code related to this social phenomenon.
06:31This law penalizes those who produce, purchase, sell, or distribute. In other words, we are already
06:37providing broad protection in this area so that people are clearly aware that they cannot consume this
06:42type of material when children, teenage girls, and even women who are being extorted by the
06:48production of this type of material.
06:54The new legislation imposes penalties ranging from 3 to 15 years in prison for crimes related
06:59to digital violence, and the police have expanded their investigations into cyber crime to assist
07:05prosecutors in their work. The most common form of recruitment is the offer of work in the country
07:10and abroad, modeling and romance. Freddy Morales, Telesur, Bolivia.
07:19And now we have a short break coming out, but first remember that you can join us on TikTok
07:23at Telesur English, where you will find news in different formats and news updates on Marshman.
07:28We will be right back and stay with us.
07:29Welcome back.
07:39On was the night after the attack of two National Guard men, the US President Donald Trump announced
07:46he will further harden his anti-immigration policies. In a televised address, he labeled the incident
07:53as an act of terror and claimed that so-called lax immigration measures represent the greatest threat
08:02to national security. Critics noted that such rhetoric exploits isolated incidents to justify
08:09sweeping restrictions. Trump went on to declare that all entry applications from Afghanistan would be
08:17frozen. The alleged attacker, Ramullah Lakabal, a 29-year-old Afghan citizen who entered the country in 2021,
08:27was identified by authorities. Human rights advocates warned that the President's response risks
08:33stigmatizing entry communities, entire communities, and undermining the principles of due process and equal
08:40and equal treatment, framing immigration as a threat rather than a contribution to society.
08:59Canadian Prime Minister McCartney announced a support package for the steel and lumber industries
09:06hit by the US tariff increases. Washington raised the tariff to 50% a measure that directly affects sectors
09:12that rely almost entirely on the US market. In this context, the Prime Minister has stated that he will
09:19protect the most ex-spoken workers and companies and announce a reduction of the steel import quota
09:26from 50% to 20% for countries without trade agreements with Canada. And starting in 2026,
09:33it is a subsidy for domestic rate transport to strengthen national production. The head of government
09:39confirmed that trade negotiations with the United States remain suspended, but the willingness for
09:44dialogue remains open.
10:08In Honduras, the international right and the United States government continue interfering in the country's
10:14elections by campaigning in favor of bipartisanship. Recently, US President Donald Trump and El Salvador's
10:21President Nayib Bukele joined the international campaign that has already added voices such as
10:28Venezuelan far-right politician Maria Corina Machado and US Congresswoman Maria Elvira Salazar, who seek to
10:35promote external pressures in complicity with the bipartisan candidates Nasri Asfura and Salvador Nasralla.
10:42This offensive, denounced by the government and the Libre Party for violating electoral sovereignty,
10:48exposes contradictions within the global far-right, which fails to achieve unanimous support for its candidates
10:54and divides opinions within the bipartisan bloc. Sectors have denounced that this international plan aims to
11:01install a government aligned with US interests and the local oligarchy.
11:12Several delegations of international observers are arriving in Honduras, who will keep their eyes
11:17on the elections next Sunday. Many of them are questioning the attempts at interventions by
11:22movements, countries and figures of the global far-right, who seek to disrupt the democratic process of a
11:28sovereign nation. From Tegucigapa correspondent Robert Hugo Preza gives us more details.
11:37More than six and a half million Hondurans have been called to participate in Sunday's journal elections.
11:42Ahead of the vote, official sectors have denounced plans of fraud and international interference
11:46promoted by the right-wing bipartisan bloc. The director of the Center for Cooperation and International
11:52Exchange find it strange that abroad there is a talk of possible unrest, when the reality here is different.
11:57I've been here for four days, and this country is absolutely calm, it must be said. People are
12:09safeguarding their vote, defending their vote, and that seems to me to be exactly what every people does,
12:15right?
12:16The only aggressiveness I see is from a very hard, very strong right-wing, which does not acknowledge
12:27any of the achievements that have been made.
12:29Philip Ristick is a French political scientist, author of the book Venezuela, The Democracy That Is,
12:41a critique of the spread of false information in media and social networks about Venezuela's 2024
12:46electoral process. He notes with concern that the same script is now being applied in Honduras.
12:51Because the narrative is the same, there is a government, a power located on the radical left,
12:58that seeks a better distribution of wealth, more social justice, more economic justice,
13:04and environmental justice, as well. And that troubles a part of the political spectrum in Venezuela,
13:10as in Honduras, which is commonly called the oligarchy.
13:19Other international observers reacted with indignation to the intervention of far-right figures,
13:24such as U.S. Congresswoman Maria Elvira Salazar, and Venezuelan politician Maria Guadrino Machado.
13:29I see this as a very serious attempt at intervention in matters that belong solely to the sovereignty
13:38of the Honduran people. I believe the most recent example we can see of this strategy was in Venezuela.
13:44In Venezuela, precisely to create an atmosphere that would allow sectors dissatisfied with the
13:55results to reject the people's verdict, proclaim themselves winners, and thereby drag the country
14:01into a spiral of political instability.
14:10The National Electoral Council has planned for more than 6,000 observers, both national and
14:15international, to be deployed throughout the country to verify the conduct of the process.
14:19Hondurans will go to the polls next Sunday to elect their new president, members of the National
14:27Congress, mayors, and deputies to the Central American Parliament.
14:31Roberto Hugo Presa, Telesur, Tegucigalpa, Honduras.
14:45We continue in Honduras, traveling through different areas of this Central American country,
14:57where we find interesting stories and projects that are changing the lives of the population.
15:02We are heading to Tegucigalpa to find out what history our special correspondent, Roberto
15:07Hugo Presa has in store for us.
15:13At first glance, no one would notice that this man has lost both his legs and one arm.
15:17A train mutilated his limbs, but thanks to a government donation, he now walks and uses his two hands.
15:27I was in a wheelchair, and these prosthesis definitely changed my life, as I say, especially now that I
15:34have the support of a synthetic arm. It is very useful to have a secretariat that cares about
15:40people with disabilities, and that is very important because I am a beneficiary, and I thank the government.
15:53Victor talks about the Secretariat of Science and Technology, which is currently developing a program
15:58to manufacture prosthesis using 3D technology that are provided free of charge to those who have lost limbs.
16:05Each prosthesis has a market value of $9,000.
16:09This year, so far, 39 upper limb prosthesis have been delivered, changing the life of many families.
16:16Now they can return to work, drive again, and carry out everyday activities.
16:21This project arises from the need that exists in the Honduran people to be able to provide an
16:29accessible space to obtain a prosthesis for a lost limb, or to correct a limb that has had some
16:35difficulty in its formation process.
16:41One of them is Melkin, whose arm was cut off by a drunk person.
16:44The Secretariat donated him a prosthetic arm, but it deteriorated over time,
16:48so they are now making him a new one.
16:55It is a task that I have no words to describe the value of what they do.
17:00Honestly, it is a great help for people who, by accident or by birth, have a situation like mine.
17:07Every day, students from all over the country visit the technology center to witness and collaborate
17:19on new projects.
17:20Joan, for example, was impressed and asked to do his internship here.
17:25Surprisingly, his creativity led him to make this prosthesis inspired by the pain of his mother,
17:30a victim of breast cancer.
17:31I made it yesterday afternoon, and I want to show it to the minister so that breast
17:39processes can be made.
17:40Who is the first one for?
17:42For my mother.
17:43Why?
17:43Because she is a fighter, and she is very great to me.
17:47Creativity and necessity came together, and the breast
17:52prosthetist prototype emerged from his own initiative. It is still in its initial and trial version,
17:58but it already gives us hope and expectation because we also know of the great need that
18:04exists in this field. This is how we already have on behalf of and within the secretariat,
18:10the first breast prosthetist produced by a young Honduran man.
18:18But prosthetics are not the only project underway. This technology center has also developed drones
18:23for planting basic grains. In addition to facilitating the work of small farmers,
18:27this technology will improve production and guarantee food sovereignty for thousands of rural families.
18:33And we have a second short break coming up, but before we invite you to visit our Facebook page
18:37at Telesur English, where you will be able to watch our top stories, special live coverage,
18:42and much more. Follow our page and activate the notification button to stay up to date on the
18:46world's most recent events. Fashion break, don't go away.
18:57Welcome back. The Palestinian resistance once again denounced that the Zionist occupiers insist on
19:13undermining the ceasefire, accusing them of summarily executing fighters who remain besieged in the Rafa
19:20tunnels. Although the agreement guarantees the lives of the fighters and Zionism had committed to the
19:27United States to resolve the situation of those who remain trapped, they continue executing them.
19:33Hamas asserts that the Israeli occupier is fully responsible for the fate of those on the ground
19:40and calls on the mediators of the agreement to take urgent measures. The Palestinian resistance
19:45reiterates that the war machinery of the genocidal regime continues to violate the agreements
19:52daily despite the negotiated alternatives that have been presented to them.
20:02On to other topics, China criticized Taiwan's leader Lai Shinte on Wednesday for publicly siding
20:08with Japan regarding its recent statements. The spokesman fought Taiwan's Office of Affairs
20:14from the State Council from the State Council, Peng Kian, who accused Lai Shinte of feeding
20:20of fluttery towards Japan and engaging in acts of treason against Taiwan. He also warned Democratic
20:27Progressive Party authorities that any actions reliant on external forces will only lead to disgrace,
20:34and anyone who betrays the nation will inevitably face justice. Statements followed, recent Japanese
20:41remarks about Taiwan that have sparked sustained protests across the island.
20:52Japan's plan to deploy offensive weapons near China-Taiwan region deliberately escalates regional
20:58tensions and provokes military confrontation, which is an extremely dangerous move.
21:04The post-dam proclamation explicitly stipulates that Japan shall not be permitted to rearm for war, and the Japanese constitution, which enshrines pacifists, has also established Japan's exclusively defense-oriented policy.
21:21It is alarming that Japan's right-wing provocateurs are trying every means to break free from the pacifist constitution, going further down the path of military
21:35with love, and leading Japan and the region towards disaster. Taiwan is China's Taiwan.
21:47We will never permit any external interference in the Taiwan region, nor allow Japanese militaries to resurface.
21:53We have the strong will, determination and ability to safeguard our national sovereignty and territorial integrity, and to crush any attempts of external interference.
22:11Also in China, a huge fire in Hong Kong apartment complex has killed at least 55 people and left nearly 300 missing.
22:18According to the police, the fire may have spread due to unsafe scaffolding and the foam materials used during maintenance work.
22:27The blaze, which erupted on Wednesday afternoon, kept firefighters working through the night as they struggled to reach residents who may have been trapped on the upper floors of the housing complex because of intense heat and thick smoke.
22:42The tightly packed complex in the northern Thai port district contains 2,000 apartments across 8 blocks, home to more than 4,600 people.
22:53By Thursday morning, authorities say they had brought fire in 4 blocks under control, with operations continuing in 3 others.
23:00In this context, the Hong Kong police have arrested three men on suspicion of involuntarily manslaughtered for their alleged responsibility in the fire in the Tai Po district.
23:20The arrestees, at ages between 52 and 68, are linked to the construction company responsible for the renovation work at the Wang Fuk court apartment complex.
23:32This fire, considered the most severe in three decades, affected several high-rise buildings and complicated rescue efforts for more than 10 hours.
23:41Chinese President Xi Jinping expressed his condolences and emphasized the need to implement measures to mitigate the impact of the disaster,
23:49while authorities are still investigating the cause of the fire.
23:59Unlike this, we have come to the end of this news.
