00:43widespread proliferation of fleas in tents in the south of the gas strip.
00:51Hello, welcome to From the South.
00:52I'm Sophie Fernandes from the Telesur Studios in Havana, Cuba.
00:56We begin with the news, stay with us.
01:10Following the recent approval of the Amnesty Law, the Venezuelan government is processing
01:15more than 1,500 requests for the release of prisoners, which are being handled immediately
01:20and continuously.
01:21The President of the National Assembly, Jorge Rodriguez, reported that 1,557 requests have
01:27been received from prisoners and are being processed immediately for the prompt release.
01:32Also, the lifting of the alternative measures to imprisonment, which were applied to 10,000
01:37people, is being evaluated.
01:39These measures include court appearances and house arrest.
01:42In addition, Jorarias recall that the regulations also provide further recognition and care of
01:48victims of political violence, so that the mistakes of the past are not repeated.
02:01And Venezuelan acting President Alcir Rodriguez toured the Sovereign Field Fair, held in the
02:06North Zone Socialist Commune in El Retiro, Altagracia Parish, Caracas, along with other authorities.
02:12The event is part of the National Deployment for Peace and Food Prosperity, guaranteeing
02:17food at fair and affordable prices for the Venezuelan people.
02:21The fair is expected to benefit 17,624 residents distributed across eight communities.
02:27Additionally, 80.4 tons of food are being distributed, of which 44 tons are animal protein, and the
02:35remainder consists of groceries, vegetables and fruits.
02:38The sovereign field fairs are a social program promoted by the national government, and the
02:43Ministry of Popular Power for Food to provide assistance to vulnerable communities throughout
02:49open-air markets.
02:57Also in Venezuela, Acting President Alcir Rodriguez conducted a throughout review of the process
03:03made by the Labor Constituent Assembly, with the aim of protecting the benefits of the
03:07Venezuelan workforce.
03:09The official in charge indicated that these meetings allow for the adjustment of proposals
03:13for technological and organizational innovation in public and private companies.
03:19She also emphasized that wage protection and social security are a priority for the state,
03:24and that the new regulatory frameworks will strengthen the active participation of employees
03:29in the management of industrial and administrative processes.
03:33The national government assured that each advance will translate into tangible improvements
03:37for working families.
03:45And we are at the headquarters of one of the country's most important private producers,
03:50and what we are seeing is the same reaction.
03:52It is the new economy for Venezuela, the model we have called for.
03:56An economy that does not depend on oil, that does not depend on all revenues.
04:01A diversified economy with all 14 powers of the Bolivarian economic agenda, and the great
04:07potential that Venezuela has.
04:09We have also seen how important inversors from all around the world are coming to Venezuela
04:14to boost the country's productive engines.
04:19And now we have a short break coming up, but first remember you can join us on TikTok at

04:28Stay with us.
04:41Welcome back to From the South.
04:42We continue with more information from the United States, where the Supreme Court has
04:46deprived the Trump administration of its most used weapon of blackmail against the world,
04:51the indiscriminate imposition of tariffs throughout the International Emergency Powers Act.
04:56Our correspondent in the US, Henry Camelo, has all the details.
05:02While the United States Supreme Court struck down the Trump administration by declaring illegal
05:08the imposition of tariffs through the use of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act.
05:15Chief Justice Roberts wrote the decision that basically stated that Trump was exceeding his
05:24authority.
05:25The decision does not affect all tariffs imposed by Trump administration, as it maintains those
05:31imposed on steel and aluminum through separate laws.
05:35However, the court ruling voids tariffs in two categories.
05:40One, reciprocal tariffs range from 34% for China to a base limit of up to 10% for the
05:49rest of the world.
05:50The other, the 25% tariffs that Trump imposed on some products from Canada, China and Mexico due to their
05:59alleged inability to stop the flow of fentanyl.
06:03According to the Treasury Department data, by December, $133 billion have been collected in tariffs under the International Emergency Economic
06:14Powers Act.
06:15The court ruling enraged President Trump, who launched harsh criticism against the Supreme Court.
06:22What a shame, having to do with voting in particular, when in fact they're just being fools and lapdogs for
06:30the Rhinos and the radical left Democrats, and not that this should have anything at all to do with it.
06:36They're very unpatriotic and disloyal to our Constitution.
06:39And he promised to look for other ways to implement the collection of tariffs.
06:45We have alternatives, great alternatives. Could be more money. We'll take in more money and we'll be a lot stronger
06:53for it.
06:53We're taking in hundreds of billions of dollars. We'll continue to do so.
06:57Trump reacted immediately to that by stating that he would use other means in order to impose these tariffs and
07:08immediately stating that he now is imposing 10% tariffs across the board.
07:14For analyst Steve Elner, the Supreme Court's decision sets a solid precedent for the balance of power in the United
07:23States.
07:24Regardless of whether he continues to attempt to use the threat of tariffs for political purposes, the mere fact that
07:34the Supreme Court, that's the Supreme Court, the mere fact that they annulled a decision of the Trump administration in
07:43the area of tariffs,
07:44I think will encourage countries to attempt to defend their national sovereignty.
07:56In other words, Trump has really violated the national sovereignty of other countries using the threat of tariffs.
08:02Now the governors of Illinois and California are demanding checks from the Trump administration for over $1,000 for families
08:11in those states to cover the cost they incur in their homes due to the tariffs.
08:18Pablo Daniel Joe and Henry Camelo, Telesur, New York.
08:27In this context, on Saturday, US President Donald Trump announced that he will impose a 15% global tariff in
08:33an attempt to confront the Supreme Court ruling that struck down his previous import taxes.
08:38According to a post on his social media platform, True Social, Trump announced the increase from 10% to 15%.
08:45The move was based on a review of the decision issued by the Supreme Court on Friday.
08:49Previously, the President had announced a 10% global tariff.
08:53The 10% tariffs were set to take effect on Tuesday, February 24th.
08:58It's unclear whether the increased 15% tariffs will also be imposed starting then.
09:20Around 56 million people in the Northeastern United States are under winter weather alerts, including 40 million in New York.
09:27This is the first time in nine years that a blizzard warning has been issued for the Big Apple.
09:32The National Water Service increases forecasts for the severity of the storm affecting the Mid-Atlantic and Appalachian regions,
09:40including cities such as Philadelphia, Delaware, Boston and New York, where 9 to 18 inches of snow are expected.
09:46The storm will be fully formed by Sunday, bringing heavy snowfall and wind gusts to most of the northwestern part
09:54of the country.
09:55The alert will remain in effect until Monday.
10:03Moving to Ecuador, the country updates alert levels due to heavy rains that have left at least 3 dead, 12
10:10injured and more than 5,000 people affected in the country.
10:12The National Risk Management Secretariat confirmed red, orange and yellow alert levels in different provinces of the country in response
10:20to the impact of winter rains.
10:22Likewise, the National Institute of Meteorological and Hydrology warned that intense rains will continue in different areas of Ecuador until
10:29February 22,
10:30accompanied by storms, water accumulation with risk of flooding, river overflow and landslides.
10:36In addition, the Institute stated that it will strengthen its warning dissemination and preemptive coordination services for the future.
10:53Moving on to other information, on Saturday, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez expressed his commitment to achieving real equality for
11:00the Roma people in Spain and fighting the discrimination they face.
11:03He also awarded two of the country's highest honors, one of singer Lolita Flores and the other to guitarist Jose
11:10Antonio Garmona, known as Pepe Avicuela.
11:13At the event commemorating the 600th anniversary of the arrival of the Romani people in Spain, held at the Palacio
11:19de la Moncloa, the official residence, Sanchez highlighted their contributions to the country's culture and history.
11:26The Roma arrived in the Iberian Peninsula in 1425, where Alfonso V of Aragon mentioned them in a safe conduct
11:34as people from lesser Egypt.
11:43Also in Spain, as part of its foreign policy strategy, the country plans to strengthen its ties with China, India
11:49and Vietnam, specifically with the Asia-Pacific region.
11:51Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Álvarez presented the new strategy for Asia and the Pacific for 2026-2029, with the
12:00aim of diversifying foreign policy.
12:02During a meeting at the House of Asia, the Head of Diplomacy emphasized that Spain seeks to consolidate a European
12:08strategy projection in the region through mechanisms of bilateral dialogue and the opening of new diplomatic missions.
12:14With this initiative, Madrid seeks to position itself as a fundamental bridge between the European Union and the emerging powers
12:22of Asia and the Pacific.
12:31Moving now to Greece, at least five migrants died and 25 are missing after a boat sank off the island
12:37of Crete in the country on Saturday.
12:40At the time of the incident, strong winds were blowing in the area and the waves were reaching 2.5
12:45metres in height.
12:46The occupants of the boat on the high seas called the emergency number.
12:50There were about 50 people on board, 20 of whom were rescued alive by a mission ship that responded to
12:56the call for help.
12:57The Crete Coast Guard and the Frontex Agency continued search and rescue operations in the area.
13:03During the operation, the authorities detected another boat with about 40 migrants on board, initiating a second rescue operation.
13:20In other news, Guinea-Bissau has cancelled a US-funded study that sought to evaluate potential side effects of the
13:27hepatitis B vaccine.
13:28The clinical trial aimed to administer the vaccine to 14,000 newborns.
13:33The research, which sought to evaluate the side effects of the vaccine, including a possible link to autism, was suspended
13:39due to ethical concerns.
13:41Researchers urged the World Health Organization to promote only approved treatments,
13:46and not only approved treatments in large multinational corporations.

14:49Welcome back to Frontier.
14:50From the South.
14:51And we go to Palestine, where thousands of displaced people are facing new health crises,
14:56following the widespread proliferation of fleas in tents in the south of the Gaza Strip.
15:00The lack of personnel from insect control and the deterioration of living conditions in the coastal enclave
15:05doubled the suffering of the people and increased the health risks, especially for children and elderly people.
15:12Health care workers warn that they are experiencing a deadly stalemate as a result of the continued siege and lack
15:19of medical supplies.
15:20The humanitarian crisis in Gaza is escalating as a result of the Zionist army's destruction and blockade of essential supplies.
15:34In this context, more than 40,000 Palestinian children lost at least one parent during the Israeli siege, facing the
15:41worst orphan crisis in history.
15:42The United Nations Children's Fund, UNICEF, warned that the figure does not reflect the true crisis facing Palestinian children
15:49and is working on family reunification programs to provide psychological support.
15:53In this scenario, family members care for the children, although many are forced to take on adult responsibilities to survive
16:01in displaced people camps.
16:03International organizations describe the psychological artifacts as a stolen childhood and call for an urgent action.
16:19And at least two Palestinians were killed in Israeli airstrikes in Gaza on the third day of Ramadan, marking the
16:25latest breach of the truce deal signed with Hamas more than four months ago.
16:29On Saturday, attacks occurred in the Havalya camp in northern Gaza and the Kisan al-Niyar area in southern Gaza.
16:37The total death toll from Israel's attacks since the ceasefire came into effect has risen to 614, with 1,640
16:46more Palestinians wounded.
16:48Israeli military acknowledged one of the attacks, claiming this force killed a fighter who crossed onto the side of the
16:54Gaza border.
16:55The army said it would continue to act to remove any supposed immediate threat.
17:09And the Saudi Arabia Ministry of Foreign Affairs strongly condemned and denounced the United States for proposing total Israeli control.
17:16The statement said,
17:18The Kingdom affirms its catechotical rejection of these irresponsible statements, which constitute a violation of international law, discharge of the
17:26United Nations and diplomatic norms,
17:28and represent a dangerous precedent as they were made by a newest official, and constitute a disregard for the distinguished
17:35relations of the countries in the region with the United States of America.
17:40Finally, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that the only way to achieve a just and comprehensive peace is true
17:45in the occupation on the basis of a two-state solution,
17:48establishing an independent Palestinian state within the 1967 borders, with this Jerusalem as the capital.
18:02These statements by the U.S. Ambassador to Israel generate a strong response from the Arab and Islamic world, which
18:10warns of the risk of peace in the region.
18:12Fourteen countries and three Islamic multilateral organizations express their strong condemnation and deep concern over the statements made by the
18:21United States Ambassador to Israel,
18:23in which he indicated that it would be acceptable for Israel to exercise control over the territories belonging to Arab
18:29states, including the occupied West Bank.
18:31They also reaffirmed that Israel has no sovereignty over the occupied Palestinian territory or any other occupied Arab territory.
18:38They reiterated their firm rejection of any attempt to annex the West Bank, or separated from the Gaza Strip,
18:45their firm opposition to the expansion of settlements in the occupied Palestinian territory,
18:50under categorical rejection of any threat to the sovereignty of Arab states.
19:02We move now to Morocco, where at least four police officers died and another 26 were injured,
19:07after a serious accident involving the bus that was transporting them from the city of Sifi Ifni to Agadir.
19:14The incident occurred 20 kilometers north of CSD Ifni.
19:18A total of 44 security forces members were traveling in the vehicle.
19:22The agents belonged to a special unit responsible for maintaining order during public events.
19:27Two of the injured agents are still in critical condition, and the remaining injured people have injuries of various severities.
19:34In turn, the General Dictatorate of National Security created a commission to determine the exact causes of the incident,
19:42where the factors that led to the tragedy that has plunged the Moroccan forces into mourning are still being investigated.
19:58And at least 15 dead and more than 1,000 injured in an explosion in the city of Karachi, Pakistan.
20:04The incident occurred at about 4 a.m. in a three-story building located in a densely populated neighborhood.
20:11Investigations point to a gas leak at the cause of the explosion.
20:14A local media reported that the residential building where the incident occurred had been billed illegally,
20:20without complying with the regulations.
20:23Among the victims were women and children.
20:25Rescue teams continued their search efforts.
20:28In this regard, authorities do not rule out the possibility that the number of victims will increase as the rubble
20:33is removed.
20:52In other news on Saturday, the Director General of the World Health Organization, WHO, Tedros Alamón, demanded an immediate end
21:01to attacks on health facilities in Sudan.
21:03During the first 50 days of the year, five attacks were recorded against medical centers in the country, resulting in
21:1069 deaths and 49 injuries, as confirmed by the highest representative in a message on X.
21:15The most recent attacks occurred on February 15, when Almas Moon Hospital in Senar State was bombed, killing three patients
21:24and wounded seven people, including a staff member.
21:27The Director General of the World Health Organization urged that medical facilities, equipment, health workers and patients be protected.
