00:00Talk about blue collar, you think of Brett Venables, you think about that Oklahoma defense, you know, they entered this matchup as it opened on Sunday night as a six and a half point road dog to Alabama. This was a team that they had dominated last year in Norman 24 to three.
00:17John Mateer stepped up their defense, forced Ty Simpson into mistakes and coach. They steal a victory. Their backs were against the wall yet again on the road. And they now have two quality wins against Tennessee and now top ranked Alabama. That was a dominant defensive effort out of Brett Venables in the Sooners.
00:38Yeah, I'm starting to call it Vinny ball now. It's Venables ball right now in the last two games that they've won against Tennessee now. And again, against Alabama, they've created six turnovers. They've caused six turnovers in those two games and they've won those games. And those turnovers led to 17 points. That's how you win football games. Your defense holds them out. But your but your turnovers is what you cause with the defense. And that's part of that overall package.
01:05And so I'm very, very impressed with Oklahoma, the defense and the way they go out there and take games away from the other team. They're doing that now at the perfect time of the season. That's why I didn't give them a lot of chance to make it to any postseason earlier on.
01:22But right now, they've at least got themselves in a position, the way they're playing now, and with a couple of games they can win at the end of their season, that I think they attract voters. I think that kind of thing attract voters when you talk about the college football playoffs.
01:37And when you think about the perception of Brett Venables, coach, he hasn't given enough credit. You know, I think if you asked the fan base of Oklahoma about a year ago, they would have run him out of town saying that he wasn't the head coach and couldn't continue the legacy that Bob Stoops built there over the last 25 years.
01:59But now in back-to-back games, he has really proved that from a defensive perspective, that team is focused. And as long as John Matthias is healthy, this is a team that maybe they're not going to win the SEC because they have two losses.
02:12But they get into the college football playoff, they could be a long shot to make some noise.
02:18You know, it's interesting that you compare him to Bob Stoops because I think they both, again, Venables was at Oklahoma during the Bob Stoops championship year.
02:26But the one thing Bob Stoops did that I'm hoping that Venables can understand, he hired Mike Leach as his offensive coordinator.
02:32He knew he was going to, he was with Steve Spurrier at Florida when they won a championship, and he was the defensive coordinator.
02:37When you're a defensive head coach, make sure you turn the other side of that ball over somebody special.
02:43John Mateer may be that guy, the coordinator that came with him may be that guy, but if you understand that, then you can go out there and play Vinny Ball.
02:52Get turnovers, play good defense, and get yourself to a championship.
