00:00The upset in the conference happened last Saturday night.
00:03Louisville was at home.
00:05They were in striking distance to potentially make an ACC title game.
00:09All they had to do was take care of business against Cal and Justin Wilcox.
00:13They were laying basically 20 points in that matchup.
00:17Coach, they didn't just cover, not cover.
00:20They lost the game outright.
00:21Cal strikes the upset 29-26.
00:25They become bowl eligible, picking up their sixth victory on the season.
00:29They just outplayed Louisville on both sides of the football last Saturday night.
00:34They really did outgain them, 427-351 for Louisville.
00:40Cal came to play, and when it got down to the overtime,
00:44instead of kicking a field goal just to tie it up,
00:46on fourth and one, they said, no, let's put all the marbles in a fourth and one.
00:50And that young quarterback that I can't pronounce his name perfectly,
00:54he goes out there and throws a touchdown pass,
00:56and they win it without having to go for a field goal and a second overtime.
01:00Cal just outplayed them.
01:02And that's what's disappointing, because Louisville really has the makings of a really good football team.
01:08But they've got some ugly losses.
01:10Now they've got to come back and get themselves.
01:13You know, they've lost two games in overtime.
01:15And so, you know, imagine when you start losing games in overtime,
01:18you're pretty dang close to having a pretty dang good record.
01:22But those are games they should have won, and now all they can do is focus on the next one,
01:28because they have stretched themselves where there's really not a chance for the conference championship game
01:33or the playoffs for this team.
01:35Yeah, I think that the biggest thing for me is that entering this year over the past three seasons with Justin Wilcox,
01:43this team was not a very good road team.
01:45They entered this year like 6-13 on the road or on a neutral field.
01:50They got some quality wins.
01:51They got the win against Boston College earlier in the year,
01:54took Virginia Tech to overtime on the road,
01:56and then knock off one of the better teams in the conference in Louisville.
02:00Now the stage is set potentially for next season with a sophomore quarterback
02:05and some of the young depth that they have at the skilled players.
02:08They're potentially maybe a team that could be a dark horse to win the title next season.
02:14So we'll see how it plays out.
02:15A team that nobody saw coming was Tony Elliott and Virginia Cavaliers.
02:21They were undefeated in the conference last week.
02:23They laid six and a half points to a very blue-collar team in Wake Forest.
02:27That was an ugly game, coach.
02:29There were some injuries for Virginia offensively.
02:32They couldn't put it together in the second half.
02:34They lose the game outright to Dickert and Wake Forest.
02:38This Wake Forest team is battle-tested.
02:41They knocked off SMU.
02:42They now knock off Virginia.
02:44They win it 16-9.
02:47Yeah, Wake Forest is sneaky good.
02:49They are a lot better than people on the outside understand.
02:52But I'm going to say this.
02:53When UVA lost Chandler Morris, he has been the body and soul of that offense.
02:58They lost him in the second quarter.
03:00They had no chance.
03:02They scored no touchdowns.
03:03They kicked field goals.
03:04It was a team that, you know, they've made their mark by winning close ballgames.
03:08They couldn't do it.
03:09With a backup quarterback, and that happens at so many places.
03:12It happened in Missouri.
03:13It happens here.
03:14That quarterback, as good as he's going to be maybe one day, not good enough to win that football game.
03:20And they have to suffer loss.
03:21But when you're winning games on the last seconds of a game, that's what happens when you're not ready to go with a backup quarterback.
03:28And Jake Dickert has done a fantastic job taking over for Dave Klaus in 6-3 now.
03:34They are bowl-eligible.
03:35Coach, they had a win total at the start of the year right in the area of about 3-1⁄2, 4-1⁄2 wins to start the year.
03:42They have definitely over-exceeded expectations.
03:45They pick up this victory against North Carolina.
03:48It would be seven wins this year.
03:49Yeah, Dickert needs to get a raise.
03:51Now, they need to keep him located right where he is.
03:53His name is going to start getting thrown around in that care cell because Wake Forest is one of those programs.
04:00As a head coach, you've got to be careful because you fall in love with that place.
04:03You might miss a job that is a little bit easier to win year in and year out.
