00:00We saw a matchup take place in Hawaii.
00:03Stanford pushed Hawaii to the limit, but in the end, Hawaii prevails 23-20.
00:09Give me your thoughts about what transpired last Saturday night.
00:13You know, it kind of went how I thought it would,
00:15because Stanford stayed in that ballgame.
00:17They, I mean, they're up by three points with two minutes and 31 seconds left
00:22before Hawaii kicked the first of two field goals.
00:25Of course, the last one, a walk-off.
00:27But I didn't think Stanford would be great,
00:29but I figured, you know, they'll play good, solid football, and they did.
00:32They just couldn't score.
00:34They had better statistics.
00:35They had a lot of yards, but they couldn't score.
00:37They had to kick field goals.
00:38They didn't get it.
00:39They did not stop Hawaii at the end,
00:42and then Hawaii came through and kicked two field goals in the last two minutes
00:47and 31 seconds to win the game by three.
00:50But, you know, Stanford to me is not going to have a great year.
00:53I'm not sure Hawaii is going to have a great year,
00:55but Hawaii is about three points better than Stanford.
00:59Yeah, they were two-and-a-half-point favorites in that matchup.
01:02Their redshirt freshman, Micah Alejandro,
01:04stepped up with a dominating second-half performance
01:07through well over 60% completion percentage,
01:11210 yards, two touchdowns, no interceptions.
01:14The biggest thing that stood out for me
01:16is that Stanford was able to run the football in that matchup.
01:19They averaged 4.1 yards per carry,
01:22177 yards on the ground against that front seven.
01:26Last year, that was a weak spot for the offense,
01:29only averaging 132 rushing yards per game.
01:33But the passing attack with the junior transfer,
01:36Ben Goldbranson from Oregon Straight, struggled a little bit.
01:40He only had 109 passing yards.
01:42Are you shocked?
01:43Because Frank Reich was the head coach,
01:45you thought the ingenuity and just the NFL coaching experience
01:49would help out the passing attack?
01:50They're not talented enough.
01:53They're not talented enough to go out there and just say,
01:56okay, I've got a head coach.
01:57He understands football.
01:59We're going to go throw the ball around.
02:00I just don't think right now Stanford now,
02:02they have been down.
02:03They've had four, three, and nine seasons.
02:06Recruiting's been tough, and they're in a down year,
02:09and I think you can stabilize the program.
02:11You can put kids in the right position,
02:13but you can't take an average athlete
02:15and have them outblock somebody that's a better football team.
02:18And there are going to be a lot of teams in the ACC
02:21that are better than Hawaii.
02:22I just think what we saw were two teams that it's going to be hard
02:25for either team to have a winning season, maybe Hawaii.
02:29And they played, you know, Stanford played about as good as they could,
02:33and I don't know where that's going to take them
02:34because they're, I mean, projected to win three and a half games this year.
02:38I mean, that's the over-under, maybe one game in the conference.
02:42But I think they're on hold at Stanford.
02:45I think the program's on hold.
02:47They've got to try to grab some wins when they can.
02:51Maybe they can get some momentum, but I don't think the talent's there,
02:54and I think the school has made a statement to the staff
02:57and to the team that we're going to be temporary,
02:59we're not going to be permanent,
03:01and we're going to get ready to get a coach next year and go forward.
03:04So, you know, we'll see how it goes.
03:06But I watched that game, and I think, you know,
03:09two teams that aren't great football teams,
03:11but they had a pretty good game.
03:12We'll be right back to the field and we'll be right back.
