00:00What I love most about being a designer is feeling like I can do anything.
00:13Sewing is my life. I can't imagine not doing this.
00:18I have talent. I am a force to be reckoned with.
00:22I know who I am and I know what I want to make.
00:29I'm ready for this. I'm a designer that is different.
00:32That's something that the fashion world needs to see.
00:35I have to win. It would change so much for me.
00:40In this competition, sometimes you're in and sometimes you're out.
00:45Let's go. I'm ready.
00:49I'm so excited. Ever since I was a kid, I wanted to do Project Runway and now I'm here.
01:03Oh my gosh. Wow.
01:07I am lost for words right now. I am here for a reason. I have it in me. I feel like I could win this.
01:15This is crazy.
01:18Oh my God, like this is real.
01:21I made it to Project Runway Canada. I'm doing this for my people.
01:26Little Feather.
01:28Little Feather, that's so beautiful. I'm Chad.
01:31I'm the only Quebecois here and I feel kind of great. I love to present the Quebec people.
01:38They will miss me. I love it. I love it.
01:41This is surreal. It just feels like I'm waiting for somebody to be like, psych, you know, something.
01:46Wait, you're Charles, right? Charles is a desire that is pretty much known here in Toronto.
01:52So to see him, I'm a bit worried for myself.
01:55You're a huge competition.
01:59What's happening?
02:01Oh my God.
02:03Someone important is coming out of that plane.
02:06Oh my God.
02:11Oh my God.
02:13Coco looks so fabulous. She just exudes a confident energy. I just hope I can dress her one day.
02:24Oh my goodness.
02:26Welcome to Project Runway Canada, designers.
02:29This is such a big moment for all of you.
02:34But don't forget, only one of you will be named Canada's next great fashion designer.
02:39Want to know what you're competing for?
02:42Yes!
02:43A feature spread in Elle Canada magazine.
02:47Woo!
02:48And from TD, a career launching investment of $100,000.
02:54Oh!
02:56Crazy!
02:57That's insane.
02:59But I'm not the only one joining you on this ride.
03:02Okay.
03:03She's a celebrated designer, author, activist, and industry visionary.
03:09Your mentor, Aurora James.
03:13Aurora is incredible.
03:15She's had a huge impact on the fashion world. It's so inspiring.
03:18We love you!
03:21I am so honored to be your mentor.
03:24Are you ready to hear about your first challenge?
03:27Yes!
03:28Yes!
03:29Well, designers, I've come with some baggage.
03:32Oh!
03:33What's happening?
03:34I am nervous.
03:35Are we using other people's clothes?
03:38Please step up and claim one.
03:42Open them up and take a look!
03:44I'm nervous for them.
03:45Oh, my God!
03:46Denim!
03:47Yes!
03:48I'm very excited.
03:50I like working with denim because I'm the master of upcycling.
03:55I have my own design brand. It is called Obnoxious.
03:58Everything I do is denim. Everything.
04:00Denim is not the easiest material to work with.
04:04It's thick, it's bulky, so this is a challenge.
04:08Den-um?
04:10The Canadian tuxedo used to be a punchline, but now it's no joke.
04:15Fashion houses like Louis Vuitton and Chanel have elevated this iconic look,
04:20giving denim on denim its moment on the runway time and time again.
04:25For your first challenge, we want you to create a high-fashion,
04:29runway-ready, all-denim look from her.
04:32And you'll find everything else you need in the workroom.
04:35Your model cards can be found inside your suitcases.
04:38This is a two-day challenge.
04:40And your one-shot to make a killer first impression.
04:44It's your chance to show me and the judges exactly who you are as a designer,
04:49with a look that is authentically you.
04:51There's a lot of pressure to reflect my aesthetic out of denim.
04:55It's gonna be really, really tough.
04:57All right, you have 30 minutes to sketch your ideas,
04:59and I'll meet you in the workroom later.
05:01And the next time I see you, it will be on the other runway.
05:05Woo!
05:06Woo!
05:07Designers, your 30 minutes starts now.
05:09Woo!
05:10Okay.
05:11Here you go.
05:15Hello.
05:16This is gonna be fun.
05:19Is your model a man or a woman?
05:21I believe they're non-binary.
05:22Okay, slay.
05:23I always try to design with the queer community in mind.
05:26I identify as non-binary as well.
05:28So for this challenge, I'm doing this whole gender-bendy moment
05:32with this pointed halter neck corset, dramatic hip peignets,
05:35and we might get a little sailor hat out of me.
05:38Do you work with denim a lot?
05:40Actually, yeah, my brand is a denim-based brand.
05:44I started my brand two years ago.
05:47It's called Maison Préfontaine.
05:49Each day of my life, I'm touching denim.
05:52So I'm thinking a maxi gown with a lot of colors
05:56to create a big ombre effect.
05:59I'm super confident.
06:01I'm terrified.
06:03I don't do menswear.
06:05Oh, my God.
06:07I have been a designer for 10 years.
06:10I'm a really big jacket designer.
06:13So I'm making a military jacket and some pants.
06:19I'm good at pants, but these are men's pants.
06:23It's so out of my comfort zone.
06:25You kill it.
06:27I feel like all my ideas are on this paper,
06:29and I need this taken away from me before I overthink.
06:32I think I'm set.
06:34Time's up.
06:35Let's go to the workroom.
06:38What did you pack for our trip?
06:40Denim!
06:42Let's get it.
06:46At stake for the winner from TD,
06:48a career-launching investment of $100,000
06:52and a feature in Elle Canada magazine
06:55with global supermodel Coco Rocha.
06:58Fashion designer Spencer Badu,
07:00creative director Aurora James
07:03and legendary fashion journalist Jeanne Becker.
07:06This is Project Runway Canada.
07:09Watch me do my thing.
07:19Oh, my God.
07:20Oh, my God.
07:21Okay.
07:22It is hitting me that I'm on Project Runway Canada,
07:25seeing the space.
07:26I'm like, oh, my God, I'm here.
07:28Where's my spot?
07:29Oh, I'm right there.
07:30Curtis, you're here.
07:32Are we table besties?
07:34This is gonna be fun.
07:35Yes.
07:40I'm going through all of my denim right now.
07:42I'm kind of freaking out
07:43because I don't even know if I have enough to fit the model.
07:46Do you have a white that you're willing to give up?
07:48Um, I kind of need the white.
07:49Ooh.
07:50Yep.
07:51Do you have a gray?
07:52I'll take a gray.
07:53There's a giant risk with my design
07:54because I'm gonna be shredding the denim
07:56and I don't know if I'm going to finish it.
07:58Do you usually do, um, like, more gowns and stuff?
08:01Oh, no.
08:02I do a combination of everything.
08:03I actually love streetwear.
08:05I've done couture.
08:06I've done streetwear.
08:07So I'm making an asymmetrical ombre effect dress.
08:11It's going to go from black to white
08:13and everything has to be perfect.
08:15Winning Project Runway Canada
08:17would be very validating
08:19in the Canadian fashion landscape.
08:21I want to win this whole thing.
08:23I just don't like what I have to do.
08:24Yeah.
08:25And it's just gonna be a lot.
08:26How's it going?
08:27Um, I'm just adding colors.
08:29In my culture, they used to use the red eyebrows
08:32from the ptarmigans
08:33and they would use it as trim
08:35at the bottom of our garments
08:36so that's kind of my thinking behind this.
08:39So in the Western Arctic,
08:41our fashion is very influenced by the fur trade.
08:44Part of what I like to do
08:46is taking our traditional materials
08:48and using them in new ways.
08:50So I'm planning to make a cocktail dress
08:53that looks very high fashion.
08:55My dream is to do this full time, you know?
08:58I have five children.
09:00I want them to see that this is possible
09:02for someone from Duk-Duyuk-Duk.
09:04I'm like proof that it's never too late
09:06to start chasing your dreams.
09:08Like, you can definitely do it.
09:10Okay.
09:11I'm so a denim girl.
09:13I often wear denim on denim.
09:14I grew up on a farm, so this is my challenge.
09:17I'm thinking a slouchy jacket and a matching pant.
09:21I feel like it's gonna have to be patchwork.
09:24Patchwork can come off really crafty
09:26if it's not perfectly executed.
09:28So I just have to make sure
09:29that it doesn't look like a DIY project.
09:30All right, let's start cutting open jeans.
09:35Hi, designers!
09:37Hey!
09:38Hi!
09:39So this is your very first challenge.
09:42I really want to see what you're up to.
09:49All right, Leland, how's it going?
09:51Oh, wow.
09:52Okay, we're going for it.
09:53Yeah.
09:54This design is definitely in my realm.
09:56I make costumes.
09:57I make costumes every day of my life.
10:00So I want to do more of a streetwear meets Canadian tuxedo.
10:04And I'm adding a very oversized ruched pant
10:08and this deconstructed coat with this little corset.
10:11This is our first challenge,
10:13so I want to show technical skill and the camp and the fun.
10:17You can make something fun,
10:19but high fashion means it's also art.
10:21Yes, of course.
10:23So I pretty much started designing around two years ago.
10:26Self-taught?
10:27Yeah, self-taught.
10:28My aesthetic has a lot of punk rock vibe to it.
10:32You'll see me using vinyls, leather.
10:35So I want to create a two-piece garment for a rebel,
10:38like a good girl gone bad.
10:40Let's see how it goes.
10:41Hi, Naomi.
10:42Hey, girl.
10:43How's it going?
10:44I'm losing my mind.
10:45You are?
10:46Yeah.
10:47Why?
10:48I feel like I'm really in my head.
10:49I haven't even been graduated for a year yet from fashion school.
10:52Don't let that hold you back.
10:54I never graduated fashion school.
10:56Okay.
10:57I'm really excited to see what's going on.
11:00I have a little bolero moment.
11:01Okay.
11:02And a jellyfish denim skirt with lots of chunks of denim coming down.
11:06And I'm kind of debating the top.
11:09Which one's giving you the most high fashion?
11:12This one.
11:13The bra top?
11:15Yeah.
11:16Um, okay.
11:18Which one's giving you the most high fashion?
11:20I don't know.
11:21I feel like maybe it hasn't been drawn yet.
11:26I think you have to, like, pare it back a little bit.
11:29Maybe what I'm making isn't high fashion.
11:32Maybe I'm going in the wrong direction.
11:34I've wasted so much time.
11:35I don't know what I'm doing yet.
11:36And I don't even know where to start.
11:38What is yours?
11:40I'll show it to you, but you can't laugh.
11:41Okay.
11:42Oh, no.
11:44I'm hoping my designs don't look like my drive.
11:46I wanted to bring an elegant twist to denim.
11:48So I'm making a flowy denim train dress.
11:50Denim's not giving me flowy.
11:51No, but it will give you a train.
11:52Okay.
11:53I think.
11:54Where is all this self-doubt coming from?
11:55Because I'm sure.
11:56Well, it sounds super high fashion to me.
11:57Yeah.
11:58That's what's most important.
11:59Ah.
12:00I'm bleeding.
12:01Um, it...
12:02Oh, no.
12:03Oh, no.
12:04Oh, no.
12:05Oh, no.
12:06Oh, no.
12:07Oh, no.
12:08Oh, no.
12:09Oh, no.
12:10Oh, no.
12:11Oh, no.
12:12Oh, no.
12:13Oh, no.
12:14Oh, no.
12:15Oh, no.
12:16Are you okay?
12:17Just a little pin moment.
12:18Not great for my white fabric.
12:20I was very lucky to get these white jeans.
12:22Because I want to create the look of a classic tuxedo shirt.
12:26And I want to do a skirt.
12:28I think my design philosophy is a bit different because I am self-taught.
12:34I actually did a science degree.
12:36I wrote the MCAT and I applied to medical school.
12:39But I'm here to prove that I can do this.
12:42Whew.
12:45Okay, that's not right.
12:47Something didn't go according to plan here.
12:50I need to figure out what it is.
12:52With this design, I want it to look high fashion.
12:56So I am creating a strapless dress with a plunging peak neckline and a floral applique motif.
13:03My concern is that the judges might feel like I didn't push myself enough.
13:08Pushing yourself within this context isn't always about the most work.
13:14Mm-hmm.
13:15It's about the most beautifully executed vision.
13:18Mm-hmm.
13:19Okay.
13:20I'm impressed with some of what I'm seeing, but there's only an hour left tonight.
13:27Get on it.
13:28Awesome.
13:29Thank you, Aurora.
13:31Bye, Aurora.
13:32Okay, I'm gonna go sew these and hope for the best.
13:35So close.
13:36I'm in love with this machine.
13:38Okay, my jeans are done.
13:40Yeah.
13:42I'm looking around and I'm seeing other designers at the machine sewing already.
13:46And I'm a little bit nervous because I haven't started any of my actual sewing yet.
13:51There's no time for this.
13:52So I'm thinking maybe I'll just create a tunic dress.
13:54I'll probably have to utilize all of tomorrow to sew it together.
13:57So I'm just making fabric right now.
14:00Yo.
14:04That looks good.
14:05I'm almost wondering if it needs the overpiece.
14:07Like, do I want to put more work for myself?
14:11I think it needs it.
14:12I'm overwhelmed.
14:14Usually this is something that would take me weeks to finish.
14:20Two days?
14:21I have a lot to do and I'm hoping that I have enough time.
14:25This is hard.
14:27That's it for today.
14:29It's time to go home.
14:31Hell yeah.
14:40Good morning sunshine.
14:42Let's do it.
14:44Straight to the machine.
14:46I know what I'm doing today.
14:48I'm doing the skirt as a short.
14:50Yesterday I knew that I had to start from scratch.
14:53So now I need to go with what I think is high fashion.
14:59I'm trying to decide how much ass I want to show.
15:03This is looking so good.
15:06But I feel terrified that the biggest challenge in my life
15:13is going to be presented to Jeannie Becker.
15:18Hey everyone.
15:19Hey!
15:22The models are going to be here soon.
15:24I'm not sweating.
15:25I'm not sweating at all.
15:28Hi Curtis.
15:29Hello.
15:30How's it going?
15:31This is a pannier in progress.
15:32I'm creating a whole universe with this look.
15:34I'm really inspired by historical silhouettes,
15:36like 17th century hip panniers,
15:39and bringing them into the modern fashion world.
15:41This is looking great.
15:42Just keep in mind, we want a chic first impression.
15:45I'm seeing a nude body form.
15:55The models are going to be here soon.
15:58I feel like it's sewing time.
15:59Yes, it is.
16:00So I'm just kind of panicked.
16:05The individual pieces are all stitched up.
16:07Yes.
16:08I just have to put the bigger pieces together.
16:09I will hopefully have something for the models to try on.
16:11I'm scared.
16:14First impressions sometimes can either make or break you.
16:17I hope that the judges can see my personal take on what elegant is.
16:23I'm just nervous.
16:24I don't have the time to do that.
16:30The corset is going to be good.
16:32I think my secret weapon is my speed.
16:35I've been doing this for so long that I don't second guess myself.
16:40Like, that's gorgeous.
16:42I am half Chinese, half Scottish,
16:44and my Chinese family immigrated here in the 50s
16:47and opened up a dry cleaner that is still there to this day.
16:50They're still working it.
16:51They have such a strong work ethic,
16:53so that's kind of always been instilled in me.
16:55Oh my God, so cool.
16:58That looks amazing.
16:59To be surrounded by such talented designers is intimidating.
17:08I feel like I'm going to throw up.
17:11I just don't think that it will work as, like, a short.
17:15I don't know what to do with my design.
17:17I have a million ideas going on in my head,
17:20but I have all of this beautiful patchwork denim,
17:23so I'm going to sew it together and I'll figure it out.
17:26I just need to trust the process.
17:33Hi, Little Feather.
17:34Hi.
17:35So what else are we doing here?
17:39We're making it deadly.
17:43Okay.
17:44Right now what I'm seeing is, like, a jacket that was a jacket
17:47that still looks like a jacket,
17:49and similarly the pant.
17:51I'm not really focused on the pants.
17:54The judges are going to be looking also at the pants.
17:57Yeah.
17:58Because what I don't want
17:59is for them to look at this and be like,
18:01this is the jacket that they gave her
18:03and she only just added a collar.
18:05It's like, did she do anything?
18:07Then that means it's, like, factory ready in my eyes.
18:10Factory ready.
18:11Yes.
18:12We need runway ready.
18:14All right.
18:15Like, I missed it.
18:30I missed the boat.
18:32You know?
18:33I feel like she's correct.
18:39That's why it hurts so much.
18:42I just have no choice but to take deep breaths
18:45and remember why I'm here for the runway,
18:48and it's like, wait a minute.
18:50You're on freaking Project Runway,
18:53and you've got to be ready for the runway.
18:56You okay?
18:58I am good.
18:59All good.
19:01The vision is coming to life!
19:03Oh, my God!
19:04I know!
19:08Oh, .
19:09I messed up.
19:10How?
19:11Wrong side?
19:13Yeah.
19:14When I was patching the train fabric together,
19:16I didn't flip it the other way.
19:18I made one skirt just facing one side,
19:21and it's not right.
19:22I'm just going to make a full round circle skirt
19:24instead of a train.
19:25Screw it.
19:26Oh, to my goodness.
19:28I'll make it work.
19:31I think I need a model.
19:33All right.
19:34Come on in, models!
19:37Hey!
19:38Oh, my goodness!
19:40Hello!
19:41Yes!
19:42Let's hug it out!
19:43I'm just adding the finishing stitches to the skirt,
19:45and then I want to fit you in quickly.
19:47Yes!
19:50Are you okay?
19:51You're surviving.
19:52You guys have 45 minutes.
19:55Make the most of it.
19:56The pressure is on.
19:57Good.
19:58I'm actually very impressed with how this fits you.
20:00Okay.
20:01Oh, yes!
20:02The dress looks amazing.
20:04It fits her like a glove.
20:06The fit is perfect,
20:07so now I just have to add the flowers in denim.
20:10How long is this going to take?
20:12A few hours.
20:13I just want you to be mindful of not having too many ideas.
20:20Focus on getting the dress really elegant.
20:23Mm-hmm.
20:24Yeah, it looks really cool.
20:26Do something with your arm.
20:27Yeah, there we go.
20:28Oh, wow.
20:29Yeah, it looks great.
20:30I'm super happy.
20:31My jacket is coming together.
20:34I love the pockets on the side.
20:37Now I have to put the grommets on the collar.
20:40I really love it.
20:41I love it.
20:42Oh, my God.
20:43This is so good.
20:44Yes.
20:45I'm so happy.
20:47I just worked so fast.
20:49You really don't have room to make mistakes here,
20:51and you have to take a gamble and hope it pays off.
20:54Oh, my God.
20:55I love it.
20:56Let me see from afar.
20:57Yes.
20:58My model is looking amazing in this outfit.
21:00They still have things to finish,
21:02but this is an introduction to me.
21:04It needs to look flawless, and I think I can do that.
21:07All right, let's get you changed off.
21:09Designers, the fitting is officially over.
21:12Models, I need you guys out.
21:14Goodbye.
21:15See you tomorrow.
21:17Bye.
21:18First runway show is tomorrow,
21:22so stay focused and get it done.
21:26Good night.
21:28Yeah, I know we've got work to do.
21:33It looks like it's almost there,
21:34but they still have to hand sew it.
21:36It's my first runway tomorrow,
21:37and I do not want to be the first one to go home,
21:40so I'm hoping tomorrow I have enough time
21:42to polish everything up.
21:45All righty, folks.
21:46Time to wrap it up.
21:47Brilliant day, guys.
21:57All right, let's get it.
21:58Let's go runway two!
22:00Let's get started.
22:04It's the first runway of the entire competition.
22:07I'm feeling very secure.
22:08I just need to press the out of this dress.
22:12I need to distress the out of the hem,
22:14so I feel like I'm in a really great spot.
22:19Hey, designers.
22:21It is your very first runway day.
22:24Yes!
22:25Let's get your models in here.
22:26Woo!
22:27Look how good they look from the front.
22:29Oh, my great work, baby.
22:30We're going to eat up.
22:31Designers, you have 30 minutes for your final fittings.
22:44The model is here, and I am nowhere near ready.
22:47I have to use half of my fitting time to sew this denim floral applique.
22:53It took forever.
22:54Has this been on the model yet this morning?
22:56Not yet.
22:57I'm going to fit her now.
22:58I've got so much to do.
22:59The hem has to be done.
23:00Do you think I should leave it raw?
23:02No.
23:03I would work on perfecting it.
23:04Even if the judges come close to it,
23:06we don't want them to be like,
23:08I want some of it.
23:12I am not ready.
23:14Sorry, girl.
23:15Sorry.
23:16You're stuck with this kind of designer.
23:17I still have the zipper to put together.
23:19I still have the hem to do.
23:21I'm nervous as hell,
23:23because I don't have something finished.
23:25I took the zipper off to fix it.
23:27Wow.
23:28Okay.
23:29We've got to close it up,
23:30and we've got to get this chalk off,
23:31and...
23:32Okay, get up.
23:33Get up, get up, get up.
23:34Hold on.
23:36Now turn to me.
23:38All right, designers,
23:39it's time to bring your models
23:41to the L'Oreal Paris glam room.
23:46So the whole idea is
23:48she's a good girl gone bad.
23:50So I'm Mindy.
23:51I wanted to hair her up.
23:54So for hair and makeup,
23:56I'm thinking we go 1920s glam.
23:58My staple product in my kit
24:00is the Panorama Mascara.
24:02It's going to fan out your lashes,
24:04giving you corner-to-corner volume.
24:06The eyes are going to look bigger and lifted.
24:10Let's go to the runway.
24:11Let's do this.
24:13It looks so good.
24:18All right, you're fraying the bottom?
24:19Yeah, I'm trying to.
24:20I feel like you're last-minute trying to do something
24:24that you don't need to do.
24:25Last looks, everyone.
24:27Oh, .
24:28Just went right through.
24:30Okay, we're good.
24:32All right, designers, let's go!
24:36Promoto has a dress.
24:37I'm hoping that I'm at least safe.
24:39Let's get to the runway!
24:41Wish me luck.
24:42Yeah.
24:43Hello, designers!
24:45Hi!
24:46Welcome to your first runway!
24:47Tonight, first impressions are everything.
24:57Hello designers, welcome to your first runway.
25:06Tonight first impressions are everything.
25:11Your challenge was to create a high fashion, all denim look that reflects your design DNA.
25:18We want to see your designer jeans.
25:22There are 12 of you now, but after tonight, only 11 will continue on in the competition.
25:31It's time to meet your judges. Fashion designer, Spencer Badu.
25:37Hey designers.
25:39Journalist and fashion television legend, the Jeanne Becker.
25:46Hey everybody, hi, great to see you all.
25:49And our special guest judge, he's dressed Viola Davis, Michelle Obama, and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex.
25:56Hello.
25:57Please welcome designer, Jason Wu.
26:00Hi designers.
26:04We'll be scoring your designs as they come down the runway.
26:07Let's start the show.
26:12Wow.
26:13Yeah.
26:19So good.
26:20I have full body chills.
26:24The fit is fitting.
26:25The hat is sitting.
26:27This is a completely authentic expression of my experience as being a non-binary individual.
26:34Oh.
26:36I'm not used to making menswear at all, but this garment definitely represents my aesthetic, especially with the D-rings and the harnesses.
26:44It's so good, dude.
26:48I've really honed in on what my style is, and that's just rock and roll.
26:55I'm super proud.
26:57This look is powerful.
26:59The collar is sharp.
27:01I feel like it all came together.
27:03I'm just so obsessed with my look.
27:11The ombre, the colors are working, the shape is working.
27:15It's a really proud moment.
27:22Anxiety is just through the roof.
27:25All I see is the imperfections, but the flow, the elegance.
27:30This is a definition of who I am as a designer.
27:34I just hope they see the beauty in what I made.
27:44My look is elegant.
27:47It's timeless.
27:48It's sophisticated.
27:50But did I do enough?
27:52I have some doubts.
27:53Aw.
27:58Oh, yeah.
27:59Yes.
28:01I am super proud of what I've created.
28:03This is very representative of who I am as a designer.
28:07With this look, I'm really trying to prove that I am one of the top competitors.
28:13You do that. You do that.
28:15It's amazing seeing my look come down the runway.
28:21This look screams Maya in every way.
28:25It plays with masculinity, femininity, historical references.
28:29I love it.
28:30I want to show the judges that my culture influences my fashion, but it can also be high fashion for the runway.
28:44The hood is a cultural design feature I learned from my great-grandmother.
28:50I hope they see something in my design.
28:53Oh.
28:58That corset looks so good on her.
29:00It's so snatched.
29:01It literally is hitting her in all the right places.
29:05And then the pants match perfectly.
29:09Head to toe denim, Canadian tuxedo to the max.
29:17I have come so far with this design.
29:20I made multiple garments.
29:21I have come back from the trenches and I produced something that I am proud of.
29:28My blood is drinking from my body.
29:34Ooh.
29:36I love it.
29:38I've never seen a look like this before.
29:40I painted with fabric and I feel like I'm showing all of my technical skills that I've amassed through decades of fashion.
29:46How the f*** won't do that?
29:51That's almost really good.
29:52Designers, please step up to the runway.
29:57Tonight, some of your looks spoke volumes, while others barely whispered.
30:12When I call your name, please step forward.
30:19Rome.
30:22Littlefeather.
30:24Charles.
30:27Kat.
30:29Dalarumic.
30:30Dalarumic.
30:31And...
30:33Delaine.
30:37If I called your name, you are in and can leave the runway. Congratulations.
30:42Sorry.
30:52What a relief.
30:54Goodness.
30:56That means the six of you make up the highest and the lowest scores.
30:59One of you will be our winner and one of you will be out.
31:05So let's look at one of our faves of the night.
31:11Oh.
31:13Thank the Lord.
31:14Yes.
31:16Curtis, I got flight attendant vibes out of this.
31:19I was looking at a lot of denim and it took me to a super masculine, tough work wear type area, which then drew my mind to flip that completely on its head.
31:31This is an amazing representation of exactly what my designs are all about.
31:36Congratulations. I really loved this. The structure, the style.
31:40This is truly couture worthy and you really did elevate denim to new heights. I couldn't even tell it was denim.
31:50This was a great piece. I think it really shows who you are as a designer.
31:54My only critique was the neckline at the back. It did feel a bit loose. I would just tighten that up.
31:58The hat looks good. A lot of times people ruin their looks. It's like that one accessory. You know, so I thought that was really nice. Nicely done.
32:06Thank you, Curtis. Great job.
32:07And now let's see one of our least favorite looks of the night.
32:14The bottom.
32:16Foster, you brought flowers to the denim challenge.
32:19High fashion to me is simplicity and also timelessness.
32:24And I wanted to show the delicate side of denim by using a floral motif.
32:30I always appreciate the charm of a great applique.
32:33But I didn't understand why you decided to go for an unfinished hem.
32:39The top seems very sophisticated, so detailed. And then at the bottom, that's an undone edge.
32:45I think it's just too many ideas in one dress.
32:48The biggest issue would be the fit. I just don't think it was flattering.
32:52Thank you, Foster.
32:53I don't know. I love his piece.
32:55Let's bring out another one of our favorite looks.
33:04Maya, you gave us a new romantic moment. Walk us through it.
33:08The Canadian tuxedo, to me, comes from that history of Canadian frontier and people needing really strong, durable materials to be able to survive.
33:15I wanted to bring that to the elevation of a night out.
33:20I want that jacket. I want the look. Let's put it on my body now.
33:24The jacket was really nice. I like the cusset. It is a nice way to bring softness into denim.
33:30My only critique is I don't think the bag was necessary. Did you make the bag?
33:34No, I did not make the bag.
33:36Sometimes when you design, you just kind of have to edit.
33:38The bag, to me, gave this outfit another level of story. I think that's one of the biggest compliments an outfit can get.
33:48Thanks, Maya.
33:50This next look was one of our least favorites.
33:58Oh, no.
34:01Namo, you kept this look pretty simple.
34:04It's an expression of myself, which is simplicity and elegance. And I also like flowy things.
34:11I just really felt that you weren't pushing it enough. What's new here? This is a look that I've seen a gazillion times.
34:19I'm all for a simple dress. But when you do simple, it has to be perfect. And this was not.
34:25The corset isn't as impeccable as some of your peers.
34:28Yeah, initially when I saw the look, it felt really safe. I didn't really feel like you came through in this dress.
34:34I would have loved to see a bit more risk-taking.
34:37You are subtle. You are quiet. So maybe this is you.
34:41Like I do do more couture detailed work.
34:44Yes. Give me that, Namo.
34:47Thank you, Namo.
34:50And our final favorite look of the night.
34:53Yay!
34:56Leland, tell us how you brought so many elements together here.
35:00So one thing I really wanted to do was incorporate the light acid wash and really go for a fashion moment here.
35:07It made me giddy. I felt this was the Britney Spears Mad Max moment.
35:13Love, exactly.
35:14That deconstructive sort of cape, it looked quite gorgeous.
35:17When I saw it come down the runway, I noticed the shoes and I was like, whoa, this is like a whole look.
35:20So for a first impression, I'm really excited to see what we have in store.
35:25Well, it's a wow, no question. The corset is perfection.
35:30One critique I would have is, I think the pants are a little over ruched, but it's hard to do messy and I think you've done a really good job.
35:38Thank you, Leland.
35:40And our final lowest score.
35:45But she's a 10.
35:46She is a 10.
35:47Hi.
35:49So, Naomi, patchwork and a belarue. Interesting combo. Let's walk through it.
35:54I prototyped multiple things and I wasted hours.
35:59And when I finally decided what I wanted to do, I didn't quite have the time to execute it the way I'd like to.
36:04To me, I see two different personalities here. I think the little bolero jacket shows some promise. The dress is where you fall short. I think this was maybe overly ambitious. And right now, I don't really know who you are as a designer.
36:17I think it just seemed a bit confusing. Maybe you have to develop your voice a bit more.
36:23I like the bolero. I thought that worked. A lot of the rest of the dress really fell apart, especially, you know, from the hip down. It just looked like a mess.
36:32The bottom part, it just didn't go with the top. And you gotta give me that storytelling.
36:38Thank you, Naomi.
36:40Thank you so much.
36:43Thank you, designers. You've given us a lot to think about. It's time for some tough decisions. You can leave the runway.
36:50Hello.
36:59Hi.
37:01Hi.
37:03Hi.
37:05Okay, judges, our top three, Leland, Curtis, and Maya. Who do we think should win?
37:11They're all so good and so promising.
37:13Leland's, it was really nice. I mean, the jacket, cape situation, I mean, that's really impeccably made. And the corset, very good.
37:19And the corset, very clean. Leland was impressive.
37:22Just the sheer amount of things that Leland pumped out, you can really see that he put everything on the table.
37:27Three different pieces that could live on their own, but they actually dance cohesively together.
37:33Maya, I loved this look. There was so much compelling storytelling.
37:39Loved it. I really understood the world that she was creating.
37:42I knew the character. Like, she really delivered in terms of putting an outfit that worked for the model.
37:49There's a point of view.
37:50But there's a point of view with Curtis as well.
37:52That was a shape that I kind of thought was fantastic.
37:54I mean, the silhouette. The craftsmanship.
37:57Stunning.
37:58Really well executed. Details were amazing.
38:00The little hat.
38:01It was meticulous and obviously crafted by someone who really knows what they're doing.
38:06Okay, I think we have our winner.
38:08Now, who do we think should be going home?
38:11Naimo, Foster, or Naomi?
38:14And let's start with Naimo.
38:16It really just looked like a black dress.
38:18Yeah.
38:19I didn't feel like there was a sense of innovation.
38:21I mean, if you're gonna give me a black dress, it better be impeccable.
38:23Yeah.
38:24And it was not. It was messy.
38:26She's just the one that just seems to fall to the back.
38:29And I know it's not about attitude, but there is something about attitude.
38:32Well, there is.
38:33And you can see the attitude in Naomi's clothing.
38:37I like the bolero. I thought it was kind of cute.
38:39Yeah, the bolero was the best part.
38:40The best part.
38:41Put the hand.
38:42It's really a question of a lack of design sophistication.
38:47I think that's Naomi's problem.
38:49And I do think Foster already has that design sophistication.
38:53But, you know, like, that dress was terrible.
38:55It didn't fit.
38:56The flowers look very crafty, but not in a good way.
38:59In a good way.
39:00I don't know who he is as a designer.
39:01Yeah.
39:02Looking at that dress.
39:03But I want to see a little bit more.
39:04The raw hem, I would have loved to see it, you know, cleaned.
39:08Maybe a bit of a blind hem or...
39:10Blind hem wasn't gonna help that dress, let's face it.
39:12It looks like we made our decision.
39:24Curtis, Maya, and Leland,
39:29You've established yourselves as the ones to watch in this competition.
39:33But...
39:35There can only be one winner.
39:37The winning designer is...
39:45Leland.
39:46Hey!
39:47Oh!
39:48I can't believe I won.
39:49Like, what?
39:50I'm happy that I've really showcased myself and, like, my art.
39:51So good.
39:52Thank you, thank you.
39:53Oh, my God.
39:54That means Curtis and Maya, you are also in.
39:55The three of you can lead the runway.
39:56Thank you all.
39:57Congratulations.
39:58We have a winner.
39:59That's so good.
40:00I'm so proud of you, honey.
40:01I told you.
40:02Namo, Foster, and Naomi.
40:03Unfortunately, one of you will be out.
40:05I'm so proud of you, honey.
40:06I told you.
40:07Namo, Foster, and Naomi.
40:09Unfortunately, one of you will be out.
40:11I'm so proud of you, honey.
40:12I told you.
40:13Namo, Foster, and Naomi.
40:15Unfortunately, one of you will be out.
40:16Thank you so much.
40:17I'm so proud of you, honey.
40:18I told you.
40:19Namo, Foster, and Naomi.
40:22Unfortunately, one of you will be out.
40:25Foster, you are in.
40:28You can lead the runway.
40:29Thank you so much.
40:34It all comes down to this.
40:51Naomi, you're all denim distressed us, and not in the right way.
40:57I'm sorry, but you are out.
41:01Oh.
41:02Oh.
41:04Oh, my God.
41:05No, you deserve this.
41:07Namo, you're still in.
41:09You can leave the runway.
41:11I'm just honestly glad to be here.
41:13I met amazing people.
41:14I'm very motivated, and I know I have a very bright future ahead of me.
41:18I agree.
41:19You're gonna kill it.
41:20Thanks, guys.
41:21Thanks, too.
41:22Bye, bye.
41:24We'll kill it.
41:26Take care.
41:27Bye.
41:28Wait, let me hit my pose.
41:29Yes, go, queen.
41:30Love.
41:31Mm.
41:32Uh-oh.
41:33Here's she coming.
41:34It was so lovely to be amongst all of you.
41:38This experience would not have been the same without you.
41:41Hi, guys.
41:42Aurora.
41:43I'm really proud of you.
41:45You have a lot of creativity.
41:47You have a lot of courage.
41:48Can I get a hug?
41:49Yes.
41:50Can we get a group hug?
41:51Yes.
41:52I think I've grown way more than I expected to grow.
41:57This experience was overwhelming, and I let my mind get the best of me.
42:03But this is just the beginning for me.
42:05Maybe I'll be back.
42:07Next time on Project Runway Canada.
42:08I'm pairing you up with content creators for your very first real client challenge.
42:20Oh, my God.
42:21It's a client challenge.
42:22This week is about showing them what we got.
42:25Oh.
42:26I want to see lots of glamour tomorrow.
42:28At the end of the day, it's about keeping the client happy.
42:32I'm just, like, not seeing the vision here yet.
42:35The white face?
42:36It looks like something my mom would wear.
42:38So what are we going to do?
42:39We need a plan.
42:40I need to think.
42:41Let me think.
