00:05From 30 Rockefeller Plaza in New York,
00:09it's Late Night with Seth Meyers.
00:12Tonight, Tony Shalhoub.
00:14From Broadway's all-out comedy about admission,
00:17actress and comedian Jenny Slate.
00:18Hooking with Chef Michael Mandola.
00:24And now, Seth Meyers.
00:28Good evening, I'm Seth Meyers.
00:30This is Late Night.
00:31We hope you're doing well.
00:32And now, if you don't mind, we're going to get to the news.
00:34Tonight was the State of the Union Address,
00:37and President Trump said yesterday
00:38that he was expecting the speech to be long.
00:41Oh, yeah, I think we're all expecting that.
00:45You're incapable of being brief.
00:47Even if you were just going to read a haiku,
00:49I would expect two intermissions.
00:53President Trump tonight delivered his State of the Union Address.
00:56We tape early, so I'll go ahead and fact-check in advance.
01:00Not true, not true.
01:02O.J.'s white bronco was not driven by Joe Biden.
01:07Not true, not true.
01:08And actually, Jonathan Bailey is people's sexiest man alive.
01:14So that's...
01:15Because that's great.
01:17During a White House event yesterday,
01:18President Trump complained that he does not get credit
01:21for his accomplishments,
01:22but does get credit for other people's.
01:26That's right.
01:27President Trump complained that he does not get credit
01:29for his accomplishments and added,
01:31quote,
01:35I don't know.
01:36I feel like if you came up with a cure for cancer,
01:39I would lose respect for cancer.
01:44During the same event,
01:46President Trump said that crazed shooters
01:48only go after consequential presidents
01:50and added that John F. Kennedy was consequential
01:53because, quote,
01:54there was a glamour there.
01:55Yeah, that's why they're going after you.
01:58The glamour.
02:01Can we go...
02:02I have an interesting question about that one, Wally.
02:04Can we go back to the two cards?
02:05I feel like you spelled glamour two different ways.
02:08All right, so there's the punchline with the U.
02:11And in the first one, just the no.
02:14Yeah.
02:16I was just in London,
02:17so that's the London spelling,
02:19the British spelling.
02:19Oh, you were in London,
02:20so you wanted to do one for us and one for them?
02:23Understood.
02:24I respect.
02:26Tip of the cap, Wally.
02:28Tip of cheerio.
02:30North Korean leader Kim Jong-un
02:32was re-elected yesterday
02:34as the head of the ruling political party.
02:36I think because he got out
02:37and really talked to the people,
02:39unlike his opponent,
02:40who never left his grave.
02:46The CEO of Domino's
02:48said in a new interview
02:49that the pizza chain
02:50is looking to double its market share
02:52in part by targeting lower-income customers.
02:55Oh, you mean hoping rich people
02:57order Domino's hasn't worked?
03:01What's the matter?
03:02They can't read the pizza tracker
03:03through their monocle?
03:07Rich people are still wearing monocles, right?
03:11I'm worried that was a dated reference.
03:13Did you see a lot of monocles
03:14over in foggy London town?
03:15I did, actually.
03:16Yeah.
03:18So lucky that we have Wally now
03:20to go to for her.
03:22Our England news.
03:25New York-based food companies
03:26issued a recall
03:27for more than 9,000 pounds
03:29of family-size Italian-style
03:31frozen meatballs
03:32after customers reported
03:34finding pieces of metal.
03:36Though, if they were really Italian-style,
03:38the company would have just said,
03:39eat around it!
03:47I don't even...
03:48I don't know.
03:51You've been to Italy recently?
03:52Is that how they talk?
03:53No? Okay.
03:54Sorry.
03:55All right.
03:56The pharmaceutical company
03:58Novo Nordisk
03:59announced today
04:00that it will reduce the cost
04:01of its weight-loss drugs
04:03in 2027 by up to 50%.
04:05Of course, the hard part
04:06will be keeping it off.
04:11Guess what?
04:12That was a test,
04:13and you all passed.
04:16Finally, the restaurant chain
04:17Applebee's this week
04:18began offering
04:19a New Orleans-themed
04:20Big Easy Burger,
04:22which features
04:23pepper jack cheese,
04:24spicy mustard,
04:25and dewy sausage,
04:26and this is nice,
04:26a jazz funeral.
04:32And that was
04:33a monologue, everybody!
04:36We got a great show
04:38for you tonight.
04:39He's a fantastic actor.
04:42You know from his starring role
04:44on Monk
04:44as well as
04:45The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,
04:46Ketchum in Antigone.

04:58Dying for Sex
04:59and Parks and Recreation
05:01as well as her amazing film

05:03with Shoes On.
05:04She's making her Broadway debut
05:06in all-out comedy about ambition.
05:08Now playing at the
05:08Nederlander Theater,
05:09our friend Jenny Slade
05:10is back on the show!
05:13And he is chef partner
05:15of the 86th
05:16and co-creator
05:17of The Corner Store.
05:18He is going to show us
05:19how to make the perfect steak.
05:20I'm very excited about it.
05:22Michael Vignola
05:22will also be joining us.
05:26Taylor Tomlinson
05:27on Family Chips this week.
05:29An incredible conversation
05:30with her.

05:36you guys?

05:39And, uh...
05:40You know,
05:40I was in my office today
05:41trying to reflect
05:43and couldn't come up
05:44with anything.
05:48Not a single memory.
05:49And you know why?
05:50Because I'm always
05:51looking forward.
05:53You know what?

05:55You know what the best
05:55Late Night we're ever going to do?
05:56I said SNL.
05:59While I'm talking about
06:00living in the future,
06:01I'm like, you know,
06:02SNL...
06:02I mean, Late Night!
06:05You know what the best show
06:06we're ever going to do is?
06:07Tonight.
06:15You were like,
06:16write down some remarks.
06:17I'm like, I'll wing it.
06:20The 98th Academy Awards.
06:21I've moved on.
06:22The 98th Academy Awards
06:24are just a few weeks away.
06:26Here to take us through
06:26the nominees is
06:27Late Night writer
06:28and Criterion Closet

06:32with the Scollywood Minute.
06:40What's up, Seth?
06:41Hey, Scollins.
06:43Just before we start,
06:44you know, I bring you out
06:44to do these
06:45because you're a big movie fan.
06:47We love your insights,
06:48but, you know,
06:49I do feel like they always
06:50just turn into a roast of me.
06:53Oh, that was the old me.
06:54You're living in the past.
06:55All right.
06:56That's great to hear
06:57because I am very excited about this.
06:59So let's talk
07:00about the movies.
07:02All right.
07:03And as you insisted,
07:04we'll start with the white men.
07:05Oh, my God.
07:08Up first,
07:09Ethan Hawke's nominated
07:10for Best Actor in Blue Moon.
07:12Now, Blue Moon's about a guy
07:13who's jealous
07:14of his more talented partner's success.
07:17Oh.
07:21It's the wrong photo.
07:23That's a shame.
07:24But I get why
07:24they would make that mistake.
07:25Oh, come on!
07:27I'm kidding!
07:29Your podcast is just as good.
07:34Besides,
07:35the guy in Blue Moon
07:35clearly has a drinking problem.
07:42Wait,
07:42is this movie about you?
07:44You know what?
07:44Just move on from Blue Moon.
07:46All right.
07:46All right.
07:46You got it.
07:47We've also got Sinners,
07:48the most nominated movie
07:49in Oscar history.
07:57Applause kind of feels
07:57like stolen valor,
07:58but all right.
08:00Now,
08:01this movie was really scary.
08:02For us,
08:03because of the vampires,
08:04and for Seth,
08:04because of the interracial couple.
08:06Scullens!
08:09You can't say that!
08:11Okay,
08:12well, now I have nothing
08:13for one battle after another.
08:14Oh, my God.
08:16What else is nominated?
08:18Sentimental Value.
08:19Great.
08:21Applause!
08:26Seth hasn't gone
08:27through this many tissues
08:27in the theater
08:28since The Housemaid.
08:29No!
08:31Laughter!
08:35Also nominated
08:36for Best Picture,
08:37F1.
08:38Applause!
08:39I wouldn't have
08:40been following that.
08:41Applause!
08:43Seth,
08:44weren't you just
08:44talking about F1?
08:45Was I?
08:47Yeah, yeah.
08:47You said I want
08:48to F1 of the interns?
08:49How?
08:53How have we allowed
08:54this to be
08:55a recurring segment?
08:58Just tell me
08:59who's the best actress.
09:01Your wife
09:01when she has an orgasm.
09:03Oh!
09:05In a film!
09:07Oh,
09:07she would never
09:09let you film that.
09:09Okay, you know what?
09:11But it's snubs.
09:12Let's talk about
09:13Oscar snubs.
09:14Who was snubbed
09:14this year?
09:15Bradley Cooper's
09:16Is This Thing On?
09:18Not to be confused
09:18with Seth's movie,
09:19Is This Thing In?
09:20Okay, you know what?
09:26That's not a real movie.
09:27You made that up.
09:28Would you rather
09:29I talk about
09:29your real movie?
09:30No, no, no.
09:31Just go back to
09:33Is This Thing In?
09:36But the biggest snub
09:37was from my king,
09:38Adam Sandler,
09:39and Jay Kelly.
09:39Oh, man, yeah,
09:40I love that movie.
09:41When they showed clips
09:42of Clooney's best work
09:44and he got all teary-eyed.
09:46Well, I'm glad you think so, Seth,
09:47because I had them
09:48make one for you.
09:53Where is it?
09:54They couldn't find anything.
09:57You know what?
09:57We're done.
09:58We're done.
09:58I can't believe I trust you.
09:59What is the one thing
10:00you're hoping to see
10:01at the Oscars?
10:02You and the In Memoriam.
10:07You were confident
10:08about that one
10:09as the closer?
10:11I felt pretty good about it.
10:12Mike Scully,
10:13ladies and gentlemen!
10:15And Sam is the best actor.
10:17We will be right back
10:18with Tony Salud.
10:38Electric vehicles
10:40are everywhere these days
10:41and more drivers
10:42are discovering the benefits
10:43of owning an EV.
10:45I found this out firsthand
10:46this past weekend.
10:48Check it out.
10:49I guess this is the address.
10:52Knock on garage door
10:54three times
10:55and say sha-na-na.
10:58Sha-na-na!
11:07Lutz,
11:08how you like me now?
11:10What is this?
11:11It's my new EV.
11:12You like?
11:13Sure, but when you texted me
11:15to meet you here,
11:15you said it was urgent.
11:16Yeah, I urgently needed you
11:17to see my cool new EV.
11:19Lutz, I had to take
11:20three different subway lines
11:21and two buses to get here.
11:22It took me an hour
11:23and 45 minutes.
11:23And when you see this puppy,
11:25you'll know it was worth it.
11:26Get in here!
11:27All right, fine,
11:28but only because it's freezing.
11:29300 to 400.
11:31What's that?
11:32Well, most people
11:33think that EVs
11:34don't have a lot of range,
11:35but many can go
11:36300 to 400 miles
11:38on one charge.
11:39That is more than I thought.
11:40180 to 200.
11:41Oh, is that the number of miles
11:42you get driving a regular car?
11:44No, it's my target weight
11:45from a new diet.
11:46Okay, so we can just
11:47stop saying numbers now.
11:4810-4.
11:49Lutz?
11:496-7.
11:50Stop it.
11:51Okay.
11:52Hey, you want to check out
11:53the interior?
11:53Sure.
11:54But before you do,
11:55you want to throw your bag
11:56in the frunk?
11:57It's where I keep
11:58all my road trip snacks.
12:00I think I'll just
12:00keep my bag with me.
12:02Okay.
12:04Wow.
12:05This is actually
12:06really nice.
12:07And there's way less
12:08maintenance to worry about
12:09with these bad boys.
12:10I won't have to ignore
12:11a check engine light anymore.
12:13Oh, you should
12:13never ignore those.
12:15Oh, did you know
12:16that you can just
12:16charge at night
12:17from your home
12:18while you sleep?
12:18Or in my case,
12:19during the day
12:20while I sleep?
12:21You mean when
12:21you're supposed
12:22to be working?
12:22Oh, wait!
12:24You know what would
12:24make this even cooler?
12:26Oh, what's that?
12:27I got the illest
12:28cassette selected
12:30Try to perpetrate
12:31and you get ejected
12:32I'm shaking the block
12:33and the block is locked
12:34I ain't nothing
12:35without my box
12:37Box, box, box, box
12:40Rocking for blocks
12:41and blocks my box
12:42Box, box, box
12:43Okay, that's enough.
12:45I'm going home.
12:46Is it going to take you
12:47an hour and 45 minutes
12:48to get there?
12:49Yes.
12:49Wow, that's long.
12:51Yeah, I know.
12:52So, do you want
12:53a ride?
12:55Yes.
12:56My box
13:00Rocking for blocks
13:01and blocks
13:01My blocks
13:03Can I stop home first?
13:04Isn't that
13:05in the other direction?
13:06Yes, then no.
13:07Oh.
13:08Everything you want
13:08to know about EVs
13:09you can find
13:10at electricforall.org
13:12The way forward
13:13is electric.
13:14We'll be right back
13:14with more Late Night.
13:32Our first guest tonight
13:33is an Emmy
13:34and Tony Award-winning actor
13:35you know from his work
13:36on Monk
13:37and the marvelous
13:37Mrs. Maisel.
13:38He stars in Antigone,
13:40this play I read
13:41in high school
13:42which begins performances
13:43February 26th
13:44at the Public Theater
13:45here in New York.
13:46Please welcome back
13:46to the show
13:47my very good friend
13:48Tony Shalhoub, everybody.
13:49Tony Shalhoub, everybody.
14:03Hello!
14:04How are you, my friend?
14:05Nice crowd.
14:06It's a very lovely crowd.
14:07A very lovely crowd.
14:08You know, I'm very happy
14:09to see you
14:09but a friend of ours
14:10did not make the trip
14:11this time.
14:12Yeah.
14:13Last time you were here
14:14you had a very
14:15substantial mustache.
14:18And I, were you sad
14:19to see it go or?
14:21Well, you know,
14:21I had had it for quite a while
14:23so I thought maybe
14:24it was time to let it go
14:25and then once I shaved
14:26I was like, wow.
14:28Because they really do
14:29hide a lot of sins.
14:31Yeah.
14:32And I think my ideal look
14:36you know, moving forward
14:38will be like
14:38a gigantic full beard.
14:40Oh, you think
14:40you're going to go.
14:41Yeah, you maybe thought
14:42you didn't go far enough
14:43last time.
14:44Yeah.
14:44I, I, I,
14:46this is
14:47not as good.
14:49I'm a big fan.
14:50That's not why
14:50I like the mustache.
14:51One, I just thought
14:52I, especially in like
14:53blizzard conditions
14:54I feel like a mustache
14:56is a very helpful
14:57thing to have
14:58because it's like
14:58a face scarf.
14:59Yeah, it is.
15:00Exactly.
15:01Exactly.
15:02How did you,
15:02how did you feel
15:03about our, I mean
15:04it wasn't, you're
15:04from Green Bay, Wisconsin
15:05right?
15:06So this, this was
15:07not a blizzard.
15:07This is more
15:08what we would call
15:09like a light dusting.
15:10Yeah.
15:11Yeah.
15:13We would get
15:14so much snow there.
15:16Right?
15:16And it was
15:18you know
15:19when we were young
15:20we lived on a,
15:21on a corner.
15:22Right?
15:23And my dad
15:24had paved the driveway.
15:25So it was my job
15:27and my brother Dan's job
15:28to, to shovel
15:28the walk
15:29and the driveway.
15:31So my dad's
15:32method was
15:33to get us out there
15:34like when the snow
15:35started.
15:37So they would never,
15:38it would never even
15:39hit the ground.
15:40Well, well,
15:41right.
15:41But it would,
15:42you would shovel
15:43and then after
15:44two and a half hours
15:45and you'd be finished
15:47you'd have to start over.
15:48Yeah.
15:49Because you look
15:50behind you
15:50and it's like
15:50okay, well there's
15:51was his thinking
15:53that it was like
15:53better to just
15:54like get a head start
15:55on it?
15:55I think his thinking
15:56was just get us
15:57out of the house.
15:58Yeah.
15:58Get us,
15:59get us out of his hair
16:00get us exercising
16:01you know,
16:02keeping us out of trouble.
16:03We've talked about
16:03the size of your family
16:05before.
16:05How many siblings again?
16:06I have nine siblings.
16:07Nine siblings.
16:08And you do have
16:09a family reunion.
16:11You'll do it
16:11in Wisconsin
16:12when you do it,
16:13correct?
16:14Right.
16:14We do it every
16:14summer for a week.
16:16Week.
16:16And now nine siblings
16:18that's a lot of family.
16:19How big does it
16:19swell to?
16:21It has now
16:22expanded to
16:2452, 53 people.
16:26Wow.
16:26That's incredible.
16:27Which is a lot
16:27because we don't
16:28really cater it.
16:29And my...
16:31I was worried
16:31you were going to say
16:32we don't really
16:33like each other.
16:35Well, is it funny
16:36you should?
16:36I said it because
16:37we...
16:38My daughter,
16:39Josie,
16:40and I just
16:42finished a cookbook.
16:43Actually, it's a...
16:44Yep.
16:44It's a kind of
16:44a family reunion.
16:47All right, this is...
16:47I'm glad we set up
16:48there's a family reunion
16:50cookbook.
16:50Well, it's a kind of a...
16:51Yeah, it started out
16:52as we were going to do
16:53like, let's do like
16:54of all the family recipes,
16:56well, like 100 recipes.
16:57And we sold this idea
16:58to Simon & Schuster
16:59that were really
17:00very supportive of us.
17:01But then as we started
17:02going and we started
17:03like submitting stories,
17:05it's like, well,
17:05how about more stories
17:06and fewer recipes?
17:08Right.
17:08Now we're down
17:09to like 20 recipes
17:11and just the rest
17:12is just narrative,
17:13which is...
17:14I will say,
17:15as titles go,
17:16I think this is a great
17:17title for a cookbook
17:18about getting together
17:20with your family.
17:20Yeah.
17:21We thought they'd never leave.
17:23Yeah.
17:24Yeah, that's it.
17:26That's really great.
17:28It comes out...
17:32It comes out in the fall?
17:33It comes out in the fall.
17:34You wrote it with Josie.
17:36Josie and I did it together.
17:37But again,
17:38these were a lot
17:39of your family stories.
17:41So Josie was probably
17:42too young to obviously
17:43have experienced them.
17:44Did you have to then
17:45lean on your siblings
17:46for memory?
17:47Right.
17:48I did.
17:49Some of these stories,
17:50you know,
17:50they were sort of part
17:51of the family lore.
17:52Right.
17:52Right.
17:52But I was young
17:53for some of that,
17:54some of those events,
17:56some of those stories.
17:57So I was constantly calling
17:59my older brothers and sisters
18:00like, hey, I need,
18:01you know, give me what you got.
18:02I got so many insights
18:04and details.
18:06We did a deep dive
18:07with each one.
18:08So really, really cool,
18:10cool family stories.
18:12I mean, you can imagine
18:13it's chaos.
18:14You, uh, this was,
18:15I think you were too young
18:16for this one,
18:17but tell us the story
18:18about your dad getting
18:20a summer job
18:20for all of his children.
18:22Yeah.
18:23So we spend our summers
18:25where we actually
18:26now do our reunions
18:27in this little resort area
18:28in northeastern Wisconsin.
18:30And there was a restaurant
18:31up there, you know,
18:32mostly a seasonal place.
18:34And all the owners
18:36didn't want to run it
18:37one summer.
18:37They had something else
18:38going on,
18:38so they wanted to rent it out.
18:40And my father, you know,
18:42stepped in and was like,
18:43my kids will do it.
18:45My, we'll take it.
18:48Take it for the whole summer.
18:48Had not told my siblings
18:50the plan.
18:51Yeah.
18:51Before, before making the deal.
18:53So that's one of the stories.
18:55And so they all just went in there
18:56with not a lot of experience
18:57and ran a very, very busy
19:00seven day a week,
19:02three meals a day.
19:02Wait, they managed a restaurant?
19:04They ran a...
19:06They managed, you know,
19:08dealt with the vendors,
19:09cooked the food,
19:10bought the...
19:11waited on tables.
19:12Now, obviously,
19:13he wasn't honest
19:14with your siblings
19:15before he got the job.
19:16Was he honest with the people
19:17who own the restaurant?
19:19Well...
19:21He...
19:22Was he like,
19:23I've got a team of restauranteurs
19:25who will take it over?
19:26Yeah, I mean, yeah, define honest.
19:28Yeah, what he said was,
19:29I've got a, you know,
19:31kids, you know,
19:32they're great,
19:33they're hard workers,
19:34they'd be happy to do it.
19:36They were, let's just say,
19:37they weren't all that happy
19:39to do it.
19:39Well, it's one thing to be like,
19:41because when you, like,
19:42wait tables at a summer job,
19:43like, you can call in.
19:44Like, if you're too hungover,
19:45you can call in and be like,
19:46I'm sick today.
19:46When you're managing a restaurant...
19:49Yeah, you're opening it
19:50in the morning, you're, you know,
19:51you're locking it up at night,
19:53and...
19:53I feel like now,
19:54I felt bad that you had
19:55to shovel the walk,
19:56but I think you had
19:57the easiest job
19:57your dad ever got in.
19:58Absolutely.
20:00This is very exciting.
20:01Antigone, this is not a,
20:02this is not a fresh new play.
20:04This is the,
20:05this is the original Antigone.
20:06Well, it's based on the original.
20:08The original is from,
20:09like, 400 B.C. or something,
20:11but this is an updated version
20:13called Antigone,
20:14this play I read in high school.
20:15And did you read it in high school?
20:17Did you have any memories of reading?
20:18I'm sure I read it,
20:19have no memories of it.
20:20Yeah.
20:20But, um, and that's why
20:22everyone needs to see the play,
20:23because this art production really,
20:26even though it's a modern
20:27sort of take on the story,
20:29kind of catches people up
20:30on the original
20:31and makes it super relatable,
20:33because it's about governance,
20:34and it's about, you know,
20:36the squelching of, of, of,
20:39of, you know, civil rights,
20:41about individual rights,
20:43especially for women,
20:44and about the complexity
20:45of, of, of governance.
20:47And it's, could not be more timely.
20:49That's fantastic.
20:50Climate we're in.
20:51It's very exciting
20:52to have you on, on stage.
20:54It's very exciting
20:55to have you on screen.
20:57Bolio, Spirit of the Mustang.
20:59Okay, yeah, this is a friend of,
21:01a friend of ours got into where,
21:02this is a movie that Brooke and I
21:04are co-producers on,
21:06and we also do cameo parts in it.
21:08Really fun comedy.
21:09Eugene Cordero is a very funny guy.
21:10Eugene and, and, and Gabe Hogan,
21:13and a lot of other
21:14really great, funny people.
21:15My friend Jim Issa directed it
21:18and co-wrote it.
21:18And it's going to be
21:20coming out later this year.
21:21I was just going to mention
21:22really quickly, too,
21:23I've been busy.
21:24So there's a,
21:27another show,
21:28a TV streamer
21:30that's starting March 1st.
21:31Okay.
21:32Called American Classic.
21:33You have been busy.
21:34Which is about Kevin Kline
21:35and Laurel Linney.
21:37And it's about,
21:37it's sort of a love letter,
21:38love letter to the American theater.
21:40Really funny, really beautiful.
21:42Very proud of that one.
21:43That's fantastic.
21:44I'm glad you're talking about,
21:47I'm glad, by the way,
21:48do you have something else?
21:49Did I mention that it premieres
21:51on MGM Plus?
21:52MGM Plus is where it premieres.
21:54I'm very happy that you are
21:55talking about stuff
21:56that's about to come out
21:57because I was about to shout out
21:59the fact that Cars is 20 years old.
22:03Which is like less helpful.
22:07We're, we really,
22:08we want to help Cars
22:09do great numbers this week.
22:11Yes, please.
22:12You know,
22:13my children are lucky enough
22:15to know you personally.
22:17By the way,
22:17I did see the segment
22:18where you had them on the show.
22:21So you see,
22:21it reminded me like,
22:22because I've been working
22:23with my daughter
22:24and she's now
22:26working together on the book,
22:27but also,
22:27she has started
22:28a production company
22:29and we're involved
22:30in projects with her.
22:32She's getting into writing
22:33and producing.
22:34And it's so,
22:36it's great working
22:37with your kids.
22:38It is.
22:38When I saw your three here,
22:40I sort of think,
22:41well, they're probably
22:42taking over your show.
22:43Yeah.
22:44I mean,
22:45you're going to be
22:45working for them.
22:47Oh, a hundred.
22:47By the way,
22:48like, when it was over,
22:49they talked to me
22:50like my agent.
22:51They were like,
22:52that's great,
22:52we should get lunch
22:53and talk about other stuff.
22:55Yeah, yeah.
22:56But they're very excited.
22:58You know,
22:58when they watched Cars
22:59and we were like,
22:59yo, that's Uncle Tony's voice
23:01and they don't like it.
23:04They don't like the voice
23:05or the movie?
23:05No, they like this character
23:07and they like you.
23:08They didn't like
23:09knowing you were this.
23:10Oh.
23:12They were like,
23:12ah,
23:13they're like,
23:14the magic's gone.
23:15Oh.
23:16Yeah.
23:16So, you know,
23:17in the future
23:18when you do voiceover work,
23:19just don't tell us.
23:20Now they know
23:20what my wife feels like.
23:23How dare you?
23:24She misses the mustache.
23:25Just be honest.
23:26She misses it.
23:27Thanks for being here.
23:28It's always a pleasure
23:29to see you.
23:30Tony Salud, everyone.
23:32Antigone,
23:33this play I read
23:34in high school
23:34begins performances
23:35this Thursday
23:36at the Public Theater.
23:37We'll be right back
23:37with Penny Slate.
23:57Welcome back, everybody.
23:58Our next guest is an Emmy-nominated actress,
24:01comedian,
24:02and best-selling author.
24:03You know from shows like
24:04Dying for Sex
24:05and Parks and Recreation,
24:06as well as her film
24:07Marcel Lachelle
24:08with Shoes On.
24:09She's making her Broadway debut
24:10in All Out,
24:11Comedy About Ambition,
24:12which is playing
24:13at the Nederlander Theater.
24:14Please welcome back
24:14to the show
24:15our friend Jenny Slade,
24:16everybody.
24:32Hi, how are you?
24:35You look amazing.
24:36Amazing outfit.
24:38So I feel that this outfit
24:39is like an expression
24:41of my personality exactly.
24:43Yeah.
24:43It's like, oh, what's Jenny like?
24:44She's like this.
24:45Yeah.
24:46I think when I saw it,
24:47I was like, oh,
24:47do they call that the Jenny?
24:49Yeah, they should.
24:50They should.
24:50I'd love to get paid for that.
24:52Oh, yeah.
24:53Yeah.
24:53We can see if we can figure that.
24:54Can we figure that?
24:55We can get her paid for that.
24:55Yeah.
24:56It happened here.
24:57I'm very happy
24:58that you are making
24:59your Broadway debut.
25:00This is written by Simon Rich.
25:02Totally.
25:05You share the stage
25:07with an incredible cast,
25:08Jake Shane, Nicholas Braun,
25:10Ray Romano.
25:11Holy moly.
25:12How have you enjoyed
25:13their company so far?
25:14Whoa!
25:15I really like them.
25:17Yeah.
25:17A lot.
25:18If my life just became
25:19those are my only friends,
25:21I love all my other friends,
25:22but I'd be fine.
25:23Yeah.
25:23I love them.
25:25And, you know,
25:25Ray Romano,
25:26it's just like,
25:27you've got to be kidding me, man.
25:29Yeah.
25:29He is so nice
25:30and he's so good at acting.
25:32And I already was so obsessed
25:34with him before this,
25:35but I haven't told him that.
25:36Yeah.
25:36Awesome to say it here.
25:38I, you know,
25:39my parents,
25:40to this day,
25:42when I go home and visit them,
25:43they have taped a rerun
25:45of Everybody Loves Raymond.
25:46And so we just sit and watch it.
25:49Whoa.
25:50It's so great.
25:51It's so great.
25:52And now that I, like,
25:53know him a little
25:54and I, like, love him,
25:55I feel like he doesn't get treated well
25:57by his family in that show.
25:58Yeah.
25:59I agree.
26:00I'm just like,
26:00give him a break.
26:01I agree.
26:02Just, oh, my gosh.
26:03They say they love Raymond,
26:04but do they?
26:04Do they?
26:05You know?
26:06I should have had a question mark
26:07at the end of that title.
26:08Man, do they?
26:09Yeah.
26:09Everybody loves Raymond.
26:12You're not showing it.
26:13Yeah.
26:14How are your nerves?
26:15How are your Broadway nerves?
26:16What do they seem like?
26:19They're fine!
26:22Yowie!
26:22Um, well...
26:25Here's the thing.
26:26Okay.
26:27Here's the thing.
26:28I...
26:30I...
26:30On the positive side,
26:31I like, like, magic-y stuff,
26:34like making a wish on an eyelash,
26:35for example.
26:36A shooting star,
26:37I'm like, I wish...
26:38You know, whatever.
26:40Negative side,
26:41I'm a bit superstitious.
26:42Uh-huh.
26:43And it kind of is like,
26:44it can be like a sort of
26:45stupidy karma kind of thing
26:47where I'm like,
26:47oh, if I, like, did that thing,
26:50so that will probably happen to me.
26:52Okay, let me just...
26:53Sorry.
26:53So to get to what I'm talking about,
26:55everyone is like,
26:57what?
26:59Is this the play?
27:00Um...
27:02So, unfortunately,
27:03but fortunately for me,
27:05I have spent over a decade
27:07taking a lot of personal time
27:10watching something on YouTube
27:11that is called
27:14Peter Pan Fails.
27:15Okay.
27:16Okay?
27:17And I'm like, okay,
27:19this is...
27:19For a while, it was great,
27:21because it's like,
27:22here's what this is.
27:23Okay.
27:23Someone pulls the wrong pulley,
27:25okay?
27:26They pull the wrong...
27:27During a stage production
27:28of Peter Pan.
27:29Of Peter Pan.
27:29Okay.
27:30You know, all these kids,
27:31they're like,
27:31tender shepherd,
27:33and then they, like,
27:33go to sleep,
27:35and they're supposed
27:36to be sleeping,
27:37and someone,
27:38God bless us all,
27:39backstage is like,
27:40and now cue Peter,
27:42but instead,
27:43they just rip someone else
27:45out of their bed.
27:46And they, like,
27:48they bonk the wall,
27:49and they have to, like,
27:51stay in character.
27:51It's like...
27:52And there's so many of these.
27:53There's one where, like,
27:54the window's open,
27:54it's like,
27:55da-da-na-na-na-na.
27:56Peter's, like,
27:57about to come.
27:57You can feel it
27:58in your spirit.
27:59And, like,
27:59Peter lands,
28:00and he's like,
28:01yeah,
28:01and then the whole stage
28:02falls over.
28:05But now I'm like,
28:06oh, no,
28:07now I made all...
28:07You know,
28:07we're all laughing.
28:08Oh, so you think
28:08this bad stuff
28:09is gonna happen to you
28:10because you've taken
28:11so much joy from it.
28:12That's right.
28:13It's like, oh,
28:13you think that's funny?
28:14Now you're gonna fall
28:14right off the stage,
28:15you idiot.
28:17Is there a favorite
28:19Peter Pan fail?
28:22Could you maybe...
28:24Oh, sorry.
28:26There happens to be...
28:28My body knew the score.
28:30Yeah.
28:30Yeah.
28:31And could you maybe...
28:32Would you mind maybe
28:33giving us a staged
28:35rendition of that?
28:36I would love to do that.
28:37Okay, okay.
28:38Here's what happens.
28:39It's like,
28:39Wendy is sleeping.
28:41Okay?
28:43She's sleeping.
28:44She's like...
28:46And all of a sudden,
28:47she's just like...
28:50And she gets knocked
28:51against the wall,
28:52but she fully stays in character
28:54and they, like, lower her down.
28:56She's like...
28:59She stays in character.
29:00She's in a nightgown.
29:02She looks like a freaking ghost.
29:03She goes...
29:05Like, ooh,
29:07must have been a dream, mama.
29:09And then she's, like,
29:10obviously so scared
29:12to be in the play.
29:13And she's like...
29:13But she's Wendy still.
29:15She's Wendy,
29:16but she's clearly, like,
29:17Kathleen from Connecticut.
29:19And she's like...
29:20Oh, my God.
29:21And then she just walks
29:22back to her bed.
29:23She's like...
29:27And then she just gets
29:28into her bed.
29:30And they hit the wall
29:31so hard, man.
29:33They just hit it.
29:35They hit it so hard.
29:37Oh, my God.
29:38It's, like,
29:38my favorite thing.
29:41And I really hope
29:42none of these actors feel bad.
29:43Like, it's not their fault
29:44that someone ripped the wrong cord.
29:46Yeah.
29:46You know?
29:47I mean, I would say, like,
29:49based on karma,
29:50you should never let anybody
29:51clip a wire on you.
29:52Obviously, you know that.
29:53Oh, yeah.
29:54Completely.
29:55And I do.
29:55I mean, it's right now.
29:56Oh, you mean the wire
29:57for the thing?
29:58Yeah, because that's like...
29:59I thought you meant...
30:02You know what I mean?
30:03Like, once you let somebody
30:04clip into you,
30:05like, then you're in God's hands.
30:07Yeah.
30:08As if I'm ever going to be cast
30:09in anything where I have
30:10to be on a wire, you know?
30:12Oh, I think you could be
30:13on a wire.
30:14You think?
30:15Yeah.
30:15Like, as a bag of laundry?
30:19Like, it's just like...
30:20I just...
30:20Like, you can only do...
30:22Every actor has their limits.
30:23It's like, look,
30:24I can't do a British accent.
30:25I just sound like Mrs. Doubtfire.
30:26It's not happening.
30:27Yeah.
30:28And also, it's like,
30:29I'm not great at, like,
30:30being tough.
30:31Yeah.
30:32And I feel like
30:32if you plugged me into a wire,
30:34I would just scream the whole time
30:35and say, I want to get down.
30:36Oh, right, right, right.
30:37And that would probably...
30:37And you think that would
30:38take people out of the play?
30:39Yeah.
30:41You never know.
30:42Speaking of, you have...
30:43You have come here in the past.
30:45Yeah.
30:46This isn't a gotcha show
30:47or anything.
30:48Isn't it, though?
30:49No.
30:49But you and...
30:50I remember you saying once,
30:51like, you don't actually
30:52like seeing plays.
30:54I did say that,
30:55and I even said it
30:56in my last special,
30:57like, first joke.
30:58Yeah.
30:58For sure.
30:59And so now you're in...
31:00I mean, again,
31:00it's sort of a staged reading,
31:02but I think a lot of people,
31:03once it has a playbill,
31:04like, it's technically...
31:05That's a play.
31:06So you're in a play.
31:07Yeah.
31:07And so...
31:10So what happened?
31:11Yeah, totally.
31:15Um...
31:15Uh, okay, yeah.
31:17This play I like to be in.
31:18Okay, great.
31:19I don't know
31:20that I want to be in another one.
31:21Okay.
31:22Because if Ray Romano
31:23and Jake Shane
31:24and Nick Bronner,
31:25if they're not in,
31:26I'm not doing it.
31:26Right, you're in
31:27for the next Romano play.
31:28Right.
31:29Annie starring Ray Romano.
31:30I'll be Annie.
31:31Fine, I'll do it.
31:32Um, but I don't know
31:34if I really want to see plays
31:36or be in them again.
31:38And it's just like,
31:39it's a little bit too much.
31:41It's like,
31:42usually I'm like,
31:42look, I know you're you.
31:44You know,
31:44like a person comes out,
31:45I'm like,
31:45you're not,
31:46you're you.
31:47I see.
31:47You know what I mean?
31:48So you just,
31:48you see actors,
31:49you don't get lost in the play.
31:51Right.
31:51But then I was like,
31:52maybe I should,
31:53maybe I should just take that back.
31:55Maybe I should give it another try
31:56because I'm about to be in a play.
31:57So let me not be a hypocrite.
31:59Recently,
31:59I went,
31:59let me not be a hypocrite.
32:01Recently,
32:02I went to a play.
32:03Yeah.
32:04And I expected to kind of be like,
32:06it's a play.
32:07And instead,
32:08what happened,
32:09unfortunately,
32:10was that I became very involved
32:13in that the,
32:14I went to see Michelle Williams
32:15and Anna Christie.
32:16Fantastic.
32:17I was lucky enough to see it as well.
32:19Genius.
32:19Yep.
32:20Totally.
32:22Yep.
32:22Really good.
32:24And, oh, woe-ee,
32:26there's a young man in that play.
32:28Yeah.
32:29He was pretty sexual.
32:30Yeah.
32:30Okay.
32:31I was watching the play
32:33and I became completely unaware
32:35of how I was relating to my own body.
32:37I was fully turned on.
32:39I like had drool coming out of my mouth.
32:42I was freaked out by the play
32:44in that it like made me too horny.
32:46And I was like,
32:46this is why you can't go to plays.
32:47Yeah.
32:49Like, they're crazy.
32:49Do you feel like you were alone
32:50in your horniness?
32:52Or did you sort of feel like
32:53maybe it was affecting other people?
32:54Oh, everyone in that audience
32:55and on the big group text
32:58that I was on afterwards,
32:59everyone was like,
32:59did you guys see that guy?
33:01Like, he was like growling.
33:02He was like,
33:03I'm gonna marry you.
33:05You're gonna make me marry.
33:07Like, which is also like,
33:09I would say my sexuality,
33:11unfortunately,
33:12is like really formed
33:13by the beast
33:14in Beauty and the Beast
33:14being like,
33:15you'll have dinner with me tonight.
33:17Like that, like,
33:18I'm like, oh,
33:19I'm in love with you.
33:19You like that energy.
33:21Yeah, you will go out with me?
33:25That guy did have,
33:26that was a very,
33:27that's a, yeah,
33:28it was a lot.
33:29Could you,
33:29I hate to put you on the spot,
33:31can I ask you something real quick?
33:32Sure.
33:33Could you, what,
33:33could you just act out
33:34a quick scene
33:35with that gentleman
33:36from the play?
33:37Yeah.
33:37If he was on a wire
33:38that got him, sort of.
33:39Oh, my God.
33:41Yeah, okay.
33:42Okay, so this guy,
33:43he's like,
33:44I wanna marry you.
33:47Like, that's it.
33:48And then he just gets yoinked up.
33:50It's yoinked up.
33:51But then maybe he gets,
33:52he gets slammed,
33:53like slammed,
33:54just slammed into the side
33:55of the boat.
33:56But he doesn't care.
33:57But he doesn't care,
33:58because he's such a tough guy.
33:58He's so in love.
33:59He's like,
34:00this isn't gonna stop me.
34:01You're gonna marry me tonight,
34:03we're gonna make love.
34:05Though,
34:06I think the nightmare
34:07for like a tough male actor
34:08would be if they lower you back
34:10but your toes just stay
34:11a little bit.
34:13Like, you'd either wanna be
34:14way high or all the way down.
34:15But like that,
34:16it's tough to be tough
34:18when you're just a little.
34:19To be tippy toes.
34:19Yeah.
34:20To be tippy toes.
34:21Well, that's like the best part
34:22of the studio,
34:24when Bryan Cranston,
34:25I don't know if anybody
34:26loves the studio,
34:27but he's just like
34:28marionetting and he's...
34:30A little tippy toes.
34:31Very hard to be masculine
34:32when just it's the tippy toes.
34:34Oh, I agree.
34:35And, you know,
34:35we're all trying our best.
34:37Yeah.
34:38That's all we can do.
34:40I love seeing you everywhere.
34:42I'm very excited
34:43people can see you here.
34:44Me too.
34:44Thank you for being back, Jenny.
34:46You are just a delight.
34:47Good to see you, everybody.
34:48All Out Comedy,
34:49Not a Big Show,
34:50and Tonya,
34:50and the theater on Broadway.
34:51We'll be right back
34:52with Chef Michael Vignola.
35:13We're here with Michael Vignola, everybody.
35:16Chef Cardner of the 86
35:18and co-creator of The Corner Store,
35:20and he's going to show us
35:21how to cook the perfect steak.
35:23It's lovely to have you here.
35:24Thank you, Chef.
35:25I'm so happy to have you.
35:26Appreciate it.
35:27Congratulations on 12 years.
35:28Congratulations on your new restaurant.
35:30Very exciting.
35:31I've heard great things,
35:33and it's very hard
35:34to start a restaurant anywhere,
35:36and especially in New York City,
35:37and you're off to a hot start.
35:39Congratulations.
35:39We're trying hard at the 86,
35:40our new American steakhouse
35:41in New York.
35:42And thank you,
35:43and I'm glad we're starting
35:44with the Negroni.
35:45Absolutely.
35:47Oh.
35:48We're going to talk some beef.
35:49Okay, great.
35:50You enjoy your cocktail.
35:50Let's talk beef.
35:51Okay, great.
35:52We showcase a bunch
35:53of different cuts of steak
35:54in the 86,
35:55all ethically sourced,
35:56all over the world.
35:57I've been doing this a long time.
35:58I have some great relationship
35:59with some great ranches.
36:00Everything from dry-aged cote to boos,
36:02beautiful big hunks of meat
36:03with that beautiful bark on there.
36:04That's great.
36:06Our porterhouse,
36:07best of both worlds,
36:08Vaca Vieja,
36:09a special program just for us
36:10where old dairy cows
36:11turned wagyu
36:12served on your plate here.
36:13Today, since we're at 30 Rock,
36:15we're going to talk about
36:15the great New York strip.
36:17Beautiful.
36:17Beautiful cut of meat.
36:18I have a beautiful cut of meat.
36:19You're going to season it up
36:20liberally for us.
36:21Okay.
36:22Cooking a great steak
36:22is really about the sum
36:23is greater than the parts.
36:24You're going to start
36:25with kosher salt.
36:26Season up high,
36:26go for it.
36:27Okay.
36:27Nice and high,
36:28it's going to spread out
36:28like a shotgun.
36:29The height is important?
36:31All over, right?
36:31Because if you went close,
36:32you'd just do that.
36:33Yeah, yeah.
36:35Look at this.
36:35Do the same thing
36:36with the pepper now.
36:37Okay.
36:37This is Madagascar black pepper.
36:39We crack it by hand.
36:40We add a little bit of water
36:41so it doesn't burn.
36:42A little pro tip for you.
36:44Up high.
36:44Crack it in there.
36:45Now we're going to,
36:46to get this beautiful crust,
36:47we're going to slap it in there.
36:48Okay, great.
36:49Oh, are you going to do
36:49the other side?
36:50Got to get both sides.
36:51I mean, I think like sometimes
36:52people are intimidated
36:53by cooking a steak
36:54and you're really making
36:55it seem super easy.
36:56I promise you it is.
36:57The first thing you've
36:57got to really remember
36:58is turn off all your smoke detectors.
36:59If you're in New York
37:00or anywhere in an apartment,
37:01turn off all your smoke alarms.
37:02I promise we are going to
37:03start a little bit of a fire.
37:04Okay.
37:05Beautiful cast iron pan.
37:06Get it ripping hot.
37:07All right.
37:07When I say ripping,
37:08you're going to see the smoke
37:08come out there.
37:09You ready?
37:10We're going to go in there
37:10and we're going to produce
37:11this beautiful crust.
37:13Okay.
37:13We have our steak.
37:14It's nice and seasoned
37:14and we're going to get it in there.
37:16Ready?
37:16Yeah.
37:17Oh, it did sizzle.
37:18It did.
37:18Very good sizzling.
37:19Yes.
37:20For steak this size,
37:21you're going to ask me
37:21how long to cook it, right?
37:22No.
37:23All right.
37:23Well, I'm going to tell you
37:24I was going to ask you.
37:25I was going to ask you.
37:25How long do you cook it?
37:26We're going to do about
37:27four minutes on each side.
37:28Okay, great.
37:29Right?
37:29We're going to let it get
37:29a good crust, let it sit there,
37:30let it get nice and charred
37:32and crust.
37:32Gotcha.
37:33Do you overthink it
37:34or do you just say
37:34it's going to be four minutes?
37:35Do you ever have to, like,
37:36keep an eye on it?
37:37No.
37:38Internally, that temperature
37:39and that clock is just
37:39always kind of running.
37:40Okay, great.
37:41So you kind of know
37:41what you're doing.
37:43You know, the one thing
37:43that everybody does at home
37:44is they tend to move
37:45their meat around
37:46when they're on the grill
37:46and this and that.
37:47Just leave it alone.
37:47Just leave it alone.
37:48Don't mess with it.
37:49Let it do its job.
37:50Let the steak cook itself.
37:51Just let the steak
37:52do itself, exactly.
37:54All right.
37:54So we're going to pretend
37:55we have been cooking this
37:55for an extra long time?
37:56We're going to pretend?
37:57Yeah.
37:57And then we're going to look
37:58at a finished one?
37:58Oh, from the magic of television.
37:59Oh, my goodness.
38:01Oh, my goodness.
38:05Goodness gracious.
38:06You can see that beautiful char.
38:07Now, I'm sorry to interrupt,
38:08but I've just noticed
38:08for the first time
38:09that during the entirety of this,
38:11there's been a duck's head
38:12on the table.
38:15Well, one of our
38:15signature dishes at the 86
38:17is our dry-aged duck.
38:18I get these amazing ducks
38:19from Joe Jurgowicz.
38:20I like to use the entire animal.
38:21So there you have
38:22a tête de cochon.
38:23Okay.
38:23Or tête de...
38:24Do you eat the tête de cochon?
38:26Yes.
38:26So this is the head and the neck.
38:28It is stuffed with a foie gras
38:29and duck sausage.
38:30Okay.
38:31We then take it,
38:32we slice it,
38:32and we carve it
38:32with this beautiful dry-aged duck.
38:34Oh, my God.
38:34I'm sure...
38:35You want to see
38:35what it looks like inside?
38:36Yeah, sure.
38:36Yeah, why not?
38:37We're doing TV.
38:38Oh, my God.
38:39Here you go.
38:40You ready?
38:40So there's this beautiful sausage
38:42right on the inside.
38:43Sorry, what part of the duck is that?
38:45So this is the neck and the head.
38:47Wow.
38:47Literally, you can see it, right?
38:49I mean, I knew that was...
38:52The neck and the head.
38:53The neck and the head.
38:54We showcase the entire animal.
38:56That's fantastic.
38:57And it's so good for the duck.
38:59Yeah, well, you know,
39:00you don't want it to go to waste.
39:01It means so much to...
39:02Yeah.
39:03We're going to let our steak rest.
39:04Okay, great.
39:04How long do you let it rest?
39:05Half the time it took you to cook.
39:07Okay.
39:07We're cooking eight minutes,
39:07we're letting it rest for four.
39:08Okay, great.
39:09Right?
39:09When your mom was cooked,
39:10you cut it off,
39:11it bled all over the table,
39:12it was a terrible steak.
39:13We don't have that problem.
39:14How dare you say that about my mother?
39:15Well, my mother, maybe.
39:16Okay.
39:17My mother liked to make things crispy.
39:18I love you, Mom.
39:20We're going to slice it up beautifully,
39:22and that is your perfect medium-rare steak.
39:24That is gorgeous.
39:27And then how do you eat it with ketchup?
39:29Oh, sometimes, you know.
39:31If my son is around,
39:32definitely there's ketchup.
39:33Anything you can to get to eat.
39:34Can I have a piece of the steak?
39:36Absolutely.
39:36I want you to sauté it up, though, first.
39:37All right, so how much more?
39:38A little bit of butter.
39:40Finish it off.
39:41Oh, my God, butter.
39:41Yeah, butter makes everything.
39:42But it's good butter.
39:44It's like for the healthy heart.
39:45Yeah, of course.
39:46All right, and then wear the salt or no?
39:47Yeah, salt it up.
39:48There we go.
39:49Look at this.
39:49I want a salt.
39:50Are you a salt guy?
39:51I love it.
39:51Oh, I love salt.
39:52Cheers.
39:52All right, here we go.
39:53Cheers.
39:53Look at this.
39:55Mmm.
39:56That's a good taste.
40:03Congratulations on the restaurant.
40:04The 86, everybody.
40:05Check it out.
40:0612 years.
40:07Congratulations.
40:08That's huge, brother.
40:09Michael McNuller, everybody.
40:10Be right back.
